    Good video. I honestly don't understand why anyone would ever get an Android tablet when you can get a Chrome OS tablet which is basically both a Chromebook and an Android tablet with the play store.

    • @AndroidDigest
      @AndroidDigest  2 роки тому +10

      True! The one thing I will say is that there aren't a lot of Chrome OS tablets with a lot of power right now. And no 120hz yet on Chrome OS (coming soon). And they do benchmark with about half the power of the Galaxy Tab S8 series. Some people really want 120hz or more power. But you are right. It comes with a higher price and no desktop operating system and no chrome extensions. Chrome OS is in many ways the best of both worlds

      @@AndroidDigest that would be good if we start getting high refresh rate Chrome OS tablets. I currently have a Tab S4 and looking to upgrade. My girlfriend has an Acer Spin 713 and I have the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8+. The overall responsiveness and palm rejection of the pen is much better on the Tab S8, which is vital for note taking. I also was looking for something more powerful than what existing detachables offer thanks to the demands I put on it for school work. However, if there was a similar premium Chromebook tablet, I probably would have bought that instead.

    I purchased this tablet as my first Chromebook and I like it a lot. Battery life is fantastic, full Chrome version with proper bookmark on a tablet is great for browsing. OLED screen is amazing, keyboard makes it a laptop. Also, 16:9 display is great for split windows and for watching Udemy or UA-cam or Netflix. The only thing I am missing is SD card slot to keep some local storage. Bye iPad and Android tablets, this works much better for me.

    Nice review! Just recently picked this up for 100 bucks off at Best Buy. Very happy with it! I was thinking about the 11 inch that comes later, but the screen size and OLED on this won me over (plus smaller bezels). More ram/storage at a similar price too, at least the Best Buy one.

      @@cobaltblue5523 Still one of my daily drivers for bringing to the cafe to read e-books and get some writing done for work. Favorite part has got to be the OLED display still. Just binged Stranger Things S4 and the vibrant colors were mesmerizing.
      Least favorite has got to be the touchpad. Might be the worst one I've used on a laptop/tablet. Find myself using the touch screen almost exclusively when I use this device. It gets unnecessarily hard to get precise gestures and movements because of how shoddy the surface feels. The OG Duet had a much, much better trackpad in my opinion. It's not a dealbreaker but it's something I notice quite often.

    • @AndroidDigest
      @AndroidDigest  2 роки тому

      @@cobaltblue5523 for me personally I will add to that and say that my biggest issues have to do with Chrome OS at Large and not necessarily with this device. There are a lot of minor software bugs specifically with the touch screen keyboard, the keyboard will blink when typing on certain websites, if I type in Google docs, the android app, with the touch keyboard, it will randomly delete certain things. When you try to use a Chrome OS keyboard on Android, or even on certain websites, or if you try to use an Android keyboard like Gboard on Chrome OS, it gets buggy like that.
      I also wish it was slightly faster. But for the price the performance is good for the money

    I can see immense potential for the next version "Duet 5". Now there are mid-range SOCs capable of doubling the power. 12GB ram and 256gb storage would be a nice option. To that, add a 90hz 1920*1280 14" OLED and you've got a winner on all fronts. If they could even manage to get 2X the performance of a docked switch it would mean that upscaling from 960*640 may result in 90fps for most mainstream games, or native 1920*1280 @30fps for more CPU bound titles.

    • @AndroidDigest
      @AndroidDigest  2 роки тому +3

      Yep! If we got a 90hz or 120hz Duet that would be incredible. There is a new ARM chip that's in the Acer Spin 513, and it's just as fast as a 10th gen i3 processor, which is pretty good for an arm chip. If you put a chip like that in with a 90hz screen, I really see that as the future of the Duet lineup. And I'm excited for it

    Hey man, thank you for your review and long-term experience. Thanks to you I chose Duet 5 as my new laptop :) This is my first ChromeOS device, but boy I love it. It has its limitations and there are minor bugs here and there, but for productivity, this blows any Android tablet out of the water. For a relatively weak SoC, this thing is super fast and responsive. Much better than many lower-to-mid-range Windows laptops. And really, 13 hours on one charge is no problem with this device. I just had a hard time finding it online. It seems Lenovo is no longer selling these devices in Europe. I managed to snatch a good deal on Amazon in Germany. So thanks again, your review helped a lot and I feel I made a good choice with this laptop.

      I guess that's really hard for me to say. If you're just going into Google photos and doing editing through that, sure. You're doing some very light video editing, sure. But it doesn't have a lot of power for heavy dedicated video editing. And you're going to have to rely on Android apps or apps through the web to video edit.

