Here’s an important question: What do the Deadly Six actually do as a team? Chaotix are detectives, the Jackal Squad are mercenaries, the Deadly Six are… what exactly? What were they doing before Eggman showed up? Everything they do in the game is with his technology, whether under his orders at first or to spite him later on. This is partly a result of the Lost Hex just being such a nondescript setting.
I may sound crazy, but I see potential in the bones of this plot. Imagine emphasizing Sonic assuming that the Zeti are another Knuckles situation, locals being coerced by Eggman as he pillages and exploits their land, even resorting to trapping animals in robots again (and it does need to be called a throwback in the story, I agree). And he’s right to see it as that! But, unlike the likes of Knuckles or Chaos or the enslaved wisps, the Deadly Six aren’t peaceful people, but conquerors themselves rightfully feared on the Lost Hex. They aren’t potential friends of Sonic, they aren’t benign or misunderstood guardians, they’re basically evil and ambitious local warlords who take the first opportunity to heighten their power even more. They’re ‘natural’ to the area, and don’t deserve to be enslaved by Eggman, but that doesn’t inherently make them any BETTER than Eggman’s ruthless aggressive technological expansion. They’re a problem that imposes on others’ freedom too, and this in turn could be great for Tails’ role. Sonic is impulsive and keeps thinking of the situation as business as usual, which breaks his decision making a bit and leads to him making mistakes, Eggman doesn’t want the world destroyed but is ultimately just looking to take back over, and the character who best represents technological progress and development without hurting or exploiting the land is key to creating a happy ending for the area. These pieces could all be arranged without changing a single major story beat or gameplay section, even! It’s just a matter of actually writing to the characters instead of pie in face BS from the Happy Tree Friends guys. The most that might need to be added to make it work is maybe some Lost Hex local characters who aren’t the D6. Give some new friendly characters basically Amy and Knuckles “role” in the actual product of hanging around, reacting to events, and watching over rescued animals, and suddenly you can do something, bare minimum, functional, that is a new situation for the characters to deal with.
@@tjlnintendo I don’t think you understood what I meant because I was talking about the fact that he says that the game is better for not having a story even though it’s the 20th anniversary game so that means it should have an actual good story and also all the cast are there, but they don’t do anything with them. One of the biggest things I hate about the story is that it's the first time Sonic ever acts before he thinks. If this was just a one off thing that never cam e back that'd be one thing, but for some reason so many descriptions of the character include this now, at least from what I've seen. Funnily enough I wouldn't even say it's a trait that shows up again, it's just the fact that they added that as a part of the character that's potentially on the table when it just doesn't mesh with Sonic. All it ever existed for was to be some kind of catalyst for the forced conflict of the game. I don't hecking know, it's just so clear it was a trait made because it was like, "Oh Sonic's fast, of course he would just do things without thinking." I seriously hope that this never gets revisited in later titles.
His JP bible bio says he's impetuous and not concerned with "details." It's more that Western writers see that Sonic needs to be humbled or learn or have someone like Sally there to police his behavior rather than be the paragon who's always knowing what to do who others learn from.
This game's story is living proof that Sonic Team pushing the other characters to the side in favor of Sonic saving the day ended up hurting them in the long run. AstralWingz, a user on Twitter, came up with an idea that I wholeheartedly agree with to this day. That being Knuckles and Zavok could've been foils to one another. Hell, the Knuckles Clan and the Zeti could've been at war with one another over the Master Emerald many years ago, giving us an explanation as to why Zavok and his crew are the only ones left and why they were stuck on the Lost Hex to begin with. It would also explain why the Knuckles Clan became power hungry warmongers, their fight with the Zeti making them paranoid and striking at clans they view as threats to their safety. Back to the main story, the Deadly Six have more of a reason to drain the Earth's energy outside of "rahh cuz evil" and Knuckles would once again be slapped in the face with his ancestors' sins.
This is actually a pretty good idea, now we just need to find a natural way for Knuckles to get involved with the story, i was thinking maybe he could see the Lost Hex from Angel Island and decide to investigate it similar to how he did in Knuckles Chaotix, he then bumps into Sonic there, they have a bit of banter before being attacked by the Zeti and then they start work together without a second thought or even needing to say it out loud, showing how in sync Sonic & Knuckles are with each other, if we wanna get Amy involved we could just use the same excuse as always that she just chased Sonic into the Lost Hex, somehow, it seems kinda lazy but i think it's pretty funny so i'll just stick to that.
