Yes
I see this full tutorial and I must say u are one of ta best engineer because u did very subtle steps and by this the output is like dimond
59 second speaking and 1 second showing results
It’s not easy to both explain how to do this and demonstrate results in a 60 second short. It’s almost an either/or scenario.
That’s why I have a full video of this where I play the example song plenty of times with each component in and out, as well as the whole chain. That’s the best place to listen and hear a comparison of results.
Check the full video here: ua-cam.com/video/E756G8xzMw0/v-deo.html
Idc about how it sounds, I prefer to understand what was the thought process, and to me it was definitely clear and concise. Also, the dude has a full video also linked, I don't see what's your problem with this
@@pedrosilvaproductions let's say it was video of knowledge but not obvious for beginners
@@5piece it's also hardly worth showing the results in a short considering this is almost exclusively being played thru shitty mono phone speakers.
The process is what matters. The results are subjective.
Sick I love this
🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Brilliantly explained sir
Thanks
Thank you so much!
Amazing bri
Could you do a video where you explain how to get rid of that loudness and did softness. All my mixes are loud whereas others have this softness to it
Yes the n series eq is best for mid range stuff , i wouldve used the other eq instead of the custom series, custom series is more for a type of parallel eq effect but good stuff man
Totally hear you on that. I just used the custom series because it provides both a low and high cut filter while the N series is just the low cut (unless I’m mistaken). I also prefer the N series in general but the actual purpose was different here which is why I didn’t cue it up until later in the chain. Appreciate your comment none the less !!! 👊🏼
Man u r just underrated
There is nothing underrated about knowing how to get to where your going
@@4Bang9Gang man i was just trying to motivate him because he is doing an effort and he deserves to be appreciated that's all chill
Muchísimas gracias 👍👌😉
De nada! 🙏🏼
Its before take vocal or after?
Niceeee
thank you!
Can we talk about how you said use the filters on the custom eq to roll of the top and bottom while the knob is set to off
It’s enabled. Rolling off a very small amount so it looks close to OFF, but it isn’t
@@5piece I dunnnoooooo
Dude he used HP/LP filters to roll off extraneous noise then used the EQ to shape/boost the highs that were left over. The human ear can’t hear below 20hz or above 20khz. It feels like only rookies who don’t understand this would try and call him out for it
@@hockeytalk6084 you can feel that way, but you'd be wrong. :)
@@jinnybeats weirdo
Honestly I think some of the stuff are unnecessary. If there's bleeds, simply remove them in audio post.
Also for goodness sake, please level your vocal notes' gain in audio post before sending to the comps. Digital emulation comps don't like too much dynamic range because the way they react to it simply suck.
@Peter ⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻ Vocal Rider is good but personally I prefer to manually do it. There's nothing wrong with using that though, just a matter of preference and work flow as I often comp and time align while I adjust the vocal notes' gain individually.
So are you saying people should either use Vocal Rider or Manual Automation before compression for EVERY lead vocal, every time?
@@TzoHill yes.
And if the vocal performance doesn't hit right from the start, you'll need to craft out their own suitable dynamics, which is twice the difficulty than simply levelling. That's why polishing turd is plausible but a major pain in the ass and more expensive.
@@samuelng6441 ahh so that's why my vocals aint been hitting the way i wanted them to. okay sweet, imma do that. vocal rider it is!
So you took out top and bottom end, compressed it, put more high end back in. Seems like a bunch of different color things. But why can’t you just use one EQ?
You could use one EQ if you want but if you notice I break things up into stages. Ie, first I filter out the unnecessary info to focus it BEFORE I compress. I colour and enhance pockets of it later with EQ after compression bc often compression will bring out certain characteristics / tonality like the low end muddiness etc. If you didn’t know, there’s like 60 ways to do something with mixing. You just gotta try stuff and see what works for you. This is what works for me and leads to a result I’m happy with. Most folks will never be happy anyway, so as long as you are, that’s all that matters 💎
And with the stock plugins?
I feel like you could do without a couple of those plugins. In the wise words of your lyrics…. “Think you know it but you got a long way to go” 😅
Less is more I learned this years ago I think he could have to.
Not bad except if you’re getting harmonics out of the first preamp you should, instead of throwing on the last plug, just set up a quick distortion bus and then you can mix it in real nice lol. But honestly whatever feels good and sounds good doesn’t really matter how you got there
why'd you gated the vocal???? just why?
I explained it in the video. Helps mitigate / reduce any background noise in between vocal performance (not something that always needs to happen, but did in this case)
Wait why did you use an EQ to cut lows and highs and then add it back in with another EQ? Why not just leave it be?
I believe a few folks have asked this but to reiterate; we’re working through this in steps.
Specifically: we’re first cleaning things up and removing (with the filters) the excessive low and high frequencies that don’t provide any intelligible information.
Then we’re using bells and/or shelves (EQ) to enhance what’s still there. These are generally not enhancing the same frequencies we’re removing, but rather specific pockets in between.
You can leave the rumble or high air in (aka what we’re filtering out in the first step) but then when you go to enhance later, you’ll be bringing those problems up with you. I’d rather mitigate them first, then add (if adding is even applicable, which it was in this case). Hope this helps.
What ratio, attack, and release did you use for the comp?
This compressor doesn’t have those parameters as it’s an optical emulation similar to an LA2A. Watch the full video for a breakdown with longer explanations of each: My 7-Step Vocal Chain (with Slate Digital's Virtual Mix Rack)
ua-cam.com/video/E756G8xzMw0/v-deo.html
What if i add parallel compression to vocals does it overdo the mixing?
Nope! It’s situational of course but I’ll routinely apply a vocal chain like this while parallel compressing the overall vocal master for maximum thickness 😎 keep up the good work !
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
thank you brother!
How to reduce headphone sound?
Are you referring to headphone bleed? If so, you’ll want to use a good pair of closed back headphones first of all that are properly secured on the performers head with minimal leakage. Also watch your monitored level on the headphones and reduce it if headphone bleed is too problematic. Finally, consider using a gate to minimize those moments where the performer isn’t performing yet the headphone bleed may be still being picked up by the mic. That’s what I’d do!
you took out the highs and put the highs back lol
Ok? It’s not uncommon to filter out excessive high end (clicks, artifacts) to minimize problems (aka pre-treatment) and then apply a boost to enhance the air and top end shininess for the stuff that’s left. Try it out before judging, you might be surprised 😏
No he didn’t. If you actually LOOK at the channel strip he only rolled off the extremes to get rid of extraneous noise. He then boosted the highs that were left over. He only rolled off the extreme high end. This is common stuff. Not sure what people are so confused about unless they’re brand new to audio engineering.
u no ur old when u go hardware over software any day of the week..
I don’t blame you. It’s definitely a different experience when you can actually touch the gear, move the knobs and get that magic going. BUT, the convenience and now-comparable sonic quality of software makes both viable. End of the day, use what you like! As long as it sounds good 🤙🏼
Correct! And you're also standing in your way by not getting with the times and choosing to remain stuck in the past.
ALL that and the End result sounds HORRIBLE 😅
😂😂😂
Step 1: Do a whole bunch of stuff to make the vocals warm, level, and overall great.
Step 2: Ruin all that by applying overdone autotune.
I would love to hear the vocals without pitch correction
Not gonna lie, like a lot of music UA-cam "tutorial videos" this is just word salad to me. Those who understand probably won't be watching and those who are watching probably don't understand. I've learnt more from one producertech video in 8 minutes than in days worth of confusing UA-cam videos. This may as well be a Willy Wonker magic sweet shop machine video as far as I'm concerned.
Overkill.
Sounds like it's pure autotune
Ikr
It fits the style, and that's what matters honestly. Also, it has a bunch of autotune, and the slight frequencies with the compression it has stand out
Thank you Pedro - you nailed it here.
Awesome Matthews - worry about the chain, not the example. If you notice I didn’t mention the tuning at all - just stuff that translates regardless of the style. Try it on an AutoTuned vocal or a not AutoTuned vocal, it more or less works.
If you don’t like the music or style, it doesn’t mean you can’t utilize any of the knowledge here. You can hear the difference with the A/B, and even moreso in the full video if you take the time to watch.
No one should try it it's not skill at all it was overuse of plugins, this was a horrible example.@@5piece
Literally awful
Indeed lmao

