The guitar solo in the beginning is supposed to (and does) sound like data from a fax or modem (for those of you old enough to remember what those are) :)
Great song! I saw them for the first time in 1993 live in Switzerland...30 years later 16.12.2023 I had the honour to meet them again in Berne, Switzerland. Real gentlemen 🔥🤘🤩
This is one of the most amazing guitar performances I have ever seen! Much respect to Vernon Reid and to the whole band! I saw Living Colour in '89, opening for the Stones, and LC tore it up!
@christianman73 Vernon reid is like some alien-like guitarist sent here from a completely different planet. He also happens to be the person who's had the most influence on my electric guitar playing, and jazz playing. Funny how much, to the untrained musician, a distortion pedal can mask the amount of theoretical knowledge Vernon Read actually HAS.
@UrbanMonkey55 WOW! That's weird, because I just bought a new monitor and part of the warranty disclaimer says the company refuses to honour any damage to the monitor that may occur from watching (or clicking on) Living Colour videos.
After heavily studying classical music (as guitarist), between ages 5 and 10, then realizing MEGADETH were just a classical music band played fast with distortion pedals, as did METALLICA, and someone giving me a CASSETTE in 1990 of random LIVING COLOUR SONGS, realizing not just the band itself, but VERNON REID especially, at the time, were all covering every single genre possible - again, under the guise of a distortion pedal, and as much as they collide, call it "FREE JAZZ" with a distortion pedal. and a hell of a lot of training. Whole scale notes and quickly changing modes and polyrhythms isn't easy unless you REALLY know what you're doing. (Don't discount Corey on the guitar, as he actually played quite a lot of Rhythm guitar parts too which people aren't aware of). Seeing them live is unforgettable. It's a paradoxical clash of ideas based on the albums that just seems to WORK. The NEW album.. wow.
@ nimim. Marko Mikkila , @Eric Yates , @Michael Gong.. anyone see my 2 posts, one below, one above, regarding this comment? I didn't give it a thumbs down for a certain reason, which M. Pam basically said before I'd read it. As far as Eric Yates comment goes... um (BODY COUNT)... um... NO, NO, NO and NO!!! YES... BODY COUNT and DO ROCK!! I've seen them before. However, you aren't musicians obviously... (no musician would say such a thing), or be that racially ignorant (nobody could be that ignorant. TAKE YOUR EYES OFF THE SCREEN FOR A MOMENT and realize how brilliant Jazz, Classical, etc, musicans LIVING COLOUR actually are regardless of their skin colour, and that includes the bands you mentioned only cos of their skin colour as well, whom I also very much appreciate as musicians. SUCH AN IGNORANT STATEMENT FROM BOTH OF YOU!
@Danny Nichols THANK YOU. You're one of the first people who backed up my statement, regardless of colour (except for the band title), etc. Music is either good, or it's not. Simple as that. For people to pigeonhole it (except for the hilarious band AN*L: C*NT doing a song called ("Living Colour is my favourite "Black Metal" band), no joke, because the lead singer from them had always said he loved Living Colour, sincerely (R.I.P. Seth Putnam) on here as to say it is their favourite "BLACK" band is ridiculous. These guys were trained from early on. Vernon's use of the whole tone scale is rarely taught these days, but I've been teaching that for 30 years, and it's VERNON REID and my first guitar teacher who are responsible for that. So Thank You, Danny Nichols! And screw all those ignorant idiots who probably come from Arkansas or Utah or IOWA.
Living Coloür never loses relevance one of the greatest bands of the late eighties. My Vivid cassette tape was completely warn out..I had Times Up on CD one of my first CDs. They say the future... it's on a microchip Don't you know we're all on a sinking ship Only one percent control all the rest Only one percent decide what is best
But the guitar intro emulates a 90's modem or fax. Which is still today technically mindblowind. If you dig Vernon I can recommend his solo album "Mistaken Identity", more experimental and intimate.
These guys can do absolutely no wrong. Just can't believe i only went out to see them on two occasions. Hopefully they will still decide to tour the globe and fully entertain us. As per usual! Excellent!
I'M glad I saw them twice in my life Fucking outstanding band live they can hang with any band maiden, megadeth, priest if the open up for any of them you have to come out blazing to top them👊Hard rock forever to all that love it🎸
I was there - believe that was September of 1990 and I'm sure it was at The Concert Hall downtown T.O. During Will Calhoun's drum solo, part of the roof caved in. Talk about rocket sauce. Phenomenal show, but L.C. had already started to slide a bit out of pop culture consciousness by that point. A shame, as they rocked and showed how boundary-shredding a good bunch of musicians could be, while still getting air play. Can you do that these days? :)
if not mistaken...mnevins got information overload as his credit on Times up! this album! What's up? I dragged JL to see LC at The Chance last summer. Just great to see them again! Better w/age!
@CEREALK - I was involved with the band when it was written and recorded. My comments are based on conversations with Vernon at that time, before it was recorded.
If Jimi Hendrix were alive today, I am sure that he would he proud of Vernon Reid. The dude is just a bad-ass guitarist but complemented with Corey on vocals and the bad-ass on the bass (sorry forgot his name).
(HUN) Kár érte, amikor a gitáros barátunk elragadtatja magát. Egy sokkal többre érdemes zenekar (volt). Ha kivesszük a Time's Up lemezről a felesleges gitárszólókat, akkor zseniális alkotás. -Szerintem -
@nimim @Marko Mikkila This only is for you, or anyone who thinks like you.. no actual musician would say such things, or be that racially ignorant (nobody could be that ignorant. TAKE YOUR EYES OFF THE SCREEN FOR A MOMENT and realize how brilliant Jazz, Classical, etc, musicans LIVING COLOUR actually are regardless of their skin colour). Also, it that includes the bands you mentioned only because of their skin colour, whom I also very much appreciate as musicians. SUCH AN IGNORANT STATEMENT FROM BOTH OF YOU, and shame on you. I suppose you've also never heard the song "LUCKY" by a "BLACK" musician called "LEWIS TAYLOR"? By the way, this is not an offensive post. I just thought you should be a little bit more aware. Beauty and extreme intelligence and ability go way further than skin deep. I wouldn't be the brilliant musician I am today if it weren't for the members of LIVING COLOUR.
One of the best live shows I’ve ever seen , this tour rocked. ! Muzz was tops! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

