  • Today we’re taking on the topic of free radicals - a term that’s commonly used in marketing where we hear we need to invest in products that fight them. But what even are free radicals, are they always bad for us, and what does that mean when it comes to choosing skincare and using red light?
    Red light therapy triggers a burst of free radicals and there is a balance to be found in getting the most beneficial amount without going too far.
    Here to guide us through all this is Bev May Sanderson, science graduate and founder of Maysama skincare who has made it a personal quest to understand red light and how to harness the power of antioxidants and free radicals.

    So, no more meditation for 20 minutes in front of panel. Now: 10 minutes dancing facing front, 10 minutes dancing facing back. Works great! Issue is to work mediation in again, but I’ll figure it out 😉

    Hi Claire, better late than never. Interesting on my body I began to use red light for 30 to 60 mins and got better results. One was for skin elasticity, and I had some strange bobbles appearing around my top inner legs from knee to top of the thighs. All have disappeared. It was also for overall body condition, digestion, bones and blood flow as well. I have had really good results when using it longer. As I'm nearing 60 things have accumulated and I feel it's clearing it all out and healing. So maybe the time thing is an age thing as well. It healed fibromyalgia for sure. I don't get it anymore. For my face I use for 20 mins and made my own topical mixture of green tea, organic rose water and glycerine. I don't think my red light is the strongest brand but the excellent results I have had speak for themselves.

    I have a full body panel from Platinum LED that I use 2X daily 7 days a week for 40 minutes each session (20 minutes on the front then flip to the back for another 20). I've been doing this for 15 months straight, rarely missing a day. My skin looks absolutely amazing and has improved greatly since I began using the device. I'm 56 and my skin seems to be aging in reverse, if that's possible. When I'm at the gym, I am able to see how different my skin looks in the mirror compared to others around me of all different ages. My skin looks incredibly healthy and has an amazing glow from within compared to everyone else, even much younger men and women. My skin is getting tighter, firmer and plumper too! In addition this device does all the other wonderful things like help with muscle soreness and recovery after strenuous workouts. I did a LOT of research on red light therapy before I purchased my device and could not find a single negative side effect. I'll keep doing what I'm doing because I absolutely love the results. It just so happens that I drink Matcha tea and take NMN with resveratrol just prior to my morning session and glutathione after my bedtime session.

      @@heidikamrath1951 at the time PlatinumLED offered the best red lights available on the market. They also offer 0% financing that I found very attractive and took advantage of. The warranty is great as well. Should you choose to purchase from this brand I think you’ll be very happy. Delivery was quick with no issues. I set the stand up and mounted the lights by myself although two people is ideal. I’d purchase again without hesitation.

      Very inspiring! I’ve recently invested in an infrared sauna and a full body light panel is next on my list. Gym mirrors can be really unflattering, so if you see an improvement you know you’re not imagining it!

      I have seen some research on Pubmed that indicates the infared can cause photo aging. I’d love for this channel to get into the specifics and combinations of most effective and safest wave lengths

    Your guest has a lot of knowledge, which I found great. Like her, I use my red light therapy every day in the mornings. For me, it is a meditative routine. Dwayne Johnson, also known as the Rock, wakes up at five in the morning and does a two- or three-hour work-out routine except I do one hour work routine followed by red light therapy. However, where I do disagree is with the recommended length of time to use. Most professional salons recommend 30 -90 minutes in a professional setting e.g salon, doctors office, etc (wouldn't you be angry if you paid a large amount of money only to be in it for six minutes), while for the home version, they recommend 20 -30 or do claim you can do longer up to 40 minutes if you want. I personally do it for 40 minutes every day. In my opinion, six minutes hardly seems worth it.

      Frustratingly there is a lack of research from the industry on the optimum amount of red light exposure longer-term. We know too much can be a bad thing (I've linked in the description to a separate discussion on this channel on that subject) but we also know just a few minutes a day has been found to have beneficial effects. I go with less is more but really we need long-term studies to be sure.

