  • After fitting different size tyres and now fitting a 14 tooth sprocket to our monkey, the ABS light came on. Could this be the 14 tooth sprocket or a combination of both ... 🤔

I think it moves just fine for 9hp, around town and the outskirts just perfect, but for highways, it is not fine :),,, need a bigger bike for that looking for a Yamaha dragstar "bobber"650 or a Honda cmx 500 with some luck I can fit them both in my garage, or my car must stay outside I guess :)

How did you solve the issue with abs light flashing?

Hi David, we couldn't solve the ABS problem whilst the Michelin tyres were on the Monkey. We kept the 14 tooth front sprocket on as it gave better acceleration and presume that it was a combination of both the reduction in sprocket and tyre size that was just too much for the little Monkey brain to handle 🤔😂 After winter we put some Pirelli SL60 tyres on ( Fantastic ) which were the correct size and the ABS light turned off again after 5mph 😁 ... Thanks for watching 👍

Hi Alvaro Portabella, we first changed the tyres for the Michelin and they were 130/70/R12 both front and rear and had no problems with the ABS light. Then we changed the front sprocket to a 14 tooth and that's when we had problems with the ABS light. We then changed back to original tyre size in the spring 120/80/R12 front and 130/80/R12 rear and the ABS light stopped flashing, we kept the 14 tooth sprocket on the Monkey. So changing either tyre size or sprocket was fine but not both 🤔 ... Thanks for watching 👍

We only had the ABS light problem when both the sprocket and tyre size were changed, once the correct size tyres were put back on, the light went off even with the 14 tooth front sprocket still on the bike 🤔 Thanks for watching 👍

@@gtube153 - Big Rodders in Ireland here. I'm experimenting with sprocket sizes as a prelude to fitting 70 profile street tyres. With standard tyres running a 16 tooth sprocket I had no instances of the ABS light coming on. However, with a 14 tooth sprocket and travelling at a constant 50mph GPS speed the light does illuminate occasionally. My understanding is that the ABS is not operational when the light flashes. My real concern is that there may be insurance implications if tyre sizes are changed - any views?

Hi Big Rodders 👋 We learned over time that the ABS on the Monkey is operated via the IMU and is designed to stop less experienced riders from going over the handlebars if they grab to much front brake, it doesn't work nearly as good as conventional ABS so be careful when riding in the rain or any slippery conditions even when the ABS light is out ! Quote taken from Honda " The single-channel ABS is controlled by an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) so the rear of the bike won’t lift under heavy braking ".
As for your insurance concerns, we all know that insurance companies globally use the internationally recognised #1 code of practice " Use ANY EXCUSE not to pay out on a claim " . So I guess because we've changed the vehicle from the manufacturers specifications, tyres, front sprockets etc, the insurance companies could try that as an excuse ? You've certainly opened the proverbial can of worms there ... But of course, they would need to know this first, would they check the bike 🤔 Thanks for watching 👍