    • @AndroidDigest
      @AndroidDigest  2 роки тому +2

      Yes. BUT remember this is a Chromebook. So you have to subscribe to Microsoft Office 365 to get access to word and excel. Otherwise you need to use Google docs, Google sheets, etc. Overall I'm a bigger fan of Google stuff since it's free and easier to organize in Google drive, but some professors may prefer a word format. You can save google docs in that format anyway, just sharing what to expect. If you are wanting a device for play first, a tablet is great, because a tablet focuses more on having a good screen, a bright screen, etc. If you plan to do more intense work you might as well get a Chromebook for the same price with a little more power. The screen may not be as good but in exchange you get extra power. It just depends on what you want to prioritize. In your case you probably won't need a ton of power though. Chromebooks and tablets are web based, but more secure, and slower Chromebooks are faster than windows laptops with similar specs because the operating system is so light, but I still wanted to be honest about the limitations with Word. Even if you subscribe to office 365 Microsoft does hold a few features away from Chromebooks too

      @AndroidDigest  2 роки тому +2

      It works pretty good. This does have an ARM processor, so it will do pretty good with Android, maybe has the speed of a Snapdragon 720, something like a Pixel 4a. You can expect mid-range performance with games, good compatibility overall, though I can't guarantee it will work perfectly with everything.
      The compatibility issues I have are normally small and unrelated to things like games. If I try to use the Chrome OS keyboard in the ANDROID version of Google docs for example, sometimes it will re-insert words I just deleted or weird glitches like that. But normally if I was in google docs I'd have the keyboard attached (and no issues there) or you could always use the web version. So any small glitches can be worked around

      Thanks for all the support! Honestly, it's really tough to decide. I would say if you need to do a little more productivity work, the Chromebook duet is a great option. The 11-in model would do great too.
      But if you don't plan to use the keyboard as much and if you plan to use it primarily as a tablet, I would recommend the Lenovo p11 pro gen. 2. It's been going on sale for under $300 and it has a 120Hz screen with an OLED panel. That's really really good for a tablet, especially at that price. And the performance is still really good too. If you really just doing some light browsing and watching videos, that tablet would do amazing at that. And for the price it's pretty unbeatable.
      If you get a Chromebook Duet, it's a little more flexible and a little better for productivity work. But there are a little bit of bugs on the Android side. Or some bugs with a touch screen keyboard on occasion. On the other hand, it will get more updates and it is a little more versatile.
      So it really depends on how much you would use a keyboard. And how big of a device you want. Based on your initial comment, I would say the Lenovo P11 Pro Gen 2, assuming you're okay not having a fingerprint sensor (it has none). But if that's a deal breaker or you will use the keyboard more, my response would probably change

    280$ for a 1080p oled screen is a good deal, getting a computer included is unbeatable. It is the lower end model. My other duet 5 is also a 4gb but it works very very well. It's no powerhouse but for web browsing, watching video and cloud stuff, it's great.

      You really just need to get a USI stylus. You could find a bunch of them that I reviewed at the same time here: ua-cam.com/video/t7rvpq-Q6eE/v-deo.html
      I will say that this Chromebook only supports USI 1.0. but there is a new USI 2.0 that is out on some newer Chromebooks. So they're starting to release USI 2.0 pens. Those pens will work with older Chromebooks like this one. But buying a USI 2.0 pen will future proof you whenever you buy newer Chromebooks in the future. So I would look up USI 2.0 on Amazon. They may be a little more expensive though. Not sure. All of the ones I reviewed are USI 1.0. but all of those will work with your Chromebook. And like I did do a full review on them. Check them out here

    What extensions do you use?

    • @AndroidDigest
      @AndroidDigest  2 роки тому +1

      I use Chrome Remote Desktop so I can access my chromebook from another device. I also use a web extension that helps me to make affiliate links, there's also web extensions if you have kids and you want to track what they are doing on the web (especially for the young ones) and there's even web extensions for printers. Those are the main things I would personally use, but there are plenty of web extensions, like grammarly which can help correct your data, or honey is a good web extension that helps you find promo codes when you are ordering from websites or food. Rakuten is a good website that gives you cash back for ordering things online, and keeping the web extension on automatically adds cash back for shopping in certain places. (If Rakuten can prove they directed you to a website, a company like Best Buy may give them 5% cash back on your purchase, and they will give you maybe 1-2% back for using their service, the extension is a way for them to automatically change the link to show you were sent there by them. So it's a win win).
      The point is, so many extensions are helpful. Plus there are a lot of websites that don't load quite as well on an Android phone or tablet, a full desktop version of Chrome loads websites a little bit better as well

    I need to work a lot in google slides and sheets and am looking at the upcoming 11” to do this on planes or in tight spaces where my laptop won’t work. Id never video edit on this but I’m curious how it does with a lot of work type tabs open. I’d love to know if either the duet 5 or duet 3 can handle multiple big slide decks in a few tabs without having to reload them every time the tab is clicked!

