dude this is great. easy way to start learning how to do them. and you added bonuses on the night to day shot. ive wanted to learn that for ever! if you get a chance can you do a full walk through one of these days on sight for timelapses i still have trouble fully understanding how to shoot them. the middle part you skipped with the exposures
The LR-timelapse software makes it even better though. Smoothing out the lighting. Just change exposure when it's at 1 stop wrong exposure (or even smaller increments) when shooting and smooth it out using the raw data (done automatically with LR-timelapse).
Christoffer Lund a third of a stop is ideal, one stop can give highlight flickering that is not fixable. Lrtimelapse will be covered in another tutorial :)
Yeah I see most recommend 0.3 stops. Guess it depends on what landscape you're shooting and what camera (dynamic range wise) you have. I see some people do 1 stop increments, and it can be pushing it to the limit, but it does work. Also since LrTimelapse has a de-flickering tool that makes it a little bit safer, but you know all this. Glad you'll be making a video on it too. I'm just starting to get good at timelapses myself and it's really fun. You're definitely one of the big inspirations! Also I just want to say keep making these amazing vids (both timelapses and vlogs). You put out fantastic stuff and I like that a lot of the funny blooper-stuff doesn't get edited out. And as a final note I'm noticing that trying to shoot timelapses *really* tests your patience. Gotta plan ahead so you can do something while waiting because it does take a while.
I am using a sort of similar method. Using the ProShot app on my phone I take a sequence of photos using P mode (shutter speed on auto and aperture is fixed by default). Stitching is pretty much explained here so... skip It's all one video in my case so I put it a few times on the timeline in different layers with these settings: Top layer: 20% opacity, start time 00:00:04 4-th layer: 25% opacity, start time 00:00:03 3-rd layer: 33% opacity, start time 00:00:02 2-nd layer: 50% opacity, start time 00:00:01 Bottom layer: 100% opacity, start time 00:00:00 By start time it's implied that every upper layer starts 1 frame after the layer beneath it. Opacity just gets smaller if you use more layers (with 20 layers you can get to 5% pretty much) It imitates long exposure and the flickering is pretty much gone.
I need the " matrix " style of learning ..... sit back, plug in and download knowledge straight to brain, everything else happens a bit fast for me ! But I will achieve a holy grail one day. Cheers Matt great channel, just need more vlogging mate ✌🏻👍🏻😉
Cool bonus content, nice simple method, I don't think the sony mirthless cameras have that handy folder creation option, couldn't find it on my a7s. All good.
Thanks for this Matt. I'm gonna have a go at this method for sure but I'm gonna try it on my go pro. How can I judge when to stop and adjust for exposure etc etc. I guess trial and error and just judging when the photos are just too dark. Tips ??
+Rob Pullen yup bit of trial and error is best, that way you really learn how these scenes work. Not sure if you can look at your photos while rolling on a gopro to review the exposure so you might have to stop the sequence when you think it's too dark
Interesting! I've never seen this method before, it seems really complicated. You should check out an App called qDSLR Dashboard, it allows you to control and automate holy grail time lapses, edit with LR Timelapse and Lightroom and it makes this process so much easier! Also, I would never recommend over-exposing your shots as you lose detail in the highlights and always shoot in RAW for better results. Apart from that some good tips!
Ofcourse shooting raw and using LRT is way better and gives you more control but that wasn't the point of this video. This method is for people who have little knowledge and want to shoot it in a really easy way :)
You don't have to stop your Timelapse if you use a Genie 2 You can change your settings anytime you want. I just watched another Timelapse Video that states the Opposite to you , it Recommends under exposing by 1-2 stops. It is always better to under expose i would of thought , especially with bright Light Blowing out your shot like a Sunrise. So which is better to Adjust , the Shutter or the i.s.o ?
The point of over exposing is so you don't have to adjust settings while the sun is going under in your frame, as you will notice flickering in the highlights due to changing the settings. Multiple methods work, this is one of them.
Hello mathew sir,I’m getting confused for day to night timelapse setting. Here your camera is on M mode but in another video you told to select AV mode + iso auto + focus manual. Can you please share the camera setting here ? Thank you so much sir
This is an insane method. Why not use an automatic shutter speed? Stopping the rhythm of the timelapse while touching your camera just to switch folders... so risky and weird
Matthew, Can I ask you if you have tried he Alpine Labs Pulse intervalometer, which claims to have an exposure ramping feature for Holy Grail timelapse? If you did what was your opinion of it?
I havent tried it yet, but most are those are marketed as intelligent yet have no idea of the surrounding light. I have a Foolography smart remote thing that claims something similar but haven't tested it yet
I'm keen to get it myself, even though it misses a good holy grail mode to shoot sunset/sunrise, it's still a great camera that I could use for a lot of other things too
is it bad to use a variable nd filter for photo time-lapse , not video time-lapse ??? And why does variable ND Filters cause vignetting and how can i get rid of the vignetting????
Do you have any tips for lag in Premiere? Content uploads fine, original files play smoothly, but the second I begin assembling and editing, I go to review the edited footage and there's terrible lag. Only with video, no problems with audio. This makes it pretty difficult to see if I've stabilized a clip well enough, or if there are exposure issues with my time lapses. Anyone else have this issue?
It looks strange. Why didn't you use LRTimelapse? But the most strange: you lower the opacity of the video it is ok, mut why you make a keyframe not on the last frame, sou you're missing your frames
because the end of some of the timelapse clips gets too dark which results in exposure pumping. If you overshoot you have more room to play with in post and get it exactly right. I didn't use LRTimelapse because that would defeat the purpose of this exact video, to use cheap and easy software.
LRTimelapse is not necessary to get rid of flicker in a timelapse - it works well but you can also get rid of flicker without it. There are video FX plugins that do the same thing.
How come your videos don't flicker? I have all my settings on manual (I even half rotate my lens sometimes) but it still flickers. Please help. Thanks.
Matthew Vandeputte thank you for the swift response. Do you how how I can stop lens flicker if I set everything to manual and even twist my lens so it’s disengaged?
The developer of that software quit his job, lrtimelapse is how he makes money. If people steal his software he makes less money and the software in turn will develop slower. Please consider doing the right thing and supporting independent developers.
i respect his work and his software, but the price is too much for a guy living in 3rd world country like me! i think he still get decent income every month, pirating just affect a very small percent of his LRT development
Matthew, my personal opinion...maybe a very good process, but the way you teach is awful, you speak so fast, you move on screen so fast, maybe you want to show a flashing edited video to us....but is not the moment for that, maybe making a Tv spot,....instead, please take into consideration for beginners is not a good point, for the people who maybe want to follow you is not so pleasant...you never zoom in into the little windows inside your screen, only in the timeline, so is difficult to see while you run what kind of option do we have to click or mark. Please take my comment in a positive way, the technique is amazing but always remember, you are mainly teaching and not showing your fast skills dealing with the technique or the process, so in my case, the way you move and speak in the video made me forget the attention at the process itselfs (and I think I´m not the only want, because you have another comment about the same below) so please, keep going, you are doing an amazing job and for us we appreciate too much you share it, but please, for the next video, taking 2 pills for relaxing will be amazing....Best Regards
Holy grail? I think not bud! had to thumb down for that!! ..can't shoot timelapse of moving objects? ..multiple timelapses overlapping? wtf! this is a MacGyver way to build a timelapse IMO
It’s not an easy. It appeared more complicated for me. Definitely it’s not for beginners. It’s not a cheap video. All your gear are expensive.it showed more skill on adobe photoshop. Also you were going in jet speed. Not for me.
I've been waiting for this tutorial from you for a really long time.
Thank you for being patient, I hope you like it!