    Thank you Claire. I love Bev and her knowledge, as well as her truly genuine demeanor. One feels the way she really wants to educate and help people.
    The Time Master Pro as well as Bev’s own GuaSha tool have pulsed light. I did however hear that people with epilepsy or prone to seizures have to be very careful with the pulsed light.

    Fabulous Clare. I have the Maysama handhold which I 've brought away with me while I've been on holiday in Europe.
    Gosh, I've found it so hard to keep up with my routine that all I've been doing is my skin care and religiously useing the Anma. There are just so many distractions when travelling but I hope to get into red light when I get back home.

    I use a panel & use it on both my face & stomach. But instead of doing them separately, I now do them together! I just move the panel up & down every 3-5 seconds. TIME SAVINGS! Thanks!

    Very interesting Clare. I'm using the Current Body red light, 4 times a week for 10 minutes, I especially see immediate results when I have a small wound and in general now after 1 year of use my skin seems more luminous. I also use the Nu face and would like more information about it, like now in this interview. This was very helpful. So thank you Clare and Bev May.

    I have the Celluma Home and manufacture recommended time is 30 minutes. It shuts off at 30. I use mine at night and it puts me right to sleep.

    Brilliant! I use a red light mask 2-3 times a week and also have a solarwave microcurrent device that has red light in it. I think I"m getting a nice balanced dose, but just made myself a cup of rooibos tea after watching this. I do normally put on topical antioxidant serums each day though, including after using red light devices.

      @@tallisinwonderland4724 I've liked it but can't 100% tell if it's what's making my face look so much better this past week. I also got more regular taking my collagen supplements the last couple weeks (where I'd been really spotty with it) and also added OneSkin serum to my routine over the last couple weeks. So it could be those other things. That said, I do see a firmer face in the last week than since I first started using a red light mask a year ago. If it is the device, it could be the red light component being used now twice daily instead of just a couple times a week I use the mask. I know my skin responds quite well to red light. Sorry I can't be more helpful, but I'm not testing for other people so not isolating what new things I do to isolate effectiveness.

    I use the Therabody Face Pro infrared section around my eyes for just 3 minutes total a day and lines and upper eye lids are lifted so believe red light works well. Thanks for the interesting video and your hair looks fabulous by the way❤

    It's funny, maybe I was doing it intuitively but anytime I use my red light bulb, I turn my face from side to side and up and down throughout the treatment. Glad Bev mentioned the 6-minute treatment because I was doing about 15 at a time but maybe it wasn't terrible considering I'm always moving my face around. I recently reduced my treatment time to about 10 minutes again with constant movement and I'm wondering if that's still too much even if I'm moving my face? Edit to add: I've been using the Maysama serum and also the brightening mask, the cleanser and the exfoliating toner for quite some time and they are among my favorite products of all time and must have's. That being said, since Green Rooibos offers protection against free radicals, would 8 to 10 minutes be okay or is 6 minutes absolutely the max that we should go before causing reverse effects?

    Excellent interview! I use a red light panel and pre treat with Maysama green rooibus serum with impressive improvements in my skin. When Bev is speaking of red light is she referring to only Infrared or in combination with Near Infrared? I stopped using Near Infrared due to fear of facial fat loss. I am using the Mito panel, 10 minutes a day ~8 inches away.
    I’d appreciate any advice. Thank you!

      So glad you found the interview helpful. Most red light therapy masks and panels use a combination of red and near infrared light which is what I think Bev was referring to.

      So glad you like the channel. Yes, that's right - they might have slightly different specs but you will get the same benefits for your skin using a red light therapy panel.

      every other night and I use the red light mask after my evening skincare routine. Mainly because I find that most convenient but also because I use an antioxidant to help boost the results : )

    This is very interesting particularly the times suggested. I have a celluma panel and the cycle is 30 minutes. I’ve heard from the manufacture the treatment becomes effect after fifteen minutes. Now considering where in the cycle to finish the treatment as 30 mins seems excessive.

      I find I'm now using red light almost daily because I'm only doing it for 6 mins at a time and that is so much easier to fit in than 15mins or even half an hour.

