- Echeveria elegans
Mexican Snowball
This Echeveria is one of the most easily recognizable of its species. The light-green rosette does well indoors when given enough light. It is often referred to as “hens and chicks,” not to be confused with Sempervivum.

They have the cutest little yellow flowers, i never water mine and she’s looking so far and spiky I love her
Such a simple plant, but beautiful.
I love how quickly Echeveria can be propagated! Thanks
I believe this was one of the first succulents that I overwatered and killed. Good to know these tips in case I ever try again
I just bought my first ever succulent (and first ever plant) today! So excited!
Yay! Watch out... It gets addicting 😊😆
Same hahaha so happy so what's the result
i started months ago and now i have 9 or 11 if the 2 leaves that fell off grow lol
Me too!! Today is my birthday
Adelaide Santos happy birthday!
Summer=slow growth! That explains a lot! Thank you for your informative videos. I am hooked on succulents.
Cassidy, these vids have inspired me to print out your beautiful succulent info cards and make labels for my babies so I can ID them immediately.
I don’t have this one but I do have the hen and chicks that can stay outside in the winter. Thanks for explaining the difference between the two.
Very informative. My elegans are beautiful blue colour but they remain small and flat despite being under a grow light. Will try putting them outdoors for a bit of morning sun. The babies that the cut stem produces are very small. Hoping they will get bigger with a little sunbathing.
Echeverias are one of my favorites - they are all so beautiful!
I am getting overwhelmed with all m y choices.
Thanks for the great information!
I have some type of echeveria..its more of a lime green and its in a pot arrangement with a variegated aeonium. So far its doing well. Its getting indirect sunlight..I'm excited to see how big it will grow.
Very exciting!
Love learning about plants I don't have, yet!
I love this one!
I’ve stayed away from echeverias since I live in the PNW, but we’ll see how some I have this year do over winter - maybe I can do more if the grow lights work ok!
"Echeveria" is a latinization of the name of the Mexican botanical artist Atanasio Echeverría y Godoy. Although the "ch" in Spanish is pronounced like in the English word "shine", in Latin the "h" in "ch" is mute and therefore is pronounced like the "c" in "cat" or the "ch" in "character". Also, the letter R is trilled (rolled) and pronounced like in Italian (or French, Spanish and Portuguese): this one is the most difficult phoneme for native English speakers . I found out an amazing video explaining the pronunciation of Latin words here: ua-cam.com/video/0oWWOJW3948/v-deo.html.
Don't feel bad: almost everyone speaks lousy Latin (even Latin teachers) and almost everyone mispronounce this genus. Cassidy, your videos are so amazing and accurate and the correct pronunciation of Latin words can really help differentiate your channel from the others. I hope that I am giving back some of the knowledge you already gave us. 💚🌵
Thanks for the feedback! I've done a lot of research on pronunciation for Echeveria as well. Though it is a Latin name, many people feel it should be pronounced after the Spanish name and both are considered accurate in the Botanical world. But it's a hot topic for sure.
I love your explanation! I'm definitely working on getting better at these 😊
The correct pronunciation of Latin words can be quite challenging so… 😊
A tip: you can watch movies at Kaldrostream. Been using it for watching lots of of movies during the lockdown.
@Mario Jagger yea, I have been using Kaldrostream for since november myself :)
Beautiful succulent! Thank you for the great videos!
Beautiful. Love the shape of it. Will be keeping my eyes out for one!
Thanks for the video!
In the future, could you maybe do a mini-crash course on succulents and cacti for places such as zone 5?
Yes! I have an overview here:

This is 1 i dont have yet!
Thank you for this much need information! My succulent has flattened and now I know why and will provide it with more light! I am learning a lot about the care of my succulents thanks to you!!
Ah-ha! I have one that feels like an echeveria, but has a ton of chicks, like a sempervivum. Perhaps this is who she is!! (though her leaves all have red on the tips. Maybe because of where she is in the ground?)
Take a look here for some help figuring out what it is:

good watering information
Mine is going through a slow and horrible death. I tried to propagate leaves and they only grew roots (the ones that didn't rot)😢 I wish I would have seen this earlier, I hope it's not to late to save my baby.
Leaf Propogation is such a satisfying art.😊
My husband has this plant in his home office. It hasn’t gotten enough sun, and now has stretched out.
It looks like a ballerina.🙂
I was planning to place it in my home office. Thanks for the heads up
Still trying to ID but I think I have this echeveria. Too many which are too similar for a quick clear ID for a newbie.🤔
Yes! They are confusing! But if you get close enough that's what counts for care. Different if you're a collector though...
I have one of these and it is about 3-4 inches tall and only has leaves at the top but there are some starting at the bottom. What should I do?
You could let it keep growing, or... I highly recommend chopping off the top and replanting it. You'll likely get new babies on the original plant and the cutting will root and keep growing too!
succulentsandsunshine.com/yt-stretched
Nice
I have a question, in the video you say it is a summer dormant but on the website it says it is a winter dormant. so what is it really?
🤦🏼♀️ Sorry! It is winter dormant.
Your knowledge of succulents has been very helpful. Thanks!
This is such an iconic succulent type! I wonder where the name Mexican Snowball came from?
The blue/green succulents doing better indoors really explains my collection now. All of my greenest succulents have done the best while indoors! I tend to like the soft succulents more than the cold hardy ones, though the cold hardy ones are awesome too! This may be on the top of my wish list especially because I'd love to get some chicks every now and then. :)
I have done well with Echeveria Elegans in the Midwest by putting outdoors during our summer and bringing it in for winter. It did stretch by the window seeking light...will try a grow light this winter. I never tried propagating with leaves...will try that too!
I hope you do a video for echeveria agavoides ebony. I don't why they die on me haha. I've successfully raised other agavoides plants but never the ebony. Great video as always 😊
I think I have one of those! Never knew the name. Thanks
Thanks ... oh so that’s what it’s called ...another mystery solved ... thanks again !!!
I think I killed one of these, didn't know about summer dormant plants.
I have had Echeveria with not much success. Now I know what I need to do to be successful. Thanks!
Fun! So many different types of Echeveria!
I think I have this one, actually more than one but haven't tried propagating the leaves yet. I would like to try that.
I learned that both Ice plant and snowball can’t deal with full frozen winter. Who names these things?!
At the moment i have 3 succulents. 1 purple one 2 green ones. And the purple one had a loose leave so now i let it dry and i put it on soil today so im pretty nervous right now😂. Oh and 1 green one shoot out a little bit so i moved it to a window🥰
Thank you for this video. Very helpful!
Mine is flat. I will give more light. Thank you.
Always wanted Mexican Snowball so glad you explained about when dormant. Will look for one today on internet.
got this plant a few days ago for my birthday! very pretty plant
I have had problems with these, I didn't realize they were winter growers. I think I overwatered😢
I had one but the roseate became smaller, the new leaves didn't grow as much as the old ones.
Have these on my wish list. My daughter in law has some around base of her house and lokks so cutie
Your video are so amazing I love them have a happy 2020
Thank you for another helpful video!!
Mine echiveria leaves are turning purple and dying

