It was dirted and I had to trim every 3 weeks. Really helped me with my bigger tank where I just scaled up the bottle. It even supported what I think was a bunch of Daphnia. From my experience with this, I’ve eluded that tanks don’t need all this tech like CO2 etc.
I set a thing up in a drinking glass - just big enough to hold a can of coke. Put inch of aquasoil with bit of root tab, and planted some sprigs of Elodea Densa I found in local pond. Just put in the window and changed 1/3 of water each day and it is growing fine. Even has a little snail that snuck in on plant. Its been up for about 6 weeks now and no algae issues

@Greensky02 do it! I repeated the entire process with a 60litre aquarium. I pan-netted out a handful of small fish from the brook: Minnows, sticklebacks, bullheads, stone loaches, gudgeon, tiny perch, etc. I kept the minnows and gudgeon as they adapted incredibly well to an indoor unheated aquarium and readily accepted standard fish flake food: I quickly released the rest back into the stream, as the tank conditions were not optimal for them and/or feeding had to be live food. Minnows are actually delightfully attractive and interesting little fish which school very tightly, and gudgeon have quite an impressive multicolored iridescence to them once settled in.
I'm back in the hobby after a 6 year break 🎉 I discovered your channel about a week ago and I'm so impressed! I love your emphasis on creating beautiful aquascapes and planted tanks. You keep it fun and real. Youre giving me so much inspiration! Thanks MD!

another great plant to use in boggy settups or even like this with the roots and base completly in the water is: Sagittaria sagittifolia. This one also gets white flowers. A plant i had in my pond and it is a very easy plant to grow. Or some Irises can work very wel in a setup like this. Plus the irises are very good to keep your water quality high :)
Thank you! I never had an aquarium, I don't have the place or budget but I've been thinking for a while that I'd like to have a tiny tank with plants, shrimps and snail so I learnt a lot here!
Very good I have had several very similar vases with the time. They can be very biologically stable. I mainly feed them with poached stinging nettle leaves and sometimes tiny crumbles of cooked sea food. Though one thing I think is a bit risky in what you did and that is the amount of snails you directly added. I have made bad experiences with this; though the probability of the snails dying out in the tank is almost 0, it can lead to initial fatalities, especially if some of the Planorbella snails are very large. They need more "grazing space" then one might exspect and new tanks tend to be quite clean. So I would recommend viewers to stock less snails.
How cool! I just started one of these yesterday in a vase I found in my home. I have another one that is full of peace Lily, pothos, and some other vine plants. The baby shrimp and snails love climbing all over the roots 💕 thanks for the inspiration!!

Hey MD thank you for all the inspiration. Because of you and your channel I bought a tank last year and started my new hobby. I have had great succes using some of your methods on my 80 gallon tank and it looked beautiful, I even got a underwater plant to flower above the water. Since that tank did so good I decided to upsize, a 200 gallon tank was delivered to my house a couple of days ago. I am going to try and make a beatiful planted tank out of it that is in perfect balance. Because if anything I learned from this channel, balance is everything.
12:59 so cute how a bunch of them all congregated where the food is. They look so adorable! I'm not too big into underwater life, usually I only see the same type all gathered in one place, cool to see them diverse like that.
3:50 The reason to put a few inches of sand is to create a low oxygen environment in the substrate; as the bacteria responsible for denitrification (Nitrate to N2) are anaerobic, meaning they need a very low oxygen environment to thrive. The sand helps create an area that is suitable for this to occur efficiently.
I love all my plant and they always grow larger than my home can handle even though I share my plants with people........A lot of my plants come from people I know...this makes them special....I now want one of these pieces of art.
I set one of these up in my classroom and it's great. Just a little water top up each week and some extra food occasionally. We have shrimp, snails and neon tetras. The kids love it and so do I
Neon Tetra apparently should be in schools of 6 or more and they like a LOT more room than a vase will allow. I'm sure they make it look great but I can't imagine they'll live long in there.
