John Anderson Not arguing with your reliability point as I’m not familiar enough; however my own friends who are also mechanics don’t seem to have a problem over any other cars they’ve owned. For your other points though, to be fair I don’t think anyone is getting this car for quarter mile times.. American cars have come a long way but there aren’t many that handle like a BRZ in its class. And that’s why you get these cars. They’re very fast in the corners.
John Anderson if accelerating in a straight line is all you care about then by all means stay as FAR AWAY as possible from the likes of BRZ/86 and Miata since these cars aren’t built for straight line speed. I traded in my V8 charger for a manual 86 because I wanted to learn how to drive fast on the racetrack and the 86 is the perfect tool for the job. Teaches you so much about car control and gives you so much feedback, but then again you only car about straight line speed and drag racing and all that stuff that hardly require any skills.
John Anderson yes I agree that the BRZ does not seem like it has the best value for the price and interior quality is somewhat cheap. But I feel like that’s the point of this car, a minimalistic lightweight sports car that resembles the classic JDM cars in the late 80s/early 90s. The Kia Stinger is a VERY good car and honestly I was tempted to get one of those used if not for it doesn’t come with a manual option. The thing is if you want more “interior quality” and such it would most likely come in the form of more weight, and the Stjnger is A LOT heavier than the BRZ despite it being not that much bigger. I never said that the BRZ is fast, because it’s not, not even on the racetrack, well it is through corners if you do it right but you know... it’s more like it teaches you how to drive fast and trains you really well for the fundamentals of racing techniques. Make no mistake I WILL upgrade to something else when I have the money, but for now, my 86 is perfect for what I need. And yes I do go to the track for HPDE events more than 5 times a year. I try to go once every month or so. Will be going again in late October for one last time this year before winter comes.
Hahahaha yes a 450-500 hp 4×4 pick up truck will beat a brz and fiesta st but do you know how many trucks that were ahead of me from red light to red light as soon as we got winding roads I was up their tailpipe then after I was passed them on a sweeping curve I never saw them again as the roads turns left them shaken because they were about to roll over as i didnt even have to hit the brakes by the end of the 5 min. Drive the powerful truck never even saw me again ......fiesta st 20ishk brz 25ishk truck 50k better in a straight line but still not that far ahead few car lengths around turns so many car lengths ahead the truck is a memory. As crazy as it sounds pro race car driver took stock fiesta st vs hellcat and fiesta had best overall track time by granted only a .16 and better consistent time of a tenthish more. And I hear the BRZ gets even better times than the fiesta st
Even after 7 years, people still bring up the objection for “tHiS nEeDs MoRe PoWa” If this came with more horesepower, the it defeats its purpose of being an affordable sports car. It’s a Tuner car FFS! Meaning it’s a blank canvas for anyone to mod the crap out of it. If you want more power, you have 370’z. The original 86 from the 80’s stood for the same purpose - Affordable fun sports car.
Cham JDM “more power” =/= “unaffordable” Using the 2.4l would have cost nothing incrementally and using the WRX power plant could have been done reasonably as well. Everything that is good about this car would be better with 50-80 more hp and lb-ft. And 370’s are a terrible comparison of old, heavy, wallowing, 2-seat garbage.
@@ChevyCamaroIsBetter you're right I've driven a new one and loved it. I mean I've driven new mustangs and stuff but they don't handle that good to me compared to the brz, civic, miata
Peak power isn't my only issue with this car, it's the torque dip from 3,250-4,500 right in the meat of the power band. Having driven most iterations of the Miata (NA, NB & ND) and Mustang (most everything from the 60's to current, save the new GT350), either are better options. I currently drive a (mildly modified) 2006 WRX wagon that destroys a BRZ in every aspect of driving except for driftability in the dry, in the rain and snow my WRX out drifts a BRZ. All of that stated, I know people that have and love BRZs/86s, it's just not the right option for me.
Got a 1 of 100 turboed brz in US. Making around 350 on stock internals, everything else has been upgraded, pump cooling, clutch. Got a gtx3076R hks turbo kit. That makes it sounds like a pigeon, fits perfectly with the color and sound!. 22k miles on it currently. Looking to K swap when motor takes a dump, currently sitting on 8-14 psi. Just recently hit 17psi. And no issues had accured from a quite a few pulls. Able to keep up or beat alot of v8's which is not bad at all. Extremely fun car!

