Everyone is familiar with paradoxical systemic embolism.
But what is paradoxical pulmonary embolism?
Paradoxical pulmonary embolism can occur from an abdominal aortic aneurysm through and aortocaval fistula. The fistula can occur either after a spontaneous rupture of the abdominal aorta into the inferior vena cava or a traumatic rupture or even after surgery. Fistulas can also be there after an intervention, but these are usually closed after the procedure with a device.