@@batkat0 Really the only thing you should probably keep in a space that small are snails and shrimp. I did break that rule though with some tiny non-grouping fish that the shop had mixed into the same tank as the shrimp and snails. They seem to be doing well enough in a small environment. I forget the species...
You are amazing man, I wish here in my country home we could have access to so many amazing supplies for aquariums, but the hobby is not really that spread... watching your videos is just great info and inspiration. I'll try this with my kids.
i love this. recently created a tank like this in an extra large brandy glass. just waiting for plants to establish more before i put in shrimp and snails. it's so simple yet so stunning
This is very useful. I’ve been wanting shrimp so bad for years. I’ve bought probably 3 dozen in the last year, but all were lost for unknown reasons. But recently, I caught my betta in the act. It was killing my shrimp. It is a male and somewhat aggressive, but the female I had before him never went after shrimp so I thought they’d be okay. I considered returning the betta, as I live in an apartment and can’t have tons of different tanks for different animals, and I wanted shrimp more than him LOL but this vase seems like a great workaround. I’ve already got tons of live plants prepared. I did have some live substrate but I don’t think it’s enough for this tank. My current tank is a real hassle to clean, it’ll be relieving to have such a small simple system to maintain.
I know I certainly don’t have enough ambient light in my apartment though, so I’ll need to consider some lighting situation. Maybe just a tall lamp, I think I want the vase on my bed stand so I can watch them whenever.I really like shrimp LOL
Md I would rlly love to see u make a mudskipper tank. Something I believe you haven’t done before? Love the videos lately I get excited every time you upload ❤
I tried a big vase last week and it broke and emptied completely when I was gone :') thankfully I managed to save my shrimp thanks to the aquasoil that kept them wet
Thanks for the inspiration! I just started this project! I went to Ikea specifically to acquire this vase and make this project happen. I found some white pebbles there as well for substrate, some tiny plastic plant decorations for the bottom and I also purchased a Pothos plant as I hear they work well for filtration and you don't even need to plant them in dirt, you just stick some clippings right into the water and let the roots grow out! I've set it all up and the only thing I really need is the aquatic life now! Not too sure if I can host snails in mine though as I only used the pebbles for substrate. I'll inquire about that.
This is amazing on a lot of levels. But most importantly I've got that kind of vase for years (didn't buy it myself) and never thought of a way to use propertly. Now I've found one. Thank you,
What a beautiful gift and love this hobby room. If I had the space I would start this . I already grow my one favorite house plant basic boring super easy Pothos in water vases some in soil. I also love simple basic betta fish.
The second video I watched about this topic, started with tanks for nothing and oh boy the subject is great. Learned a lot and also had a giggle here and there, keep up the good work lad
Thank you for talking about snails. I got an aquarium just a few days ago. I bought it second hand and the previous owner gave me a lot of things to use that she no longer needed, including a lot of substrate that had been used for about a year, and in that, some snails. I wasn't sure about what to do with those, and at the moment I've just thrown every plants and such down in the aquarium so that they will survive until the weekend when I have time to really put things together properly. But yeah.. I think that the snails will stay, if they're not way to many. I have to count them.
Loved this tutorial MD! I haven't had an aquarium for many years and even then it was technically my husband's, I just helped with maintenance and feedings. But I want to break into the hobby on my own and this makes it so easy and low risk, which is perfect and a great way to begin learning. Thanks so much for the inspo and sharing your knowledge!
While one is listening with full attention to the entire aqua scape procedure, the smiling dog clip in between leaves you in splits. A good touch of unexpected humour added in between 😂
My dad had a fishtank and I never saw him change the water in the tank or clean the tank. Besides the tropical fish and the plants, he had snails in them and some sort of tiny eal on the bottom. He said that the eal kept the floor clean. You only noticed the snails when the glass started to become green. Suddenly the entire snail population was on the glass. Few days later, the glass was extremely clean again.
I remember when it was just you and your shed my man. I envy you. Wish I had one of those beautiful tanks. The pet stores here only sell trash tanks. None of them are rimless.
