For the kids in the first story, you have a mother and a father. You have a roof over your head and food in the fridge. You are driven to school, not in a car as fancy as others but it works. You were not abandoned or abused. You have a father that cares and fixes your lunch every day. What else do you want!???! I wish I had half of that when I was your age!

More and more people might face a tough time in retirement. Low-paying jobs, inflation, and high rents make it hard to save. Now, middle-class Americans find it tough to own a home too, leaving them without a place to retire.

This is precisely why I like having a portfolio coach guide my day-to-day market decisions: with their extensive knowledge of going long and short at the same time, using risk for its asymmetrical upside and laying it off as a hedge against the inevitable downward turns, their skillset makes it nearly impossible for them to underperform. I've been utilizing a portfolio coach for more than two years, and I've made over $800,000.

I learned daddy wasn't going cause he needed to work that day, mom said he had to go cause we needed money, I told her I wasn't going to the party anymore, I put on regular clothes and went to work with dad and participated on whatever I could, I could tell in his face he was so happy and felt so appreciated. But they’re just feeling sorry for what they have lost. I grew up in England after the WW2, we were seven kids in our family, I was four years old, when it ended, my father used to say to us ‘You’re alive! Think lucky’. Poor Bob. He shouldn’t be so hard on himself, just turn his kids into survival mode. ps. My Dad grew most of our food, all organic in those days. We had to paint the chicken house.😂. Save on electricity by not putting up xmas lights. Have the kids refill their water bottles at the drinking fountain and take reusable bags for lunch. Rent a house without a finished basement, that's cheaper. There's a lot of money being spent that's totally unnecessary! And the kids keeping up appearances? F-that! They can catch a bus to a local public school to save on gas and get over it. I know that's harsh...but families should work together and support one another. Why is this all on Bob???

I've noticed that people who never had to struggle don't handle financial, job and or health declines well. The coping skills haven't been developed. Poorer people seem always in survival mode and plan multiple ways to combat hardships . The upper middle-class and higher keep looking for their cheese refusing to believe it is gone. If their self worth is tied to their social standing or "image" they refuse to save themselves early on by ditching The "status symbols, expensive homes, materials and debt." Humility and common sense seems harder to attain the wealthier one becomes.

This same situation happened to my own family when me and my brother were in our teens. We had to get out there and find whatever job was available and contribute to the family. It is not! And agreed, should not! This is the problem with us Americans our version of poverty is still so rich. I saw her cooking with butter. They are well fed. Their “modest house” is a gorgeous home. If no one has a job why not live somewhere that is more affordable? Somewhere where there will be work, and the cost of living is low. Plenty of places in america. There are even towns giving away plots of land to get people to live there! We have done so many disservice with our corporate view of food and home. The wife said, “when does the good stuff come?” The good stuff happened... the good stuff was an idol... and maybe this is their time to realize what is the real good stuff! Love. Family... so sad to see so many squander so many good gifts.

The United States Congress and State governments need to enforce the age discrimination laws they choose
to ignore. It is against the law to discriminate against older people but it happens frequently. Most older people who get laid off, whether in personal or in-mass layoffs, have difficulty getting another job because, if they are over 40, they're considered old by today's employers' and corporations' standards. Loss of homes, unemployment benefits that run out, and homelessness follows. Even worse, older people are forced to take early Social Security at age 62 instead of waiting until 66. When they have no choice but to take early monthly SS checks, they lose at least 25% of SS income for as long as they live. Women, living on SS, are probably the highest numbers living in poverty in the USA. For many decades, businesses have been disloyal when they discriminated against competent, loyal employees in favor of employing younger, less costly and skilled workers. This scenario continues against older workers today. I pray our government will help the elderly who became poor due to being shut out of decent employment opportunities and suffer this terrible loss of SS benefits they were entitled to previously.

I hate to sound nasty and bitter, but the greed in this country is just ridiculous and the people are sooooo out of touch with reality. When they HAD money….nothing or nobody suffering seemed to affect them….they had their rich little bubble.
      So…..I have no sympathy……..
I know another rich family this happened to…..they couldn’t get any help….the rich wanted nothing to do with them now that they were poor….and the poor didn’t like them because how they turned their noses up at them when they had their money. Again…..I had NO sympathy!
My poor friends and I have, on our own, with no money, fed a huge group of the local houseless and poor, ……clothed them, gave them basic necessities, kept them with blankets and tents in the winter, etc….for over 40 years…..AND NOT ONCE DID WE EVER SEE A CHURCH GROUP OR ANY RICH PEOPLE COME FEED OR HELP THEM….😞😡 (but now that they lost everything…..they want help) 😡
I say Welcome to the life MOST Americans live…..you know….the “little people” you gave no consideration to when you had money!

Why is the Wife and her family blaming the Dad. He lost his job , he wasn’t fired and he’s trying his best to do what he can. So the wife loves him when he can provide and when he can’t, then turns her back on him. This guy loves his children and I hope the children realize how lucky they are to have a father like him , who would do anything to support his children. BTW why doesn’t the wife work , and his teenage kids should work too.

I feel for him but the key is to always live below your means. They did not have to live in the first neighborhood. The job incentivised it but it wasnt mandatory. He created spoiled kids and a spoiled wife by thinking that his whole self worth as a man was to have money and throw it at his family. Had he lived modestly despite his paycheck and saved the excess that he was wasting hed be in a better situation.
But you can see the pain in his eyes and it is absolutely heartbreaking. I hope it gets better for him.

I finally got a new (to me car) after driving my other one for 20+ years. I got it cheap on a neighborhood listserv, when the daughter of the seller (a college student) needed a better car. I will take that car gladly, due to low mileage and cheap maintenance and big enough space to be able to live out of the car (if ever necessary). Yes, I always assume paychecks will stop and so I buy my cars with the thought in mind, can I sleep in it with my dog and have space to my essentials. Growing up as poor as I did, I never assume there is money to buy groceries.

You HAVE a place in heaven. your 'worth' as a father and a husband doesn't even go down a bit in my eyes. You are a wonderful person, even without that ton of cash you could haul with an 'executive' job. Being a janitor, though being sadly underpaid, is an important job. Not that 8 years vs. 10 years is much of a difference but if you want to persuade people to change their minds and be better you have to be 100% accurate or else they’ll think the real things you’re saying are also not true.
