Tried to create a time lapse of comet ZTF using 60 tiffs. Added the sequence of files and adjusted exposure, curves, image size, etc just like you did. Went to export/render the video but it did not give me any options for a video format (e.g., QuickTime or mp4). Just jpeg, png, etc. I noticed the workspace had 0 of 0 files as well. Not sure why this happened.

One question - maybe I missed something (I checked it in your video several times?) - how can I render before an export? Hi Pat, Sorry for the confusion. It is not necessary to render before export. To render the timeline to watch it play back smoothly inside photoshop, simply click the play button and wait for it to render each frame. When it is complete it will start looping the timelapse at the desired speed. Hope that makes sense, Nico
Great tutorial. Was easy to follow and I created my first time lapse with Casseopeia and Andromeda which I was very happy with...it ended up only 4 secs but I loved it for my first try!

Hi Nico! Great tutorial! When I export and click render video, it takes forever and I just see that spinning circle. Even after 20 minutes it’s still doing that. Have you seen that issue before?
Can frames be edited halfway through…for example to bring out the pink strip in your video with masks and whatnot, then revert back? That would be waaaay cheaper and better than LrTimelapse

I'm not sure, but if you are sharing it on social media, there should be a way to just crop in to make it vertical right in the app (getting rid of the black bars).

Leading up to the 2024 eclipse, I am planning a series of videos to get ready. Yes, a solar filter is very helpful. You don't need it for totality, but you want to be focused and centered on the sun before totality and you'll need the filter for the partial phase. I suggest Baader astrosolar film to make a safe filter cheaply.

Yes, correct. And rendering is only necessary if you want smooth playback to preview the timelapse in Photoshop. You can also just skip straight to exporting the video if you don't need a preview first.

Nico help! 😁 this is a great guide and I have everything ready, but when I get to photoshop and have the video loaded, it has a red question mark on the video and doesn’t seem to recognise it? I’ve tried it as tiff and jpeg. With and without edits, different file sizes… I can’t see I’m doing anything wrong 🤦♂️
I can also do time lapse videos directly in On1 Photo RAW. I'll have to do some time lapse aurora as I live above the arctic circle, I've done lots of still aurora shots, but have yet to do any time lapse videos.
Hi Nico, thanks for the great video - I've done a test run of the tutorial steps - but I'm stuck! I can't seem to get a .mp4 option when exporting and video playback controls are not available. My layer within the Video Group also has a "?" over the film icon... so I'm guessing I've done something wrong. Turning the layer into a smart object doesn't seem to have any impact. Any suggestions? Photoshop 2022, 60 frames, exposure 8 sec, at 10 sec intervals. Mark
Hi Mark, any chance you moved or deleted the 60 photos after opening them into Photoshop as an image sequence? I believe with an image sequence Photoshop needs all the original file paths to remain static. That's my first guess. Nico
@@NebulaPhotos I have the same issue. This looks like an issue for M1 Macs - I found several posts online stating that this feature along with several others isn't currently available on Photoshop running natively on the M1 Macs.
Nico... Do you or any of your viewers know of any companies in the USA that can Full Spectrum modify a Sony A7Rii camera? Spencer's in Utah is saying that the A7R series cameras have an IR light leak if you modify them. Other Sony cameras don't seem to have that problem.
Great video! I find I have noise fluctuations between frames that is making the video flicker, any ideas? I imaged at 800 iso, so maybe that needs to be increased to get more data on the pixels.
Make sure everything is Manual including Aperture, White balance, ISO, shutter speed, etc. And yes, going a bit longer/brighter than you normally would is a good idea. If you still have flicker, check out LRTimelapse for a dedicated tool that has some 'deflicker' options.
sometimes the mechanical aperture does not close to 100% the exact same size for every image. This results in slightly different exposures. And old school trick is to take a photo with long exposure (or BULB) with the correct aperture setting and then turn the lense just a tiny bit to disconnect the electrical contacts of the lense mount. Now the aperture should not open up and can stay where it was set the whole night ;)
As continuous as possible, but a 1 or 2 second gap between photos is fine too. The most important thing to get smooth motion is that the camera is taking photos with an even cadence. Sometimes it's better to program in a 1 second interval between photos to avoid the situation where it misses taking a photo because the previous image is still downloading. My best advice is practice on a cloudy night before the big event to be sure.
Simple is how I like it for my timelapses, did one with auroras recently and did simple edits as it moved into sunrise I did a few different tweaks in lightroom but all roughly 1,800 photos took me about 10 minutes to finish up. (edit) exporting my TIFFs took a while because I processed in lightroom and premiere not ps.
Hey Nico. Sorry to bother you with my ignorance, but does Photoshop accept/open Cannon image files? I forget what the file type is, but I know that GIMP won't open the Cannon RAW files. Thanks for your time.
Photoshop uses a helper application called Adobe Camera Raw to open the raw files. If you have an old version of Photoshop, you can convert the raw files with the free Adobe DNG converter first to get it to play nice with raw files from newer cameras.