    • @AndroidDigest
      @AndroidDigest  2 роки тому +2

      That's difficult to say. I don't think it would really need to reload much with 3-5 tabs open, but more tabs than that and you will probably need to reload. The newer duet 3 and duet 5 have the same processor. But the newer duet 3 on the Lenovo website only has 4 GB of RAM (and the Duet 5 on the Lenovo website only has 4 GB of RAM) so you want to make sure you get a version with 8 GB of RAM (normally the versions from Best Buy).
      I will add that it's possible that Sheets or Slides will have a little more strain on the device compared to a typical website. I don't run 5 versions of sheets so I can't be sure. Just trying to give the best information I have

      @@AndroidDigest this is the best answer I’ve heard, thank you so much!!! I appreciate your honesty in your reviews and am glad I found your channel. For those who work in the google suite, chrome books are a great option when you can’t fit your whole laptop on a flight or in a car because they allow you to work offline with full featured docs, slides, sheets, etc. iPads work really well in these scenarios but the iOS software for the g suite just isn’t good enough for productive work. A typical workflow is usually gmail with chat open using a keyboard for shortcuts, calendar open, 2-3 slide decks and maybe a doc.

    Is this better than the tab s8 plus? I ordered it to trade in my s7fe (I paid 250 for it on samsung outlet store) and they are giving me 500 trade in with 100 off the tablet so I'm paying 350 now for the tab samsung s8 plus. Should I cancel that order and get this instead? So technically I'm paying 600 for the tab s8 plus. Would it be smarter to keep my tab s7fe and buy this and own both or just keep my order of the tab s8 plus?

    • @AndroidDigest
      @AndroidDigest  2 роки тому

      Hey Lena, honestly in your shoes I'd just keep the Tab S8 Plus. It has a 120hz screen, so everything will refresh much faster on the screen, it's also much faster than the Duet, by a good margin. The screen is also much better. There are also some small quirks to Chrome OS Tablets right now. The keyboard on the touch screen, when using twitter for example, or on reddit, the keyboard will blink when you press the space bar, weird quirks.
      Chrome tablets like this are very versatile. It's great for those people who really need a full desktop version of google chrome, or for people who need to run web extensions for various reasons. As a youtuber, there are a few web extensions I use in Google Chrome that I like, that I can't use on an android tablet, but most people don't have those little quirks.
      I'd say the Tab S8 Plus is a far better device. If it fits your needs and if you like it, definitely keep it, between the two I'd much rather have an S8 Plus. Especially since you got such a great trade on the S7 FE. That's my take. But there's always things you can do. You could buy a windows laptop and have a cheaper tablet on the side, you can get a chromebook and a tablet, you can just get one tablet to do it all, depending on your needs there are always a ton of combos you can go with. If you are anything like me though, I try stuff out and switch it out all the time, I get excited about a new combo, but honestly there are a lot of GOOD answers, a lot of right answers. So don't stress too much about the one you made, I think the Tab S8 Plus is a great one. The Duet is more for people who have $400 (the S8 Plus costs a lot more if you don't have a trade in) and for people who need that extra versatility, but it does come at a small cost, with some minor bugs.

      Yes it does. And it runs most Android apps pretty well. Just remember that the apps are made for touch screen so the keyboard/trackpad may not work well in all the apps. It will run Android apps in a similar way to a mid range tablet. Like the S6 Lite maybe

      Hopefully someone can answer. I will say that they both worked with my monitor and worked at full resolution, but that's all I know

    If you speed this up to x1.5, it sounds like a QVC commercial.

    My 1 year old tab s6 lite is getting really really slow lately and I'm thinking of buying the duet 5 or upcoming duet 3 and giving this one to a family member, even typing this its molases slow

      Well I'm waay late to this, but the Duet 3 or Duet 5 would be a great option. There is also a faster S6 Lite that just released, a 2022 version. Honestly if you want to stick with Samsung you may want to look for something like a Tab S7 FE on ebay, I've seen them around $300 in mint condition, maybe $350, but that's a little faster than even the newer S6 Lite, and bigger But if you want that small form factor the Duet 3 or S6 Lite 2022 may be good options. The Duet 5 is amazing, but it is much bigger, so it depends.
      PS: I did review the Duet 3 and S6 Lite 2022 on my channel, feel free to check it out

      This device isn't going to handle linux well. Linux requires a lot of power, this processor isn't super powerful. It handles basic stuff terrifically but it won't do well with linux. Only some basic stuff on linux
