Hey MDB do an ORAS run with 1 swablu!!!!!
Do you like bread
Can you please do Pokémon black with just Munna!
Pokemon Yellow with only Ditto!
Mah-Dry please make a challenge with Ponyta. Its my favourite fire type and it deserves a challenge.
When your goal is to create a new challenge every week, I think using speed up will immensely lessen your workload and give you more time. There's no shame in rushing past the boring bits of a game you've already beaten 20+ times. Work smarter, not harder.
I think it's more on principle at this point, he prob won't feel satisfied if he does speed up
I would personally use the rare candy glitch for this sort of grinding, especially if you have no plan on using Pokémon (like the rhydon)
He has already explained a MULTITUDE of times on why he doesn’t speed up.
While he’s mindlessly grinding he can work on other videos.
He’s a multitasker and has fun and enjoys doing it.
man has explained why he doesnt speed up, a plus, he's a man of principle, mans been doing daily uploads for ten years, fortitude of a rock, and hey, he can watch stuff while grinding
@@vibin576 Bro, MDB FUCKING ASKED FOR PEOPLE'S OPINION.
Honestly, I'd say speed up should be your choice. If speed up makes a run, such as this, more bearable due to grinding then go for it
+
I agree, if it saves him time so he can relax more, which he deserves, just so he can do things he enjoys doing then he should use speed up as much as he wants
Yeah man. We love ur runs for the Ideas. Speeding it up or not doesnt make a difference
Agreed
As long as the important battles are in regular speed, he can speed up as much as he wants, especially those grinds are tough in normal speed
I would approve of using the "change impossible evolutions" option on the randomizer
+1 in support of using speed up whenever you want!
For a challenge, seeing as how he's always comically bad in these gen 1 runs, how about beating Pokemon Red with Blaine's exact team?
The poor guy already doesn't use speed up, he doesn't need that additional pain
@@PTJ6969 Other than monotype, there's not much wrong with Blaine's team, he's just bad
Honestly just use speed up whenever you want, especially during long grinding sessions or just Gen 4 in general tbh lol
Agree with this.
^^^^^
I don't think he's gonna listen, since he's so used to not using speed-up, but at least he's fine with others doing it.
Yup. Personally when playing Pokemon these days I use speedup when doing grids. It doesn't make the game easier, it just saves you time.
Use any speed up, more content is better. As long as you are playing, any speed is fine. We all (I mean your loyal fans, aka people who watch flash trash, let’s plays etc.) probably prefer just more MDB and more videos or more quality MDB.
The last thing any of us want is you to burn out or less MDB. You do you, have fun, make videos and bring good content and do what you enjoy.
Only don’t do speed up if it makes you feel weird to do it, but I and most others think it’s perfectly fine.
To the speed up question, please please do it. No one benefits from you spending more real life time grinding in runs, I think the community would be pleased overall to know your getting time back - bonus, as more let's plays return, this added time will be greatly appreciated by you and your viewers.
Exactly my thoughts. He'll have more time to invest in whatever he wants.
you're not even considering the epilepsy risk for those that have it?? speeding up often with the emulator (and possibly editing but i know he slows the editing speed ups down enough) would probably cause an epilepsy episode for those people with it.
@@christoperaaron8218 ?
I believe NPCs in most games have 0 stat XP/EVs. In R/B/Y, they literally give trainers wild pokemon with the 4 most recent learnable moves as their moveset
I remember I've read all trainers have 100 stat xp in HP and attack but 0 in everything else
Everyone gangsta until the elite 4 in BDSP has perfect EVs and Cynthia has a team that's actually viable in competitive
@@LamerGuyand the scarlet and violet one ups that in having actual viable doubles strats and fully ev trained teams
Speed-up for long grinds just makes sense. Same area, same music, usually same move being used to level-up. In my opinion, grinding isn't playing the game, certainly not an aspect of any game that creators intend for you to enjoy.
And weather. Gen 4s rain animation alone makes speed up worth it
Honestly, just speed up whenever you want. Personally, I only use the speed up on the emulator when I am grinding, but I wont blame you if you decide to use speed up all the time, since you bring these out like once a week.
I agree. I like the dedication of no speed up, But on the huge grinds I 100% think you should use it. Time is a valuable asset😂
Honestly for the sake of grinding I don’t see any issue with speed up, just cuts down on a lot of frustrating grinding time and could maybe let you take that other day off without spending it grinding😂
+
I agree with this, plus if you don't show speed up, no one will know? It's weird that people think it was cheating...people are really weird.