@@riricky815 he said a cheap way to do it. LR timelapse is like 300 dollars for the software.
You put so much information under this video. Great work brother. Keep it up
glad you like it

enjoyed it Matt .. looking forward to trying it out

Wow, nice. I have been using A mode for these, and then use After Effects to balance the exposure. But this a great. Will go try it this weekend.
Got a new one coming soon! Also doing an Av mode tutorial
Matthew Vandeputte will look forward to it. Goldenhour app says it will be perfect conditions, so ample oppertunity
Thank you.

Thank you so much for the tutorial. Please do more!
Awesome video! Do you think this would work for night to day timelapses?
Always an amusing tutorial matt! 😂
Great tutorial and 5:48 great taste in music too!
Mind blown!!!
has it healed?
This was cool but I’d love to see the one you actually use. Like maybe with LT timelapse or a bramping method?
+Colmkeating15 we'll get there eventually
awesome! cant wait
What? Photoshop and cheap in the same sentence. Awesome video
thanks 👏🏻
Great stuff Matt, as usual!

Gaurav Bajaj completely different way of shooting. There are multiple ways to do it, I only explain one in every video.
Matthew Vandeputte sir can you give me one setting to shoot day to night ?
This is an insane method. Why not use an automatic shutter speed? Stopping the rhythm of the timelapse while touching your camera just to switch folders... so risky and weird
I just shot a timelapse using this method, how would you go about editing the separate sequences so that they still flow into each other?
Matthew, Can I ask you if you have tried he Alpine Labs Pulse intervalometer, which claims to have an exposure ramping feature for Holy Grail timelapse? If you did what was your opinion of it?
I havent tried it yet, but most are those are marketed as intelligent yet have no idea of the surrounding light. I have a Foolography smart remote thing that claims something similar but haven't tested it yet

Matthew Vandeputte Perhaps you can suggest to your contacts at Canon to add it in a firmware update?
Believe me, I've tried.
How do you open RAWs as image sequence? The check box is greyed out for me.
make sure they are all sequential and that there is no gap in the sequence, that could be the issue
Yup, they're all sequential and have no gap.
Converting them to jpeg/tiff/other formats brings back the checkbox somehow.

Li Eric lens flicker or you add too much clarity to the sequence afterwards which can also cause flickering.

Sometimes if you add a lot of edits to the images they can flicker due to adjustments being placed locally instead of globally across the image