I have a small 10 litre tank and I've done EVERYTHING - the filter, the pump, lighting, thermometer, plants... To think I could have just done this! How do you feel about the Pure Aquarium Bomb for bacteria?
General question: Can bacteria establish in the ground if you "lock it down" with the fine sand? (I come from 20 years ago, no soil, and the teaching was "you can use sand or fine gravel, however, MAKE SURE it's all the same size so no detritus can sink between the grains and produce foul spots". It was also encouraged to use ground-dwelling snails who would act like earthworms and turn everything over) I know that bacteria will also establish on the plants and leaf litter, but I'm not so sure about the ground. That's my question, then :)
Looks beautiful! Snails are awesome..I have a 15ltr just for my two apple snails:) The shrimp look great against the bright green plants you've added. Off topic: I recently was given a baby blue crayfish. Made her a separate 30ltr with foam filter gravel, allodia densa ( which she leaves alone) water perfect! Put in a bit of driftwood from local shop. Soaking in in boiling water etc etc. It's been in about a week. Checked water today..ph dropped, ammonia up. Nitrate up! I've now removed it and done a 50% water change. Also added an Aqua Ball to help bacteria. Have you ever experienced driftwood doing this?! My snail tank never needs water change. Also has Elodea Densa plant and the same foam filter system. ❤️ the videos btw
Haven't watched one of your videos since you had just started. I think you had about 20,000 at the time. I just came back to your page to watch a ton of the videos I've missed in the last year...😂 And I can't believe how many subs you have now! It's so awesome to see! Congratulations! 🎉
Ramshorn are my favorite. If you accidentaly feed a bit more than necessary, they'll increase in amounts and balance it out. Eventual extra snails goes to puffer ;p
I would recommend starting at a 10 gallon level if you’re a beginner. With a small vase there isn’t much room for error. The bigger you go in tank size the more room you have for error
Terrible idea and it's practically abuse, way too much bioload in a nano tank and they all gonna be miserable or die. Shrimp are extremely fragile on top of it and it looked like he just threw them into that awful new setup without even acclimating them.
Should we do the top-ups with distilled water? To make sure that we don’t have too many minerals as a result of evaporation? Or it’s not an issue? Also, won’t the shrimp just jump out if you have such a small tank without a top?
@@Rebecca-zj4wq Like my basil in the window sill, that thing takes at least a half cup of water a day. But my goldfish's 2.5 gal needs about a quart a day for evaporation. It's just part of the game, isn't it?
I got SO inspired I had to try my hand….IKEA did not have the same vase here in the states, but I found one that is probable the same size. I just love watching your videos. Just WHAT did that dog do BTW, musta been something he wasn’t supposed to 😏 I wish I could share my new “tank” but I can’t see where I can post a photo. Love your stuff!
I would love to make this as a centerpiece for my home! May I know what snails are those and do I need to put in the usual conditioners for good bacteria and etc? How about plants? My local fish aquarium shop mostly have java ferns, would they be ok too? Thank you!
Wow second video of yours and I'm hooked! You are such a wonderful artist! Just got my first 2 gallon bowl, really enjoying learning from you, thank you!
Also the root cutting I had no idea about 😮 I always took the long roots and did my best getting them under substrate to anchor but new root growth makes so much more sense!
Can I invite you to look at a Calla lily or a Zantedeschia aethiopica is it’s Latin name (and maybe also orchids). I’m hesitant between planting one in water and changing the water every week or maybe creating an ecosystem for it. So I was wondering what would be for you the minimum in size and live requirement for one house plant in a vase? Also did I mention that the callas come in deep reds and purples and orange and yellow like a flame. Anyway thank for you video it’s a delight to watch you build 😊
Fabulous project. what is the lowest temperature the bright coloured shrimps and fancy snails happily go down to? and also - how come your snails don't destroy your plants? Mine totally trach them!
Hi folks! Love this video - got me going on my aquarium journey and its bringing me so much joy. Question: the guy at the fish store said to wait 6 weeks before adding shrimp and snails. He also to do a 25% water change for the lifetime of the tank. Is that what was done here? Thank you!