It has never been 'cheating' to use a speed option on an emulator, those who say it is are pretty dumb. It doesn't change the difficulty, it doesn't let you skip areas, it doesn't change the dialogue, it can't make you get pokemon you wouldn't have access to vanilla, doesn't change the xp amounts you receive, so all it does is change the amount of IRL time you spend on a project. Please for the love of yourself start using the speed up function on your grinds at bare minimum, you will have more time for yourself.
For real. He could even use rare candies. It is only grinding, and like you said, it just saves RL time without having any effect on the game
But what about the argument "creators of the game intented players to grind and for it to take time"?
@@ekos8282 I personally don't think grinding was really meant to be a big part of the game. I don't think I've ever had to grind in a non-challenge run of a game. And if I ever did, it definitely wasn't 90 levels worth
@@inderdeepsingh5498 I ask because I am going to try Battle factory in gen IV on emulator and ask if speeding it up is ok. I have tried it normally and it is super low.
@@ekos8282 if it makes it more fun then go for it. There's no rules
You should have used the Universal Pokemon Randomizer to allow Kadabra to evolve into Alakazam to keep the run authentic.
Can't wait for this same challenge in the next 4 generations. Gen 2 and 3 will be brutal. Even if you pick Wally instead of May.
I can't get over the Champions moveset, it boggles my mind
I've been replaying FireRed and LeafGreen lately, and one thing that came to mind was how forgiving it is. I kept sequence breaking LeafGreen thanks to trades from FireRed, and the game was fine with it.
LOL, hi Pat.
Yeah, the champion moveset is absolute dogwater.
believe it or not but all trainers pokemon use the last four moves that the pokemon would have at their level, the only exception being a single tm move that might be given to them, which is why a lot of trainers have awful movesets, especially pokemon that evolved by stone like raichu.
Hi,you look a lot like a real version of Linguini of Ratatatoille.
@@EsoiTheGrumpyMawile That's why Blue's Exeggutor has only Barrage, Hypnosis and... some other garbage non-stab move.
I absolutely think you should be allowed to use speed up while grinding. It doesn’t effect the difficulty level of if you can beat the game under the set of rules you have or not, all it does is save you time. I’m sure if you made a poll that an overwhelming amount of people would agree that you should be allowed to use speed up.
It was like 93% of people who voted they’re okay with speeding up on a the poll during the premiere of the video
+
I love how in spite of saying you wouldn't use Rhydon, you still forced yourself to. Please feel free to use speedup as often as you want imo.
MDB: *Making fun of the rival for using whirlwind in a trainer battle at 7:32 *
Also MDB: 4:28
I think it's perfectly fine to use speed up whenever you're grinding. It's not like it's something anyone wants to experience - it's just a necessity of the challenge. And if that makes the challenge take less time time to beat, then great. It means more time which could be spent on a different video.
These challenges are not “how fast”, but “if”. That’s all there is to say.
His challenges are “Can I” not “if”
He makes it a challenge to himself to make these videos. He puts himself on a one week time limit to push these videos out weekly while making other videos. He doesn’t even use speed-up during the grinds and still gets it out by the end of the week.
The titles aren’t “Can you beat Pokémon red with your rivals team” or “If you can beat Pokémon red with your rivals team”-it’s “ *Can* *I* beat Pokémon red with your rivals team”
@@diamondborealis454 you are making a strong point for MDB and I support what you are saying. Actually, I was annoyed by myself, when I realized how I formulated, as it’s not what it says in the title.
Still, my point (not in response to you, but generally) is: The videos would in no way be less credible or entertaining, if he would be using a tool to speed up the grinds. Cause it’s not a speed run of any sort. (It also does not say: Can I beat [game] [handicap] in 1 week or less.) So I do not see a point in telling him: “Do not use speed up! It’s less credible.” It just isn’t.
@@diamondborealis454 Semantics
This.
"This challenge wasn't too hard to research too!" He says, while missing the solar beam TM that could have saved him 20 levels of grinding
also, the second Growlithe learned leer, he could've bought a TM for Take down and evolved it. Same with Rhydon.
@@dawnsbuneary Why is there a TM for Take Down?
@@robertlupa8273 Because Gen 1 is a mess.
@@robertlupa8273 Because there's a TM for Dream Eater and the only pokemon who can learn it are Drowzee/Hypno, the ghost(s), and Mew.
There is also a TM for Softboiled and only Chansey & Mew can learn it.
Egg Bomb's TM is pretty limited too; Chansey, Exeggcute/Exeggcutor & Mew.
None of the fossil pokemon can use the Rock Slide TM, which means they can't learn any Rock moves.
