Thank you for the Všw videos. They helped me a lot when assembling all three kits. As I found out, I also have almost all the problems you describe here. I found out that I have to glue some parts. The biggest problem, however, is the weak electrocution. You solved it. I'm just very surprised that the kit manufacturer hasn't solved this a long time ago. This problem with the weak motor is experienced by most, rather everyone who connects Night City and Spaceport. The manufacturer could have responded a long time ago and everyone would have welcomed it.

Another excellent video. Question - how easy is it to remove the original motor assembly once installed. Robotime are sending me a more powerful one. A quick looks suggests remove the screw and gear wheel and it should hen pull out maybe? Hopefully does not involve dismantling all the link assembly at that end.
Hey Simona, thank you very much, I’m glad you found it helpful 😊 Ah that’s great to hear that ROKR is sending a more powerful motor and tbh I can’t really remember if it was that straightforward or not since it was a while back when I did the kit, but I don’t think it involves that much effort.
Thank you so much for that, it’s really appreciated and I’m really glad you enjoyed it and found it helpful 😊 Fingers crossed your one works well once completed and don’t forget to share it ⚙️
The problem with the 2nd motor is that it has no gearbox, so high RPM and no torque. I went through the same process for rotating a large solar panel full of water towards the sun, eventually found a 12v 1RPM geared motor from China. All of the other four you have feature a gearbox in the extension on the front of them - behind that, they're probably the same as number 2. It's a hard task finding the particular voltage, RPM and torque for your specific needs, particularly if you involve brushless motors. The biggest problem is that you never know how they're going to perform until they arrive. I'm a huge fan of marble runs. Just ordered the ROKR Spaceport/Night City/Link Kit from Amazon and after watching this, ordered the 400RPM motor and speed controller as well. Also while building will make sure that I wax that cog. Great vid, as an engineer all the info is absorbed and appreciated. Looking forward to building this.
@@BobWarren_ Hey Bob, you are totally right about the motors there, but yeah I think I found a decent one. And another obstacle that I had to tackle was the actual space for a replacement motor which was as difficult as finding a decent motor with high RPM and torque. I wish ROKR did that for us before releasing the link pack 😅 And you are more than welcome and you are going to love those kits, but possibly get a bit annoyed at Night City as it has a few annoying tight spaces that feel like they did that on purpose to make it more difficult 🤷♂️ But nevertheless they’re brilliant kits and enjoy 😊
@@MartinsAssemblyHaven Just finished the Night City, and yes, compared to the Spaceport there are some bits that aren't in the correct order - eg the spiral, which is better installed after putting in the primary holding structure, or removing the splitter tipper to install the last two pieces. The bits under the big cogs when attaching to the board were particularly frustrating. I assume the Spaceport is newer and they've learnt from their mistakes, because that was a dream to put together... more pages, more logical "ground-up" building. Next project is the link kit and upgrading to the 400RPM motor. Thanks for doing the research on that, it really is appreciated. Not sure yet whether I'm going with a 9/12v transformer or the 9v battery. Also, slight kink with both sets is occasional ball jams at the very bottom, going into the lifter wheels. Did you experience this, and if so, how did you fix it?
Hey Bob, my apologies for such a slow reply. And yeah you’re correct and they’ve definitely learned from their mistakes of which is great. And I’m glad you’ve completed both and I hope you enjoy the link kit and it’s up to you really what voltage your going for, but if you’re planning on using the 9V battery, you might as well go for the 9V motor. And you’re more than welcome, it was my pleasure doing it 😊 And yes the balls sometimes do jam at the bottom the marble runs and I haven’t done anything yet to change it tbh, I might look into it in the future 😊

Martin, very useful video. It's helped me greatly. Thank you. Did you finally continue to use the 9V battery or hook it up to the mains (via USB I'd assume) ? In other words is the final running that we see in the video using battery or USB ?
I watched your video with the standard motor and you said it was way to slow but it did work. Wouldn't the weight of the steel balls still fall into place as they move around and work like it's supposed to even though the gears run a little slower. Honestly I don't see how the gears spinning faster would make it run any smoother. I'm still waiting for the addon kit to arrive and I will definitely be watching your video's during the build. I'm not sure I'm smart enough to modify the kit like you are doing so I may be stuck with original pieces when I get started. One thing for sure, you just got a new sub, I appreciate the time you take explaining what you are doing and hoe to do it.