I just finished the video, and i gotta say i don't know how people could possibly defend this story, the writing is just SO lazy, like, even my mom hates it, that's how you know it's bad. It has plot threads, themes and characters, but they are so lazily done that none of that goes anywhere. Like Tails for example, i don't know exactly if that was the intention, but it could be about Tails growing up and starting to feel insecure and like Sonic doesn't trust him, where does that go? Absolutely nowhere, that's where it goes. Frontiers tries to address this and continue that character arc but that's like almost 10 years later and it doesn't fix the prior stories, it just tries to explain in an in character reason why Tails acted that way so they can possibly fix the character, but this story, yeah that was a long while ago, can't fix that. The story also tries to have a theme about life and nature and stuff, but it's just a thing for a few cutscenes and it's not even executed well. Such a poorly done story, glad these guys aren't working on the series anymore, they clearly didn't care while on the job, and they definitely don't care now.
7:02 In the Japanese version of the opening cut scene, Tails refers to the Lost Hex as the Continent of Illusions. It's not much, but it's more than the English version got. It at least explains why we see floating cupcakes in one of the levels.
To its credit it any, there's plenty of grey Breaking Bad-style moments for Eggman like him literally aiming a *gun* at the main duo AND FIRING AT THEM, his chill moments like "That's quite a drop! - Yes, yes it is" with Sonic showing they CAN get along in the right (wrong?) spots, or his "sacrifice" to SAVE SONIC in Lava Mountain. Oh, and the rant against the Deadly Six in Frozen Factory we all know and love (and want more of?) Gathering material for a funny reference music video, I was surprised Eggman had this many star moments in Lost World. Maybe PONTAFF had something up their sleeve but were chained too tightly?
I enjoyed parts of the gameplay, but I was legit gasping at points when you brought up cutscenes my brain completely blocked out. Zardoz deserves a redemption arc.
Actually Sega doesn't force Zeti to be in comic books. It's just that one certain writer is only good at writing them. To be fair, what to expect from Penders' successor?
Ya know…I kinda wanna feel sympathetic towards Lost World’s story, if only because I think its idea of Sonic and Tails not being totally in sync as a team (and the resulting consequences thereof) would make for a genuinely compelling story on its own, with the whole “gotta stop Eggman from killing another planet” subplot helping to add a sense of urgency that - at least theoretically - could lead to even more interesting character moments for Sonic and Tails. But…that would basically make it a bizarre discount hybrid of both Sonic Colors and Sonic Unleashed’s stories; One that I’m thoroughly convinced Sonic Team - along with whoever they bring on for dialogue writing - would be utterly unable to do justice to. (As a side note, I find it a neat coincidence that a lot of the problems Pariah pointed out in this video were also pointed out Luke and Roger Van Der Weide so many years ago.)
This is not a coincidence, Luke and Roger Van Der Weide are the real reason why almost everyone thinks Sonic Lost World is absolute trash, their biased opinion influenced their viewer to the point of brainwashing.
Thinking on 29:27 , I think it may actually be the case from their humor they picked up at Happy Tree Friends - a deliberate shocking parody of kids cartoons. "This is horrible. Let's send a wink to the victims of this game that we knew it sucked, okay?" "Right, right."
You know what could've worked story wise? And I'm taking this from what you did with Colors, how about they have done this... Sonic comes to visit the Lost Hex after hearing tales of his bizarre look from everyone around him, only to find out that it's a lost kingdom in the sky being taken over by the Deadly Six, no Eggman what so ever, and idk they could've brought back some characters from the canceled Sonic Xtreme? Because everything including the DS themselves felt like they were carried over from that game, idk just something throw fling at the wall but what do you think? Feel this could be worked on more
When he said cardboard cutouts that talk when you press the button and make them talk that reminds me of the cutouts in poppy playtime chapter 2&3 when you press them they say a line.
a friend had me design zeti for him before, and one thing that I find is the biggest sin of the deadly six's designs is not that they wanna be mario-esk, but that they are just boring and dont do anything more than be generic archetypes like fat man, bowser, girl, lanky punk, small old wiseman, and emo yknow
I only now just realized the sound of Zazz falling at the veeery start is the same stock sound as the Water Wraith in Pikmin 2. You never forget a sound like that lol
Disagree on the Opening Cutscene, I think it looks just as if not better than those of the Previous games. It just wasn’t as flashy action as the other.
I went into this expecting it to be like 99.9% rant and 0.1% actual criticism/praise and I was pleased to know that I was correct. This story does so many things wrong.
