- In this rare clip from the epic-ness that is compound media, we get to see a moment from when Chrissie Mayr guest hosted the legendary Anthony Cumia Show. Nick Rekieta stops by the show and breaks down the full details about the current drama surrounding Eric July & the Rippaverse. After a build up of online back and forth situations escalated due to multiple reasons, it has caused an unfortunate set of dominoes to unfold now leading to Eric having to deal with a lawsuit from a charity named ISOM as well as other social headaches. It's not crowd funding it's a direct preorder. The difference is the product was already produced before the campaign launched. The reason crowd funding gets a bad rep (especially for comics) is because a lot of funded campaigns either take years to come out, or never come out. Rippa doing it all up front is more of a legit business as opposed to some dude in his basement with a pitch.

Which is why I think these ghey ops are bred out of jealousy. Vito has a history of being hostile towards Rippa as far back as the For Canon Sake days. Vito has been trying to crowdfund his book Superkiller. Last I checked, it sits around $70,000. Rippa comes in with two-multi million dollar campaigns. And the books are already made. So there's no crowdfunding, and the customers get their books in a reasonable amount of time. This is also why I think EVS jumped in on the ghey ops as well. Rippa, who is a rookie, is running circles around EVS (who is supposed to be a comic book vet). Ethan can barely get out a book within two years of crowdfunding whereas Rippa is already gearing up for Isom #3 ON TOP OF two other titles (Alphacore #1 and Yaira #1). EVS feels threatened by Rippa because he's essentially proving that there's a much better way to provide customers with what they want in a timely manner (even as an independent publisher). EVS has also stupidly burned bridges with Ya Boi Zack and the FNT crew ... so him destroying his relationship with Rippa isn't unprecedented.
I gotta tell you, i cannot get into crowd funding, like Indygogo and such. I just don't have the patience. That's why I like Rippaverse.

Apples and oranges and let's be clear....Rippa hired comic book vets to write his comic and he has a team of them. EVS is himself writing and drawing his whole book aided only by a colourist and letterer and it's not even the same page length. You spin like a top. There's no op. Only paranoid cowards.

Vito's behavior is very shameful and anyone defending it should be embarrassed. You can like or dislike Vito as a person, but it is undeniable that his behavior is unacceptable.

It's not nitpicking when you can find more bad than good in the thing. You're acting like there aren't dozens of reviews systematically pointing out the objective flaws and errors in the story from the dialogue, to the art and characters, to the story itself.

I wasn't even going to give an opinion on all this but its gone way too far. I do see that Eric could have took the criticism better BUT it wasn't only criticism. Dick and Vito are VERY jealous of FNT and anyone associated to it. Hence why Vito tried to get an episode of FNT with Alex Jones taken down and why Dick is writing people about eric trying to cause trouble.This is why I think that Dick and vito are just Jealous and brought this ill will on Rippa on purpose. Rekieta is never going to criticize Masterson for explicitly trying to ruin Eric July's business because it was Masterson that helped get Nick an audience on UA-cam and escape the life of a small town, not-so-successful attorney. He was never going to drive a Shelby Mustang representing rural Minnesotan meth dealers. Nick goes on about his Christianity and his ethics but in reality he has only one value, looking out for himself.

Eric July did not crowdfund his book. He offered pre-sales on his own web site.
And this isn’t a meaningless distinction. Look to the taxes people file for their businesses to understand how crucial a difference that is.

Direct crowd funding would be top line revenue..."pre order" (as you try to distinguish here) would be a penny for penny deduction from top line revenue. If you did both with say, 100k sales and 70k expenses, the bottom line profit would be 30k for both. The only difference is risk. The pre order model Eric used opened him up to the risk of personal loss where direct crowd funding elimates the risk. That's the only difference financially and is why Nick said it was "to Eric's credit" the way he did it. He took on the risk and trusted his audience to buy the book.

Chrissie's got a big enough heart to have given Jack Murphy a bit of support when he started self-destructing, so this piece with Nick Rekieta isn't surprising. Eric July's image may have taken a few hits with all this beefing, but Rekieta has (figuratively and literally) taken a lot more hits to his with what he's said and done. This "Clippaverse" tactic is another hit to Nick's image despite his intentions.
Nah rippa destroyed his image with the convo with Nick, his subsequent solo stream, the lawyer video, the ministry video, the constant bitching about Nick covering the legal issues of the trademark case and now the evs drama, I was a eric supporter until all of these