    What about Purple light for wrinkles and sagging? The mask I just purchased combines red and blue and makes purple, or red or blue alone. Other colors too. I gotta research all these color combos and stuff.

    Is it true that Near Infra Red NIR can cause increased pimentation? You would want a panel that you can have ONLY the RED LIGHT and turn off the NIR, correct?

    Clare, this has been amazing for me.
    I use a red light mask a couple of times a week for 30 minutes each time. I always wanted to use it more thinking it would be more beneficial, but it's so time consuming, but now you've just blown me away with the old adage of less is more!💓Wow, I can easily find time for 6 minutes a day, this is brilliant news🙌🥳
    I have heard before about using Green Tea prior to red light but never tried it. Do you think I could make my own toner from actual Green Tea?

      I make my own. I use matcha green tea (loose) and brew a bit stronger than what I would drink. Don’t know if it’s made a significant difference with red light, but can’t hurt, right?

    One question please. I have an LED mask this may sound crazy but I've been putting the mask up against my shoulder as I have frozen shoulder & after 4 months of weekly chiropractor visits which cost a fortune I, in desperation decided to try the mask against my skin. Wow cannot believe the relief it has given me. Then remembered my father had a singular large red globe he used for his Arthritic knee 60 years ago & we thought him crazy. Now thinking maybe he wasn't. My mask is the hard plastic variety & I got it initially to help fight aging etc. Very very cheap but checked all the numbers against the dearer ones & had decided if I used it regularly then I'd step up to the Current Body or Omnilux silicone version. Am now wondering if a panel is the answer as this way can treat face & body in one. Panels here in Australia are really expensive & a pretty small one is around AU$1000 plus so it needs some thought as a large purchase

    Loved this interview! I really learned alot about red light. I still wonder if i can get the benefits of red light if i use it after i do my evening skincare. Which consists of tretinoin, niacinamide , and moisturizer. I will be purchasing some of her line that increases the benefits of red light. Thanks Clare!

      @@geoc1005 Bev has pointed to research showing using a topical antioxidant before red light can boost the results so we know you can have products on your skin before using. I just avoid wearing make-up for best results.

    I was using it for 20 minute sessions. Now, I'm going to stick to 5 or 6 minutes. That should make it easier for me to do every day since it's less of a time commitment. Yay!

    When you speak about the benefits of red light therapy for the skin, does this include the use of infrared light also? Since most panels such as MIto or Platinum Led incorporate this technology

      Yes, that's right. Most of the masks and panels (including the ones Bev uses) incorporate LED and infrared. Red light therapy usually combines the two.

      Hi. Bev recommends using an antioxidant topical such as vitamin c, vitamin E, niacinamide, resveratrol or she makes her own rooibos-based skincare range too which is rich in antioxidants.

    Hello Clare. What do you recommend as a "red light" treatment for hair loss?

      We (as in my family) haven't used red light for hairloss though it's something I would like to explore. Currently my dad and husband use the Calecim Hair System for hair regrowth and I've done a couple of videos on the results.

    Hi Clare! So, is the red light in these mask devices the same red light as let's say, so you know how reptiles require red light lamps? If there is a difference, 1) what is it, and 2) how can you tell which is the right kind of red light and reputible? Thanks!

      Generally speaking you're looking for a mask that combines both LED and infrared. The CurrentBody one that Bev uses which I've linked in the description is a good, cost-effective option.

      HI Sandra. Thank you for your trust. I have stuck with the NMN but dropped the TMG and Berberine when I ran out of capsules. It's not that I don't think they have good evidence behind them, but I don't want to be taking lots of supplements daily until I feel certain of the science so I currently take daily collagen, NMN (which I feel has boosted my energy and my capacity for exercise) and a higher-dose vitamin D3 capsule which includes magnesium and vit K2, and hyaluronic acid. I'll do a summer update on my supplement stack soon.

    If RLT’s effectiveness depends on hormetics (which I’ve been hearing) such that you strengthen your cells by first stressing them with free radicals, (& then they grow stronger like exercising muscles) then how would a green tea product actually help?? It would contradict this action by absorbing free radicals wouldn’t it? It’s all very confusing.

