I can seriously relate to the "inspiration + execution but no motivation" bit. So many ideas written down as notes on my phone, art competitions and challenges open in browser tabs, yet only 1% end up being brought to life. I'm always so terrified to start a new project, because what if it's not perfect? What if I'm a failure and an embarrassment to the concept of art itself? It takes so much energy to overcome that fear and I'm already drained from studying graphic design.
"When you're not inspired the first thing you have to do is take a break" Tmw you take too much "breaks" due to online classes but it only drains your "creative tank" lol :''))
I think "breaks" shud only range from 1 hour to a week and never past that, becoz then you forget what pace you are in your art. this happens to me when I make my COMICS
I needed this. Although I’ve been drawing, another hobby of mine is writing, which I have pushed off. I’ve had trouble getting myself to leave youtube to actually do something productive, but the lack of said productivity is killing me. I really needed to hear that sometimes being bored is how you get motivated and even somewhat inspired. I think I’ll try getting off of UA-cam for a little while and see what I can get done.
When I don't have motivation and inspiration I usually turn to realism since I'm a mainly "semi realistic (idk rlly lol) artist" and doing realism can be good at those times bc I don't need to come up with my own ideas much.
@@trixxartarchive7705 I used to hate realism too 😂 but one time I forced myself to try it properly and now I love it! I still prefer my normal art style but I do enjoy it now
Same ! Usually when i don't have any inspiration/motivation i do a ton of studies, so that i actually progress and rentabilise my time doing something useful !
Hey LavenderTowne, I have an idea for the next video: “Making Famous Horror Dolls into Cute Girls (+guys)” Ex: Chucky, Slappy, Annabelle, and Tiffany (Chucky’s wife) It’s just a suggestion, and you don’t have to do this if you don’t want to.
while that does sound interesting, i feel it'd be really easy and wouldn't take much creative merit for lavendertowne to draw as they already have their own designs. turning them "cute" by her standards would just mean giving them long eyelashes, different clothing, soft features etc stuff like that. basically taking away all the components that made them "scary" or unpleasant looking, but that doesn't make your idea invalid by any means!! that's just what i think haha
I have a chronic case of "write it in my head, draft it in daydreams, practically act it out... and then completely disconnect or freeze up when trying to physically write / draw / commit it to paper" so I 110% needed this video. Thank you!!!
As a graphic design student, I completely understand the fact that keeping on doing work regardless of how you feel is essential. If I only worked on things when I was hit with inspiration or was super motivated, I'd get nothing done. I have discovered that sometimes just doing causes inspiration and then motivation picks up because you get excited about the idea.
Something that's helped me in the past when I was just sitting at my tablet all 'head empty no thoughts' was to pull up some old artwork I was really proud of making in the past and redraw it. It can be as little as 6 months old or as much as 6 years, but it gives me something to do that puts me in that headspace to draw and gives me a sense of direction. Some of my favorite drawings have been redraws of my old stuff because I could feel proud of finally feeling like I was able to present it the way I envisioned in my mind when I wasn't skilled enough at the time to execute it.
I was literally thinking about this as I was trying to find time to do some hand-drawn sketches that I keep delaying until tomorrow. But hey, I'm not going to let time get in the way you of practicing my sketching skill. Have a great night to you all!! Edit: I draw a bunch of stuff, from Screenshots of Helluva Boss and Hazbin Hotel, to anything that Interesting to me. And again, Have a Good night you guys!!
I totally understand that honestly, when I was starting out it drove me crazy knowing someone could be so much better than me and still get no attention, but I've realized now that getting 'success' has a lot more to do with trying lots of things and being consistent than it has to do with raw talent. Which sounds bad at first but is in a way inspiring, because it means if you have the will to keep going you really don't have to be a perfect artist to make it.
