I was sitting in a garage in Bolinas when Jim walked up and asked if he could read a poem while we played. We did not like him. His very first poem that day was Catholic Boy, and the Jim Carroll Band was born. I was with Jim that first night at the Mabuhay when he pulled it off, and a star was born. Jim, I miss you more than all the others, and I salute you brother! BRAD from BOLINAS. :)
Great story. For decades I though his band was a bunch of hard core New Yorkers... then I found out he lived in Bolinas and the band came from there. KILLER BAND. As they say in Hollywood "God made it click." Once when I was a young kid, I hitchhiked through that area. Ended up at a band/dance/party in Bolinas, seemed like EVERYONE in town was there. Nobody in Sacto had any weed at all, Nixon had closed off the border. But they had it in Bolinas. Lovely experience. Lovely times in some ways. Had a very good friend who tended bar at Mabuhay, Allen Murdock was his name. Very good friend of mine... he died.
Jim Carrol was one of the most underrated artists of the time and I hope in the centuries to come people and aliens can get up and dance to his art... I feel sad because I never knew Jim passed away:{ He was the real deal... One more friend...that died...
I didn't know Jim had passed away either until I came across this video. As far as I knew these last ten years he was alive as a poet and songwriter and as someone who's story about their own addiction helped make me realize I needed to get off of heroin myself if I ever planned on being alive again.I can now announce that I'm happily sober for almost five years and successfully living one day at a time......Thank you Jim Carroll, may you rest in peace and always be remembered well and in the light of the bright sunshine............
+lasquaw666 Good luck in your detox. stay strong and don't rush the detox. Take as much time as you need and you will succeed. I 've been on Methadone for 40 years and I am trying to detox again. Now that they have computerized dispensing, the clinic can detox me one milligram at a time. It will take two years to detox, but I hope to avoid all the suffering I experienced every other time I tried the old 10 mg at a time method.
