I think its amazing how you check the boxes for ADHD and the provider does not take it seriously. . . then what was the questionnaire for. . .

I was diagnosed at age 4, in 1980, when they first put ADHD in the DSM. I realized I didn’t have any records of my diagnosis despite being on medication from age 6-age 13, and a few year off and on from age 24-45. So my insurance made me take an assessment at 45 and besides an interview they gave me a single computerized test obviously designed for kids. They said I barely passed the test (being an ADHD test , passing meant you have ADHD I suppose). So she was openly reluctant to give me medication.

If you could do your ADHD assessment perfectly, your brain would probably work sufficiently well that you wouldn't be seeking a professional assessment for ADHD in the first place.

Exactly, but we think our brains should work in a neurotypical way, as that's the only way we have been shown.

thanks for this you don't know how much it means to hear these words or more likely you do, I haven't asked to be assessed yet I have just been gathering info now and again for the last few years in-between my life falling apart, I haven't had the best experiences with GP's in the last 25 years so not found one that is caring or comfortable enough to begin asking but the short videos I have watched by several different people have helped and your video here gave me hope thanks again.

What a great video. When I first saw how long it was I thought that I would only watch a few minutes of it until I got bored and start scrolling through the comments, or find another more stimulating video but I was actually able to watch through it to the end with only a little bit of fidgeting of the feet. Much love from Aotearoa-New Zealand.

Sitting and listening to you was very much like having a new friend to confide in. I’m having to provide an extra form for me as a child for my mother to complete, as the one provided by my partner, well he took umbrage at the word‘careless’ so said no, I am not often careless. Just because of a word, he managed to make the psychiatrist assume that I am anxious and depressed. I agree that the careless word doesn’t describe what I feel- I am always trying to do the best I can, but end up losing things, breaking or knocking stuff over accidentally because I am reaching for something. I walk into doorways, I have a constant narrative in my head along with multiple songs, I have trouble with sensory overload.Thankfully I have been told that I will get another appointment after my mother completes her form. I need to have notes to hand for my next appointment. Also I have requested a female psychiatrist, hopefully they will do that for me. Thank you for your video. ❤

Careless isn't a good word, but you possible lack the executive function to remember where you put things. You do care, but you cant remember because your working memory is impaired.

If I had had effective medication I don’t know how much better things would have been for me in school or at work. Nothing is 100% effective, and for me I haven’t found anything that worked the way it did when I was 6-13, but I wish I could have had something and not been afraid to use it.

Thank you so much for this video. I am gradually coming to the conclusion that I do have ADHD, but going for that formal assessment is quite a step. I worry about 'failing' it like I have failed so many things in my life, but I also think that the recognition would be quite helpful. Just such a shame that unless you can afford to go private, the waiting lists are so long. I am 49, and there's a voice in the back of my mind going 'what's the point in getting a diagnosis now?', but then being able to get support, and maybe my environment understanding me better etc would make a huge difference, and round and round it goes in my head...... So thank you. I will try and find the courage to actually do this.

I felt the same, but having that official diagnosis did validate a lot of things for me and allowed me to try medication, which was life changing. I sat on my self diagnosis for a while, but just over a year on, I'm glad I went for it.

Same here. I am scared of makin myself an idiot in their office or not being taken seriously (which a lot of doctors apparently have a problem with when it comes to me) or even that they do not care enough to make an elaborate diagnosis (I already heard the psychiatrist I am visiting decides it after 15 minutes and a 2-sided questionaire with simple questions but it was the only appointment I could get in my country actually without paying loads of money that I don't have). Weird feeling. Excited and scared at the same time.

I live in Australia these days. Its probably easier to ask for an assessment here because you pay for it yourself. We still have long wait lists and its expensive, but your GP is less likely to stop you at the first hurdle.