@@doomswell a.k.a. Gen 1 moment
Literally, use speedup as much as you want my man. Make those grinds less painful for yourself. If you feel you have something to make up for, just do challenges like this a bit often. Half the grinding time is a really good production boost!
You could exactly copy his team by using the randomizer to turn on "Impossible Evolutions" it allows pokemon that evolve by trade to evolve by level instead.
Another option is using something like pkHex to manually "trade" the pokemon
I’d say use speed up whenever you want. It makes grinding so much less painful
If speed up means he can get more sleep than ABSOLUTELY
Nintendo also literally let you play gen 1 with speed up in one of the stadium games.
He plays on an actual gameboy, not an emulator. So he can't use speed up, sadly.
edit: Or at least I thought he did, I could swear he mentioned on one of his runs that he uses the actual hardware. Guess my memory betrayed me.
@@Shenaldrac honestly when you emulate it's hard to go back to hardware. Even though I still have all my old cartridges for all the games from Gen 3, I'd rather emulate purely for speed up. Plus it's so satisfying playing with a controller over my tiny Gameboy SP
@@Shenaldrac That was jrose
Definitely use the speedup for grinding pokemon, but not battles so you don't accidently use a move you didn't want to and losing a good run for no reason.
I would like to see more runs like these!! I always love seeing multiple Pokémon during these runs!
You should use speed-up whenever you want, especially during long grinds that would take forever otherwise. You give us such amazing content, it's only right that it be as convenient for you as possible.
Agreed. Especially since it doesn't change the gameplay whatsoever. He's not making the challenge any easier. It's just as hard. The only difference is it'll be done faster, so he can do them to higher quality
@@infinitethunder6184 and he can get days off and do harder grinds faster lol
Agreed, no need to torture yourself on long boring grinds
Agreed 100%. Especially if it allows him to not get burned out
I think that speeding the grinds up is fine. The grind is... well... grindy. The point of these isn't really the grind, it's the "How do I make this work?" Since you're trying to get these done once per week, I think the speed-up makes sense.
I really reeeaaaallly enjoyed this run. It was so interesting seeing a specific team from another trainer. Would love to see others like that!
This was great! I'd love to see more runs like this. Seeing full teams is really fun, as there's a lot more variety than that single Pokemon runs.
As far as speeding up goes, I think you should go for it if it enables you to do more interesting runs. The challenge I like seeing is about the strategy and research, not whether or not you have the patience to grind outa million levels.
In my opinion you can use the speed up as much as you want whenever and wherever you want. If people disagree though then I think using it at least during long grinds is a Big OK.
Ahhhhh good to see the recommendation went through with some hilarious results. I knew the rivals move pool (outside of Alakazam) would make this a definitive challenge
Aye my fav Left 4 Dead UA-camr
I remember you as the lfd2 guy but happy you like Pokémon

Good job my friend
Haven't watched one of these in a while but this one seemed interesting. Amazing to see the fossil joke still going.
I am several months late to some of these videos and getting caught up in the middle of the night with our new daughter. I gotta say that the rhydon bit at the elite four was fantastic and hilarious. Thanks mdb.
Speed up for the grind - particularly for long grinds - makes perfect sense to me. I feel like it will actually allow you to have a weekend on these longer challenges!
If you're interested in more varied team runs, I'd love to see an Eeveelutions run. You can pick any game you want, so long as Eevee are readily available to fill out your team via breeding or catching in the wild
Agree! I want to see Eeveelutions only runs -- one for each generation where there is a new Eeveelution.
I know in the past he said the eeveelutions were too strong to make an interesting challenge but I think he said he’d consider a 1 eevee run
@@FrostyFyre
He's done a few solo Eevee challenges to this point actually, but yeah eeveelutions only would be insanely easy
@@LordLucario12 that's right, it's been a while lol
My god, that Rhydon bit was so ridiculous. Made my day, thanks for that
Since the very first Pokémon challenge I watched of yours (around 18 months ago) I was angry that you DIDN’T speed up for your own sake. You’re a creative dude who deserves to use that time you’d save for things you love, and to continue making great content :)

@@dakotashroom5401 Not in Gen 1, there isn't. Flamethrower isn't a TM in Gen 1 at all, and Fire Blast is the TM that Blaine gives.
I don’t see a problem with speeding up long grinds. It’s been years now, you deserve it.
I really think the extra days off has done wonders for you! Your voice and demeanour in your pokemon challengers seems more energetic!
I for one am totally fine with you using speed up, espescially if it leads to more harder challenges and a happier you!
Amazing run! Loved it. Congrats on the whooping. For speed up, i say use it on grinds to save time, no where else though.
Everyone, give a big round of applause to recognize the real MVPs of this run, Arcanine and Rhydon.