My problem lies in execution. I don't feel like I am where I should be and for the longest time, and I mean for years, I didn't draw anything. This in turn took a toll in my motivation because whenever I had an idea I would be too scared to execute it because it wouldn't look good in the end. This year I want to work on this and something that helps me personally is going to my favorite artists' social media and looking at their techniques and the creative process behind their art. I hope this helps anyone out there who has the same issue. Thank you for the tips, Haley! Also your work area is super cute!
Most of my art inspiration is from the Netflix cartoon Hilda. I’m also aware that there is a graphic novel series, I actually have the first book. Most of my technique comes from the show. I learned a lot just from doing fan art about anatomy and such. That’s how I came up with my art style.
One of the things that helps me is drawing fanart! I mostly work on character designs and just drawing my OCs in general, but when I’m completely lost for motivation and inspiration, I just let myself have a break by drawing fanart of something I love. ^^
As a kid, I would always get motivation at bedtime because that was when I wasn't allowed to really do much, so I would always draw in bed, and now I find that this made me naturally "Trained" to be motivated in a comfy spot.
"A young girl named Shiva lives on the other side, in a vacant village with a demonic guardian known only as “Teacher.” Although the two are forbidden to touch, they seem to share a bond that transcends their disparate appearances." It's a really good read and has inspired me a lot with its art style
That “girl from the other side” comic has panels that gave me what I needed to finish a drawing I got stuck on. Wow, I know that is random but I’m so glad you shared it! What wonderful lineart. Great advice, too!
Great video! Sometimes you just have to start drawing even when you don’t feel initial motivation. Usually when you start doing instead of overthinking, you get motivation and inspiration. It’s easy to think about drawing but a lot harder to start, but once you start the motivation will kick in. Other times you might be burnt out which is a whole different thing and you need to step away. Don’t give up! 😃
as a kid whenever i couldn’t find a book in the library,, i would always go back to “the secret of the stone frog”. i wish i could physically have it because it’s honestly so great. i honestly feel it would really inspire me haha
The advice about just sitting in the bath is 100% what I do! Twice a week, just an hour yet if I scroll through my Tumblr at least half my favourite ideas have come from this time lol.
Overall great tips (Especially the 'boredom'-one) but I have to hard disagree with the last tip. I used to be in that mindset of "I HAVE to get this done, no matter how inspired/motivated I am" for a few months back in Summer, because I was doing weekly webcomic releases, which not only led to some of the worst art I had ever made, but also to a 3 month long art block and near burnout. No project is worth sacrificing your mental health for is the biggest lesson I took from that. I know you said that this tip doesn't apply to everyone, however I personally had no idea how harmful this mindset was for me until it was already too late. So imo if you want to try out this kind of workflow, do it for a week. Then look at your art, check your mental health, and really evaluate if this is worth it.
As someone who does story writing, Ive always wanted to express my feelings and ideas through writing, Its where i first found my passion to it, And now i wanted to learn art so could express my ideas further, by being able to draw the scenery and the characters, and my ideas for the story ive always found these 2 to be pleasant at expressing yourself more through other mean's And lately im having difficulty trying to find the right motivation to even start drawing, it was really rough, i couldn't hold a pencil and a paper for longer than 5 minutes and i'd already give up, i would always want to push myself to try and improve and no matter what i do, like its not a big deal i can just pick myself back up again, But everytime i try to do so id keep falling further behind, and at that point i was beggining to doubt myself, i have this habit of always comparing my works to others and feeling bad about it, I was just feeling so low and burnt out i thpught to myself wether or not im going to be able to draw like other people, wether or not im going to able to share my ideas to other's and be proud of it And this video definetly helped me picked myself back up, This video was my stepping stone to achieving my dream, to stay motivated and push through, Art takes a long time to learn and i know that if i cower away like this i wouldn't make any progress, and this video told me that.💕 Thank you Lavender🙏
Holy crap The key really is boredom for me, I get it now. I constantly fill my head with content or music, I am constantly entertained, there is no downtime or anything. I dont feel motivated cause I have no motivation cause I need no motivation. I already got what I want so I dont need to work for it.
this is great timing, because i just spent around 6 - 7 hours of drawing, and then i started to loose motivation. im not surprised, but i still wanted to keep going TvT
Fantastic video! Honestly, I also experience a huge lack of motivation most times which really depresses me, because I want to become a professional animator. Every time I try to draw to improve my drawing skills, I feel like I´m not passionate and creative enough for this field, but I try to handle that. Wish you all a great time!
