Michaela Murphy grew up fast. She started taking care of herself at age 6 - and at age 12 - she voiced Toph in Avatar: The Last Airbender. She stopped to continue school and recently graduated from Yale - where she faced a whole new set of challenges and discovered a new dream.

Key to her success as a voice actor is that her voice is crystal clear. Her speaking style is so clean, and her tone is beautiful and bright. I worked in advertising for many years and hired many voice-over artists. Part of it is genetics; you get the voice that you get. Part is personality; her intellect, warmth and optimism shines through in her voice. It’s a great package. Her voice is wonderful.

I think she’s a little too skinny, but as long as it’s not unhealthy, it’s fine, and it’s far more healthy than being overweight.
Not only she's smart, funny, and pretty, she's just so down to Earth. She's awesome! Thank you for voicing one of my favorite characters.
Kudos for Michaela! Such a self-made woman. I love how she articulated her experience, without self pity, but with so much integrity and gratitude towards her mother! I'm really thankful that she shares her story with us, that could help anyone who had go through similar experiences, me included.
I would totally love to see her movie. She reminds me of Jordannian actress named Jonna Arida, from Netflix series, they both got this infectious quirkiness and joy to them, and they are both red headed!

Totally, she's awesome. And I think there are no self made people. For instance, the fact her mom sat her down and made her plan how to achieve her goals, that is foundational. Also the independence she gained through being home alone. Going to a rigorous high school that taught her math to a level to get her into Yale.
None of this is to minimize her achievements in any way. She had to show up, do the work, and maintain a good attitude. And it's a community that creates successful people.

Not a damn thing stopping her from continuing in voicework now if she so wishes. Hell, she could likely do full screen acting if she so wishes; not only is she articulate, the woman is attractive as all hell!

It's wild to me how much she embodies Toph. Or rather the other way around! Toph raised herself in a lot of ways, and she achieved the impossible not just once by learning Earth Bending on her own, but again by pioneering Metal Bending! She and Toph are a perfect fit.
She has that Daphne from Scooby-Doo vibe.

My cousins' dad was a businessman and mom was a doctor.
They also had to raise themselves from a VERY early age.
Sure they got into a lot of trouble but they learned life very well and are now responsible grown ups, with kids of their own, and they are loving and caring parents themselves.

I really do hope that she decides to get back into voice-acting. I really think she could become like Tara Strong, where she voices a whole bunch of new cartoon characters, and a whole new generation of kids could grow up hearing her voice everywhere, kind of like how a whole generation of kids from the early 2000s and later 90's grew up hearing Tara Strong.

To be honest, I don't know how I found myself here. Of the movies/shows she's in, I've only ever watched Finding Nemo. However, I'm glad I've watched this little interview as I'm going to University this September! It's not a Russell Group University (I live in the UK, London) but I'm hoping after doing Biomedical Science, I'll transition into Medicine and ultimately become a Psychiatrist. Michaela, you have gained my admiration and, of course, GOOSE FEATHERS!

My first C was in high school in APUSH. That sent me into one hell of a tailspin that I didn't recover from until 5 years later.
Latchkey and single parent kids can be just as successful as anyone else but if you have kids in the future then try your hardest to give them a mother and a father, they are the yin and yang of a child's development and absolutely critical. It sounds like Michaela has an amazing mother though!

It's strange that her talking voice sounds like a sane Azula, but in an instant she can switch into being Toph.

Very relate to your parents experience. Parents planning what’s best for me and then you talk to therapists or advisors and it’s like, uh you don’t need to do that .
I do not know if it's true or not but there was a rumor that when Michaela was growing up, she lied to her friends who got allowances that she saved her acting money for traveling but was actually using it to help support her mother.

Voice actors don't get enough credit in my opinion, there's just as much hard work that goes into creating a personality for a character's voice as there is with physical acting.

I do enjoy seeing these actors going to univeristies. Now granted they are all more privledged and going to school is a lot more easy for them than the average joe, but there is this sense of humility there that is respectable. Having a back up plan if something doesn't go well or knowing when to back off if your career may not go to the stars like the ROC for example.