What other plants would you recommend for such a setup? I am in search of as many as possible to see my options. I love how this one turned out! I used to be in the hobby years ago, but unfortunately I had to stop because of changed circumstances and a severe lack of space.

I really love the small tank ones. Makes it seem more affordable for starters
@@Caffeinated_Warrior Agree. Fish, especially schooling fish, do not belong in a vase like the one in the video.
Love these! I’ve tried a few over the years and they are great on my desk!!!
Did MD give the idea?
😂😂😂 at the dog smiling meme. I enjoyed watching you putting this tank/vase together too.
I'm off to IKEA to buy this vase! I need to make this right now! Love this idea, thank you! I'm definitely going to do this. 🤩
You can find them at $1 stores and similar for way cheaper! I picked a few similar ones up for $2 a pop.
Did you do onw? Did it turn out the way you wanted? :)
Haven't yet no 😩😭 I'm definitely going to though!
@@lucyeccles9775 Do it :D Tomorrow, I'm buying plants for my new aquarium! We all need new projects.
Rewatching this video MD. I'd forgotten just how great this little build is and how much it influenced me :)
Thank you! I was just on the cusp of trying to do something like this myself! I love that it can also support some livestock!
I made one of these for my sister in law, I put in tank water from my extremely established.
The second video I watched about this topic, started with tanks for nothing and oh boy the subject is great. Learned a lot and also had a giggle here and there, keep up the good work lad
So glad I found your channel. I’m making 2 no tech tanks for my apartments. Total vibe….
I love these smaller, more affordable set ups.
You inspired me to do this for my work desk, this is easy and looks nice. Need to head to ikea 😂
Love this idea, such a great idea for a table or kitchen counter top
Thank you for talking about snails. I got an aquarium just a few days ago. I bought it second hand and the previous owner gave me a lot of things to use that she no longer needed, including a lot of substrate that had been used for about a year, and in that, some snails. I wasn't sure about what to do with those, and at the moment I've just thrown every plants and such down in the aquarium so that they will survive until the weekend when I have time to really put things together properly. But yeah.. I think that the snails will stay, if they're not way to many. I have to count them.
I love the "small" tanks or containers. Thanks for sharing your info about setting them up.
I’m so glad you gave praise to snails 🐌 - I love my little helpers 🪴 🐌 🌱
Great little setup! From now on I'm calling my tanks 'ecosystems' it sounds waay cooler this way!
The most creative and beautiful I've ever seen.
I found a large jar about this size with a rope attached to it so I am going to follow this step by step!
I remember when it was just you and your shed my man. I envy you. Wish I had one of those beautiful tanks. The pet stores here only sell trash tanks. None of them are rimless.
The most gorgeous aquariums I've seen. I am floored!
I would like you to do a 1gal Beta vase with the lid and 🪴 plant in the little dish-cover and roots inside/under water. I'VE ALWAYS LOVED THOSE.
I’m sure we have various names for water tanks, but the most common is a rain barrel
Looks beautiful! Snails are awesome..I have a 15ltr just for my two apple snails:)
The shrimp look great against the bright green plants you've added.
4:33 - kinda looks like a Giant is just finishing up a pint of Guinness! 😂
My thought exactly!
I have a vase I got for mothers day that I've been thinking of using😊 thanks for confirming that I can indeed use it, thank you @md
Little thing I dont want to sound naggy but pls dont put fish in aight?
@AceButHalfAsSwag definitely not, my not so brightly coloured cherry shrimp and a few ramshorn snails. I have 5 tanks, and the biggest is 160ltrs
@@mother2aprince711 Aight cool just concered because someone else I know keeps fish in a vase and I got scared
Haven't watched one of your videos since you had just started. I think you had about 20,000 at the time. I just came back to your page to watch a ton of the videos I've missed in the last year...😂 And I can't believe how many subs you have now! It's so awesome to see! Congratulations! 🎉
Thanks for letting me come see the studio. Only 2 and half years, I've been waiting 😂
Your videos don't do its justice!
