Thanks for the video, Blake. All this device needs is a clip to slide into a cold shoe. Have a nice day.
just received mine today. I love how compact and lightweight it's. I was hoping it would magically work on DJI pocket 2 but no luck. Thanks again Blake for confirming the included lightning to type c cable works like a SC15 cable, which allows me to connect wireless go ii to an iphone for stereo L/R separate track recording. Also, plug a Y splitter to the output port, both can direct monitor. This unit is very versatile. I just wish it could have a clip so that it can be mounted to a cold shoe.
Good deal. I actually considered adding a DIY Velcro mounting setup to it. But yeah, a cold shoe world work well.
Good point, and amazing how technical designers don’t think of those little things, or perhaps they do, but offer them as new versions. It seems a widespread business model. (Imho)
Why doesn't it work on a pocket 2
Also works with the USB port on the DJI Action 2 camera.
Good to know, thanks!
Nice to know thanks
Hi thanks so much for your video! I do ASMR and want to hook up 2 USB mics to a Phoenix pro 15 USB mixer AND then to my phone to film. I can't figure out how to do it 😢 any help would be appreciated ❤❤❤
wow i need this for my work...thanks
Awesome video. Love your content!
Thanks!
Thanks! You filled in key blanks!
1) Does the Samsung camera app see 2 channels like Filmic Pro does? S21 Ultra.
2) Do you know of any gimbals that can handle the weight of the 2 mic rig and Beastgrip?
3) Can any "hybrid gimbals" ALSO do object/talent follow? So you can focus on interviewing and let the gimbal keep subject in frame?
4) Could one use a C hub to have mics and power bank or storage connected too? Thinking for long oral history shooting day...
Just been told by Rode I can plug my Rode filmaker kit into it - so if I cage up my Pixel 6 ive got wireless audio - result
Thank you so much
Awesome & Thanks :)
Great review. Very pragmatic. Even if it’s more expensive, would it be better to use the go wireless ii with the AI Micro than just the wireless go II and 2 SC-19 cables ?
With the Wireless Go 2 you can use one cable in because you can record two transmitters into one receiver. But I use the AI Micro if I’m recording for example one wireless mic and then a shotgun mic. Thanks for watching!
@@iphoneographers thank you for taking the time !
Does this improve the quality of the mic audio compared to traditional lightning to AUX cable? Or SC 6L If possible maybe you can create a video comparing those 3.
Like this comment to signify petition to create comparison video. ☺️
Technically it could as it does have better preamps, but not sure if it would make much of an actual difference or not to your ear. I’ll look into comparing those!
Thank you!
Great video! I just adore your videos. So informative.
I would like to know if possible to listen video through headphones out during the playback of recorded video. Because originally when mic connected to lightning, iphone does not let you listen, you have to disconnect mic from lightning port.
Hi, yes you can do playback with this audio interface. Input and output. Output will just be one mono channel and so you only hear it on one side of your headphones. But any other recordings that are dual mono or stereo, you would hear both channels. Thanks for watching!
@@iphoneographers thank you. And Will it work with Belkin Rockstar Lightning audio+charger?
Haven’t used that, but this comes with its own cable that you’ll need to use. And you’d typically just use the adapter when you’re recording audio.
@@iphoneographers thank you. Acutally Belkin lets you connect mic and charger at the same time. And i tried it works for me with only mic and charger. I think theoritically it should work also with rode ai-micro. But wanted to be sure, if you tried )
Could you hook up two of the old Rode wireless Go’s to this?
Sure. Any 3.5mm connections will work.
@@iphoneographers much appreciation, love your channel. I’m new to the audio aspect of creating UA-cam content. With the Rode AI Micro and the Rode Studio apps like Connect, Reporter or Central - do those apps do the same thing that Ferrite RecordingStudio does, or would there be an advantage to using Ferrite? Also do you have any detailed videos that explain MOST of what someone wanting to up-their-game with audio could listen to / learn from? I’m so new I don’t even know, what I don’t know. Thanks.
Can I connect 2 rode go wireless making it 4 mics
Niiice ty!