Oh my god! The advice about making yourself bored makes so much sense. I would doodle like full ink pictures during my classes all of the time, like to the point i would have to block out where my notes were, because I would be so bored sometimes.
A trick of mine is to keep a long list of stuff I would find really interesting to draw that I make when I do have ideas and whenever I feel like idk what to draw I just tell my phone to pick a number and do whatever my phone picks according to the listed number next to it and I find that really useful and it works for me
Lavender Towne: Take a bath and don't take you're phone in Me: (taking a moment to realize what she said, and just realizing it) wait people take a bath with their phones??
thank you for giving me motivation today. I suffer from drepresion a lot and this manifests in lack of motivation mainly... but now I really feel like getting up, brush my teeth und hair and start drawing again. Thank you alot, you are a great atist and content creator.
Whenever I'm trying to draw but I'm dealing with one of these problems I just watch one of your videos. That always does the trick no matter what I'm lacking somehow
This is what I needed! I've been thinking of redesigning my main character, bc he's a bit on the boring side, and I've been lazy with it, and I ACTUALLY changed some things while watching this! Like his concept is looking better all ready! THANK YOU SO MUCH, like this is what inspired me to finally change the design.
Thank you so much for making this video! I’ve been seriously unmotivated for months now (and occasionally don’t have ideas) and it’s nice getting some useful advice I also agree with you: I realized that I have the most ideas when I’m bored, tired, or stressed out. I’d be more motivated and inspired to draw when I was at school than when I’m at home and stress free
When I don't have any motivation, I just... take a break. Like, oh I don't feel like doing anything, so I just... don't. That doesn't happen very often though. Usually I love making art, I'm inspired by many things. I always love to draw, usually I don't get unmotivated. I take motivation from so many different forms of media. But if I'm bored, I just take a moment to just sit back and enjoy life, and when I am motivated, I take it to heart. I don't like to make messes either. Usually I just use my PC or phone to draw, and I don't have much else to keep track of. I just draw because it's fun. I don't do art professionally. Yeah sleep deprivation is a problem sometimes, but most of all I enjoy drawing so I do it.
Thank you so much this actually helped me I am an animator and every single time I try to animate I always think it’s a literal garbage but now you have inspired me to try my best and do all the work I can to get a good animation thank you 😊
So I was watching/listening to this while I was working on my bujo, and I looked up and gasped because we have the EXACT SAME MARKER/PEN BAG!!!! I bought it because the design is genius and exactly what I needed after having traditional pencil bags for so long. It's even sitting on my desk right now in basically the same spot as yours lol!
What I do to keep my motivation up is just to listen to your voice no literally like when your talking about advices or whatever in your videos I always finish my arts without losing my motivation
@Darling Vexa Art No actually- a person who has lots of time in the world but always gets lazy and unmotivated. Sorry i kind of thought what I said was more clear but apparently it wasn’t 😅
Bruh I literally was dealing lack of motivation and inspiration for almost a week, and was rock bottom, and I was just hand knitting a bunch a hats, then this vid pops up, tysm!❤️
the work space thing for me is *so* important because it really determines how motivated i am most of the time. without a neat space and the right posture, i completely fall apart
I was sort of hoping this video would address what i can do if i hate literally everything I try to draw... I can't even look at my own art while I'm drawing it, it makes me feel terrible. It's ugly and gross and i used to be able to like what i drew, but i can't anymore.
I have an idea but Idk how you might feel about it. Draw something, anything, and then come back to it a week later. When you come back, write down everything you want to change. And then redraw it with all the little notes and changes added in. And sometimes you might find you don't even enjoy drawing in the general style of what you're drawing. My other advice is to either use more references, or to just stop drawing for awhile so that your brain stops thinking about it so much and you come back clean and refreshed.