I have the Pentax K1000, and I just don't know how to do that, seeing as how there is no stacking that you can do to improve the signal to noise ratio. why is it take a plane flying east to west and west to east the same amount of time for a certain distance, if the earth is spinning underneath the plane ? if the plane was traveling at earth rotation speed, as it was in the air that earth rotation speed would no longer be relevant. if i jump out of a plane, my velocity would change due to air resistance. is there a constant involved here ?
I have some timelaps presets for lightroom slideshow module 10fps, 15fps, 20fps, 23.97fps, 24fps, 25fps and 29.97fps. I can send them to you if you would like. you can also add audio in LR and it will match to length of time. You can also crop to 6:9 when you out put the video it allows you to choose video size as in HD ect
Any ideas on what to do when each frame has a slightly different background sky color? My widefield timeplapses look like a disco. I don't know why the camera does this.
Hi Mike, Usually that would only happen if one of the settings is on 'AUTO'. If you pick fully manual white balance, aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, it shouldn't vary much from photo to photo. If just one of those is set to auto, it can wreak havoc.
So what exactly happened between 5:09 and 5:10? You cut out the video before we could see you pull up the program. I'm using Windows 11. For me, when I double click all the selected images, it only opens 1 raw image in a photo VIEWING program. I have to right click the image, and selected Open In Photoshop; however, it won't open more than 1 photo in Adobe Photoshop
Nothing, I just cut out photoshop starting up. If you can't open a list of files from Windows Explorer into Photoshop, you can alternatively: 1. open Photoshop 2. File->Open 3. locate the list of raw files, select all (control and A), and click open. It will then open all the files into Adobe Camera Raw like you see at 5:10
@@theastrophotographerjudah9421 That's weird, I've never seen that. Do you have Adobe Bridge? I wonder if you try selecting the photos through adobe bridge and then opening them in camera raw from there it might act as a workaround to this bug you are facing.

I live in Finland and my main problem while astrophotographing has been northern lights obstructing the stars and nebulas haha! :D Where did you go when you were here?
LR time lapse version 6.0 let's you put up to 400 photos for free without licensing and is an EFFORTLESS time lapse engine. 400 photos is plenty for an astrophotography time-lapse. Also LRTIMEPAPSE let's you pick your render video options before you actually render i.e. 8K 4K 1080 720 ECT.... and let's you slow the frame rate. Also goes up to 60fps . This is all on A FREE BUILT FOR TIME-LAPSE SOFTWARE. I SUGGEST GIVING IT A TRY.
Doesn't LRTimelapse require Adobe Lightroom Classic which in turn requires the Adobe subscription unless you have an old standalone version? I looked through their website just now and that is my understanding from the installation instructions. It also seems the export resolution is limited to 1080 on the free trial.
I contacted Squarespace a few months ago for pricing and they never got back to me. It would also appear that they don't won't to talk to their customers since I've not found any contact numbers or even a support email.
Jesus. 9:55 is what you are looking for. 15 minutes of scrubbing later... most people searching for this video have already EDITED the photos. We just wanted to know how to make it a VIDEO, rather than stills.
For a Timelapse to look correct, all the photos have to be edited with the exact same adjustments. I’m not sure why you think people would have already done that step correctly. As a long time teacher, I can assure you that leaving out steps is not the way to go. It usually just leads to more confusion and wrong assumptions for the vast majority. All the tutorials on my UA-cam channel attempt to be as complete as possible for this reason.

I'm sorry, someone else in the comments alerted me this feature may be broken on M1 Macs. I was unaware of the issue. Are you using a newer Mac?

Today (22.04.2022) is the peak of the Lyrides, maybe also a good target for timelapse?

Just curious what exposure times were you shooting at for the aurora and neowise?
Aurora was 13 seconds at 14mm. I think that NEOWISE shots were only 2 seconds because I was at 85mm.
I wish someone would give instructions for storm sprite photography, high in the mesosphere.

this video did not focus on the most important part of parameters settings, like interval time, shutter speed, iso, white balance and aperture etc...
LR time lapse version 6.0 let's you put up to 400 photos for free without licensing and is an EFFORTLESS time lapse engine. 400 photos is plenty for an astrophotography time-lapse. Also LRTIMEPAPSE let's you pick your render video options before you actually render i.e. 8K 4K 1080 720 ECT.... and let's you slow the frame rate. Also goes up to 60fps . This is all on A FREE BUILT FOR TIME-LAPSE SOFTWARE. I SUGGEST GIVING IT A TRY.
Doesn't LRTimelapse require Adobe Lightroom Classic which in turn requires the Adobe subscription unless you have an old standalone version? I looked through their website just now and that is my understanding from the installation instructions. It also seems the export resolution is limited to 1080 on the free trial.
I contacted Squarespace a few months ago for pricing and they never got back to me. It would also appear that they don't won't to talk to their customers since I've not found any contact numbers or even a support email.
Jesus. 9:55 is what you are looking for. 15 minutes of scrubbing later... most people searching for this video have already EDITED the photos. We just wanted to know how to make it a VIDEO, rather than stills.
For a Timelapse to look correct, all the photos have to be edited with the exact same adjustments. I’m not sure why you think people would have already done that step correctly. As a long time teacher, I can assure you that leaving out steps is not the way to go. It usually just leads to more confusion and wrong assumptions for the vast majority. All the tutorials on my UA-cam channel attempt to be as complete as possible for this reason.
Unfortunately photoshop is a very expensive tool for a non professional hobbyist. I create timelapses with the free version of davinci.