Hey, thank you for watching it and thank you very much for the Sub, it’s much appreciated 😊 So the existing motor does work, but it is far too slow and it takes ages for the steel balls to travel up and then go down, and to make the gears and the whole run smoother I had to align bits and also superglue some pieces in place to stop them from moving or displacing themselves and I also waxed everything really well and honestly it runs amazing now and is very smooth 😃 And I hope you enjoy the build once you get the kit and you do t necessary have to modify it if you’re happy with the speed and power it produces 😊
Hey again, if you’re using a 12V motor, you could use a 9V battery, but that’s a bit low tbh and can damage the motor as the current drawn won’t be enough, but if you can find a similar 9V motor, then that would be perfect, especially if you don’t want to mess with the mains basically.
Your video is amazing, me and the kids enjoyed it and wanted to know if you had a video which shows how to add a motor to the ROKR Marble Night City LGA01 as thats the one we have and would like to modify it like you have done, also to add some lights to.
Hey, aww thank you so much, I’m delighted you all guys enjoyed it 😊 And unfortunately there wasn’t a motor for the Night City and I never customised it for a motor because the link pack came out and it’s now connected to the spaceport so I won’t be able to customise it, sorry. But you could try yourself if you wanted to 😊
@MartinsAssemblyHaven thank you for getting back to us. I may try and see if I can use the motor and options you have linked to and see what happens. Also need to make a belt and cog.
Hi Martin and throughly enjoy your videos. I have just completed both parts and the link pack. I have upgraded my gear thexsame as you done in your video. Do the wires from the on off switch go to the original USB port at the back of the model so when connected the power for the gear motor and lights all work from one port?

My motor worked on just the spaceport for a few minutes. Now it just clicks and won’t turn like it doesn’t have enough torque to run the gears. The hand crank is smooth as can be. I guess it stripped out on the inside of the motor.
Hey, yeah the motor isn’t strong enough for 2 marble runs. What I’ve heard is that people get in touch with ROKR/Robotime and they ask for a new motor for the link pack, and apparently they send out a new stronger one. I haven’t done it myself but you could try 😊
Hey, that’s brilliant and I’m really glad you like them 😊 I got it on Amazon, I’ve got the USA Amazon link here: amzn.to/3Y2u1nk And the UK one here: amzn.to/45Vd1RX But remember if you do get this motor, you will have to do the modifications to the kit 😊
Hi Martin, I've just put the large belt on and the tightness just pulls the gear really off centre. I checked on your construction of night city and you had the same issue. Is it me or was this section a really bad design. Going to do what you have done and move the gear further in, maybe they should've gone with the metal rings like in the link set.
Hey Steven, yeah I think the design wasn’t the best when both marble runs are connected. As a single model is great, but the 2 together not so much. And I don’t think metal rings would make much difference as the whole side that the belt sits on should be redesigned.
@@MartinsAssemblyHavenHI have ordered 2 miniature bearings that fit the internal dimensions of the frame and the thickness of the rod. Going to replace both sides, this should also stop the issue of the belt pulling off centre. I'll let you know if it works
Great work. I tried your links to order the parts through those links. But the motor shows as unavailable for US addresses. Perhaps because you link to Amazon Uk. Any chance you can provide links that will help you and be available in the US? Thanks and best regards!
@@MartinsAssemblyHaven: Good morning, Martin, from New York City. It works great. Could you find an equivalent link for the speed controller. I have 9 volt batteries, battery clips and, I think, a mains plug-in that can provide 12V DC. Best reards and thanks again!

Hey Shane, thank you very much 😊 So from what I’ve seen, it looks like it’s literally the last step or shall I say extra step right at the end of the instructions. Have you opened up the box already and looked at the instructions?
@@MartinsAssemblyHaven not yet no. I am waiting on the linking part and looking at your modification to see if I can incorporate it into the build rather that add after 🤷
If you have a look that would be great as I’d also like to know if you have e that extra small piece right at the end 😊 And that’s not a bad idea, but I can’t advise unfortunately on how to do it without attaching everything first, but I hope it all goes well once you’re doing it 🤞
@@MartinsAssemblyHaven so do I 🤣. I shall open them and look, how can I send you an image? Also what are the dimensions of your piece of wood, height and width please?
Hey Ken, I didn’t show that bit on purpose in case someone followed it but something wasn’t connected properly etc and they got a shock since it’s the mains plug. I don’t want to take chances on suggesting on how to do that but you see. I hope understand 😊 You can however quickly do some research on trusted electrician websites or just give me hem a quick call 😊
Dear Martins, I have a question, and please excuse my English, but I understand that if you change the engine, the USB sockets will only work for the lights? And the ignition button doesn't work? Is that right? Thanks.