That Rhydon play was incredible! The switch from Leer to Tail Whip against Exeggutor was breathtaking, I wish I thought of that
Great video! I'm so glad you're back to longer runs now you're not doing the daily upload. Your runs are really fun, so it's nice not to have them feel rushed :D
Regarding speed up, hey it's your videos, you're providing the entertainment, it's your call! Whatever's easier man!
I finally, f i n a l l y, made it to the end of MDB's Pokemon challenge playlist. I'm a little sad because I can't binge these anymore, but I have a whole channel's worth of videos to watch so that's fun!
I think you'd be safest keeping speed up to grinds such as the one at the end of this run but I, personally, wouldn't care if you used speed up while travelling or not, whatever works best for you, MDB
Love the pfp! Pan wooper!
Oooo, how about Pokemon Black/White with Bianca's Team?

Would love to see this challenge
Or why not as N, iirc, his team changes throughout the game.

That rival battle commentary was awesome!
An interesting idea for a challenge would be gen 5 with only deerling. It’s about as strong as a first form starter.
That would be fun, but... Doin a low base stat pokemon run in gen 5 is kinda... Annoying. Because of the way of level up and experience works that is
@@Gallarday ya i think for gen 5 it has to be a team atlest
How about,
2 deerling?
Heya MDB I think speed up is totally fine for travel and grinding, it doesn’t detract anything from the viewers’ experience imho.

Im all for using speed up during grinding or long travel segments. If you are worried about keeping things ''legit'' you can max it out at 3x speed, which you can do on real hardware by playing it in Dodrio Tower 😁 love the content, you seem so much more energetic since you ended the video a day schedule
It's impossible to please everyone, but I personally have no problem with speed up. However, I will say that I admire the fact you've refrained thus far. You've done this long enough that I say it's up to you. Only you could understand the grinds, what seems like a fair 5 level grind vs a ridiculous 20 level grind in the first patch of grass of the game.
So when does MDB do an Avatar: The Last Onix Trainer run? Serpentine Pokemon only, no type overlap, and all must be named "___ Onix".
I'd say all except Onix. That should be something like Rock Arbok.
But Earth Onix is a pretty metal name and would allow evolving to Steelix)
Then you have Water Onix, Grass Onix and... Thunder Onix? (Eelectric)
We need this.
That's the problem.
Four of the serpentine Pokémon have type overlap. Sandaconda and Steelix are both Ground while Arbok and Seviper are both Poison.
@@goldenhydreigon4727 Serperior is also a thing.
Getting a 4th slot of a different type either requires compromising on Fully Evolved Status (Dragonair is useable, but it ain't strong) or really stretching the definition of serpentine (Eelectric forex)
Rhydon was the MVP of the team, with Arcanine a close second. They're too OP.
Regarding the speed-up option, do whatever you feel is right for you. Since you don't do speedruns, just go for it and save time for the long grinding sessions. I love your content and challenge runs, man, thanks for this video!
i just adore having dinner watching your challenges, i think i've already seen the Gible one about 4 times...
Dont mind me. Just watching my favorite creator with his soothing voice to drift off to sleep (after the vid ends)
You could have used the Randomizer option that allows impossible evolutions. That way you would have Alakazam at LVL 37.
You use the Randomizer for other challenges anyway so no problem there, I guess.
BTW, can you do a challenge where you choose the Dome fossil? Can you? 🤨
Dome fossil superiority
I bet he'd say he considers that cheating, though I personally don't agree, as it's just a more convinient version of trade-trade back you can do on real hardware with two consoles.

You deserve extra free time, hit that speed up for the long grinds, but be careful not to overlevel, since with speed up it can be seen as the easy option
I reckon a sick challenge would be in gen 4 the least amount of steps to beat the game, with the poke walker app to see how many steps you have taken
I like your travel clips where u dont smash into every wall, but especially when u grind levels feel free to speed up wild battles
Honestly I don't care if you use the speed up if it makes your job easier go ahead if it doesn't don't I don't mind as long as you can make these fun videos love your work dude
We’ll get a heartgold or soul silver challenge run some day… I’m holding out hope…
Please
Maybe something like a diglet challange where he first does the run in gold and then the same one in heart gold to see the differences
I think it's perfectly fine to use speedup as often as you want to. It eases the frustration on you, and it allows you to get challenges out faster which doubles as both a way to get crazier challenges like this more often, and allows you to NOT work through your days off, as you seem to be doing a lot. Speedup all the way!
Lol, great video, keep it up, that was interesting!