I recently changed my position. If Eric July had simply ignored critics, and moved on, this all would have been avoided. I have never EVER reached out to someone to ask them to support me. I bought it and read it and I'll reread it for anything I missed the first time. Most of the "criticisms" about his comicbook are based on things that aren't even actually in the book. You can say the art sucks. Can't argue against it if you don't like it. But the real reason they hate him so much is he's BLACK. A black man's own business, with a black superhero. In hopes to break generational poverty.
Dick Masterson LIED about the book because he didn't want to be wrong. His "criticisms" simply didn't happen in the actual comic.
Malcom X talked about the real face of white liberals. He says that if an institution is racist then black people should make their own institution in its place. Rippa refuses to let anyone own his business but himself. He answers to nobody but his customers, and the white liberals attacked him first, Using blatant racial slurs in some cases. This is exactly what he expected. It's exactly what I expected. I went through something like it after college which is when I decided to look into Malcom X and found Rippas UA-cam. It's a cycle that happens when black people don't choose a master. Leftists hate him, the right wing want to claim him. He wants his comicbook to stay away from politics.
I saw Rippa take criticism live. And he thanked the guy for it. He gets these people saying "your comicbook sucks and you are (insert some vague racist term)" when rippa asks them to explain what they don't like about it, they say it's right wing propaganda or something. They didn't read the comic. This is a bad actor, Rippa gets Rippin.
@39:00 I can beat this argument with the same line of logic used to make it. ISOM the brand or trademark can make bibble bookmarks. The product on the shelf would then be Bible bookmarks by Isom. Rippaverse has Isom by Rippaverse. I can confirm as I am looking at Isom #1 writing this comment that the Rippaverse brand is on the book. Common man, you have to be considering this. You're showing you aren't dumb. It's like a vehicle Make and Model, Not just one. I'm not saying it fixes it. It's not the dame thing at all. many of us (black people) disagree with them to begin with. White and black fans have collectively asked for originally black characters to have their runs. Marvel would rather swap a white characters skin and be done with it, and when faced with the question as to why, in a mask off moment some of them say it isn't worth the effort to make a black character. And we hear that and think. Well it was clearly worth the effort to do it for a white character.
In Rippas case, it's an original black character. His original black character, and he exists because he does. There is no political agenda. He doesnt want his comicbook to be a political statement. And people have come out and said that Rippa cannot hold this viewpoint AND be black. That it is not his place.
Isom doesn't garner sympathy.
The reason for getting out of the hero game is comically clichéd.
He doesn't beat Fontaino's henchman due to a particular technique or acquired knowledge on said henchman's weaknesses or psychological triggers; he just confronts him again and "fights harder" somehow.
The girl he's looking for isn't depicted as being in distress.
The Fontaino arc is sidelined in favor of hell creatures who pop onto the scene all of a sudden.
2/3 of his Ill-Advised Arc have been underwhelming. He's mostly appealing to non-comic book fans as die-hard comic readers will find flaw and have done so with his amateurish writing with no depth.
Read Eric's book. Dick's criticism of the book was extremely kind.

Saying Eric takes himself to seriously and should still be able to take criticism is not what happened here. I was a fan of both Eric and Dick and even before that weirdo showed up to his warehouse I had to mute Dick because all he did was bitch about Eric and I only witnessed Eric respond twice, once reading the “review” of his comic after he got called out for saying it sucked without ever reading it, second on flashcast. This is before Vito and Dick went after the charity. There are tons of Disney parodies that use mouse ears, castle logs, identical fonts, etc but simply change the words to "Dismal" or the like. Disney, a famously litigious corp. has not managed to stop it. I doubt Rippaverse will either. I think Toby, or whatever the clippaverse guy's name is, sucks, but I'd bet money on his winning a court battle on his parody products being transformative. Parody is pretty well protected, and all of Eric's right-leaning fans need to remember that they want parody and other forms of "insulting speech" to be that way, and stay that way.

I was only somewhat aware of the legal issue at hand here and only got my info from one side. I like Eric's chats with AZ, Gary and the FNT crew, so, yeah, I was biased. I watched a video from some guy called Ray Getard who ripped into Eric so harshly that I couldn't finish watching it. I got to the section where Nick's clip was featured and I left, so naturally I had a preconceived notion of Nick before I saw this thumbnail in my watch list. Sorry for the prejudice, Mr. Rekieta. This video made the situation much more clear and I thank you all for breaking this down and allowing noobs like me gain a better perspective of the matter. I'm still a fan of Eric. Not quite. Nick got a chance to participate in this conversation, but if you actually watch him streams you can see he’s been a drunken prick that ran his mouth off multiple times. Keep in mind that there is such a thing as a person being given a chance to study up and find explanations to throw on the subject after the fact.

This was great! I knew nothing of the issues, and its great to have clarity. Nick is awesome. Pretty sure there is more to it - Eric being unable to publish under the big names and such. But that might have been an earlier part of the story.
I really wish all that people talked about was the quality of ISOM as a story. It almost feels like we are trying not to talk about that, because if we did. That would be honest. Im almost convinced now that all this bs drama is just a way Eric can distract from the content of the book
After ISOM 1 was released I was surprised to notice the lack of actual reviews coming from the circle of creators who backed the campaign. For example FNT spoke in general about the book once they received their copies just saying it was great etc, but no-one, that I know of, did an in-depth review. Of course I could be wrong I don't listen to all of Eric's friends channels all the time.

It was them constantly talking this stuff up that made me go. Okay. The way they are and stuff I've even seen on AZ and Gary's recommend made me have high expectations. And finally with this drama. "Well I guess I'll check it out." My first impressions were, eh it's okay, but nothing special. And I still think at it's best, it's average, to MAYBE slightly above. But overall, after thinking about the content more. My thoughts on it soured. And hearing some of the other criticisms of it. I came to the conclusion that they are kinda accurate critiques of the book. Critiques I would have expected from the types like AZ, Gary ect. But they don't speak of it honestly. They don't have to be nasty, just honest like I feel they are other times. They have a clear, admitted bias, for Eric. Which sucks, because it isn't going to help his work improve :(

I've read ISOM 1 and 2. It's good, pretty solid. It's in the 'worldbuilding' phase but there are interesting characters in it with interesting problems. There's probably room for improvement but it's better than anything coming out from DC and Marvel post 2006.

Edit: I’ll add that the “drama” aspect wasn’t really about the legality of anything. It’s about people harassing others, and even going to the guy’s grandfather’s grave. And Nick threw himself into and showed himself to be the typical internet tough guy. I’ll also point out that Xia, one of Chrissie’s cohosts, seems to be a somewhat regular on a Nick’s streams now. So yeah, this feels like they’re just giving Nick a way to paint himself in a better light.
