- In part 4 of Matt's Path to Journeyman Smith he forges the largest blade in his set. This will show you how to forge a blade. This was hand forged from 80 CRV. This was made for Bladeshow 2022. This is for knife making beginners and advanced knife makers. In this video we also unveil weather or not Matt passed the test. This video shows blade forging, blade grinding, forging a knife guard, how to etch your logo onto the blade. It was really great to be apart of the '22 testing group. Guys like Will Stelter, Ryan Breuer, James Fleming testing with me and Neels Van Den Berg and Nick Rossi testing for Mastersmith made it all the better experience.

wait so, it's just his last apprentice blade?
@@LJMpictures yeah
3:05 Totally agree 👍
Procastination disrupts the process
This title was really shocking at first!
I was like "NOOOO! I haven't even been able to save up for one of your pieces and you're already out?!" LOL
Love your work process and the results!
Forging most of the Blades to 80%+ finished is such a Rare thing nowadays!
Thank you for making sure we have more blacksmiths/bladesmiths like you!
Sir can you please forge Burmese DHA.
beautiful work. That guard is gorgeous. It's funny that you say in the video that you weren't sure if you were ready for Journeyman status, cause my first reaction to the vid was "wait, how is he not already?!" congrats my dude, it was well earned.
I had a lot of people in my head. Enough doubters can shift your mindset. I also, up until I started that set, had never made a knife to JS standards.
@@ThatWorks then we will help shift your mindset positively, with our support
@@OPL001 I would love that!
Well said sir.
Now that is a knife. Congratulations on becoming a Journeymen, you absolutely deserve it.
thank you Adam! I wasnt sure at first but I agree with you now!
Definitely has Crocodile Dundee vibes. :D
@ThatWorks what happens now is illya gone
CONGRATULATIONS Matt. Im one of those guys that does not do social media, and I was wondering so thank you for sharing, and again congratulations!!
No problem. I debated on weather or not to share this once since it's been a year, but it felt right once I started editing it.
With you Matt and ilya and the other guys from another yt channel. I found my Hobby my little piece of freedom.

Thank you.
Oh that's excellent! What kind of things do you make? Have an Instagram?

I gotta say, the title scared me a bit... sounded like you were giving it up.
Great video and beautiful knife.
I spotted a wildWill at the end there
to me, your work on man at arms is proof enough of your ability
I'm glad to see you again. It's been a while. Congratulations on the promotion.
Great having you here! Look around the channel though. We have done some epic stuff this passed year
Hey. Welcome back!
I always enjoy watching you guys work no matter whether you work alone or as a team. I love watching you pour your hearts into your creations. It shows a lot of passion and commitment to the craft. Congratulations on passing the test.
thank you for saying that!
Congrats and thanks for the inspiration. I just joined ABS yesterday and now the clock is ticking. Thank you!
Oh that is fantastic. Do you plan on testing eventually?
@@ThatWorks I sure do. Just getting started on the path. Taking the two week VIB class in Jan...if all goes well should be eligible to test summer of '25.
Awesome. You and Will stelter need to do a calab together it be a amazing video or series to watch
WE did ! ua-cam.com/video/851IhkfUFFw/v-deo.html
Wow... just wow
Congrats. Hope to see you in your post doc.
:D not sure that will ever happen but one can strive!
Nice work Matt, congratulations.
Thank Tony ! I appreciate it.
A very nice blade! Definitely worth of a JS
Congrats!
That blade has a soul.
Fantastic work!
Thank you Brit!
Great build. 👍👍
Thank you Masi! I really enjoyed it!
Congratulations 🎉
This was amazing i have always
wanted to do forging and making cool stuff like this but of course i don't have the materials or this skill and i hope for you the best in the future
Thank you! I highly recommend joining your local blacksmith guild. Google your area. I am sure there is one within driving distance! a cheap way to get into the craft without having to invest in materials and tools.
That's one fine hunting blade. Congratulations on the title of Journeyman.
Thank you!
Congrates youg man .Happy trails
Thank you Mike! Means a lot to me!
Really nice work 🤟😺
A very beautiful and well made knife.
Thank you! I felt really solid about this one.
years Ago, I discovered Man at arms and I thought "that's awesome" and after a few years of not realy doing anything with my life I'm very proud to say that I've joined a cutlery school in my country since last september !
you guys have been an inspiration since so many years and for the longest time, learning to forge and make blades was like a dream I could never achieve.
that's why I jumped when I learned about that cutlery school here in Belgium, I'm proud to follow your footsteps guys !
That is great to here! What is the name of the school?
@@ThatWorks EAFC Jean Meunier (EAFC means basically a school for adults)
it's not a school dedicated to cutlery, it proposes a lot of different kind of formation on a lot of subject, I took cutlery and ironwork and I'm having a lot of fun !
thanks for your video I realy love to watch them, keep it up !