Another benefit of satellite radio, is you can drive a LONG distance without ever losing signal. There are many places where the only option is a country station and a half-dozen religious stations. With Satellite radio, your stations never change and never drop out. Spotify is good if you have a playlist downloaded and want to specifically listen to that, but otherwise there are still plenty of areas in the US where cell signal strength/speed drops off HARD outside of a good sized town. My only issue with satellite radio is that my signal gets blocked by large buildings to the South of my car when driving through cities with even moderately tall buildings (i.e. ~4 stories or taller), or when really close to a building, such as when in the drive thru at Starbucks.
Yuri - Thanks for clearing up the satellite radio thing for us - that was bugging me! Your reasoning makes perfect sense. Keep up the good work fellas.
I agree with Jacob and Yuri here. In my experience, the Subaru BRZ's handle slightly more comfortably compared to the Toyota 86, however the BRZ Subaru has the much much better infotainment. The manual BRZ and 86 twins are still marginally more fun than convertible miatas and can seat four people. A Subaru BRZ truly is a budget Porsche 911. If you want more power look at the Nissan 370Z it is awesome too. A Nissan 350z and 370z or any other muscle car will have a great time with the horsepower, but there is a fun aspect of driving affordable 200hp manual cars like the humble Subaru BRZ, Honda Civic Si, and Kia Forte GT/Hyundai Elantra Sport twins.

After a bunch of hours of research, I discovered that for those under 25yr old, the 2019 GT86 is nearly $600/yr less for full coverage insurance than the 2019 BRZ (specifically clean record, drivers ed, etc). There are many possible reasons as to why, but it is still very fascinating, given that they are (essentially) the same car. This is for insurance in N.S. specifically. Not sure about elsewhere.
David Eisener good luck even finding a BRZ here in the U.K, and price to buy is crazy compared with GT86 which as you say essentially the same car and also not sure why. The mind boggles.

I work at a Subaru dealership in Service and for the 2013 models of the BRZ along with the Imprezas, Legacies, and Crosstrek had a recall for Valve spring not the valves themselves. BMW has the same problem with 2nd gear. Reverse is designed to be smoother to get into the faster you go into it and if you try to go into 2nd really quickly, you go past it and it seems like you can't get into second. That lead to me just coasting in the middle of a crossroads, unable to apply power to the wheels a few times before I realised this. Not a comfortable situation when you have traffic coming at you at full speed.
You said lifters but the recall is for the valve springs. I have a boosted 2013 FRS. I got my recall notice in the mail, but i'm not acting on it. It's handled boost for 30k miles reliably with track days included, i'm not gonna risk having a tech mess it up. When/if it goes, that just means more upgrades. lol.
Jon Dagata apparently quite rare valve springs do break, but think if they break could be dangerous and a lot to repair, if not taken for recall before.
@@Joolz1982 the dealership wanted to charge me labor to take off my aftermarket turbo kit and parts. One. More power then torque. But secondly. Give it the na 2.4. It wine lighter and if they can keep the character of the engine the same figure 241 HP and 187 lbft. 20% bump with 20% increase in displacement. Dont know if it works quite like that. But then give it a turbo for around 290 hp and 240 lbft for a higher trim.
@@chadhanson4369 do you even know what your talking about. Nice is subjective. Furthermore Subarus are far more efficient then Jeeps and especially dodge. Dodge doesn't sell to the same market and especially not Jeep either. Subaru doesn't sell a single truck, or any dedicated offroad vehicles. America is the second largest car market behind China. And Americans have this false notion that American made equals good and foreign is bad. And that American made engines especially V8 equals great. The Hellcat motor is some of the most low technology, low quality, crudeness that has ever been made. Somehow it only makes 707 hp on 6.2L that's BOOSTED. That's barely over 100hp/l with BOOST. It has pushrods and only 2 valves per cylinder. Overhead cams caught up to pushrods in reliability 30 years ago. Also subaru is a much smaller company with a smaller marketing arm to start with and less dealerships. So they will always sell less.

