CBGB was a New York City music club opened in 1973 by Hilly Kristal in Manhattan's East Village. The club was previously a biker bar and before that was a dive bar. The letters CBGB were for Country, Bluegrass, and Blues, Kristal's original vision, yet CBGB soon became a famed venue of punk rock and new wave bands like the Ramones, Television, Patti Smith Group, Blondie, and Talking Heads. From the early 1980s onward, CBGB was known for hardcore punk.
One storefront beside CBGB became the "CBGB Record Canteen", a record shop and café. In the late 1980s, "CBGB Record Canteen" was converted into an art gallery and second performance space, "CB's 313 Gallery". CB's Gallery was played by music artists of milder sounds, such as acoustic rock, folk, jazz, or experimental music, such as Dadadah, Kristeen Young and Toshi Reagon, while CBGB continued to showcase mainly hardcore punk, post punk, metal, and alternative rock. 313 Gallery was also the host location for Alchemy, a weekly Goth night showcasing goth, industrial, dark rock, and darkwave bands. On the other side, CBGB was operating a small cafe and bar in the mid-1990s, which served classic New York pizza, among other items.
Around 2000, CBGB entered a protracted dispute over allegedly unpaid rent amounts until the landlord, Bowery Residents' Committee, sued in 2005 and lost the case, but a deal to renew CBGB's lease, expiring in 2006, failed. The club closed upon its final concert, played by Patti Smith, on October 15, 2006. CBGB Radio launched on the iHeartRadio platform in 2010, and CBGB music festivals began in 2012. In 2013, CBGB's onetime building, 315 Bowery, was added to the National Register of Historic Places as part of The Bowery Historic District (not a New York City Historic District).

My wife and i were visiting New York and had to go and see CBGB`s. CBGB`s was closed however the front door was opened so we went inside and there where 2 men counting a large pile of money. They turned to use and we asked if we could go inside and have a look. They said yes and we had the place to ourselves. That was a blast and an awesome experience.

So sad. We used to play there a lot in the late 70's and it felt like my second home. I can't remember how many times I'd plop into a taxi from my apartment in the West Village and say to the cab driver, "Bleecker and the Bowery, please!" The stage used to bounce up and down with every band member hopping up and down, so when you were trying to sing, you had to keep your mouth away from the mic a bit -- otherwise, you'd knock your teeth out! The bathroom was great and we used to run down there constantly to do another line of coke. haha A unique place, for sure.

My family and I were on a double decker tour bus and we drove by CBGB's. I freaked out, the driver never even mentioned it. Next stop I stopped a taxi and asked if the guy knew were CBGB's was, he took us back down there. My wife and kids stood outside because they were young kids, I went in and was stoked. The lady behind the bar told me they were closing in October, made me so sad. I couldn't believe how low the riser was. Glad I got to go in it.

One of my biggest regrets is not taking a photo of myself outside as it closed around a year later. I love the Ramones, and it looks like a place they'd play, lol! It has that very punk feel. My favorite Ramones album is "Road To Ruin" and as every 80's teen knows, you totally trashed your LP's. They were played constantly. No matter how hard you tried, scratches happened. It now is proudly framed above my bed. Along with my first Cher album (an Australian Release) and my original Bay City Rollers album from my very early teens. All of them hold significant meaning to me.
Thank you, Scott, for taking us to places we may never get to visit!

Scott, people stopped going to clubs in NYC because they banned smoking in bars around that time. Places like CB’s had a no re-entry policy. So when people went outside to smoke they couldn’t come back in without paying a cover again. Plus the neighbors began complaining about the smoke going up through their windows from the crowds of smokers and their noise outside all night.
Another thing also began. Higher taxes. This drove Hilly so move to Nevada and he opened the club again in Vegas but it was far from the same as NYC. So basically the city drove classic clubs like CBs out.
A cool factoid. Tommy Victor from Prong was a sound man, and artists like Blondie, Izzy Pop, the Ramones and Talking Heads were regular fixtures.
It was legendary and it’s a shame the city didn’t honor its heritage the way they should’ve.

I don't know if there was a no re-entry policy back then, if there was, I was one of the lucky ones because we'd go back and forth between cbgbs and Max's Kansas City, we always got back in without a problem.

I traveled from Boston to see Chis Knock and fellow legendary New Zealand band the Clean in the late 80s at CBGBS It was an incredible show! One of the highlight was when David Kilgour broke his string and while fixing it Chis Knock came on stage and did an impromptu song about burning the chairs while Hamish and Robert Scott were pounding away with bass and drum.. Once David got is guitar in order they broke into "Point that thing".

Great video! We visited the RRHF this Summer and after looking around to make sure the coast was clear I quickly touched the famous CBGB awning...I was just as quickly told 'Don't touch!' but I did again anyway...because that's what punk CBGB would have wanted.😎🤘

Great stuff bro ,I remember seeing crowded house there in the 80's it was so much fun knowing people that could get you in to clubs and get you drinks 😬the one thing about that club after hearing a band you couldn't hear it so loud and small and you'd smelled like smoke , good shit brother

Lita Ford wrote in her memoir that you could never get a good sound in that club, the way it was built.

I wonder did Prince ever perform at CBGBS in the early 80's before Purple Rain. I believe that Andre Cymone probably did because he gave a shoutout and quoted CBGBS in the song " Ritz Club" from his 1st album " Livin in the New Wave". Check that record out.

IAlso have pictures of the iconic bathroom and all of the signatures on the walls. My older sister met Sid and Nancy there. The Ramones played there quite often...Great video Scott and thanks for sharing 🤘 🤘

It was my 40th last week, I'd saved for years to go to New York to do this, however with the floods (and TBH how NY has been as of late), I didn't go. One of my biggest regrets was not going to CBGB's when it was open. Thank you Scott for being on tape, and doing this video!