I’ve felt the way you do and one thing that has been helping recently is just... studying the basics. Study perspective, shading, basic shapes, composition.Understand how things work. Add details to your art. Understand why you hate your art and look at what other artists are doing right that you think you are doing wrong. Learn from that. Take things step by step. Gradually your art is going to look better and you’ll be happier. It sounds painful but there’s plenty videos and other resources that could help you out
Having a goal is great for motivation. Earlier this year I made my goal to just draw [thing that I like] every day and my record has been consistent for the past month. And I hit 1k on instagram so yay! Don’t be afraid to draw fandom content. Turning a study into a labor of love is great for motivation.
I really needed this video! Today I’ve just been so exhausted and uninspired, witch led to me feeling unmotivated. Hearing someone else talk about it is very helpful.
I also hate it when the execution is being outpaced by inspiration. When your ideas take a long to make, but while your materializing the idea you end up getting inspiration for something else. So you want to make something calm and depressing, but your in the process of doing something more energetic.
Man. I am late to the partyyyy. I have many things to say about this video (I'm late, so nobody will probably read this, but it's worth a shot lol) I can't believe how much this video resonates with me. I have watched plenty of "how to remove art block" videos or "how to find inspiration", but they never fully seemed to include everything I need. In this video, I feel called out for me just really having a lack of motivation (stupid attention span as well) and not JUST artblock. But, she provides suggestions on how to overcome the issue/s. The "not listening to music or anything in the shower" is what I have recently JUST started doing again actually. Because, I have noticed that most of the time, due to overstimulation from technology, I'm not talking to myself much anymore. Because I don't want to, cuz of my anxiety and depression. (I am trying my best to manage it. It's a slow process) But, you HAVE to be bored to be able to THINK thoughts. I do have a problem though. And it's in regard to "what I actually want out of this?". And I don't know. I'm not a storyteller, so I can't aim to create a manga of my own. I do wanna be able to expand outside of just being able to draw anime (I'm still working on my anatomy. I didn't draw consistently for more than a decade [long story]. I need practice still, and with practice, comes inspiration. I think I have the discipline to learn more once I know which path maybe works for me, I think I can learn at a good pace). I guess in a job I want, I would want for someone to give me a theme or inspiration, and I can build and make art around or about that. Not a quick deadline, but I work well when I procrastinate. Preferably digital (because it requires less materials that need to be replenished often) and I can learn that. I can also learn watercolor though cuz it's been a fun medium. Would graphic design work? I also feel like the market's so saturated now with artists, and I also feel old (32) that I don't think I'll have what it takes to make a living out of it. I feel like making art feeds my soul though. A lot of my passion involves being creative. Cooking, baking, drawing/painting. I -enjoy those. And I don't want to ever give them up. But I wanna find a good earning career (wishful thinking lol) with what I love to do. That's all.
My problem is whenever I try to look for inspiration from books I end up just copying what’s in it instead of coming up with something myself (and of course can’t execute what I want to make just frustrating me)

I take a break and then I just hear this song in my head and then I wanna animate it
I think "breaks" shud only range from 1 hour to a week and never past that, becoz then you forget what pace you are in your art. this happens to me when I make my COMICS

"Have a neat space"
Me: sitting in the middle of my room, on the floor, surrounded by a mess and having terrible posture... "Well, f@ck"
I came back to say that I’ve still be procrastinating. Sorry to the 43 people who believed in me. :/
Man I can’t wait for the day we can own a physical copies of Unfamiliar. Just thinking of seeing it on my shelf makes me so excited!
How we feeling now?
When I don't have motivation and inspiration I usually turn to realism since I'm a mainly "semi realistic (idk rlly lol) artist" and doing realism can be good at those times bc I don't need to come up with my own ideas much.