Hey Ramon, don’t you worry your English is perfect 😊 And yes you are correct. The button still works but it can only turn on and off the LED lights. And motor is powered separately 😊
Another quick question Martin, can you get away with just the upgrade motor or do you have to have the speed controller as well? Sorry for all the questions but I thank you for all answers.
No no don’t you be sorry, just ask whenever you need to 😊 And that really depends on what type of motor you are using. If the motor has high RPM and is like a 9V-12v motor then you might need it because once you attach it to power, it might go really fast/too fast. So you’d need to find that perfect motor speed really that doesn’t need to have its speed controlled.
Hey, I actually didn’t connect the lights to the new circuit, I disconnected the motor and left the lights connected to the existing one and they just work on the usb cable. As for the new motor and the lights, yes you could connect both together and run them on a battery, but it would involve more work so I’d just leave the lights as is because they’re working fine and just customise the motor, but of course it’s up to you 😊
Hallo, mein Freund.
If you’re planning on connecting the existing motor to mains, I would definitely not recommend that. The best you could do is attach a 9V battery to it to make it go faster, but that will eventually burn out the motor as the existing motor is only like 5V and then you’ll have to replace it.
No no, I mean how do you connect the new motor to the mains. Did you take the wires from the old motor and hook it up to the new one so it has that little connector on the end?@@MartinsAssemblyHaven
Oh alright sorry. You got me worried there 😅 Yeah I just cut of the end of the plug and connected it as the old motor wires are just a bit tiny. Just make sure the cable you are using has an output of 12V or less and not much higher and obviously be super cautious as electricity is no joke.
Terrific video thank you. May I ask if the wooden unit was balsa or a harder wood and what size please. Ive just bought the 2 kits and link and look forward to installing the motors you recommend. You have really esrned like and sub. Thanks
Hey Dennis, thank you so much for that, it’s much appreciated and I’m glad I was able to help 😊 I was searching to see what sort of wood it is, but I can’t find it anywhere. But it’s definitely not balsa, it’s kind of in between balsa and hard wood to be honest, but I can’t say 100% what it is. And talking about the size, again I can’t find it anywhere, but I can measure it once I’m back from my holiday in a weeks time if that’s alright? But anyways, I hope that the whole assembly goes well and you manage to customise the space for the motor and it works out great 🤞😊
@ thankyou for quick response. Really appreciated. Probably softwood or pine would do it then and yes I would very much appreciate the size when you return. Have a great holiday. Martin, its helpful folk like yourself that makes the social media like youtube worth having. Great job!
That’s not a problem and yeah you could be right about the wood, but I can’t confirm it. @@Dennis-xs9cn Hey Dennis, it was brilliant thank you, and my apologies for not responding soon already. The dimensions of my motor housing are as follows: Height: 40mm Length: 57mm Width: 30mm The measurements may be off by a mill or so. And the length of the housing is longer than the actual motor just to help hide the cables at the back, it could have been just a tad shorter tbh, but that literally makes no difference. And the circumference is just wider than motor by a couple of mills so it fits nice and tight. And I did glue it in once everything was in the place correctly just to reduce the vibration of it. And the motor isn’t placed right in the middle of the housing, it’s kind of very close to the top of the housing. But you could place it in the middle if you wanted to, I can’t see any issue with that. I hope this helps 😊

Does this link work? amzn.to/3Y2u1nk
@@MartinsAssemblyHaven: Good morning, Martin, from New York City. It works great. Could you find an equivalent link for the speed controller. I have 9 volt batteries, battery clips and, I think, a mains plug-in that can provide 12V DC. Best reards and thanks again!
Good morning Alan 😊
Oohh wow all the way from New York, that’s awesome 🤩 I’d love to go there for Christmas one day 🎄
Anyways, I’m glad that link worked and here the speed controller: amzn.to/3zzcnxH 😊
Great help but a little more if i may be so bold… i am yet to build my spaceport but was interested in you mention of a modification to stop two balls from entering… how will i know if i have the modified version? What does the part look like?
Hey Shane, thank you very much 😊
So from what I’ve seen, it looks like it’s literally the last step or shall I say extra step right at the end of the instructions.
Have you opened up the box already and looked at the instructions?
@@MartinsAssemblyHaven not yet no. I am waiting on the linking part and looking at your modification to see if I can incorporate it into the build rather that add after 🤷
If you have a look that would be great as I’d also like to know if you have e that extra small piece right at the end 😊
And that’s not a bad idea, but I can’t advise unfortunately on how to do it without attaching everything first, but I hope it all goes well once you’re doing it 🤞
@@MartinsAssemblyHaven so do I 🤣.
I shall open them and look, how can I send you an image?
Also what are the dimensions of your piece of wood, height and width please?
