  • TikToker Chris Gifford had his venomous snake ("zebra cobra" - N. n. nigricincta) escape and DID NOT report it to authorities. The snake was found by a neighbor SEVEN MONTHS later! He now faces dozens of charges and North Carolina lawmakers are calling for stricter reptile laws! Here is a tale EVERYONE in the hobby should hear and learn from! One person can change the entire legal landscape for this hobby!

In my township it is illegal to keep any reptile. Doesn’t matter if it is even a bearded dragon or corn snake. And it is so cold where I live that any escapees would barely survive a couple months so it’s not like the town council’s argument is conservation either..
*only reptiles allowed are “green turtles” and geckos

As reptile keepers and the perception the general public has about our pets, there is so little margin for error. A cat or a dog gets out, no big deal. Heck, if a dog bites someone, it's a problem for that owner (and the person who was bit, of course), but overall, no one is talking about banning dogs. It's not right, but that is the reality of our situation and reptile keepers need to understand this; we can't afford to be this reckless. So many of us work so hard to show reptiles as something other than scary monsters and all that work can easily be undone by just one yahoo who can't be bothered to do the bare minimum to keep himself and his community safe. This is so frustrating.

It baffles me when keepers intentionally make their animals angry, hissing, etc. I understand the desire to show off but think about how it looks to a non-reptile lover. "Omg, that thing is dangerous looking!" And/or "omg, those crazy people is torturing that poor creature!" Are what the viewers think when they watched it. Why not show how tame, how intelligent, how rewarding it is to interact with these wonderful creatures? Is that not as equally "cool?"

Completely agree. It not only demonises responsible keepers but also the animals themselves. The worst part is it's the videos where people are making the animals angry, getting them to hood up or strike, that are shared by big social media presences like Ladbible, so millions of people see things like a King Cobra being defensive and striking out at someone, and become terrified by them, while the people who are putting hard work into teaching people that most of these animals want NOTHING to do with us and would rather flee than waste their precious venom, that they NEED to be able to hunt and eat, on us. People should be taught to respect these animals, not fear them, and how valuable they are to the world's eco-systems. Social Media provides an amazing platform for people to see these animals for what they really are, but unfortunately most people only get to see them as villains that are out to get us thanks to idiots who provoke and aggravate them to make it look like they're out to get us. Literally the only reptiles on the planet that would go out of their way to attack a human being that isn't threatening them in any way are fully grown Saltwater and Nile Crocodiles, that are large and powerful enough to look at us and see a snack, and even they are more than intelligent enough to be trained not to see us as a threat in captivity if treated with respect.

It's so disgusting that not a single reptile keeper can make a mistake without hurting everyone else in the hobby, but dog and cat keepers have allowed dogs to maul and kill people, and cats to decimate endangered species of native wildlife, and no one jumps immediately to ban them.

I'm in Virginia, and as of July 1st, we had a bunch of laws passed. Overnight, I now own banned animals that I had to get registered and grandfathered in. We have a feral cat problem, but my turtles are considered an issue? I've owned reptiles for nearly 35 years, this is the first time I've ever been seriously worried about my animals.

@@ProfessorHerp Virginia has a box turtle ban now, captive or wild caught.. They changed the rule for having up to 5 animals of each native species to now you can have one animal, just one. Everyone that has animals before July 1st can get them grandfathered though. I have 3 box turtles, had to register all of them. Worried about my other critters in the future.

When it come to any reptile, you need to keep it properly. And there needs to regulations as in term of permit, classes, a hurricane plans, ect. But taking all hots away is ridiculous.

I actually live in NC, not far from Raleigh. I had not heard about the potential ban but the definitely makes me irritated. Whatever happened to personal responsibility!!!! What is it with the government wanting to take rights away from perfectly responsible people due to the actions of one idiot!!! Also, in response to a previous comment, there’s “no valid reason to keep any animal except that you have a purpose for the animal or just simply enjoy them. I have 4 Great Danes…no valid reason to keep them except I love the breed. Same goes for venomous animals. If you are responsible, which this guy was NOT, there should be no issues. A permit would be ok just so people would have to prove they have the education to care for the animal properly.

Unpopular opinion: Venomous reptiles should be banned for all but educational, research, and conservational institutions if said venom is deadly. There just isn’t a valid reason that the average Joe needs to keep these types of animals. At a minimum I feel the US should have federal requirements for reptile keeping as some European countries do. Far too many animals are being kept in inadequate and unsafe conditions.

So this seems to be another rant about the escaped cobra incident. People have been ranting all over the place about this, and while I understand the urge to rant about it, I'm getting a little frustrated over seeing lots of rants but absolutely zero effort to educate keepers about how to actually respond effectively when anti-reptile legislation gets proposed. It is being proposed frequently, and as we all know it is also getting passed. Us ranting about how stupid the laws are or about how irresponsible some keepers are is not going to change things. Joining USARK is one very basic step that can be taken, but there's a lot more we can do, like learn how to communicate effectively with legislators, and learning how and when to offer public comment in response to proposed laws. We need to do some work within the hobby to change a few norms. But all of the rants I am seeing aren't going to help any of this happen. Sure, it's fun to post snarky comments about this keeper or yell about how feral dogs and cats are worse. That's all true. But it still isn't a solution to the challenges we face as a hobby. Less ranting. More solution-focused action, please.
