As a lonnnnnnng time NoFX fan, there is something truly refreshing about seeing Fat Mike in a sober state discussing the music he loves the most. Idk why, but there’s something soothing as fuck about the way he carries himself nowadays in comparison to just being trashed and pissed off at everyone all the time like he typically use to be. There’s a tremendous amount of middle ground between those instances but anyone who has been following this band for years and years and years should understand what I’m trying to say. I’m proud of Fat Mike, I guess.
Totally agree. There def a tangible difference in his whole demeanor. He just give off a vibe of being very content that I think was missing for a number of years. I know he never really did drugs when he was younger and it honestly just felt and looked like a kind of midlife crisis where he indulged in all the stuff he never did while younger due to his responsibilities of running a label and managing the business side of a very popular band. I think he's said stuff to that effect as well. It never looks good when people in their adult years do that kind of thing where they reach a point where they're comfortable enough to live the life they never got to when they were younger. It just comes off as kind of sad, and he just doesn't seem to have that overcompensating type of air about him anymore and he seems much more genuine and grounded now.
No offense or anything BUT I seriously doubt he’s sober here in the interview. The only time he’s sober is the 1st 2/3min in the morning when he wakes up. Rest of the time he’s 😵💫😵💫😵😵🥴🥴🤒🤒
@@PunkRockRog Agreed. If you've followed them over the years you'll know that he goes up and down. He stays clean when not on tour, flies off the wagon when on tour then cleans up when touring is done. He gets help when he can't stop the partying after the touring season, which seems to be on occasion and not every year. As long as he doesn't over do it, it's his life and he can do as he pleases but I remember a few years there it was getting a little scary. Look at us, thinking we know what we're talking about based on the little bit of info they have divulged of their personal life lol!
In 1996, I was a sophomore in high school and was into Green Day, STP,...everything that was on alternative radio. After school one day, hanging out in the parking lot, a guy was blasting a NOFX cassette. I had never heard anything like that before. Was hooked ever since. First NOFX I bought was Heavy Petting.
I think it was 96 for me, but I would have been much younger haha I would have been 8 at the time, but my brother's friend gave him Liberal Animation on tape so that's what I first heard for NOFX. At the time I was just starting to get into punk rock so it was NOFX and the Misfits for next little bit.
Same year I was probably 13 but I heard them on either a punkorama or fat comp and found I heard they suck live on cd at a local record shop. Changed the game
Heavy Petting was such a strange record but it is full of underrated gems. It just sounds nothing like the material they had put out up until then. Still a terrific album in my opinion. But again, super fucking strange at times and definitely some tracks worth skipping so I hear ya.
Fat Mike’s ability to completely be him self and welcome all the things that the crapbags of the world have to say is something everyone should strive for.
The War On Errorism is up there in my top 5. It came out when I was just getting into high school and had a huge impact on me. They go from break-neck thrash to ska throughout the record, all with those distinct Nofx harmonies and blistering leads by Hefe. I loved the political edge of that album too. Been a huge fan of all their stuff ever since.

Nofx and Rudi P are two of the most influential bands in my life. I'm so glad Fat Mike shouted out rudimentary peni in this video because i don't think they get enough credit for how influential they really were. 💜💜💜

I hope the world starts recognizing how great of a bassist fat mike truly is? Having smelly on the drums really elevates his bass sound with the technical perfection smelly consistently puts down.
i always thought smellys drums and mikes bass fit together so well. so much so when i first started to learn to play the bass very young, i spent ages trying to work out how to get mikes tone and i always felt like something was missing. a few years later i realised that the bit of the sound i couldnt get was actually the kick drum lol
@@Spike223 I think it's a little weird, but I guess we're all different. However I think that Descendents had a big influence on NOFX, being probably one of the most influential punk bands of all times, especially if you lived in California in that period.

Yes! I saw Rocky Horror for the first time when I was 7 at the UC Theater in Berkeley, before it was the midnight movie. It was a double feature with Brian de Palma's Phantom of The Paradise, another rock horror musical. I feel the same way about RHPS, it helped make me the weirdo I am today. And another album I know by heart is on your list, How Could Hell Be Any Worse. One of my first hardcore album purchases. Universal Records, Telegraph Ave. I as well listened every day after school. Excellent choices I can relate to as Smelly was with me when I bought RP ep's/Death Church at Vinyl fetish, and RKL was always on, and that first BR record was spinning in my bedroom when it came out, and my stepdad came crashing in and ripped it off the turntable and frissbee'd it at the wall.
