His challenges are “Can I” not “if” He makes it a challenge to himself to make these videos. He puts himself on a one week time limit to push these videos out weekly while making other videos. He doesn’t even use speed-up during the grinds and still gets it out by the end of the week. The titles aren’t “Can you beat Pokémon red with your rivals team” or “If you can beat Pokémon red with your rivals team”-it’s “ *Can* *I* beat Pokémon red with your rivals team”
@@diamondborealis454 you are making a strong point for MDB and I support what you are saying. Actually, I was annoyed by myself, when I realized how I formulated, as it’s not what it says in the title. Still, my point (not in response to you, but generally) is: The videos would in no way be less credible or entertaining, if he would be using a tool to speed up the grinds. Cause it’s not a speed run of any sort. (It also does not say: Can I beat [game] [handicap] in 1 week or less.) So I do not see a point in telling him: “Do not use speed up! It’s less credible.” It just isn’t.
If you're interested in more varied team runs, I'd love to see an Eeveelutions run. You can pick any game you want, so long as Eevee are readily available to fill out your team via breeding or catching in the wild

9:56 “our Growlithe’s rival” feels like a mistake, but also fits strangely well. After all, it makes sense that if you and your rival had the same Pokémon, they would develop a rivalry with one another.
This was great! I'd love to see more runs like this. Seeing full teams is really fun, as there's a lot more variety than that single Pokemon runs. As far as speeding up goes, I think you should go for it if it enables you to do more interesting runs. The challenge I like seeing is about the strategy and research, not whether or not you have the patience to grind outa million levels.
Rhydon was the MVP of the team, with Arcanine a close second. They're too OP. Regarding the speed-up option, do whatever you feel is right for you. Since you don't do speedruns, just go for it and save time for the long grinding sessions. I love your content and challenge runs, man, thanks for this video!

Speed up for the grind makes sense imo, also for battles on challenges like the shuckle one. It shouldnt be the default maybe imo? but it should always be there when it stops being fun. Fun is the point c: As for this challenge it was fun hehe, I do think you shouldve used the randomiser so both you and blue had the same starter tho
Definitely use the speedup for grinding pokemon, but not battles so you don't accidently use a move you didn't want to and losing a good run for no reason.
You could have used the Randomizer option that allows impossible evolutions. That way you would have Alakazam at LVL 37. You use the Randomizer for other challenges anyway so no problem there, I guess. BTW, can you do a challenge where you choose the Dome fossil? Can you? 🤨
I bet he'd say he considers that cheating, though I personally don't agree, as it's just a more convinient version of trade-trade back you can do on real hardware with two consoles. Also *hail the Dome Fossil*
I think I remember seeing MDB choose the Dome fossil one time while saying that he chose the helix fossil, but I could be remembering a different challenge runner do that while using the MDB gag. I could be wrong because I watch an average of 10 challenge runs a week. At some point it gets hard to keep track of what you have watched by which you-tuber. I definitely want to see the comment section explode if he states that he’s taking the Dome fossil
I finally, f i n a l l y, made it to the end of MDB's Pokemon challenge playlist. I'm a little sad because I can't binge these anymore, but I have a whole channel's worth of videos to watch so that's fun!
I won’t give up. I wanna see Gen 4 with only Sableye. I wanna see the worst ability in the game at play. In exchange, you get no weaknesses, 380 BST, and moves like Shadow Claw, Feint Attack, Power Gem, Zen Headbutt, and Confuse Ray.
He might as well try beating the game with a whole team of "useless" Pokémon, like Sableye. Hoppip and its evolutions come to mind because of the ice gym.
@@thenorfnonly3486 I've used Sableye in my first Emerald playrthrough and I must say: as nice as having no weaknesses is, beyond the early gams Sableye isn't gonna pull its weight very often, even with physical Shadow Ball.
Since the very first Pokémon challenge I watched of yours (around 18 months ago) I was angry that you DIDN’T speed up for your own sake. You’re a creative dude who deserves to use that time you’d save for things you love, and to continue making great content :)
I think it's perfectly fine to use speedup as often as you want to. It eases the frustration on you, and it allows you to get challenges out faster which doubles as both a way to get crazier challenges like this more often, and allows you to NOT work through your days off, as you seem to be doing a lot. Speedup all the way!
I watched this man clear Crystal with only one Sunkern, but this team? I dunno man. What I do know is that this is Week 28 of asking for Pokemon Sapphire with only one Absol. Alright, I forgot about Gen 1 AI.
For the longest time I had no idea what all those videos that said in the 1st gen psychic was immune to ghost were talking about. Because I clearly remember having a Haunter and using ghost attacks in Sabrina's gym - because of the tv series telling me that ghost was strong against psychic. And just now on the German Pokemon Wiki I read that night shade can hit psychic as well as normal types in gen 1. It was night shade that I had used all this time.
Honestly, I've been advocating for speed up whenever it's come up, but if you don't want to use it all the time, then using it during grinding sessions is completely reasonable, especially for multiple pokemon runs.
That final Rival win legit reminds me of a win I did as a child in FireRed. I only had my starter super trained (a Blastoise) but, at the champion, I had lost my Blastoise to his Venusaur. So, I needed to send in my severely underleveled Pidgeotto to hope for a win. And I did! Because he was in a Solar Beam loop while I was using Fly. On the turns he would release, I was in the air! It was beautiful.
You deserve extra free time, hit that speed up for the long grinds, but be careful not to overlevel, since with speed up it can be seen as the easy option

