30:50 Yeah, in Gen 8 they combined Friendship and Affection, so when you get to high enough levels of friendship, you gain the benefits of high affection from gens 6 and 7. Affection has 5 levels (6 if you count zero, which is the default) Level one has no benefits, level two grants boosted EXP gain, level three grants a chance for the pokemon to survive attacks with one HP (starting at a 10% chance and increasing as you go, to a max of 25% and max affection), level 4 grants a chance for moves to miss (does not work against moves that can't miss, such as swift) and a 20% chance for the pokemon to auto heal from status conditions, and level 5 doubles the pokemon's chance of getting a critical hit.
The elite 4 is significantly harder than the rest of the game because every trainer pokemon in the game has 0 EVs and IVs, but all of the elite 4 has competitively perfect EVs and IVs. Edit: I wrote this before 47:00
Is it like that in the previous games or is that a new[er] addition? All I remember is that gen 1 (and maybe get 2) didn't have IVs or EVs, right? I'm not even 100% on that though
The fact that there are twenty minutes of video left by the time you reached the Elite Four tells me that this is going to go about the way as I expected. Which isn't to knock you at all! But they just went wild on that last challenge in this remake.
Your Bronzong surviving that hit during your fight with Volkner is yes one of the newer game mechanics, the Pokemon you've got a high friendship with, will not only cause an innate Endure but will also randomly crit from time to time too. Its pretty handy actually. Also they'll randomly dodge an attack via you shouting a warning to them similar to how Ash and other characters in the anime do it. This particular mechanic has been a part of the series since Sun and Moon.
@@Animeman284 Though gen 8 is where it became nearly unavoidable because it was rolled into friendship rather than being the separate affection, hence why MDB has never seen it in spite playing through X and ORAS, and at least starting Sun.
@@jamesdinius7769 Was it? I never really noticed since the mechanic is really RNG based for when it wants to kick in for a crit, removing a status effect like poison, enduring an attack or dodging an attack.
At the start, I was thinking "Well, the newer gens have felt so much easier, especially with some of the new mechanics and-" then I saw the length of the video. Wow.
Since newer gens are happening now, is there any use hoping for Sun and Moon? Though honestly, with how versatile the wild area can be (by adjusting your system time, if that does not count as an exploit, and they made specific dates for certain weathers), a no new moves run could be very interesting in Sword/Shield.
I have a really good feeling about this one! Naturally I'm curious, which fossil did you pick? I can't tell because the video hasn't been released yet XD.
there have been rumors he might just be using the same helixfossil video footage in each video to safe time. going with this i guess it will be helix again
Next time, you can use the vs seeker. Some trainers level up. And two near the trophy garden will make you incredibly rich. You just have to put up with spinning your stick for 100 steps (preferably on your bike). It's pretty automatic for me at this point. 8 or so spin by my character on the bike, use vs seeker, if no response, repeat. No need to exit the route or anything like that. Also, Snowpoint Underground, I think, has a lucky egg.
Yep. Perfect IVs, very good EV spreads, good natures, and good items. It wouldn't stand up in real competitive tournaments but it's a nightmare for playthrough teams.
Yeah, I remember seeing something about how a lot of trainers - particularly gym leaders, the E4, and other notable fights - have much more competitive pokes than we're used to in the mainline series. I'm at the point in the vid where E4 Heracross has Earthquake, which is a TM move. It's not like pokes have never had TM moves before, but it's usually been a bit more niche than just straight up best ground coverage move (in the past it's usually been limited to either the gym leader's TM, or moves that are at least more appropriate on the poke that has it; I recall Agatha in gen 1 having Toxic on her Gengar for example, which is more fitting given that it's part poison, and isn't nearly as brutal as it having something like Psychic or TBolt). Basically, some of the 'harder' trainers in the game get given builds which are a bit closer (if not spot on) 'battle mansion' type builds. It's a good change IMO, but it can definitely catch you unaware - like Heracross coming out of nowhere to EQ your fire poke you're using to counter it.
Currently playing through Diamond, only the second time since high school. Also playing battle revolution too. Using Poison types mainly. Good fun. Roserade is one of my favourites so nice to see it
Commenting on this for visibility, the world needs more pokemon challenges! How else am I supposed to distract myself from the always-looming existential dread, hiding in the silence? :)
Hey MDB! In case you ever decide to do another BDSP challenge, there's a way to transfer Pokémon from every profile using only one Switch Internet account! If you open Home on your main file with Internet, you can change which profile's data you're looking at on the game select screen. Where it shows your name and profile icon, hover over it and hit A. Just change it to your Challenges profile, go into BDSP, move whatever Pokémon you want to your Home box, change back to your main Profile, and voila! I used this to get a Porygon from BDSP into Legends to evolve it into Porygon-Z, then into a playthrough of SwSh on a different profile. It's a bit complicated but once you do it once, it becomes like second nature. Plus, using this method, you don't even need to trade to evolve some Pokémon (using the Linking Cord in Legends negates the need to trade). I know I'm a bit late to the party but I figured I'd drop by and help out anyone reading the comments!