Hey MDB! Loved the video! I have a suggestion since you asked if we wanted more multiple team challenges. What about Pokemon gold/silver with only headbutt obtainable pokemon? There are some good ones and some that you've used before but it seems kinda interesting i think.
I really like this one. Feels like a fresh and interesting challenge. Also, go Dome Fossil!
I’m waiting for that day he gets Dome fossil but that’ll never happen lol.
Honestly, I've been advocating for speed up whenever it's come up, but if you don't want to use it all the time, then using it during grinding sessions is completely reasonable, especially for multiple pokemon runs.
Speed it up or not, that‘s absolutely up to you. I‘m gonna watch you either way and will love it x3
I actually didn't realise that you weren't speeding the games up when you play. You should absolutely do it! All that grinding is such a time suck and it must surely be way more enjoyable to speed up games you've played hundreds of times.
Don’t forget you can use the UPR to change impossible evos so you can have fully evolved trade evolution Pokemon
& Automatic text! A godsend in gen 4 playthroughs
Please don’t spend an ungodly amount of time grinding when you can speed up. The Magikarp and Wabufet videos are some of my favorite, but I’m not going to stop watching you for using speed up. If you can do more creative runs, I’m all for it.
This was so funny, good job on that
That final Rival win legit reminds me of a win I did as a child in FireRed.
I only had my starter super trained (a Blastoise) but, at the champion, I had lost my Blastoise to his Venusaur. So, I needed to send in my severely underleveled Pidgeotto to hope for a win.
And I did! Because he was in a Solar Beam loop while I was using Fly. On the turns he would release, I was in the air! It was beautiful.
"Do you think I should start using speedup in these challenges, and how frequently?"
Yes, definitely. There are loads of advantages, including completing the challenge faster, make grinding sessions more bearable (like seriously, who goes through 95 LEVELUPS at regular speed without losing its mind), etc.
There also some side effects too. Given that using speedup you can complete these faster, you could have more videos at the ready in less time, having more content in the process.
As for frequency, I'd say you use it all the time. Its pros far outweigh its cons imo.
"But it is cheating"
So using the Doduo/Dodrio GB tower in Stadium is also cheating? I'll gladly keep my sanity, thank you very much
Holy shit I couldn't stop laughing at that Rhydon commentary lmao omg
For some odd reason I have this thing where I hate to see Pokémon under level for a team that has higher levels. And then I saw mah dry bread have under level Pokémon for the league and then he some how won and I’m like dead. I love the video. It does something different for a change
I love this video, when you have time you should try this with the other rivals
See this is one of those rare times where cheating and using a pro code to get the alakazam ins't cheating so much as simply overcoming a technological failing brought on by obsolecence in the game. when the game was made you most definetly could have traded for an alakazam, because its not possible anymore isn't the players fault its a failure in the games overarching design. So I would say its still well within the spirit of this challenge to use the code and get alakazam at the appropriate time in the game you would have gotten it as the challenge isn't "Can I get the same team as Blue" It's can I beat the game with Blues team.
Plus there are at least a few emulators which allow you to trade with yourself
Yeah. He absolutely doesnt need to cheat.
Spin up Pokemon Stadium emulator, copy your red save and load it into slot 1 and 2. Trade in stadium and your guy evolves.
It have the same OT too so its not even recognized as a trade so levels up normally.
Use speed up when grinding, since it's the most annoying part of runs in general
Love the "copy a team" runs!
I'm not against a speed up. I like the concept of unique videos like this and it would simply help with time during grinds. And I forgot it was a tm back then. I've seen a few of your videos before and I may have commented on you videos before but since asked I first found your channel after a mention in a jrose11 video. Honestly I hope you keep up the good videos and the channel.
I’d love to see a run on heart gold or soulsilver. Never since it done
Oh sick, this is going to be a good one! If this works out, you should challenge yourself and do a run with Bruno’s team
You get an onix and you get an onix and you ...
Speed up during grinding is something I can get behind. It would also mean you could do challenges in later games too. A big reason why the early games are so easy to run us because they’re fast, while the newer games get slower and slower, but eventually you slowly do everything interesting in the older games. I’d love to see some of the newer games, and if speedup made it doable, I’m all for it.
Definitely use speedup, as much as you want to. I want to see as many weird and wonderful challenges as you can make and anything you can do to make more of these, or maintain the sense of fun that oozes from your commentary, is to all of our benefits.
On that note, use romhacks to force trade evolutions, edit moves onto pokemon when they shouldn't have them legitimately, do any hacking you need to do to make an interesting challenge. Imagine doing this run here but with your pokemon starting with their finishing moves right from the start. Anything you enjoy makes for an enthusiastic and entertaining video Mr Big League.
