The Party Boys version got to nearly top the charts and fared much better than this Chantoozies version. I prefer this version even though I'm a John Swan devotee. At the time both got lots of airplay and I think it just wasn't going to happen that people would consider buying both. From what I remember I think the Chantoozies version only got to manage to get in the 30s in the Top 50 charts. Surprisingly as it was a well known version. I like the Chantoozies version more. Especially the music clip.
What was it about this song that made it get covered by everyone and their mother? Hell even Def Leppard has a version of it. The Happy Mondays version will always have the most sentimental value, but this one has the most pep by far.
It's probably the message conveyed in this song, which I believe is about religion as a vehicle for colonialism. Pretty depressing message, and I think that the Chantoozies made a mockery of it.