I kinda hate doing realism because I am really bad at it but that might just be because I am primarily a cartoonist.
@@trixxartarchive7705 I used to hate realism too 😂 but one time I forced myself to try it properly and now I love it! I still prefer my normal art style but I do enjoy it now
@@MintysSketchbook I do sometimes try realism and I enjoy things like drawing the eyes and the noses.
@@trixxartarchive7705 eyes are so fun 😆
Same ! Usually when i don't have any inspiration/motivation i do a ton of studies, so that i actually progress and rentabilise my time doing something useful !
One thing I've found helps me focus on my art is listening to music, heck I have a 2 hour long playlist just for drawing.
I saw the Eevee pokemin collection and immediately went: I need this. Eevee is the best pokemon
Next up on lavendertowne: cat breeds as cute girls
Hey LavenderTowne, I have an idea for the next video:
“Making Famous Horror Dolls into Cute Girls (+guys)”
Ex: Chucky, Slappy, Annabelle, and Tiffany (Chucky’s wife)
It’s just a suggestion, and you don’t have to do this if you don’t want to.
Don’t forget the Saw puppet dude (I don’t remember his name)
Nice
@@tiredpeaches his name is jigsaw lol
while that does sound interesting, i feel it'd be really easy and wouldn't take much creative merit for lavendertowne to draw as they already have their own designs. turning them "cute" by her standards would just mean giving them long eyelashes, different clothing, soft features etc stuff like that. basically taking away all the components that made them "scary" or unpleasant looking, but that doesn't make your idea invalid by any means!! that's just what i think haha
@@tiredpeaches shes already drawn him!! heres the video ^ ^ ua-cam.com/video/BUwjyRzGLTs/v-deo.html
One thing that makes me unmotivated and lose inspiration is seeing artists who are so good but still underrated
@@LavenderTowne love your videos Haley
When I finish a drawing I think it looks nice, but later when I look other people's art I start to think that my art is trash and it makes me sad.
Don't look at other people's art ,ok got it
As soon as I don't feel motivated lavendertown posted something about it.
LavenderTowne's videos are therapeutic-
Most of my art inspiration is from the Netflix cartoon Hilda. I’m also aware that there is a graphic novel series, I actually have the first book. Most of my technique comes from the show. I learned a lot just from doing fan art about anatomy and such. That’s how I came up with my art style.
I just watch sketch with me videos and then BOOM
Sketchbook overload
Lavendertowne: get bored
Me: laughs in ADHD
Having ADHD and being a artist is legitimately hard, you desperately want to draw, but you keep getting distracted or procrastinating.
As a fellow ADHD artist I feel this comment- rip my concentration.
art with adhd is way too diffucult, i see people posting art daily and i just cannot compare. sometimes i got months without drawing
its a bigger mess with an Asperger's syndrome as a cherry on top ;-;
For me it's D.I.D, ADHD, and fetol alcohol syndrome
One of the things that helps me is drawing fanart! I mostly work on character designs and just drawing my OCs in general, but when I’m completely lost for motivation and inspiration, I just let myself have a break by drawing fanart of something I love. ^^
I have a limitless supply of imagination, but my motivation has run dry as hell
I’m sad to say I can agree I do get motivated to do art because of my 2021 New Years resolution DRAW EVERY DAY
As a kid, I would always get motivation at bedtime because that was when I wasn't allowed to really do much, so I would always draw in bed, and now I find that this made me naturally "Trained" to be motivated in a comfy spot.
“Girl From the Other Side” actually sounds interesting, does anyone know what it’s about?