How about some Emerald run with two Pokémon so you can do all the double battles properly? I suggest Nincada + Surskit because the stats are hilarious. I'm also suggesting you try out the Dragon Monster Quest series!
No complaints about the sponsorship because you present it in such a genuine way. I appreciate how it isn't scripted and it is your real perspective on the product.
I finished the video: He didn't need to grind so much to 70. He should have changed certain Pokemon, like Rapidash and Brozong or even Pachirusu for more valuable ones. Specially from underground. A lv 55-60 with good moves for certain would be better than that Rapidash with no coverages. The sad part is that now he has a bad impression about this game because he didn't play it smart. When actually this game is amazing for challenges due to great amount of good Pokemon it has. He even missed the lucky egg.
@@PetyrC90 Considering the game can be played an endless number of ways the "answer" can be whatever you want it to be. Also, I'd advocate for rare candy use even if he wasn't hard grinding, just to speed things up
@@MrMakoto2 If you want to cheat with rare candies to speed things,so just cheat to finish the game. You are completely missing the point of doing a challenge by using cheats. Challenges are fun because they are rewarding to beat. Learn about a thing for life: things feel good because they are hard and that is what makes them valuable. Also, if your answer is to use rare candies, you wont force yourself to think about smart solutions.
26:44 the bit may be weird, but I liked it :) I've been playing Portal Reloaded, which is a fan mod that introduces a Time portal. Now THAT messes with your head, lol.
25:03 MDB please hear my story I was in the very same position as you, last year I was going to do a Shield Ground Monotype run with a Shiny GMax Silicobra as my starter but I quickly and painfully learned that I couldn’t trade on a extra account because of no online, I had to reach out to my very limited pool of friends, luckily we were able to do the trade and I had fun. I actually bought a Switch Lite for this very reason for future Pokémon games
@@robertlupa8273 The crazy thing is that there will be times where I will need two copies of one of the same games in order to do more of these special runs Like I’m currently doing a SP fighting type mono on my main switch and I needed a second copy of the game to trade over a Heracross egg from the main Diamond into a temporary switch lite to put it in my main switch pearl BECAUSE WE DO NOT HAVE HOME COMPATIBILITY NOR WONDERTRADE These are the struggles of the enthusiastic Pokémon professional
25:42 You can circumvent that pretty easily. Just open Pokemon Home on your main Switch account and go to pokemon. Then click on your account above connected games and change to the challenge account. After that you can transfer pokemon to pokemon home like normal.
@@maxspecs There are no gyms in Alola. As for Let's Go, you are just required to bring in a certain Pokémon for each gym though you aren't being forced to use it
For future reference you don't need multiple Nintendo accounts for Home. When you are on the game select screen you can actually go up to your profile, and switch between profiles from there. That said, Home doesn't yet work with BDSP so it was still not going to happen.
The friendship survival thing was introduced back in gen 6. It was so glitched early on that if you had maxed friendship your pokemon could have the ability trigger multiple times in a row. It happened to me back in gen 7 with one of the island challenge pokemon.
(Bit this comment is responding to starts about 25:04) About Pokemon Home and multiple profiles on the Switch, as long as you access Pokemon Home from the profile that has the Nintendo account attached to it, Pokemon Home can interact with all compatible Pokemon save files on all profiles on the console. BDSP isn't compatible with Pokemon Home yet, so it doesn't matter for this run, but it's knowledge to keep in mind for the future.
Many players had a really hard time with Cynthia without the extra challenges you applied to yourself. Going in blind like that it's no wonder you had such a hard time with that fight.
Cynthia is a beast! Her Milotic shut down my team with its ability giving it a defense boost and it having a huge Sp.Def stat. Also, this game has such limiting options for Ice Types, but you did a great job and had a really creative team
I actually challenged myself by playing brilliant diamond by playing as a ground pokemon trainer and man that milotic can be so much harder than garchomp also Lucian setting up trick room is scary which surprised me since usually ground pokemon are usually slow
25:03 I know this video is a year old, but it still never ceases to send me to tears when my eyes flicker to the text "Machoke seems like it wants to be petted..." meanwhile there's a lopunny on the other end of the battlefield. Why do I feel like there's already distasteful art of this?
So apparently BDSP has levels balanced around the original exp system, except for the Elite Four, who are balanced for the exp share you can't turn off and have AI designed to do competitive strats (Some of which are banned!). In case you're still wondering why the end of the game was insane. I wouldn't touch BDSP challenge runs for this reason.
@@pixel3042 Gen 4 Garchomp was banned solely because its only ability gave it evasion, which is banned no matter what. it wasn't until gen 5 gave it rough skin when it was unbanned (though it might've still been too strong, I don't remember)
Evasion has been a go-to for challenge in the games ever since Gen 1. Notable jerks include Lt Serge in Pokemon Stadium’s gym tower, and the only gym leader in Pokemon Coliseum’s story mode.
Rule suggestion: remove the option that it tells you if you'd like to swap out your pokemon so if you want to swap you have to at least take one rough hit upon swapping.