"top ten soothing youtube videos"
for real though congrats on becoming a journeyman smith! I always enjoy watching your guys' videos, not only for the awesome results, but the care you guys take in the process and the focus on education as well!
haha. Soothing! You are the first to say that for sure! Thank you!
Looks like a Kyle royer style knife, good stuff.
Well he is a master smith so I guess that is a compliment.
Well done!
Thank you Joe.
Cool loved it
Congrats Matt!
Thank you Peter!
Congratulations on your passing! That knife is beautiful. When you showed it, the only thing I thought was “That’s not a knife! This is a knife!”. Both Croc and Bowie would be proud of your knife. I’d love to see you compete on Forged in Fire one day or at least do a collaborative video with one of the judges. Maybe even for a charity. Would be fun.
I felt like I needed at least one blade to be on the larger side. Didn't realize that my whole set was much larger then the normal. I guess that's just the perspective of a sword maker trying to make knives.
Congratulation man, you deserve it !
Thank you very much Kalaam!
Not gonna lie, the title worried me for a minute before I clicked…..
Such is UA-cam...sorry for the confusion
Congratulations on making Journeyman Smith Matt. As I am not a fan of social media thank you for the update.
Sorry it took so long! Thanks for watching!
Congratulations man!
Thank you Logan!
Just to let you know, I saw that video only after seeing the friendly reminder community post of yours that a new video was available, I was surprised because I usually do not miss your videos, seeing that it has comparably low views maybe there was an issue. Congratulations to your Journeyman and do not forget to carry us along to your mastersmith title aswell :-)
No that is just UA-cam these days. If we do anything "knife" related it doesnt get pushed out by them at all.
Now that is one hell of a blade, sir.
Yea this one felt good! Felt like I knew what I was doing! Ish
Nice, very clean!
Thats the idea. Heck even this piece went a little further then needed for a JS set, but I wanted one that I could say that about.
Amazing work Matt. The skill, hard work, and attention to detail paid off. Congrats!
I doubted myself at times, but in the end, I did it!
@@ThatWorksIt's intimidating for sure. At what point were you like "screw it, my time is now"?
actually wondered what happened to that. Great that you finally become a journeyman
Thank you! Sorry it took me so long!
Awesome work brother
Thank you my friend!
Good job Matt
Thank you !
That's a damn nice piece.
Thank you! One of my favs!
Congratulations!!
you are too kind!
Dang, how did you manage to make the drill bits stay nice and straight and not wonder as you drilled out the handle
I suppose it's help to ask what thickness the bit is
Very nice.
Thank you! Cheers!
Joined the ABS a week ago after bladesmithing for a year, this gives me a lot of encouragement that I'll make it
Oh heck yea! Feel free to reach out on IG if you have any questions along your journey and check out part 1-3 of this series for more info. I talked more during those vids.
Congratulations, even as belated as it is
As someone who doesn't really use social media, thank you for the update
You are quite welcome! Thank you for the love!
Gratulation and Wath will be the next step and projects ? Are you still work with Illia together ,I hope so
Beautiful knife Matt, it turned out fantastic, but you know what I feel is truly missing, seeing you gain the skill to use the proper hand tools to shape the handles instead of the grinder - you use the hand files to shape the guard and blade, showing the skills.
Then you were not paying attention good sir! Go back and watch that section. I use a hand sanding block to do all the final shaping. I just roughed it in on a sander. Also, I honestly didnt film all of this knife. Just enough to paint the picture.
Honestly, you used a hand sanding block to finish it and just roughed it in with the big belt grinder. I think maybe you should go watch some of Illya's videos and see what real hand tool wood working looks like, it would involve the likes of maybe a plane, spoke shave, carving knife, rasps and/or files, sand paper is not a hand tool.
Extremely inspiring
Yea? Well that's what I love to hear!
Beautifully done Matt. Congratulations again on JS
Thank you so much 👍was quite the journey
Gorgeous work as always Matt, can't wait to see what you do for your masters.
Thanks brother! I have about 3 pieces for my MS set planned but still developing skills to match my desired designs!
@@ThatWorks glad to hear you’re pushing yourself! I’m sure you’ll make some stunning pieces.
You're not a bladesmith, you're an artist! Congradulations, your work is truely incredible!
And you are too kind!
Was that Will standing next to you at the end there?
Congratulations !!!!!!!
🤝🏻😁
Thank you!
Hey 👋 man how you doing bro perfect for hunting buddy blessings 🙌 🙏
Shoot...you carry a blade this big when you hunt? Only man that I know who does is my father
That is one clean knife! All business, with just a touch of style. Congratulations on getting your JS!
You nailed it! Exactly what I was going for and thank you!
I do the "I'll fix it later" too...later is always harder. 😂🤣😂
So eager to see progress, I actually make progress slower.