Can I record phone calls?
I have Samson Q2U mikes = no built in power.(I want to use 2 mikes) I have XLR to TTR cables to use with the AI micro. If I use the USB cable to get power will they work? Otherwise I presume I'll need to use them via the USB cable and get a USB to TTR cable so they can go via the AI Micro?
Great review. 👏🏼 Just wondering if I can plug in a guitar on this with probably a 3.5mm to 1/4 , 1/2 or XLR adapter?
Should be no problem as this works like other audio interfaces such as a FocusRite Scarlett, but this doesn’t have phantom power.
Hey, great video! Really useful :) Would this work with two of the SAME microphone? I was looking into podcasting using this, because plugging two of the exact same mic into a mac means the mac won't recognise them as two separate devices, meaning that it only pics up one mic. If i used the AI Micro, would it work? Thanks!
Amazing product! Would this product work for 2 samson mics for video? Im doing video podcasts from my Iphone and im concerned about volume for each since there is no knob.
Can i use it for live streaming on social media. as. Facebook and tik tok on android ?
Great video! Would this work with 2 NT5s?
Believe that mic requires phantom power, so if that’s the case then no. You need a self-powered or battery powered XLR mic for it to work.
Is there a simple stereo jack to lightening adapter? I'm trying to get just a stereo audio from my audio interface on my computer, to my iPhone (for music rather than microphones)? So don't really need the two separate L&R inputs but a stereo input. I guess I can use a splitter but if there's a simpler solution that'd be amazing
Not that I know of. Technically, you can’t do stereo in through lightning without a converter/adapter - so a splitter wouldn’t give you discrete channels.
Nice review. Just to clarify 6:42 - with the Rode wireless go or go2, you should be able to to put a lav or shotgun mic in to the rode go, and indeed get it in to the phone? What makes you think you can't?
Yeah that would work. It just wouldn’t be discrete channels. That is if you’re saying use the Rode Go on one channel and a different mic on the other channel via the AI-Micro.
I had a question. But firstly great video. Thank you. Could I use this for recording a podcast using Zoom on an iPad. So my audio goes in the mic input. And then the other person's audio would come out the headphone jack, I could head them. Or is the headphone jack really just used as a 'monitor' of what is going into the microphone?
You can definitely record a podcast with the setup, but you would typically just use the two mic inputs for each speaker. The headphone jack is an input monitor of both channels.
Hi thanks for the video, would be possible to record a stereo input, from an instrument for example, to the micro USB of my phone?
Any luck using this with normal phone calls and/or zoom etc on a phone?
Haven’t tried that, seems it should work for Zoom though.
Can I use this to record a podcast on iPhone with two microphones?
Yes you can.
Hello Greate review!!! A question.... How to connect from Microphone, for example, HyperX Solocast USB C to Tascam recording DR-05X (Jack 3.5 TRS)? I need an adapter, but I don't know which one to use
Not sure you’d need this device for that situation. Maybe I’m misunderstanding, but this is designed for use w phones, tablets or computers.
Niiiiiiice
I really appreciate this video, I was led here after searching for a solution to using a boom mic 🎤 and a wireless 2 lav mic system for a 2 person interview. So can I conclude that I won’t be able to do this with the AI?
You can run the shotgun mic in one channel and a wireless mic in the other to have two separate tracks. Or if you’re saying you want to use TWO lav mics and a boom then you’d have to send the lav mics mixed into one channel and then the shotgun into the other. This of course assuming you’re recording into a phone. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching.
@@iphoneographers Thanss for your response, this is exactly what I want to accomplish, and doing so using FiLMic Pro. I prefer the boom as primary, but want to have the lavs as backup..,
Please tell me, I have an android smartphone with a separate 3.5 jack. Can I use a microphone with a 3.5 input to record the environment. And a lapel microphone in the type c connector to record voices. Will they work at the same time? Sorry for my bad english and thanks for your reply.
I have not seen that before, so I am not sure. Interesting though to have both options. It would likely depend on if an app supported both inputs or one might override the other and only allow one. Curious which phone is that?