Are u robot ._.
No. Are you? 😂

Lol, yes gating is used in professional vocals
….yes, they are 😅
@@5piece manually editing them to be tight is much better
This is a horrible chain. Does not show the microphone, the interface, or the room.
lol "vocals" mastercourse and then autotune mickey mouse
"Mastercourse" is neither an actual word, or a word I used to describe any of the contents of this video ;) sorry that sharing my vocal chains for free triggers you so much
Its getting so hard to find anything good anymore having to dig thru all this trash content were drowning in everywhere!CULTURAL POLITION - my new word for all these people posing like their experts in things going around giving out terrible advice or putting out awful music/art/content/etc.Dood yes "it's financially free", but it does cost peoples TIME! & worse, for people just staring out (that cant detect your bs)& trying to learn, people not knowing what their doing themselves trying to act like they do, giving them "tips",does nothing but hurts those people & makes them worse mixers to....they will then have to eventually UN-learn your "Tips". Also if your recomending that they buy certain plugins/gear... that you do or do not know IS NOT the best possible plugin option for that task (or there are significantly better plugins that do the same type of task even better.. for the same or even less $... or often for FREE!).. then that too is costing them $$ & time, & is hurting your viewers. Please properly put in the effort & work to Learn 1st... before you try to Teach.
not good. I'm sorry. It's important to have a good vocal to begin with so you have less to fix.
That sounds like robotic CRAP
I'm only disliking because u ruined ur video at the end. Great job with your mixing skills though
Thanks. You engaging is all that really matters, like or dislike, you help this channel grow ;) What about the end "ruined" it?

How so?