X and Y, actually.
You're right, my bad.
Still suggesting the thematic run of the Wormadam trio starring Mothim .

Thank you for all your content - seriously, it's neat
That's pretty neat!
I have a really good feeling about this one! Naturally I'm curious, which fossil did you pick? I can't tell because the video hasn't been released yet XD.
Skull fossil, it's the only one he can get(in gen 4 it's by version)
He can’t actually pick the fossil, the fossil isn’t even mandatory.
I love how people are taking this seriously XD I'm serious that I'll enjoy it, but you're gotta just have fun with the meme everyone
there have been rumors he might just be using the same helixfossil video footage in each video to safe time. going with this i guess it will be helix again
@@simon4952 he’s disapproved that on a few occasions
Next time, you can use the vs seeker. Some trainers level up. And two near the trophy garden will make you incredibly rich. You just have to put up with spinning your stick for 100 steps (preferably on your bike). It's pretty automatic for me at this point. 8 or so spin by my character on the bike, use vs seeker, if no response, repeat. No need to exit the route or anything like that. Also, Snowpoint Underground, I think, has a lucky egg.
They can't make a good game but they sure can make an aggravating one. Good job, ILCA.
"In two weeks, on Feb 19th" Uh... it's March 5th, right? I'll blame this one on Cynthia.
Isn't this the game that gave the elite four and Cynthia nearly perfect competitive teams? This is gonna be fun
@@jaxsonbateman I don't know if Gym Leaders got gassed up any. Ice Gym still has a damn Snorunt, after all.
The border around the thumbnail stands out so much compared to the other ones. The blue definitely pops more than yellow.

Roserade is one of my favourites so nice to see it
Good see you’re doing a Gen 8 game, comments are good for our lord and saviour the UA-cam algorithm
Dear MDB, I just want to let you know that you're one of the youtubers who inspired me to make my own pokemon challenges videos! Great vid, as always!
This but ninjask + shedninja-
11:01 Funny looking Machop.
“I’m sure I’ll be able to win this”
I thought so too in a mono ground run but I had to use like 20 different drugs
I hope you meant in-game drugs (X Items, vitamins, etc.)
@@robertlupa8273 can i say no comment? lol.
it was pretty easy to stack x items against spiritomb with a mamoswine starting with special defends
No complaints about the sponsorship because you present it in such a genuine way. I appreciate how it isn't scripted and it is your real perspective on the product.
I love when MDB confidently says the first 3 elite four members will be a breeze lol.
Meanwhile I said "I think Flint is gonna be tough... or Aaron." and then he gets wrecked by Aaron. :D
41:39 Roserade is Level 69. Nice.
I finished the video:
He didn't need to grind so much to 70.
This comment needs more likes so that he can see it.
To add onto this, I'm always an advocate on cheating in rare candies just to cut out the no skill grinding in challenge runs. Saves a bunch of time.
@@MrMakoto2 No bro, we can't agree on this..
Also, grinding is not Always the answer. As it wasnt in this run.
Marked my Calendar for February 19th 2023. Can’t wait for that video!
I will still be asking for an Emerald Spheal only run. He's simply too adorable not to.
26:44 the bit may be weird, but I liked it :)
I've been playing Portal Reloaded, which is a fan mod that introduces a Time portal. Now THAT messes with your head, lol.

