  • Joe Jackson performs Steppin' Out solo, Sydney State Theatre, 20/9/91, on 'Laughter and Lust' tour. Saw this tour in Melbourne - it was fantastic musician ship. This was the first song of the show - after this his band slowly drifts out.

Thanks for uploading this. I was the director and shared the editing with my assistant because of deadlines, and we nailed it on time. Joe was a really pleasant guy to work for, even with a really tight budget. He was a no frills person regarding production. He didn't want the massive light-shows etc and with music like his, it wasn't necessary. Cheers for the upload, it was great watching this again.

Maurice Todman - thank you so much for commenting. This was a really wonderful show - I’ve watched it again and again. I really appreciate the way that you let the musicians take centre stage - I would rather admire a great rhythm section than a light show and go go dancers.

PS any chance you could persuade Joe to upload a high quality version instead of this VHS transfer? 😀

Wonderful concert so glad you booked a second one in Sydney we couldn't get tickets for the first one. Good memories & loved Deborah Conway who performed as well. It was my first date with my now Hubby(still in love). Just been listening again with Hubby. It was a great venue, love the State Theatre.

I have read in many comments on the videos of the Great JJ (that's what I call him) that he is one of the most underrated musicians. Why is that?
In the 80s and 90s radio stations dictated the laws of promotion. The internet came to democratise and put everyone on an equal footing.
Joe Jackson was outlawed on the radio. He was always too unpredictable and gifted for the insecure disc-jockeys. His overly caustic lyrics put many broadcasters at a distance.
Such is the life of a genius. Perhaps in 20 years, a new vintage wave will do justice to this tremendous musician.

Joe showed what a true, blue-blooded musician he is in this version. The original version is the pop version for the masses. This one has soul.

Thanks for uploading this. Bought back some great memories. I was actually at this concert and was aware it was being recorded. I searched and voila!!. Great musician and singer. Entertaining. I did detect a slight perfectionist streak when an audience member got up onto the stage and started dancing with him during ? "Is she really going out with him ". Maybe that's the reason it's not included here. He basically finished the song and said " OK because that f**cker got up and danced with me we're going to do that whole song again". At which point the aussie audience " bugger off". Very amusing but probably not for the production team.

typing deep feelings of this album and the courtship of my wife...getting deep and the song changes and the heartfelt words disappear right in front of my eyes... so now I've got a minute to say how you've touched our lives.... Thank you. the first version was better, hope you get the drift. Lawson di Ransom Canyon

The thing about a great song is that it should still have quality if you strip it down to the blueprint/barebones like Breaking Us in Two. I've always loved his songwriting. He's inspired me to write.

Try stripping down any of the so called modern pop songs like Nicki Minaj and shit like that - you'll get literally nothing at all...

True! My fist date with this girl, and told her we would be going to Joe Jackson, with a quick pause she ask straight away what is a Joe Jackson? Now at this point I'm thinking two things, this should still work and what a waste of ticket front row, right center between Joe and Mindy ( love u, I here it's a great band ) she was just about crying after this opening song! SDSU, I think they had some time, and they were off to this show. Well Thanks Joe and Band some 28-29 years later she and I have been married needless to say, a good start to everything and our song !

hate that he looks back shamefully on his original version of this iconic 80s song and has never played it again. these lounge renditions are a different song IMO