I actually like the sun visor - it's big , not tiny ones like in most cars. It does it job well- I like it. What I don't like is 205 hp and low torque. In any event, I like this car- just so fun to drive !! And yes, a lot flatter around the corners compared to the miata , which is a good thing.
The next BRZ is getting a detuned TURBO ASCENT engine from 263hp to 217. Also I'm glad you guys addressed why you don't talk about issues with the cars you test. Sounds like the beginnings of another channel.....
A low key difference between the 86 vs BRZ is the toyota cars are built with Direct and port injection where as the BRZ only has direct injection ""The Toyota direct injection system I described above is referred to as D-4S and it was implemented on the FR-S/BRZ. However you'll note that Subaru had to resort to just direct injection alone on their own new cars, so those engines will experience the same carbon build up as everyone else. The FR-S/BRZ has D-4S and therefore will not." Might have changed in newer generations but as far as I know its still made the same way.
If only I was short enough to drive this, my dream car for years now :'( 6'6" life sigh not the best height for a car guy.... especially a broke car guy
If you swap the motor you're gonna fudge the center of gravity, and that's a big part of why it drives the way it does. I have a '17 w PP and I'm looking at superchargers. Like the vid! Keep up the good work!!
it tends to age well similar to the Miata. some locals in my area swap the 2.0 with a turbo 2.5 from earlier STI (half chopped and imported from Japan) then hook them with a Haltech mgmt unit.
The engine failure was due to Toyota techs not having the training to effectively use the gasket sealer when reassembling the engine. Excess gasket made its way into the oil pickup and the cars lost oil pressure.
And I'm glad I got the B, and took it to my B dealer for the springs. Now with 23k on that recall I would assume they did their jobs perfectly. And got a free new fuel rail out of that since they somehow managed to crack it while removing the block.
I love the vex, always had. And I really like that they didn’t change it too much so when you buy a used you are getting almost the same stuff and it doesn’t look aged.

If this came with more horesepower, the it defeats its purpose of being an affordable sports car.

Its named after a fking corolla
Peak power isn't my only issue with this car, it's the torque dip from 3,250-4,500 right in the meat of the power band. Having driven most iterations of the Miata (NA, NB & ND) and Mustang (most everything from the 60's to current, save the new GT350), either are better options. I currently drive a (mildly modified) 2006 WRX wagon that destroys a BRZ in every aspect of driving except for driftability in the dry, in the rain and snow my WRX out drifts a BRZ. All of that stated, I know people that have and love BRZs/86s, it's just not the right option for me.

A Subaru BRZ truly is a budget Porsche 911. If you want more power look at the Nissan 370Z it is awesome too.
Joolz1982 right?! It’s very strange. I’m not sure if @thestraightpipes have ever attempted to contact any insurance companies for theoretical quotes for each car they do, similar to the Continental recommenced tires, but I think it would be interesting! :)

Jon Dagata apparently quite rare valve springs do break, but think if they break could be dangerous and a lot to repair, if not taken for recall before.
@@Joolz1982 the dealership wanted to charge me labor to take off my aftermarket turbo kit and parts. Subaru should put in the new 2.4 turbo from the ascent and outback. 260 HP and 277 lb ft of torque at 2000 rpm would be great!

Toyota replaced my engine in my FRS after my engine blew from the recall.
The FR-S/BRZ has D-4S and therefore will not."