MDB please hear my story
I was in the very same position as you, last year I was going to do a Shield Ground Monotype run with a Shiny GMax Silicobra as my starter but I quickly and painfully learned that I couldn’t trade on a extra account because of no online, I had to reach out to my very limited pool of friends, luckily we were able to do the trade and I had fun. I actually bought a Switch Lite for this very reason for future Pokémon games
The good ending.
@@robertlupa8273 The crazy thing is that there will be times where I will need two copies of one of the same games in order to do more of these special runs
Like I’m currently doing a SP fighting type mono on my main switch and I needed a second copy of the game to trade over a Heracross egg from the main Diamond into a temporary switch lite to put it in my main switch pearl BECAUSE WE DO NOT HAVE HOME COMPATIBILITY NOR WONDERTRADE
These are the struggles of the enthusiastic Pokémon professional
@@TheFlashzap Q_Q
25:42 You can circumvent that pretty easily.
Just open Pokemon Home on your main Switch account and go to pokemon.
Then click on your account above connected games and change to the challenge account.
After that you can transfer pokemon to pokemon home like normal.
Oh damn.
You like skipped two whole generations.
I wonder how a Gen 7 run would go
He wouldn’t be able to get a single gym badge ;3
@@maxspecs There are no gyms in Alola.
As for Let's Go, you are just required to bring in a certain Pokémon for each gym though you aren't being forced to use it

I think ya missed the joke
Better luck next time
@@midnightlanterns I KNOW THAT DUDE.
I'm still saying Let's Go has gyms
For future reference you don't need multiple Nintendo accounts for Home. When you are on the game select screen you can actually go up to your profile, and switch between profiles from there. That said, Home doesn't yet work with BDSP so it was still not going to happen.
The friendship survival thing was introduced back in gen 6. It was so glitched early on that if you had maxed friendship your pokemon could have the ability trigger multiple times in a row. It happened to me back in gen 7 with one of the island challenge pokemon.
It wasn't as bad in gen 6,7 & 8.In BDSP,It's so broken that I had to use friendship-lowering items like energy root.
(Bit this comment is responding to starts about 25:04)
About Pokemon Home and multiple profiles on the Switch, as long as you access Pokemon Home from the profile that has the Nintendo account attached to it, Pokemon Home can interact with all compatible Pokemon save files on all profiles on the console.
“Bronzong toughed it out so you wouldn’t feel sad!”
Just for you, Bronzong. I’ll tough it out just for you.😔
the friendship mechanic that caused bronzong to survive is something that existed since 6th gen
It was not passive before 8th gen

Don't forget the Focus Sash and Quick Attack.
@@ThatguycalledJoe Ha, nice joke!

I know this video is a year old, but it still never ceases to send me to tears when my eyes flicker to the text "Machoke seems like it wants to be petted..." meanwhile there's a lopunny on the other end of the battlefield.
The Elite Four is also built competitively with items, near perfect IVs, and almost full EVS.
Cynthia actually does have a perfect competitive team.
And Flint uses a competitively-illegal Drifblim.
And Cynthia has a para-flinch Togekiss in her later teams.
cynthia's garchomp set was actually banned for multiple generations
@@pixel3042 Gen 4 Garchomp was banned solely because its only ability gave it evasion, which is banned no matter what. it wasn't until gen 5 gave it rough skin when it was unbanned (though it might've still been too strong, I don't remember)
Evasion has been a go-to for challenge in the games ever since Gen 1. Notable jerks include Lt Serge in Pokemon Stadium’s gym tower, and the only gym leader in Pokemon Coliseum’s story mode.
Thrilled you are branching into the Gen 8 games! This was a fun change of pace! Keep it up!
Rule suggestion: remove the option that it tells you if you'd like to swap out your pokemon so if you want to swap you have to at least take one rough hit upon swapping.
As if Cynthia wasn't tough enough.
Seeing the electric squirrel in the video is enough to give I a like. Seeing it in the final team, showed earn you a Nobel peace prize! XD
I'm gonna tell you right now, that Budew moveset is literally identical to its original moveset in the D/P/Pt
Now this is long one. I'm very happy with that.

I am very looking forward to this challenge especially the battle against cynthia
Nice, glad to catch a premier, excited to see how you deal with a challenge like this because it seems a little outside your comfort zone.
Did anyone tell him that they reworked the grand underground in this game so you can get a lot of high level Pokemon very early
Maybe he thought that would make things too easy? It's very simple to lvl grind there after all.
Very well done doing this run not knowing about the super cynthia team, awesome vid as always. Been loving the 7 days to die stuff and all the challenges and cant wait for more ☺
I have a challenge that is is most likely extremely hard: specifically shield with only phantump and pumpkaboo, 2 gen 6 grass ghost types that evolve via trade
Newer Games are a lot more interesting imo, i think the grind is just from this challenge and not an issue with newer games
B-B-BRILLIANT Diamond?! Well, that's a new one. I wonder how the league will go.