"A young girl named Shiva lives on the other side, in a vacant village with a demonic guardian known only as “Teacher.” Although the two are forbidden to touch, they seem to share a bond that transcends their disparate appearances." It's a really good read and has inspired me a lot with its art style

As someone who does story writing, Ive always wanted to express my feelings and ideas through writing, Its where i first found my passion to it, And now i wanted to learn art so could express my ideas further, by being able to draw the scenery and the characters, and my ideas for the story ive always found these 2 to be pleasant at expressing yourself more through other mean's
And lately im having difficulty trying to find the right motivation to even start drawing, it was really rough, i couldn't hold a pencil and a paper for longer than 5 minutes and i'd already give up, i would always want to push myself to try and improve and no matter what i do, like its not a big deal i can just pick myself back up again, But everytime i try to do so id keep falling further behind, and at that point i was beggining to doubt myself, i have this habit of always comparing my works to others and feeling bad about it, I was just feeling so low and burnt out i thpught to myself wether or not im going to be able to draw like other people, wether or not im going to able to share my ideas to other's and be proud of it
And this video definetly helped me picked myself back up, This video was my stepping stone to achieving my dream, to stay motivated and push through, Art takes a long time to learn and i know that if i cower away like this i wouldn't make any progress, and this video told me that.💕
Thank you Lavender🙏
it's only been 5 days and i already missed you!! so happy you're updating so rapidly your videos just give me that serotonin i so desperately need!!

The key really is boredom for me, I get it now. I constantly fill my head with content or music, I am constantly entertained, there is no downtime or anything. I dont feel motivated cause I have no motivation cause I need no motivation. I already got what I want so I dont need to work for it.
this is great timing, because i just spent around 6 - 7 hours of drawing, and then i started to loose motivation. im not surprised, but i still wanted to keep going TvT
make sure to take short breaks to stretch your wrist! I did some damage drawing for periods like that in art school :'(
Comparing myself to other artists and seeing where I fall short, really gets me drawing
This came at just the right time. Cuz its happening to me

Yup
Same omg
Same here...
Honestly same. Its been going on for 2.5 years
A trick of mine is to keep a long list of stuff I would find really interesting to draw that I make when I do have ideas and whenever I feel like idk what to draw I just tell my phone to pick a number and do whatever my phone picks according to the listed number next to it and I find that really useful and it works for me
Lavender Towne: Take a bath and don't take you're phone in

_I’m the problem haha_
Oh yea one time I brought my phone in the bathroom my dad does that too, the bathroom is where the source of motivation is coming from......

Hi hi!
Thanks😊
This is what I needed! I've been thinking of redesigning my main character, bc he's a bit on the boring side, and I've been lazy with it, and I ACTUALLY changed some things while watching this! Like his concept is looking better all ready! THANK YOU SO MUCH, like this is what inspired me to finally change the design.
How to get motivated;
Watch lavender towne and her beautifulness
Thank you so much for making this video! I’ve been seriously unmotivated for months now (and occasionally don’t have ideas) and it’s nice getting some useful advice
I also agree with you: I realized that I have the most ideas when I’m bored, tired, or stressed out. I’d be more motivated and inspired to draw when I was at school than when I’m at home and stress free
I'm so glad I saw the Mario Odyssey artbook at the store. It feels, I don't know... justifying(?) seeing the squiggly, goofy drawings on sticky notes.
Why do artists get Lazy:
1.

@Darling Vexa Art oh no I’m not upset by it at all! You’re fine!
Bruh I literally was dealing lack of motivation and inspiration for almost a week, and was rock bottom, and I was just hand knitting a bunch a hats, then this vid pops up, tysm!❤️
I wish I had room to draw with my tablet. I think the tiny, cluttered trailer I'm living in is definitely stagnating my motivation.
the work space thing for me is *so* important because it really determines how motivated i am most of the time. without a neat space and the right posture, i completely fall apart

I have many things to say about this video (I'm late, so nobody will probably read this, but it's worth a shot lol)
I can't believe how much this video resonates with me.
That's all.
I just got my stuff open in the background and haven't actually touched it in hours
Is it just me that finds her voice super relaxing
My problem is whenever I try to look for inspiration from books I end up just copying what’s in it instead of coming up with something myself (and of course can’t execute what I want to make just frustrating me)
I always come back to your videos when I lose inspiration and motivation, thank you for making this video.💕