Keep up with the great work! 😊
Cloudy water can “fix itself” in a couple day as well as jump staring your tanks with pre cycled water from other tanks
Thanks a ton from your newest subscriber...You rocked my (Aquatic)World! Cheers from Sunny SoCal
I needed this video I'm in the process of making one of these without lights and filter thanks M ❤
I am a new follower of this type of “?hobby “ but I absolutely love it. I would look to have one of these systems. Great video!
I'm going to do that!!! I have plenty of room for a vase like that. Can't wait to try it. 😊 Gina
I love this it is so beautiful and would nice on my cocktail table.
I feel like this is the starter project I’ve been looking for! I great way for me to experiment and learn
Ramshorn are my favorite. If you accidentaly feed a bit more than necessary, they'll increase in amounts and balance it out. Eventual extra snails goes to puffer ;p
Great idea! I'm thinking about setting up one of this, maybe with a lucky bamboo as well.
Thanks for sharing
MD. I have literally just stopped the video to take in the funniest thing I've seen in awhile. Thank you. 6:25
New to your channel, but you inspired me to start my own vase type ecosystem for shrimp, snails, and maybe a couple fish!
It’s inspiring. I would love to make a small no tech tank too. Please do update us on how the ecosystem vase tank doing 😃😃. Thank you! ❤
Thank you again for the simple builds !!! 🔥
How beginner friendly is this setup? I've never had an aquarium, but I've fallen completely in love with this idea!
How's this one doing these days?
We want an update
Didn't he mention it in another video? The plant kept drawing up all the water too fast to maintain water levels, so he agve up on it.
@@Rebecca-zj4wq Like my basil in the window sill, that thing takes at least a half cup of water a day. But my goldfish's 2.5 gal needs about a quart a day for evaporation. It's just part of the game, isn't it?
@@QuintessentialStudioyou have a goldfish in 2,5 gall?
@@dominikakratochvil860 Well, there are two goldfish but yes.
That play sand looks like it'd make the best sand cake ever
I got SO inspired I had to try my hand….IKEA did not have the same vase here in the states, but I found one that is probable the same size. I just love watching your videos. Just WHAT did that dog do BTW, musta been something he wasn’t supposed to 😏 I wish I could share my new “tank” but I can’t see where I can post a photo. Love your stuff!
What a great little project, MD! Thanks!
Been a while since I’ve seen a video but, dang I am liking the new space. Certainly a major step up in terms of the amount of room you have.
Also the root cutting I had no idea about 😮 I always took the long roots and did my best getting them under substrate to anchor but new root growth makes so much more sense!
Wow. Blown away by this. Thank you.
What is the purpose for all the water changes if you've already placed it in good water and have bio organisms rooting around?
my guess is to balance and stabilize everything out
Because water evaporates over time. It needs to be topped up. Hope that helps
You really have a gift for design! So lovely!
Very cool! I like it. Perfect plants for it.
That amazon is gonna look AMAZING once it starts reaching out further!😮💨😮💨
U have a great set up... im just starting mine. Appreciate all the tips n info. 👍🏻
Fabulous project. what is the lowest temperature the bright coloured shrimps and fancy snails happily go down to? and also - how come your snails don't destroy your plants? Mine totally trach them!
This is a lovely idea for a table centerpiece for an aquarium addict like me ❤
Hi folks! Love this video - got me going on my aquarium journey and its bringing me so much joy.
Question: the guy at the fish store said to wait 6 weeks before adding shrimp and snails. He also to do a 25% water change for the lifetime of the tank. Is that what was done here?
Thank you!
This is such a fantastic idea. Question: could you see this setup working with perhaps a peace lily, as you have with some other tanks?
it should work fine, but id reccomend a bigger container or the rrots might get out of hand
What other plants would you recommend for such a setup? I am in search of as many as possible to see my options. I love how this one turned out! I used to be in the hobby years ago, but unfortunately I had to stop because of changed circumstances and a severe lack of space.