It's impossible to please everyone, but I personally have no problem with speed up. However, I will say that I admire the fact you've refrained thus far. You've done this long enough that I say it's up to you. Only you could understand the grinds, what seems like a fair 5 level grind vs a ridiculous 20 level grind in the first patch of grass of the game.
I can’t believe I’ve been watching your weekly challenge videos for as long as I have. Time flies. I think it’s fine if you use speed up while grinding. You should do more of these types of runs with using gym leaders teams. Also enjoying the Pokémon TCG run!
So few things. One use speed up man, you have worked your ass off for so long you've earned it man! Second, for challenges like this, use the impossible evolution function of the randomizer, it's a great function that would make these runs more authentic. Third, you're my favorite Pokémon challenge runner, much love homie
"Do you think I should start using speedup in these challenges, and how frequently?" Yes, definitely. There are loads of advantages, including completing the challenge faster, make grinding sessions more bearable (like seriously, who goes through 95 LEVELUPS at regular speed without losing its mind), etc. There also some side effects too. Given that using speedup you can complete these faster, you could have more videos at the ready in less time, having more content in the process. As for frequency, I'd say you use it all the time. Its pros far outweigh its cons imo. "But it is cheating" So using the Doduo/Dodrio GB tower in Stadium is also cheating? I'll gladly keep my sanity, thank you very much