Cannot see anything in the instructions that looks like a mod, final pictures are of the motor instal.
@martinsassemblyhaven can you show how you connected the new motor and speed controller to the wall plug in ?
Hey Ken, I didn’t show that bit on purpose in case someone followed it but something wasn’t connected properly etc and they got a shock since it’s the mains plug.
I don’t want to take chances on suggesting on how to do that but you see. I hope understand 😊
You can however quickly do some research on trusted electrician websites or just give me hem a quick call 😊
Excuse me for my English
Did you make or buy the protection for the engine?
Hey. I actually made it myself 😊
Dear Martins,
I have a question, and please excuse my English, but I understand that if you change the engine, the USB sockets will only work for the lights? And the ignition button doesn't work? Is that right? Thanks.
Hey Ramon, don’t you worry your English is perfect 😊
And yes you are correct.
The button still works but it can only turn on and off the LED lights. And motor is powered separately 😊
Another quick question Martin, can you get away with just the upgrade motor or do you have to have the speed controller as well? Sorry for all the questions but I thank you for all answers.
No no don’t you be sorry, just ask whenever you need to 😊
And that really depends on what type of motor you are using. If the motor has high RPM and is like a 9V-12v motor then you might need it because once you attach it to power, it might go really fast/too fast. So you’d need to find that perfect motor speed really that doesn’t need to have its speed controlled.
Great work Martin! Can I send you my marble run and you can modify it for me? Lol
Thank you so much, it’s much appreciated 😊
Haha yeah sure, send it over 😂🤣
@@MartinsAssemblyHavenIt is in the post 😆
I’ll be waiting for it 😂
@@MartinsAssemblyHaven lol
excuse me, where dou you got the external gear for 12v motor
Hey Ryan, I’ve got the link for everything I used in the video description 😊
@@MartinsAssemblyHaven thanks for reply. but there is no link about external gear
@RyanRandom Oh sorry my mistake I never picked up on that.
I just used the same gear that was already on the kit, I just modified the centre of it 😊
@ okayy thanksss Mr Martin🙏
@RyanRandom No problem at all, and if you’re customising it too, I hope it goes well and everything works out 🤞
How did u wire the lights up to the new set up
Sorry forgot to add need it to run off battery only motor and light can it be done
👌
When connecting it to be mains powered, does it connect to the part that the old motor connects to, or is it running into its own separate plug?
Hey,
I’m not sure if I’m misunderstanding your question, but the mains cables connect directly at the back of the new motor 🙂
Ah ok so just cut the cables off the old motor?@@MartinsAssemblyHaven
If you’re planning on connecting the existing motor to mains, I would definitely not recommend that.
The best you could do is attach a 9V battery to it to make it go faster, but that will eventually burn out the motor as the existing motor is only like 5V and then you’ll have to replace it.
No no, I mean how do you connect the new motor to the mains. Did you take the wires from the old motor and hook it up to the new one so it has that little connector on the end?@@MartinsAssemblyHaven
Oh alright sorry. You got me worried there 😅
Yeah I just cut of the end of the plug and connected it as the old motor wires are just a bit tiny.
Just make sure the cable you are using has an output of 12V or less and not much higher and obviously be super cautious as electricity is no joke.
Great idea! One question, if you don't mind, what motor did you use? 400 RPM? 100 RPM?
thanks
Thank you very much 😊
It’s a 400 RPM motor, and just make sure it’s high torque as well 😊
hi do you get a motor with the link kit
Hey Gary, no you don’t, you have e to use the motor that comes with the Spaceport Marble Run 😊
Terrific video thank you. May I ask if the wooden unit was balsa or a harder wood and what size please. Ive just bought the 2 kits and link and look forward to installing the motors you recommend. You have really esrned like and sub. Thanks
Hey Dennis, thank you so much for that, it’s much appreciated and I’m glad I was able to help 😊
I was searching to see what sort of wood it is, but I can’t find it anywhere.
And that’s not a problem, I’ll measure it up once I’m back and thank you very much, it’s nice to get some summery heat finally 😅
And thank you very much for that, it’s much appreciated feedback as I love explaining folk how things work and how to improve them if I can etc 😊
@MartinsAssemblyHavenhi martin. Hope you enjoyed holiday. Can you provide the dimensions of the wood for motor for me please
@@Dennis-xs9cn Hey Dennis, it was brilliant thank you, and my apologies for not responding soon already.
The dimensions of my motor housing are as follows:
Height: 40mm
Length: 57mm
Width: 30mm
The measurements may be off by a mill or so.
Excuse me for my English.
Avez
Don’t worry Avez you’re good 😊
