Hoarding is a mental illness. I'm not excusing it nor is that babying the person but no mentally stable person would see towers of trash and just shrug it off and keep going. A traumatic event or events kickstarts it, depression masks the person from noticing it and then...things snowball. And when you decide to just throw everything away, you're throwing away the person's safety net and comfort from that trauma. One good way to handle it is to bring out loads of items from the house and try to get the person to only keep a few things and have them let go of the rest. That alone can be hard, they're going to resist and want to still keep everything. You have to kindly remind them that that's just not possible. There's going to be frustration and tears. There may even be a point where the person says "Fine, just throw it all away!" Don't do it. I'm sure the person understands the bare concept that the hoarding is bad but if you just throw it all away, it's going to create resentment, resentment creates more hoarding later. It's a lot. It's not easy. Each hoarder is different, some can let go of things easier than others but it's not something that can be changed in a day, a week, or a month. At least, not the mental part of it. And most importantly, for what was lost, there needs to be something to fill the gap, which is where family and friends are going to be important. As it's an illness, the person will need to be frequently checked on and someone to help nip it in the bud if the hoarding (almost inevitably) begins again.

People are being too harsh on the son. I think he's had enough, really, he's had it. This hoarding hasn't been going on for a few months or a year, this level takes years and he's watched his family deteriorate because of it.
It’s hard for children of hoarders. Society still thinks it’s just a matter of stepping in and cleaning up for them. It doesn’t work like that. My mom was a hoarder. I would throw things away, she’d fish them out of the trash. We had tug of wars over items. Hoarding is very hard to cure and it’s frustrating for the family.
in the episode the son explained that this hoarding has been going on since he was a tween. he left his moms house at 16 because of this. The only reason why he's there is mainly to help his sister who's a little person and even stated that if his mom get evicted jessica(the sister who's a little person) can come live with him.
Simp detected. The simp police are here to charge you a fine for giving a young woman your attention for free. A surcharge will be applied for boosting her ego and another for doing it on the internet. Go outside brother and stop enabling spoiled princess syndrome while simultaneously growing a pair. Win win.
This is the first time I’ve seen someone voice such a natural view point on a show like this. Not saying whether it’s wrong or right but the way the son showed how he felt was perfectly normal human behaviour.
I feel so bad for Jessica. When Roy didn’t really want to help, you could tell she broke down, like a last cry for help, last resort, last mental support. She’s stuck with her mom literally, it must be horrible living in conditions like that.
viciouslady yes they can that is what adult social services is for. To protect adults who can’t protect themselves or make wise choices. Similar to the elder abuse offices.
We had a tenant that was this bad. It took 3 months after he gave us his 30 days to clean up. We finally had to get a dumpster tell him to throw shit away and had to completely rebuild the inside of the house. He argued with my husband about a box of rocks.
I guess I’m the only one that’s PISSED that there’s two dogs in that house. The second I walked in, I would’ve removed the animals and said she could have them back once the house is cleaned and maintained for at least two months. Then I would be doing visits monthly to check the condition of the home and if it started to get even remotely messy again, the animals would be coming with me. Animal cruelty/abuse is a FELONY!!!
I don't think Roy resents his mom because of her hoarding I think she causes him alot of frustration and anxiety and he's natural reaction is to feel anger this woman lives in complete denial and they should call animal services to get her dog out of that dangerous house and she is a terrible roll model to her daughter.
he seems like a lovely guy who can put his foot down, but is there really anything that can be done with a woman who says "im sorry you feel that way"?
Everytime I see a hoarding situation… I keep wondering “How did this happen “ & “why did it get this far”. Her daughter is a little person & she doesn’t need to be in that type of environment
In the show hoarders there was an episode with a person who owned multiple cats. A lot of them were deathly sick. And they found a couple of them who passed. Some of them were just little babies 😞😟
props for the son for getting away from the mess, he probably did all the things you could do to help them but just had enough. if you wanna grow, let go of people who are holding u back
“I have a hard time sugar coating things” So don’t. Sometimes it’s appropriate to be harsh. Sometimes it’s the only way to get people to wake up & realize wtf is going on. They may not understand why in the moment but afterwards the person will understand it was out of concern.
I come from a family of hoarders, not extreme like this. Now in my own place I’m a minimalist & very clean. If I don’t need something I get rid of it. I love that my house looks like a decor magazine, everything has a place, nothing is out of order
That’s what I said, something on the inside needs to be fixed as well so she won’t do this again. Unfortunately the older you are the more stuck in your ways you become, it will be hard to change her mindset at this point.
@@mariposapoder9734 and the longer you have and continue to do the same thing over and over, the harder it is to break the habit. Aurelius Marcus No, its not, although by this point its a vicious circle: the mess feeds the depression and the depression maintains the mess. But a mentally healthy person would never get to that level of mess in their house. Only severe depression can make someone neglect their environment to this extend.
THE exact same situation with my wife's detached grandmother. A very long and unfortunate story short, we got to the point that she evicted us from our house that she gave to us, (no joke whatsoever) and she started filling our house. Dolls, trash, crates and crates. She now owns 2 houses, a storage locker and 4 sheds. Each property if over 2100ftsq. All full. She had a very toxic personality constantly trying to set each member of our family against one another, she would always swear blind she didn't, as she'd sit on her mobile complaining. She constantly abused her power of owning the house making us and my wife's siblings fech her food, items, meds, anything; but always with an excuse for her to not leave the house. After she got taken to the hospital twice in one week, 2 solid mental break downs, she lied to the nurses, we had no say, she came back and blamed us. We got evicted by her. She threatened us. She accused us. She now lives completely alone. Mostly in anger. Since she has called our relatives several times, acusing us of stealing both money, her valuables and her properties (she ligit said we stole a 20ftx20ft garage. We drive a sedan and currently live in a 20ftx10ft small house. We wish we had the better.) Unfortunately that situation can consume lives, and a dominating personality, when amplified will weak havoc in its wake. In our case we're still dealing with the fallout. Be careful out there. Be safe

People are being too harsh on the son. I think he's had enough, really, he's had it. This hoarding hasn't been going on for a few months or a year, this level takes years and he's watched his family deteriorate because of it.
And I think he is worried about his sister that lives in that dangerous caos
It’s hard for children of hoarders. Society still thinks it’s just a matter of stepping in and cleaning up for them. It doesn’t work like that. My mom was a hoarder. Her depression needs to be fixed first and foremost, otherwise it will keep repeating.
Her depression may have started prior to this, but a lot of it is likely due now to how she's living.
I have a hard time understanding why they don't allow others to remove and junk everything and start with a clean slate -- ESPECIALLY, the ones who have nice and rats defecating on virtually everything inside their homes.
It's the other way around. Fixing the house will fix the depression.
Aurelius Marcus No, its not, although by this point its a vicious circle: the mess feeds the depression and the depression maintains the mess. But a mentally healthy person would never get to that level of mess in their house. Only severe depression can make someone neglect their environment to this extend.
"he was extremely angry" and he was right ma'am
We wish we had the better.)
Unfortunately that situation can consume lives, and a dominating personality, when amplified will weak havoc in its wake. In our case we're still dealing with the fallout.
Be careful out there. Be safe
