    Charles Bronson was about 46-47 when he played Harmonica. This is a nice touch for a couple of reasons - the boy in the flashbacks looks about 16-17, so it figures into his life-long quest for revenge. Secondly, Bronson had an amazing physique for a man of this age, which he attributed to the manual labour jobs throughout his life.

    Henry Fonda initially refused to play this acting part as he was 63 years of age, and felt he was too old for the part, well he proved himself wrong, he was perfect for the part. He also said in that interview that he was dismayed at the part he had to play where he was the gang leader and butchered the family in the beginning of the movie. He said that it was very disturbing to him even if it was only acting...

      Spaghettis breathed new life into the Western. That genre was long dead in Hollywood before A Fistful Of Dollars - even John Wayne had moved on, and by that time it was all about spy movies, thanks to Bond.

    Did anyone notice the big tactical error in the movie's opening gunfight (5:14)? Granted, they didn't know they were going to engage in a gunfight, so they didn't exactly know to prepare for it. But all three of the bad guys standing so close to each other made them an easy target for a practiced gunslinger like Harmonica Man.

    • @Daneelro
      @Daneelro 9 місяців тому +5

      In the lead up not shown in this clip, you see how that situation arose: originally, they took up good positions, but no one got off on the station side of the arrived train, so they thought that's it and walked to their horses.

    I cannot but repeat myself, the scene where Harmonica meets the three men waiting for him to kill has a bad editing here. In Hungary in the version that I saw there was a cut at 6:53 to the gun of Jill's husband as he shoots birds. In this way the audience did not know what's happened to Harmonica until we see him in the saloon again. A much better editing than the one here.

    • @loge10
      @loge10 Рік тому +2

      I don't agree. I also think this editing was Leon's intent. There was some hacking at the movie over the years and it's only recently been reconstructed as it was originally released. The section you talk about may have been part of that hacking and recent reconstruction. I don't think this movie needs that kind of forced suspense. It's not that kind of movie.

    • @Daneelro
      @Daneelro 9 місяців тому

      The edit you mention is actually a cut-down TV edit. The scene as you see it is how it was shown across European cinemas, including in Hungary; and _sometimes_ also on TV, also in Hungary. (An even more heavily cut-down version was shown in US cinemas.)
      One may argue about this particular editing choice (I'm for this version because it shows Harmonica as less of a perfect hero than The Man With No Name), but most of the other stuff that was cut made the movie less easy to understand.
      You might be interested to know that there are a couple of scenes that were cut from all theatrical or TV versions of the film, including the next involving Harmonica after this: injured, he wanders into town, where he is beaten up by a couple of thugs. You see his wounds from that in the next few scenes, like the roadhouse one.

    • @fitless
      @fitless 3 місяці тому

      I prefer the cut I have described above. Harmonica will not look perfect to the viewer as Cheyenne shows the wound Harmonica gets at the station in the saloon scene if you remember. Also, for a stronger dramatic effect it is better to see the family on preparing for Jill's visit then showing Harmonica's getting up after the shootout here at the station.