Tails' insecurity doesn't come from nowhere, he has an excuse, I don't know if it's decent, but an excuse nonetheless. This bunch of filler scenes involves the joke of Cubot disembodied so that Tails connects him to a robot crab, which drives him crazy and almost harms or "kills" Tails (Yes, kill, because this game loves to play with dark themes in the most bland way possible)So Eggman reproaches him for his action, Tails gets defensive but Sonic stands in favor of Eggman. This makes Tails feel insecure with himself and with Sonic considering him capable. Edit: Oh, no, sorry, the order of the scenes was the other way around. Worse yet, the lab discussion scene has a joke of Eggman being unsure of his genitals. everything is garbage
Whenever someone says "but the comics tho", for me, my response is always something like, "I don't give a shit about the comics, they shouldn't be a crutch for the Sonic series' story telling or quality. Why can't they tell a good story and give all the details of the story WITHIN THE GAME?"
God i hated this era of Sonic. Even as a young lad, i knew Sonic was amiss in Colours... The huge change in VA's didn't help. I'm glad I grew up in the Adventure and X era.

“Let’s Rewrite the Story of Sonic Lost World”, anyone?
Generations is better. Rather have no story than a bad one.
Absolutely. And to top it off, Generations also compensated having no story by being a good game, something that Lost World didn't do.
Except generations is supposed to be a 20th anniversary game and it’s also the only game that has all the main cast so that’s not a good thing.
@@iceman92211how is that not a good thing? Wouldn’t having everyone there make sense for a 20th anniversary?
So not to try is.. like not trying to try? Confusing I know, but Gens had an incredible concept.
@@tjlnintendo I don’t think you understood what I meant because I was talking about the fact that he says that the game is better for not having a story even though it’s the 20th anniversary game so that means it should have an actual good story and also all the cast are there, but they don’t do anything with them. They are nothing but “ hi, I exist “ so that’s why it’s a problem there.
The zetty only caring about their planet and being fine with sucking the life out of Sonic’s planet could have been cool but… nothing was made about that
They could use Sonic’s planet’s energy to complete the Lost Hex
"This game is the worst, bottom of the barrel!"
Next game: Sonic Boom. You probably forgot that one existed, too. Hoo boy.
Boom had nice dialouge and Animations. Sonic actually grew in that Game as a character. Lost world is just ehhh.
@@jasonblack2477Ironically, the worst game has the BEST animations!
He's not doing Boom, I think he said that he might do them all the boom games in one video
While absolutely a blunder, BOOM at least had some interesting ideas for the writing.
@@thirdeye440 If he does, he may overlook some good ideas from Rise of Lyric amidst the sour, SOUR taste of Shattered Crystal.
Fun fact, Jouji Nakata, who voiced zavok in lost world, also voiced e 102 gamma in SA1
Pariah finally sees the light of how shitty Pontac and Graff's writing is
By making it sound worse than it is.
He never doubted they were bad, he just wasn't gonna hop on a bandwagon
The STUPIDEST thing about the story.
The Zeti hate being controlled by Eggman, so Sonic frees them.
Then the Zeti try to kill BOTH Eggman and Sonic and destroy their planet?!
..........WHAT?!?!?!?!?!!?!
What beef do they even have with Sonic other than when Eggman commanded then to stop him when he was in control?!
Are they just evil for evil's sake?
They are the DUMBEST characters to EVER have been put in a Sonic game. And even in the comics theyre just evil for evil's sake.
What the fuck is this story?!?? 🤦🤦
You see, they're bad. That's why lol. What amazing characters.
@@Pariah6950I can see why you kinda said the same thing about mephiles. Though atleast he was more inline with 06's message about facing whatever bad is to come in the future and get things right.
Well the general implication is that Zik raised the other 5 to be evil and give into there dark thoughts leading to
Psychopath Zazz
Glutton Zommon
Believer in Pain as the only absolution Zor
And 110% selfishness and vain Zenna
So the real question is why is Zik evil?
One of the biggest things I hate about the story is that it's the first time Sonic ever acts before he thinks. If this was just a one off thing that never cam e back that'd be one thing, but for some reason so many descriptions of the character include this now, at least from what I've seen. Funnily enough I wouldn't even say it's a trait that shows up again, it's just the fact that they added that as a part of the character that's potentially on the table when it just doesn't mesh with Sonic. All it ever existed for was to be some kind of catalyst for the forced conflict of the game.
I don't hecking know, it's just so clear it was a trait made because it was like, "Oh Sonic's fast, of course he would just do things without thinking."
I seriously hope that this never gets revisited in later titles.
His JP bible bio says he's impetuous and not concerned with "details." It's more that Western writers see that Sonic needs to be humbled or learn or have someone like Sally there to police his behavior rather than be the paragon who's always knowing what to do who others learn from.
23:39 You actually made This stupid scene funny due to your sarcasm of it being good.
The description is hillarious.
The music had me cackling too lmfao
18:24 its the cutscene they based Sonic's entire character in Prime off of!
Man, no wonder it sucked!
All the "Z" names Pariah kept coming up with had me laughing all the way through.
He's a writer, all right?