Beautiful Bowie, Matt.
*CONGRATULATIONS!!!*
One of the major lessons that I learned! Fix it now! Later costs you time and possibly can screw the whole piece up!
Congratulations sir!
Thank you Sathos !
@@ThatWorks you are so welcome Matt, you have worked your ass off to get where you are and for someone like me (disabled, no outdoor or workshop space) watching content like yours is as good as it gets man.
Congratulations!
Was that a Will Stelter beside you for that last clip?
Yes it was. They called us up alphabetically. Was great to share that moment with him!
Strangest video title yet. I searched the history trying to figure out where part 3 was and then I searched the playlists.
I will get the playlist all sorted out.
@@ThatWorks thanks!!!
Try to forge a java keris
Any particular material we should make it from ?
I love it and have been really impressed by your rating 👌🏻
Oh thank you Chris!
that last knife turned out amazing ,congratulations on your JS status ,you definately earned that one, those blades were beautiful
Thank you very much! Stay tuned for some more embellished pieces from me real real soon!
Did you have a favorite from my set?
@@ThatWorks ill have to go back and check out the rest of the videos to see if i can find the entire set and check them out again
Man you guys really do amazing work. What you do, and your path, but also Ilya when some videos highlight even how he does decorations all that is simply amazing to watch. Goodluck to everyone part of this channel
Masterpiece
Well that is far too kind.
Congratulations!
Thank you Tiber! did you have a favorite piece in this set?
@@ThatWorks This one. It looks massive and heavy, but neat and elegant at the same time.
congratulations.
Congrats and I appreciate all the great content you guys made over the years. It's been a real pleasure
Thanks Imac! Much more to come! Much much more!
Very clean work, especially on the guard!
Thank you! The video doesn't show it but I actually spent more time on the guard then I did the blade.
Well done! I wish the best for you on your journey to becoming a master smith.
Thank you! It will be a true test!
OOOOHHHHH….. final knife “Of the set”. I haven’t been keeping up with the channel and don’t really use social media aside from yt and twitch, so when I saw the video title I thought it meant you were quitting or retiring, or something. Almost had me hyperventilating, lol.
Im not quite done yet, but we are changing some things around here!
@@ThatWorks well I hope everything goes well, either way.
Congratulations, Matt! Beautiful and inspiring build. Thanks for sharing!
thats a beautiful knife! I'd definitely be willing to buy that if I could

I'm very happy for you Matt!! Congratulations!
Thank you John! This really means a lot to me. Wasnt sure id ever get here
Beautiful knife Matt! You are an awesome bladesmith with beautiful craftsmanship! Congratulations on your new title!
That is one beautiful knife and to add your own makers stamp makes it even more of a beauty. Thanks for the upload bro
Its probably obvious but how did you fix the handle without pins? Also that guard piece is sick and must gave been complex to forge...
Gorgeous knife sir! Love the design and look! I always enjoy the vids you guys make....pls keep it up! Many thanks
That means a lot! I will try to keep going! As long as YT doesnt limit me reach....
Nicely done, sir! Congrats again!
Thanks again my friend !
You've gained a new subscriber! This is what I love about YT, so many great and artistic people who share their great ability with us less creative people!
Well welcome Murph! Take a look around! Tons of buildy stuff vids :D
That’s a beautiful knife. The handle looks so awesome. What kind of steel was used?
I used 80Crv for all the blades in my JS set. It's a steel that I know and that I know performs at a high level.
Please make Dyrnwyn from the Disney version of The Black Cauldron and make it out of damascus steel and make the scabbard to go with it.
hmmm. that is a good idea.
Congrats! So awesome to see the conclusion. Gonna go for master smith now?
Was that Will Stelter in line beside you becoming a Journeyman at the same time?
Yes he was! Pretty cool eh ?!
Congratulations! You were a master smith years before this moment, making it official was just a formality.
Well I am still not a master. I am compared to some but not to others! Still much growth needed! Trust!
Nice knife Matt. You and Ilya got anything in the works these days?
We are always up to something!
beautiful blade! hehe i guess its not where's waldo but where's Will :D
THere you go!
Outstanding.... I have a question (or 2) what are the advantages of the "dog head" hammer? Did you make it?
Ilya made it. It is made for beveling more so then anything else. It compensates the angle of reaching over to forge the bevel. Hard to type. Easy to show.
I love the music! (And the knife obviously)
Thank you! It's always a challenge to choose music that fits the build and makes most people happy.
Beautiful knife. It was fun watching you and will stelter go through the j s process at the same time.
He and the other smiths that year were really great at sharing information and being a support group. It can be quite the stressful time.
Did I miss a part 3? The description says this is part 4, but I only see links to 1 and 2.
There is also a 3. I may even do a retrospective video on the whole thing.