This is one of my favorites from Times Up.
*FINALLY GETTING TO SEE ALL THIS FOOTAGE. Its like looking through a never seen photo book of family members I grew up with...!!!!!!* 🥰😎
My screen almost exploded from the badassness of this performance.
@UrbanMonkey55 WOW! That's weird, because I just bought a new monitor and part of the warranty disclaimer says the company refuses to honour any damage to the monitor that may occur from watching (or clicking on) Living Colour videos.
Yeah baby! Was at the show, Bad Brains opened and the ceiling started to cave in towards the end of LC's set!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The hardest rockin´ afro-american band... so far! One of the best damn live acts I ever saw!
The hardest band. Period.
@@MPam1619 don't forget Fishbone, 24/7 Spyz, Bad Brains
@@michaelgong256 also body count and wicked wisdom
Actually it's probably just one of the most hard-rockin, musically intellectual, yet soulful, MULTI-CULTURAL bands in history.

one of the best metal bands regardless of colour. Living Colour!

Wow, amazing riff and performance and THE LYRICS WERE SO F*ING AHEAD OF ITS TIME, seems to have been written in 2019😮 5 stars

LC and me, it's a love story since they're around ! Musically, they put the nails on 1980's music coffin.
I love Living Colour!
Re-discovered after 20+ years - just amazing!
Absolutely, was hooked from the first album and they got better and better. All sick musicians.
Los vi el 2009, maravillosos!! Saludos desde Chile!
Great band listen to them all the time when I was at College.
One of my favourite track from my favourite living colour cd!
what a GREAT guitar player Vernon Reid was at the time...
I mean he still might be but haven't heard a lot of him in the last two decades.
Muzz Skillings! Massive fan of Doug on Stain, Collidescope, Songs from the Chair, Shade, but this is something amazing!
This was in Toronto. I was there. They literally brought down the roof. Chunks of the ceiling of the Masonic Hall were falling by the end.
03:40 that bassline
I'M glad I saw them twice in my life Fucking outstanding band live they can hang with any band maiden, megadeth, priest if the open up for any of them you have to come out blazing to top them👊Hard rock forever to all that love it🎸
What Muzz does here at 4:17 reminds me of 6:16 of the following P-Funk live show: ua-cam.com/video/c56CPc6n0AY/v-deo.html

@josephgatlin They are a great band regardless of race.

yeah!
Inspirador maldito solooooooooooooo!!!!!
Great show. I was there too. Great band, great album. I was young. What’s not to love? Are there more clips out there from this particular show?

More poignant 3 decades later.