What if I use just the normal camera app on the iphone, then want to edit the video and audio in davinci resolve. How would that work?
It would work just like any other normal video file although you don’t have control over the audio it’s all automatic and so if you’re using two mics it would be mixed instead of split track. Using third-party apps you have manual control.
@@iphoneographers okay good to know, thanks!
Ok question can i use it to record audio from phone 1 to phone 2
Is there a way I can use the ai-micro for live stream videos with my Sony zv-10 camera
You can connect it to a computer for the audio side of things, but not video.
Could one connect two xlr microphones using this setup and record into the iPhone 14 pro max camera app or other similar video apps?
Yes, as long as you have XLR to 3.5mm adapters and the mics have power (I use battery powered mics) as there is no phantom power.
Will it accept line level audio or only mic level audio?
I haven’t tried line level.
Would you kindly explain!
I don't understand the difference between this one vs røad wireless go 2 ?
Which one work best with iphone iOS ?
Or do I need to have both?
The Rode Go 2 is a self contained wireless mic system. You don’t need this unless you want to use other types of mics with your phone, too. This will send two mic signals into your device. They both work great with iOS.
You won't be hearing stereo on your headphones, no matter which mode you choose. Always mono, what sounds like out of phase.
Does the Rode go II come with a lightening cable or it's just only usbC?
Cable is an optional accessory
I am guessing that if you plug in your shotgun into channel two and a stereo mic/WirelessGoII in channel one then the stereo will become mono only in that channel? I am hoping to be wrong and could keep stereo (discrete L & R) and add a mono to it … possible?
In your example that would become mono.
Thanks for confirming. After typing that I also figured even if one side was stereo, the other mike would only be on one channel anyway, which I can already do with the wireless GO II and a splitter cable
will it work with a chrome book?
Haven’t tried it personally, but it will work with any USB-C connection on a computer.
ok, that's really interesting, one quick question, if the go2 has both wireless mics, would that still work with the video micro so in effect give you 3 audio inputs into the same footage?
You could get the 3 signals in but the two from the Rode Go 2 would be mixed, then the other channel would be the other mic. So technically you’re hearing all 3 but you’re getting two channel input.
@@iphoneographers so that means there's potential for 4 wireless mics to be recorded at the same time? might not be the cleanest audio ever though
Yes into two channels, so each receiver would be separated, but the two mics would be mixed. So if it’s like a panel discussion then it would work great (where you’re not worried about editing separate tracks). Now if you do this on a computer using the Rode Connect app I believe you can record 4 discrete channels. I haven’t tried this yet but plan to.
Nifty
Would it be possible to use the monitoring headphone jack to record directly into a camera if volume was set appropriately and the device had USB c power? Sort of use it as a +20 db pre amp so the mic levels on the camera can be low to avoid hiss.
So looping it out from another device? Meaning like recording to a phone or a computer, but then taking the headphone out to another camera? Haven’t tried that, but if that’s what you mean then in theory it could work, yes.
What is the adapter you’re using at 7:17? Thank you.
I see the RODE AI-Micro shows one channel on FilMic Pro. Does that mean the audio will only record mono? I do not have the RODE Wireless GO II and I plan to make fictional narratives with dialogue (short films) and record short documentaries for work. Would you recommend I get the Wireless GO II or find an alternative?
Yes it will send discrete audio tracks to the left or right channel. So it’s essentially “stereo“ or a dual mono setup. So if you’re only using one mic it would go only to one channel. Then in post production you can center pan that to where it’s on both channels (mono).
The Rode wireless Go setup is a solid affordable option if you want wireless, so yes I do recommend it. But often for narrative stuff I prefer using a shotgun mic on a boom pole. For example, use a Rode NTG4+ or a Sennheiser MKE 600. Both of these are pretty affordable and will give you high quality sound without breaking the bank.
Or record from my ps4 controller to my phone?
Yeah it should accept any mic level signal.
