I think the weird camera angle can be explained by a Mario 64 style third person camera. We know EB64 took inspiration from Mario 64, and in that game, pressing up on the c-pad would bring the camera close to Mario and allow the player to fully control the position while Mario's head continues to move so it permanently looks away from the camera. It could be that EB64 had a system that was very similar, with the difference being that the playable charecter and his party would look at the camera instead of looking away from it.
I always thought this screenshot was from some cinematic, and it was Lucas and Kuma looking down to a fainted character (like Duster after recovering his memories), or a small character (Salsa) The background being potentially a Magipsy house did blow my mind a ton, suddenly this scene feels much more grounded
You know, this talk of trippy, perhaps animated walls has me thinking of the Majora's Mask observatory. Wonder if maybe they shared code? MM was in production at the end of EB64's dev cycle. Course I have no real ground to stand on, because we only have this one screenshot, but I'm just thinking outloud...
Wow the theory about that area being a building explains why the skybox is so obviously a box. Also the shape of the door and the mockup at 2:03 makes me think the building could be related to the tent in Tazmily (0:33), but that might be a stretch.
When I was younger and I saw this screenshot for the first time, I thought it took place where you had to pick a Chimera to move the water somewhere else. I couldn't tell you why that came to mind but my young self thought this was where the screenshot took place.
I highly doubt it's a Magypsy house because due to weird nature of the textures inside, it's most likely a test room with Lucas, Kumatora, and a small character (likely Salsa or Boney). Yeah those textures aren't psychedelic at all in my opinion.
it can't be a test room, this image is from the game's cancellation blog, and Itoi said they only played through the parts of the game that were done when taking those screenshots. I think with the weird nature of the textures (particularly with the moon in background), it actually hints more as to being a Magypsy house, the Magypsies' have a very Magicant-inspired aesthetic (what with their sea shell houses), and when you compare them, Mother 2's Magicant really isn't too different design-wise to this screenshot, both down to having the moon randomly in the background.
It seems her aesthetic was originally very different, rather than being a tomboy her design leans more on the postpunk aesthetic which rose to popularity in the 1980s. It's a bit of a stretch, but maybe her design was somewhat of a nod to the heavy musical connections in MOTHER 3, specifically since the postpunk movement focused heavily on self-expression and non-conformity?
Any cutscenes in the 2000 build have black bars at the top and bottom of the screen, and since this screenshot doesn’t have that, I heavily doubt it’s a cutscene.
Similar to another commenter here, I believe that it’s Lucas and Kumatora in club Titaboo

I don't know, sometime the moon is visible late during the day while it's still bright So I think that maybe Lucas and Kuratora are on top of something and looking down during a cutscene and that angle is used while they're talking to each other Can't imagine it being inside a room because of the perspective, the camera is under Lucas' feet Maybe it would be on top of the mountain in Chapter 7, and that blue stuff is the exit of a cave That doesn't really explain that big pink thing, but maybe it's Lydia's house from outside It's just my theory, the camera angle doesn't convince me that it could be a character's POV, even a character as small as Salsa if they're just standing on a flat ground
the only question that remains is : who is that at 5:13, if you could answer me that, it would be perfect for me. Maybe I could make a theory, that also makes sense lmao
@@DaEgg123 So, my theory is, that you were supposed to go to Snowcap Mountain in Chapter 1, since Flint is alone. Yk the unused sprite from/of Ioina that looks like Kumatora, but clothed for Winter?(Maybe it was supposed for Lydia) That's also where you meet her. She runs off a bit later to Osohe. Now, since there is a fridge on top of the mountain, you would use that to get to Osohe, trying to find Kumatora, but you can't, so you get the Drago Fang, fight against the Drago, yk the stuff. That's my explanation at least. Maybe a bit loosly explained, but I hope it helps, since Flint was supposed to be a more major character in the story, he could've also be on Snowcap Mountain.
Interesting theory. Personally, based on the lighting and how Kumatora is dressed, I always assumed the picture was from Club Titiboo.
Yeah but the camera angle wouldn't make sence, unless maybe it's from Boney's perspective.
Keep in mind, we have an image of what Kumatora’s waitress design looked like in EB64, and it’s different to this design.
@DaEgg123 I think the waitress design was her pre-timeskip design while her model in this image is her timeskip design.
i think that screenshot is actually so cool, it would look so cool on a hoodie

My theory of why they'd be looking at the camera if this was a debug camera is that they were in a cutscene where they were already looking down.

Good thing they dressed her up more in Mother 3 GBA

Oh boy last screenshot...
One of these days we going to come across the earthbound 64 rom file from e3. We will have a group of dedicated fans to finish it.

What even is that last screenshot lmao
A snow area from early 1997. It’s pretty shrouded in mystery as to what area it is, but it probably is just a very early snowcap mountain.
and what's that in the background, behind the second tree? Am I going crazy or is that some kind of building
can i question the clothes of kumatora?. she look very different

It's most likely an earlier design for Flint.