I always tend to flip or flatten my echeveria. Never can get enough light for them without burning them. It’s one or the other extreme for me. Such trail and error!!!!
I don't have this one, although it's very pretty!
Love this one! Thanks for the info on propagation - I’m excited to try growing baby echeveria!
I need help. Mine is blooming and has new growth in the middle but the bottom leaves are thick and turning yellow and sagging. I’m worried that my whole plant will be naked. I have it within 6 inches of 30w full spectrum grow lights. Shallow 4in terracotta pot w/ drainage. Newly planted in succulent/cactus soil with added pumice. The soil has horticultural sand already mixed in. Peat moss free. I transplanted when dry into dry soil and waited a week before soaking the soil. The soil is dry but waiting to see any indication from the leaves that it’s time to water…
Blooming can be a stressful time for succulents and it's possible that repotting while blooming could have given it some shock. Are you able to send me some before/after photos to support@succulentsandsunshine.com?
I have a baby snowball and can't wait to see it get bigger!
I'm trying to propagate this one now thanks for the information! 😄
I'm leaving some feedback so you can have some constructive criticism and improve your channel: the info is great, audio quality and picture is great, but if I can't see the plants :( Closeups!
Thanks for the feedback :)
I love chicks and hens, but they never survive the summers in the desert.
I think I got a rescue one of these I'm trying to save
I need to figure out some way to get sun, since it’s still too hot, I’m trying to figure out if growlights or shaded patio would be better. So many things to consider!
Vivo en el desierto de Sonora, las temperaturas en Verano llegan a los 115 °F. I'm afraid this temperatures may burn my succulents. I'm a begginer with succulents. I think I got a Echeveria Elegans. Sonora México.
This one can grow indoors in bright light, so if you find it's not doing well in the heat, you can bring it in.
We call it "rose cactus" in the Philippines.
I really like the blue-ish translucency of these. Thanks for the info.. as always! 🌵😁
I have an echeveria that I beheaded, and that part turned out great. I eventually was going to repot the mother plant, but found beginning stages of root rot. I cleaned it up and set it up for water propagation, and also removed some old/poor looking leaves. I now have 4-5" roots, rosettes at the top where I beheaded it before, but also have rosettes starting where I removed leaves before, about 2-3" below the top of the stem. I'm slowly removing older & larger leaves, wanting to make sure the smaller rosettes can feed the plant before entirely removing the large leaves. The plant overall looks funny, though, with rosettes up and down the stem. Do you have a recommendation as to when I might be able to behead again, and even out the growth pattern? I'm in AK, so definitely working with a grow light. It's been fun working with my small collection of succulents and watching your videos.
Great question! It's wonderful that your succulent is doing so well after suffering from root rot. With the new rosette growth along the stem, you can remove them when they're about the size of a quarter. Treat them as regular cuttings then, allowing them to callous over before replanting in well-draining soil.
Good luck!
Should I be trimming off the stalks/blooming flowers or leaving them alone??
I just found your channel and I’m loving it! So helpful!!
You can let the flowers grow and bloom if you like them :)
I just found a bunch of these at my local grocery marked down to $1.99!!! I'm going back tomorrow and get them all🤩
So exciting!
Mine isn't doing too well as it has stretched quite a bit. I'm fairly new to growing any kind of plants but I now know it wasn't getting enough light and probably isn't in the best of soil as it is regular potting soil, not succulent/cactus soil. Your videos have been helping me a lot so far!! Thank you!
You are very welcome! Glad the information has been helpful :)
I received my first echieveria today ♥️
I don’t have this one but it may be one to try though?
My echeveria is growing beautifully. I took a leaf off and it sprouted two babies. The original echeveria is about 7 inches tall, with two vines of tulip-like flowers growing out of it. I have these plants on the window sill that gets sun all day.
That's fantastic!
I forgot to leave a window open (didn’t think of buying a growing lamp) during Christmas break so it stayed in the dark for a while and started growing upwards?? It’s a bit wonky now but I think it’s doing better. There are some dead leaves at the bottom and I don’t know if i should take them out or leave them like that
It depends on what you want it to look like down the road. Take a look at this video for help with stretching:
ua-cam.com/video/PYUFJmp_3zA/v-deo.html
what is the right form of this echeveria? I am not sure should it be parallel to the ground or is it twisted
.
My leaves die after a while paralleled, could you please help what should I do?
It's typically parallel to the ground. It's normal for lower leaves of an Echeveria to dry up and die. Take a look at this post for more information:

What soil mix to use
You can find our recommendations here:

I don't have this one in my garden yet and there isn't enough room in my house to winter it over! Maybe next year.
So pretty! I didn’t know they would go flat before they stretch for more light.
Love this beauty, thought they needed water when it flattened out 😞
That was really helpful. I purchased a Mexican Snowball last week itself.
We're so glad it helped!
Help mine is getting really dark, hard leaves. What would be the reason? Is it better as an indoor or outdoor plant in Las Vegas climate?
It can be grown indoors as well as outdoors. If you are worried about it dying this post can help:
www.succulentsandsunshine.com/yt-dying
Thanks for explaining the difference between hens and chicks. I was confused with sempervivums and Echeverias.
So weird that these are called hens and chicks too. I never knew that.
Lost a bunch of these due to sunburn :(
I ended up over watering this one... love this series!!
Nice I will try to save my limp one
Just love the delicate semi-translucency of the leaves of Mexican Snowball when grown in good light. I'm trying to find a white Echeveria that would stay white under good grow lights.
Thanks for the video! I am excited to try to stimulate offsets by giving it a "haircut"
So with cutting the head off to make the plant grow new roots, is this true for all Echeveria? Is there one that you cannot do this with or should not do this with?
As far as I know you can cut off the top of all Echeverias. The top cutting will grow roots and the base will put off new rosettes.
I just bought my first succulent! I’m very excited! Is it ok to put it by my window near the sun? Or does it not need that much sun? I live in seattle, wa so we do get rain and sunshine here from time to time. Thank you!
I haven't heard of this one before. Thanks for the info on this cute plant!
I have this and didn’t know what it was called until I watched this. LOL. Mine is thriving indoors right now. No babies yet but looking great so far and keeps growing. It seems to need more watering than usual and not prone to root rot like some other echeverias.
Thanks again for a great class!
Is there a way I can send you some pictures of my huge mexican snowball?

I love hens and chicks no matter what kind they are. For some reason though, I don’t have a lot of success with them. I must try and figure out what I’m doing wrong!
Mine has soft fat leave tips and oozing liquid. Can that be a sign of over watering?
Yes, definitely. Take a look at this post for help:
succulentsandsunshine.com/yt-dying
I've had outdoor hen and chicks in Northern New England- not snowballs, though. All echeveria are so gorgeous!
A beautiful and delicate plant! Now is in my wish list!