    So, we can back away from the red light for any period beyond a milli second and go for another 6 minutes, for even more benefits? And speaking of pulse light, extended usage would not be an issue?

    I use the LED mask on my face 3-4 days a week for 20 minutes. Are you only using for 6 minutes due to the advice from the manufacturer.? just wondering.

      I think Bev is basing her approach on the fact that we know too much red light is not a good thing, but we don't know exactly how much is too much due to a lack of longer-term research. We also know from studies that just a few minutes of red light therapy a day can be beneficial (i've linked to a study in children with an eye condition in the description) so she's erring on the side of caution (as I am) to get the benefits and not the downsides.

    Hi Claire, the Celluma uses pulsed light, which you could speak to the creator because he says we can never over do LED, and he uses the analogy of a cellphone, and he says are mitocondria can only take as much energy as they need to be “fully charged”… the same as a cellphone we leave it charging all night but it only need maybe two hours. He says the same happens with LED Celluma specifically, the cell charges and then it doesn’t matter if there expose to more because they are unable to absorb any more energy. Maybe this is because Celluma uses pulsed light, I don’t know, because it’s very different of what Bev is saying on this video, that’s why I would love if you can get the Celluma creator on this matter.

      Hi. Thanks for this suggestion. I'll take a look at what he said but there is some evidence to suggest too much exposure may not be beneficial and I would have to be careful of having someone without a medical background declare it's impossible to overdo red light. We'd need concrete scientific evidence to support that.
      My own view is that if we know frequent, shorter treatments can offer benefits then that would be a sensible route to go down.

    Hello!:) TO use "less" is very vague, I wonder maybe you could ask Bev how long is her session with Current Body masK? Is it as the manufacturer recommends or less?:) that would be indeed very helpful, otherwise I just leave anxious and without clarity after these interviews:( Since it all "depends" but if we have a concrete mask then we know the exact waves and she can maybe clarify how many minutes would be optimal?:) thank you!

      Oh what a coincidence! just watched your last video and I got my answer - she uses the mask for 10 min as by recommendation, i guess same goes for Omnilux - use it as recommended by a manufacturer

      I'm finding that it is on my skin, my cheek bone area.I was using it about 4-5x a wk..I have medium complextion..I've switched yellow light bout 2x a wk

      We only really have some anecdotal reports that it may cause hyperpigmentation - I'm not aware of any scientific evidence. Using red light for shorter periods of time as Bev suggests should help ensure you get the benefits and not any unwanted effects but I couldn't say for sure that it wouldn't cause hyperpigmentation.

      It can definitely cause/worsen hyperpigmentation. I was using Maysama serum with my red light device and still suffered a noticeable increase in dark spots on my face to the point where I’ve now had to abandon this modality. The heat from the device can cause inflammation which contributes to hyperpigmentation

    1. I have heard that red light therapy can help to reverse oxidative damage from ultraviolet light... is this true and if yes then how ?
    2. What is the difference between damage from oxidation (free radicals) and glycation (i.e. age spots & liver spots) and how can damage from glycation be reversed

      If you’ve heard people say that using red light therapy for less than 20mins per session is ineffective then I don’t know what scientific evidence they’d be basing that on. In this recent NBC news article for example the experts and brands they spoke to all recommend shorter treatments www.nbcnews.com/select/amp/ncna1303119

    Interesting but since free radicals can bring good and bad why the need of antioxidants with red lights??? My guess is that the ones who created those red light masks are the most knowledgeable on it so did not they make the mask to create the right amount of red light to producethe appropriateamount of free radicals.... The point of using antioxidants is not very clear to me even after listening to the video.

      Hi. Bev was pointing to studies showing red light can enhance the beneficial effects of antioxidants and vice versa - and antioxidants help defend against the negative effects of free radicals.
      The optimal exposure to red light has not yet been scientifically proven which is why it’s better to err on the side of caution and avoid prolonged sessions.