I’m new to this so forgive me if I’ve missed the obvious. I have the rode wireless go II and the AI micro. I’m trying to record a podcast on my iPhone or iPad Pro (whichever is easier). When I connect the wireless go to the ai micro and use headphones, I can monitor the audio with no problem. However when I plug the wireless go into my iPad Pro via usb c, then plug headphones into the wireless go receiver, I can barely hear anything. I’ve tried various headphones. Should I be able to monitor audio by plugging headphones into the wireless go II? Or can headphone monitoring only be done with the AI micro?
Thanks in advance for any guidance given!
I don’t have those mics in front of me but if memory serves there is no headphone jack on those? There’s only the 3.5mm audio input. So unless I’m wrong the reason you’re not getting audio is because of that. I’ll double check my mics when I have access to them.
So, you could plug in two wireless mic set ups and have four mics to use.
Technically yes, but you get two channels so the separate systems would be mixed into their own track, but you’d have discrete audio from the two system inputs.
hi,
can this be powered by a powerbank and used to monitor live audio from the mics.(wireless go 2 specifically)
thanks
It doesn’t technically require power, but it needs a “source” so to speak to work, meaning a phone or iPad or computer going into an app. But otherwise, yes you can monitor GO 2 mics.
Could this be an alternative to GoPros audio connector?
Haven’t used that in a long time. Is it USB-C? If so this could probably work. This connects to pretty much any mobile device or computer.
@@iphoneographers the connector is usb-c. I love that this has two inputs and a monitor vs the GoPro just has a input and a usb-c port.
is the output direct or after-fx? Just wondering if I can use it for Koala Beats to record into iphone some samples from vinyls and to use headphones output like main output from the app with all fxs? Thanks
It’s direct by default, but you can change it using their apps. Here’s more info on this page… www.rode.com/user-guides/ai-micro
What is the name and where can I purchase the xlr adapter mentioned in 7:17? Thank you.
I’ve had that for like 10 years, but here’s a similar one that is XLR to 3.5mm TRS, so it’ll work with the AI-Micro (but not with a standard Lightning adapter)… amzn.to/3E11OAP
@@iphoneographers Thank you very much. I love your channel and I am learning a lot from you. Have a wonderful day.
How can you use boompole with mic record audio separately then sync it to your iPhone and edit & mix audio on iPhone editor app
You can record to a field recorder using a boom setup and then just use the iPhone built-in mic for reference sound - so in post you take the high-quality audio recorded with the boom and sync it to the reference sound. Then delete the reference sound and you’re good to go. Any app will work to do this, but it’s best to see the audio waveforms to line them up - or some apps will auto sync it for you.
@@iphoneographers cool thank you I will check Amazon for good cheap boompole I’m using Deity D4 mini this will work
Btw, if you get the RODE AI-Micro you could record directly into your phone and not have to sync later, especially if you’re using Filmic Pro where you can set the levels and record split track audio.
@@iphoneographerscool I plan to get Al micro thank you
Will this work on the iPhone native app?
It’ll send the two mics, but it’s mixed not split. Although I *think* there’s a way with the Rode app to make this work. Need to investigate. I don’t use the native app when recording important sound since there’s no control - it’s auto gain.
@@iphoneographers thanks for the insight was thinking of brief clips to record and upload to Instagram stories etc but with good sound
Is the type c to lightning pretty much the same as sc15?
Yes it seems like it. I haven’t tried that cable but I plan to.
@@iphoneographers if that’s the case, I will save that $25 (which I originally planned to buy a SC15), and get AI micro instead as I also want to have it.
Just tested the USB-C to Lightning that comes with the AI-Micro and it does indeed work with the Wireless GO II just as the SC15 cable does. So yeah, don’t really need it unless you want a backup.
Oh so this would be great if I want 2 ppl podcast on single laptop then ?
Yep! Definitely a good option for that.
First!
My phone has headphone jack so I don't need it.
But does it have two mic inputs?
@@Ozpeter i can just use a parallel stereo input adapter.
this also works on pc/mac and Rode Connect app. Saves you time in audio post-edit as you could add the compressor, etc during recording.
Can it stereo signal from mixer?
Technically, yes, but it’s basically a dual mono or a split track input.