I actually didn't realise that you weren't speeding the games up when you play. You should absolutely do it! All that grinding is such a time suck and it must surely be way more enjoyable to speed up games you've played hundreds of times.
hey mah-dry-bread I've been watching your challenges for a couple years now and since you asked in the video, I think you should use speed up on long grinds so you can stop working on your days off. You deserve those days off for all the great content you've made and the daily videos for 10 years
I fully support you speeding up the game MDB. These videos will be entertaining whether or not you use the feature, and you're not competing against anyone so there's no harm in it at all. Those people telling you that speeding up the game is "cheating" are dummies.
Please don’t spend an ungodly amount of time grinding when you can speed up. The Magikarp and Wabufet videos are some of my favorite, but I’m not going to stop watching you for using speed up. If you can do more creative runs, I’m all for it.
Do speed up, man. I've been watching you from the beginning and know the grinds have been insane. To be clear, I vote speed up for the whole game. Whatever keeps you sane and producing quality content. Keep up the great work! 👌
See this is one of those rare times where cheating and using a pro code to get the alakazam ins't cheating so much as simply overcoming a technological failing brought on by obsolecence in the game. when the game was made you most definetly could have traded for an alakazam, because its not possible anymore isn't the players fault its a failure in the games overarching design. So I would say its still well within the spirit of this challenge to use the code and get alakazam at the appropriate time in the game you would have gotten it as the challenge isn't "Can I get the same team as Blue" It's can I beat the game with Blues team.
Yeah. He absolutely doesnt need to cheat. Spin up Pokemon Stadium emulator, copy your red save and load it into slot 1 and 2. Trade in stadium and your guy evolves. It have the same OT too so its not even recognized as a trade so levels up normally.
At least you pointed out the fact that there is an EXP. All in gen 1, that got replaced by the EXP. Share held item in gens 2-5, that then got replaced with the currant EXP. Share, which should be named EXP. All. I'm tired of people bemoaning the fact that gen 6 made the EXP share party wide when Gen 1 did it first.
I'd do speed up, especially if it makes more gen 5 runs possible, since I know grinding in those games is awful. People who say no speed up are honestly that class of elitist that think they make all the rules, that anything that isn't a hardcore nuzlocke is unworthy, and mostly seek to ruin the fun for everyone else if a run didn't fit their specific wants and needs.
Great video! I'm so glad you're back to longer runs now you're not doing the daily upload. Your runs are really fun, so it's nice not to have them feel rushed :D Regarding speed up, hey it's your videos, you're providing the entertainment, it's your call! Whatever's easier man!
Love the vid mdfingb! On the speed setting id say its fair game, id just ask you to not use it if you are playing a challenge on a game you havent yet(like sun and moon) on major plot points. Other than that, please use it, its gonna save u some sanity
Use speedup whenever you want! It will give you more time to relax while doing the same number of videos. Whenever I play any of these older Pokemon games, i play at least at 2x speed most of the time because walking feels painfully slow after they added running.
Just one of those Gen 1 things. Very few non-gym-leader NPCs are coded to have any TM moves. So almost everybody (barring weird things like Lance' Barrier-Dragonite) just have whatever their 4 most-recent level up moves are. Hence why the rival's growlite loses roar, just to get it back as Arcanine
For speedup I say 2x and 4x are fine since you can officially do those with Game Boy Tower in Stadium. Also, I'm pretty sure enemy trainers never have any stat XP.
Speed up totally free use after you have 8 badges since all you're doing is grinding before the elite 4 and possibly during the elite 4 if you lose one. In my opinion.

Can't wait for this same challenge in the next 4 generations. Gen 2 and 3 will be brutal. Even if you pick Wally instead of May.
These challenges are not “how fast”, but “if”. That’s all there is to say.
His challenges are “Can I” not “if”
He makes it a challenge to himself to make these videos.

Agree! I want to see Eeveelutions only runs -- one for each generation where there is a new Eeveelution.
I know in the past he said the eeveelutions were too strong to make an interesting challenge but I think he said he’d consider a 1 eevee run
@@FrostyFyre
He's done a few solo Eevee challenges to this point actually, but yeah eeveelutions only would be insanely easy
@@LordLucario12 that's right, it's been a while lol
Literally, use speedup as much as you want my man. Make those grinds less painful for yourself. If you feel you have something to make up for, just do challenges like this a bit often. Half the grinding time is a really good production boost!
I don’t see a problem with speeding up long grinds. It’s been years now, you deserve it.

There's a TM for flamethrower and fire blast in celadon city.
@@dakotashroom5401 Not in Gen 1, there isn't. Flamethrower isn't a TM in Gen 1 at all, and Fire Blast is the TM that Blaine gives.
"This challenge wasn't too hard to research too!" He says, while missing the solar beam TM that could have saved him 20 levels of grinding
also, the second Growlithe learned leer, he could've bought a TM for Take down and evolved it. Same with Rhydon.
@@dawnsbuneary Why is there a TM for Take Down?
@@robertlupa8273 Because Gen 1 is a mess.
@@robertlupa8273 Because there's a TM for Dream Eater and the only pokemon who can learn it are Drowzee/Hypno, the ghost(s), and Mew.
There is also a TM for Softboiled and only Chansey & Mew can learn it.
Egg Bomb's TM is pretty limited too; Chansey, Exeggcute/Exeggcutor & Mew.
None of the fossil pokemon can use the Rock Slide TM, which means they can't learn any Rock moves.
@@doomswell a.k.a. Gen 1 moment
9:56 “our Growlithe’s rival” feels like a mistake, but also fits strangely well. After all, it makes sense that if you and your rival had the same Pokémon, they would develop a rivalry with one another.
Everyone, give a big round of applause to recognize the real MVPs of this run, Arcanine and Rhydon.
That Rhydon play was incredible! The switch from Leer to Tail Whip against Exeggutor was breathtaking, I wish I thought of that
I would like to see more runs like these!! I always love seeing multiple Pokémon during these runs!
An interesting idea for a challenge would be gen 5 with only deerling. It’s about as strong as a first form starter.
That would be fun, but... Doin a low base stat pokemon run in gen 5 is kinda... Annoying. Because of the way of level up and experience works that is
@@Gallarday ya i think for gen 5 it has to be a team atlest
How about,

