There will never be anyone who performs this song better than the late, wonderfully talented, Jim Carroll and the musicians who made up The Jim Carroll Band. Why? Because it was a song written by Jim about the friends he had lost, through death, when they were very young. When he sang it, Jim was able to evoke the feelings that he had about their premature deaths. I'm obviously a huge fan of Jim Carroll and not solely as a musician. ~ Having said all of the above, this cover is *the* best one I have ever heard and undoubtedly the best one I will ever hear. With the softening and quieting of his voice, Johnny Depp manages to share the story in a much more upbeat (not the exact word I should be using) but still somber manner. With the whole band singing the chorus, it almost echoes Jim's loud and almost brash presentation of the song. ~ There is some wikkid guitar playing by all who were playing guitars, but I especially loved the parts where Johnny and Joe are riffing together. Although a "punk" song w/ the DIY and grittiness embodied in Jim's original, the extremely talented, extremely proficient lads are able to keep that intact. But, there's the addition of something more that I believe only these long-time professionals could bring to the table. The original was extremely successful for The Jim Carroll Band and defined Jim's musical career, period. Again, while keeping the original vibe intact, they've managed to make the song more commercial and even something you could dance to. The song, in their very capable hands and w/ Johnny's voice transcends the punk genre. ~ It's not a Reznor/Cash/Hurt moment but they certainly did their own fantastic take on the song while having total, utter respect for the original. I believe Jim is certainly smiling down upon them w/ his blessing. Thank-you to The Hollywood Vampires! 🖤
When they played this live in Swansea pictures of artists who we've lost over the years were displayed on the screen. When Dimebag Darrell, Freddie Mercury and Cobain popped up the crowd erupted in applause and cheers
