You forgot to mention one important thing that took me some time to find out, because it is totally not advertised: Use RMB with the matter manipulator! The matter manipulator's left mouse button absorbs or places matter in the foreground, but you can also use the right mouse button to do that with the background! See an ore vein in the background? You can mine it! You crafted fence material, but when you place it you can't go through, just jump on top? place it in the background instead. You flattened some ground for your new home but there's ugly remains in the background? remove them as well. When you build a house, don't forget to place walls in the back, or your house is really just an arch. Need more light in your new house? erase the background, and place a window there instead. :) In some other video I heard this useful tip: If you're not too deep under ground, you can remove some background and stand on the created hole, and that enables the teleporter button.
Yeah, of all the tips in the video that one is the one I think most new players really don't know -- but once I learned what flags do I couldn't stop using them.
I am a newbie to this genre of games, must say very addictive game to play but also quite hard, at least for me. Finally found out how to make weapons . Needles to say I died a lot the fist 2 hours
I'm kind of a nomad type of player, but I still make sure to grow some crops in my ship at the start of the game. Eventually I'll choose a place and put a teleporter in it. for this purpose I found the depths of Ocean planets perfect as you can just make a house with no doors to the outside and only the teleporter as way to get in, that way you're 100% sure nothing will get in, ever... and it also looks cool
the fact that he said swing a flashlight around wile in a cave at daytime makeeees me think he didnt know about mining the background when using RMB.. xD
So I just started and I learned most of this stuff as I kept playing but as I continue the story I'm expected to defeat bosses and stuff and it becomes extremely difficult leaving me feel as if I'm underpowered. How do I get better gear to start progressing more efficiently
I like the way you made this video, on point and short but the things you talk about is pretty much in the game's missions or with other words tutorial. And it makes sense to read the controls before you start playing the game. But yeah recently someone asked on the forum how to prepare food in the game... Seriously?! Some people shouldn't play games if they can't figure out the simplest things also see or read what is in front of them.
tk u for taken the time to do this .. question is there a key to push where I can zoom round the map and look ? and most important when is your next video lol waitin to c how u do the diamond quest as I am trying to get though it lol its a hard one lol well for me I should say ha ha
Yes, pressing CTRL lets you look around -- you can't go too far away (your character still needs to be in the window), but it's a useful tool for looking at what is ahead/below you. As for the next episode: Soon. Soon.
Tip #11: be like me and have someone who plays starbound on your friends list and have them make some overpowered custom gear for you. my armor? looks just like my profile pic and makes me invincible.

How do I do that using a controller? Do you know?
thanks! the flags are a real help
No problem! I just wish the flags were better advertised in the game--as it is, I think a lot of folks dismiss them at first as just a cosmetic item.
Wow i totally didnt know anything about the Flag markers. That makes traveling around so much easier. Thanks for that!!!
Yeah, of all the tips in the video that one is the one I think most new players really don't know -- but once I learned what flags do I couldn't stop using them.
Your voice makes me believe in the general goodness of mankind.

What about Alt? He highlights all the chests (preferably generated) on the screen
Yep, a handy little tip that; thanks for mentioning! (That would certainly be in had my video gone to 11.)

You said press X for a second hotbar, what about on controller?
this was great
Do you have other tips for new Starbound players? What other advice would you give to someone just starting out in the game?
Also, shhh...ignore my mistake at 4:01 -- that should be RMB, not LMB...
To tell them to not use this guide

Also hold alt to find underground chests
I never comment. but thank you for clear simple instructions.