Oooo, how about Pokemon Black/White with Bianca's Team?

Would love to see this challenge
Or why not as N, iirc, his team changes throughout the game.
@@borderlinebear5509 Pretty sure it's impossible to get a Zoroark without events in BW, and N uses one in his final battle.
@@robertlupa8273 Maybe replacing the starter with the randomizer?
So when does MDB do an Avatar: The Last Onix Trainer run? Serpentine Pokemon only, no type overlap, and all must be named "___ Onix".
I'd say all except Onix. That should be something like Rock Arbok.
But Earth Onix is a pretty metal name and would allow evolving to Steelix)
Then you have Water Onix, Grass Onix and... Thunder Onix? (Eelectric)
We need this.
That's the problem.
Four of the serpentine Pokémon have type overlap. Sandaconda and Steelix are both Ground while Arbok and Seviper are both Poison.
@@goldenhydreigon4727 Serperior is also a thing.
Getting a 4th slot of a different type either requires compromising on Fully Evolved Status (Dragonair is useable, but it ain't strong) or really stretching the definition of serpentine (Eelectric forex)
Haven't watched one of these in a while but this one seemed interesting. Amazing to see the fossil joke still going.
I think you'd be safest keeping speed up to grinds such as the one at the end of this run but I, personally, wouldn't care if you used speed up while travelling or not, whatever works best for you, MDB
Love the pfp! Pan wooper!
Heya MDB I think speed up is totally fine for travel and grinding, it doesn’t detract anything from the viewers’ experience imho.

I really reeeaaaallly enjoyed this run. It was so interesting seeing a specific team from another trainer. Would love to see others like that!
Rhydon really clutched this run out. Imagine not having him?! Don't think this would have been possible...
Speed up for the grind makes sense imo, also for battles on challenges like the shuckle one. It shouldnt be the default maybe imo? but it should always be there when it stops being fun. Fun is the point c:
As for this challenge it was fun hehe, I do think you shouldve used the randomiser so both you and blue had the same starter tho
i had the same thought. like swap squirtle for bulbasaur so you both have mirror teams. still fun to watch as usual
Definitely use the speedup for grinding pokemon, but not battles so you don't accidently use a move you didn't want to and losing a good run for no reason.
Speedup should be used when grinding lvls but not for other parts love the content and thanks for asking for our input
You could have used the Randomizer option that allows impossible evolutions. That way you would have Alakazam at LVL 37.
You use the Randomizer for other challenges anyway so no problem there, I guess.
BTW, can you do a challenge where you choose the Dome fossil? Can you? 🤨
Dome fossil superiority
I bet he'd say he considers that cheating, though I personally don't agree, as it's just a more convinient version of trade-trade back you can do on real hardware with two consoles.
Also *hail the Dome Fossil*
@@captaincriticize8050 true
I think I remember seeing MDB choose the Dome fossil one time while saying that he chose the helix fossil, but I could be remembering a different challenge runner do that while using the MDB gag. I could be wrong because I watch an average of 10 challenge runs a week. At some point it gets hard to keep track of what you have watched by which you-tuber. I definitely want to see the comment section explode if he states that he’s taking the Dome fossil
@@captaincriticize8050 Heathen!
I finally, f i n a l l y, made it to the end of MDB's Pokemon challenge playlist. I'm a little sad because I can't binge these anymore, but I have a whole channel's worth of videos to watch so that's fun!
I really like this one. Feels like a fresh and interesting challenge. Also, go Dome Fossil!
I’m waiting for that day he gets Dome fossil but that’ll never happen lol.

