I would like to see someone do a long distance ADV ride on one if these. They look like a bunch of fun.

I have one. LOVE IT. The farthest I've ridden it in a day is about 75 miles. My ass was grass after it. LOVE it tons though.

Hello ! I'm not sure ! The speedometer on the Monkey is not connected on the wheel but on the front sproket ! That's why you thinks the top speed is better with a little one ! But it isn't !
A little front sproket make more rotation at the same speed and the speedometer receives then not the good information (sorry, for my englisch, i'm a french guy)
A little more acceleration perhaps, but not better top speed at the on board speedometer ! Please look at it with a indépendant gps..regards, Eric.

Listening to your story about front sprockets brought back some memories, a week after I got my new motorbike, the very thing you described happened, it was a bad wreck and I now have a metal plate on my collarbone!

Thanks for the video. I'm really only focused on the steep up hills, so I'm glad you covered that! So more grade capability, and same top speed sounds like a great update. Thanks!

imho, if you want more speed- get a bigger bike. the setup I’m doing is a low speed mini adv, so I’m more concerned with torque between 10-40 mph, not top speed. A 14t sprocket and pipe does help where I’m looking for it, but it’s not a magic bullet upgrade for performance across the board that transforms a mini bike into something else.

It would have been cool to see the actual changing of the sprocket. I've never done it, would like to see it done. You live in such a beautiful area!

I have done the 14 front and a 36 rear. im 250lb , i get much better acceleration now and top speed is still close to 60mph on gps. seems i still usually run out of room before the bike reaches top speed lol. But its much more responsive for in and around town riding. the speedo is out about 5 or 6 mph. So far i just mentally drop the speed 5mph to figure out where im at. theres a few speedo healers out there, starting at 80 bucks. something to consider. personally i dont care im not constantly watching my speed on the monkey as its a slow bike anyway and i move with traffic normally.

Ha Ha, den är så cool o söt. Funderar starkt på att köpa en sån då min Aprilia Tuono ibland kan bli lite väl mycket på små vägarna :) Grymt håftig..

Design flaw! Note that in front of the back tyre and Inline with the swing arm pivot the steel frame has a long thin horizontal cut out with a small hole in it and then a square cut out hole above that.
The tiny hole goes right through into the swing arm bearing cavity, and mine had got water and grit inside, and the pivot bolt plating had started to discolour!!!!!!!!!
    The Grom is the same.
Clean and re grease the cavity, then block the hole, or fit a grease nipple in it!!!!!
Weird design flaw on an otherwise brilliant little bike!

For more top end don’t you need to go up on the front and down on rear sprocket but you lose acceleration

Thank you for this informative video of changing the sprocket for lower gearing.
One can conclude that it is a cheap modification but as you say, does not increase the top speed or improve acceleration, makes starting on a hill easier (solved by just giving more gas) but alters the speedo reading and distance on the instrument cluster.
So surely the conclusion is that it was a waste of money.

Unless you are riding dirt trails.the gear reduction gives the bike a little more torque off the line.i think it's worth doing.

Maybe if you flash the ECU with a DynoJet it'd be better? I know that once you increase air I/O the ECU flash is more necessary. Probably not so much with something as low level as a change in gearing. IDK

Surely if you are changing the exhaust pipe and air intake and giving it more power, then you would not need to put a lower gearing on it.

Ok, I have a question. You say you went down I tooth size on the front sprocket to increase max speed? I thought it was the other way around. The reason I ask is because I went up one tooth in the front and the top speed did not seem to change at all if not go down slightly. Any advice would be great... thanks

I think you should have measured time to speed as opposed to top speed. Acceleration is, in my view, more important than top speed. Also, at this bike's price point I'm not sure how many modifications I'd be willing to make. For example, the Ohlins rear shock upgrade represents a third of the purchase price. They work great but I'm not sure I'd want to make that much of an investment in a bike of this type. We gearheads don't always think these things through. By the time that mod and all of the others that are available are done, the costs could have put a person on a more conventional motorcycle with performance far exceeding what they'd ever get from a Monkey. It's just a matter of time before somebody puts a v-twin in one of these things. I hope I didn't just give somebody a really dumb idea.

Every Honda I've had has been geared a bit too low, missing a gear or an overdrive wide spread in the gearing. I guess Japanese folk like that vibration in the handgrips and engine screaming when on flat level road(!) Anyways, I think I'm losing my mind as I'm trying to get my old college Honda - CM200T - to go a bit faster than 55 MPH, so I got a bigger front sprocket & smaller one on the rear. That seems to be how 10-speed bicycle gearing works. CM200T only has a 4-speed box & could prob do 62 - 65 with a 5th gear! C'mon Honda!

If you lack the power and am a long way from the rev limiter, then you increase your top speed by gearing the bike down. Shorter sprocket on front taller on rear. This will hopefully give you enough torque to hit rev limiter in top gear.
If you have plenty of power then use the formula on your ten speed bicycle. Put taller front or shorter rear sprocket to increase speed. You will trade low end power or torque for it though.

@@mr.shannon6137 Yes, I actually looked at my 18-speed bike a couple of times to make sure my dumb dyslexic ass didn't have this transposed! 1st gear takeoffs and the bike is screaming & needs to shift by the time you've gone less than 25 feet...always felt like I could climb straight up a big Oak tree, and 2nd gear about the same. So, I'm trying to get Mustang Sally to settle down a bit and smooth out the level road ride. I got the biggest front sprocket that'll physically fit - I believe it's 2 teeth bigger (17) than the factory 15 and I'm down 2 teeth or so on the rear. I haven't gotten the bike ready to run yet, so we shall see. I got a new chain, too, & I have a theory you might comment on: sprockets wear out chains & chains wear out sprockets!! ;-)

Your speedo needs adjusting. It’s not your true speed. You have actually lost speed. Go 15/36. Way better