7:02 In the Japanese version of the opening cut scene, Tails refers to the Lost Hex as the Continent of Illusions. It's not much, but it's more than the English version got. It at least explains why we see floating cupcakes in one of the levels.
Still doesn’t explain the Mario looking themes in the game though… (Jesus Christ this game has ZERO imagination. Fuck….)
Oh, and the rant against the Deadly Six in Frozen Factory we all know and love (and want more of?)
Gathering material for a funny reference music video, I was surprised Eggman had this many star moments in Lost World. Maybe PONTAFF had something up their sleeve but were chained too tightly?
I love all the wrong zeti names 😂

Bro we need dedicated videos on music and aesthetics of Sonic. Need your opinion on that and also maybe your favorite stages for each game
23:48 okay why do i actually like this cutscene a lot
The squares in the level design should have been hexes
Finally he's seen the light. The pooptack brothers are truly an afront to sonic society.

Actually Sega doesn't force Zeti to be in comic books. It's just that one certain writer is only good at writing them. To be fair, what to expect from Penders' successor?
cool video you sound like barnacle boy from spongebob
He’s doing it ladies and Gentlemen!!!
Pariah talking about the 2010's Sonic stories will be his road to insanity.
I love the deadly six all of them bowser crazy man master shifu girl choji and the other guy
Don't you dare compare Choji to that yellow slob
Ngl I genuinely want to know how much power the writers have in Sonic.
great video! sonic is currently one of my main special interests and im getting almost all of my knowledge from your channel!
Feel this could be worked on more
This is the colors rewrite all over again
so glad we're past this era of Sonic storytelling, I can actually enjoy the cutscenes again lol
the sad thing is this is actually one of the better meta era sonic stories
By counting Sonic colours and Sonic generations too, yes.
When he said cardboard cutouts that talk when you press the button and make them talk that reminds me of the cutouts in poppy playtime chapter 2&3 when you press them they say a line.
25:42 "Everyone's gone! Everything's falling apart!"
Missed chance for *There's nothing we can do...*
let’s start working on the deadly six with actual sonic design💪🏾
If this is what sega thought classic sonic was then this is embarrassing and disrespectful from sega
a friend had me design zeti for him before, and one thing that I find is the biggest sin of the deadly six's designs is not that they wanna be mario-esk, but that they are just boring and dont do anything more than be generic archetypes like fat man, bowser, girl, lanky punk, small old wiseman, and emo yknow
I've been highly anticipating for this very moment
This is at the top of my favorite videos that you've made, had me rolling 😂
This is gonna be interesting
I think zimbo carried the story without him lost world would of been worse then Sonic labyrinth
Am I the only one who considered Sonic Lost World a big guilty pleasure?
Xehanort mentioned.
I only now just realized the sound of Zazz falling at the veeery start is the same stock sound as the Water Wraith in Pikmin 2. You never forget a sound like that lol
the xena warrior princess reference was so funny to me bc its one if the 6 shows in my moms rotation of shows she rewatches 😭
25:38 The moments when you pretend to take the game's story seriously are so funny to me xd
Disagree on the Opening Cutscene, I think it looks just as if not better than those of the Previous games. It just wasn’t as flashy action as the other.
I think I heard that Classic Sonic was going to be on Sonic Lost world, but I don't known I haven't really checked.
I went into this expecting it to be like 99.9% rant and 0.1% actual criticism/praise and I was pleased to know that I was correct. This story does so many things wrong.
How did Sonic even lose His World in the first place?
God rest your soul if you attempt a rewrite of this one, don't think you could preserve just about anything from the original 😬
"You get her, Zambambo"
"I'm a girl!"
Black Zetsu was my favorite of the Mario monster
personally I'd say this story perfectly represents what lost world as a game is
Because mostly every character is brought back. Hoping that more of the characters during the 4Kids era reappear.😊
Zulu is the best member of the Deadly Six
Whenever someone says "but the comics tho", for me, my response is always something like, "I don't give a shit about the comics, they shouldn't be a crutch for the Sonic series' story telling or quality. Why can't they tell a good story and give all the details of the story WITHIN THE GAME?"
Yeah, but the comics, tho.
God i hated this era of Sonic. Even as a young lad, i knew Sonic was amiss in Colours... The huge change in VA's didn't help. I'm glad I grew up in the Adventure and X era.
C’mon Pariah, out of the Deadly Six we can at least salvage Master Zikin Miaz
Master sick in my ass
Zazz is so iconic
That's because of Sonic Dash though, not this game.
Iconic for the wrong reason.
I'm sorry you had to sit through a dumb story like this but it was really funny how half assed you summed up everything. I'm excited for how you'll cover Sonic Forces.