@@ominousshadows1417 Yup.
@@thenorfnonly3486 that's just torture 😭😭
For a second I thought you were talking about Crystal Clear, the supposedly amazing romhack.
Oh sick, this is going to be a good one! If this works out, you should challenge yourself and do a run with Bruno’s team
You get an onix and you get an onix and you ...
24:50 "despite being 9 levels lower"
Me, sees an 11 level difference
You deserve extra free time, hit that speed up for the long grinds, but be careful not to overlevel, since with speed up it can be seen as the easy option
I'd love to see a follow-up of this, with the rival's team in the remakes (FireRed/LeafGreen)
Would love to see a series of these through the generations, at least up until Emerald, super fun challenge concept!
So just two more?
On our way through, I took the helix fossil. I knew if I didn’t say what I took you’d all ask. Actually now that I think about it everyone ask anyway. Comments are good for the UA-cam algorithm.

I reckon a sick challenge would be in gen 4 the least amount of steps to beat the game, with the poke walker app to see how many steps you have taken
So few things.
One use speed up man, you have worked your ass off for so long you've earned it man!
Second, for challenges like this, use the impossible evolution function of the randomizer, it's a great function that would make these runs more authentic.
Third, you're my favorite Pokémon challenge runner, much love homie
"Do you think I should start using speedup in these challenges, and how frequently?"
Yes, definitely.
"But it is cheating"
So using the Doduo/Dodrio GB tower in Stadium is also cheating? I'll gladly keep my sanity, thank you very much
I’d love to see a run on heart gold or soulsilver. Never since it done
I am several months late to some of these videos and getting caught up in the middle of the night with our new daughter. I gotta say that the rhydon bit at the elite four was fantastic and hilarious. Thanks mdb.
Loved this video. When it comes to speed-up, I think that you should do what makes your life easier. I also think it would allow you to do crazier challenges without worrying about time constraints.
As for a challenge idea, I'd love to see this with Cynthia's team from Platinum.
I'd personally use speed-up during longer grinds and long travel segments of the game.
I really think the extra days off has done wonders for you! Your voice and demeanour in your pokemon challengers seems more energetic!
I for one am totally fine with you using speed up, espescially if it leads to more harder challenges and a happier you!
From the looks of this, this might be my favourite one yet
We’ll get a heartgold or soul silver challenge run some day… I’m holding out hope…

I actually didn't realise that you weren't speeding the games up when you play. You should absolutely do it! All that grinding is such a time suck and it must surely be way more enjoyable to speed up games you've played hundreds of times.
You should allow speedups for grinding, it's good for the youtube algorithm. I loved that Rhydon beatdown btw xD
The thumbnail is the best thing ever. Blue looks so smug with his wack rhydon.

- When? > During tedious grinds.
- OK but what does tedious mean? > When grinding goes from being fun to being a chore.
hey mah-dry-bread I've been watching your challenges for a couple years now and since you asked in the video, I think you should use speed up on long grinds so you can stop working on your days off.

Of course you know your rival can beat the game. He's already champion by the time you make it to him!
It would be really cool to do runs with trade evolutions! there are a lot of Pokemons we never get the chance to see (you could use the randomizer)
Plus there are at least a few emulators which allow you to trade with yourself
Honestly would be interesting to see if you could beat R/S/E with May/Brendan’s team just due to how bad they are
Great video! I'm so glad you're back to longer runs now you're not doing the daily upload. Your runs are really fun, so it's nice not to have them feel rushed :D
Regarding speed up, hey it's your videos, you're providing the entertainment, it's your call!
I really liked this concept, one of the coolest ones yet. Yeah it's not as difficult as some of the others but the gimmick made it worthwhile.

Also, I'm pretty sure enemy trainers never have any stat XP.
Holy shit I couldn't stop laughing at that Rhydon commentary lmao omg
Speed up totally free use after you have 8 badges since all you're doing is grinding before the elite 4 and possibly during the elite 4 if you lose one. In my opinion.
