    That's my bedroom window to the left (some of the video was from my terrace). I had been at the Rolling Stones. In bed late. Crazy 4:14 wake up when the fire started exploding.
    The FDNY did a great job. They were measured in determining how to extinguish. I knew they had it under control.
    Amazingly, no smoke damage in my Apt.

    No one in the comments has any clue about NYC building construction and it shows. Sure it’s easy to go flying in there when your fires are in the back room of a one story ranch. It’s a different ballgame here and the time that is saved by taking a minute for the truck/ engine boss to ensure the best angle of attack is monumental when it comes to these prewars, H types, etc. When you’re routinely stretching 8+ dead loaded lengths you’re quick learn that slow is smooth and smooth is fast; committing yourself to the wrong stairwell or hallway results in a clusterfuck that will take at least 2x as long to unfuck.

      They aren't the only big city FD in the world and it certainly doesn't mean they are the best. Breathing Apparatus safety procedures are shockingly lax in most US fire depts and they never seem to learn the lesson of BA entry control procedures despite many of your own pressing for change. As a former BA instructor I cringe at the senseless loss of live stricter control will prevent.

    I’m always amazed by the calmness the FDNY walks into a fire with. It’s almost as if the members are saying “No need to panic folks, we’ve got this, you’re safe.”

    • @Stargazzer811
      @Stargazzer811 7 місяців тому +12

      You're correct in that it projects an air of calm, which is intentional so as to not panic people. It also goes back to an old saying: Slow is Smooth, Smooth is Fast. If you slow down for a moment and take the time to analyze your surroundings, you will avoid unnecessary issues and hazards and be able to quickly finish the job.

    What amazes me is at the beginning of the video are the people in the condo to the right of the fire just looking out their window at the fire not even a hundred feet away from them, when the fire alarm sounds you get out now, and if that doesn’t motivate you then the raging fire outside of your condo should do it. History is filled with tens of thousands of people who have died because they waited to long to evacuate a burning building.

    • @Heavenly_Fury
      @Heavenly_Fury 7 місяців тому +7

      Actually depending on the building it's best to shelter in place in hi-rise and apartment buildings. History has shown that those that run out during the fire succumb to smoke inhalation Bronx fire in 2022 is an example people ran out left their door open and when the halls filled with smoke they never made it out, they couldn't find the exits or the way back also. best case to do is to close the door and call the fire department.

    It’s funny how people talk shit about FDNY, these guys go thru some of the toughest training, they arrive to jobs within 3 mins and they always knock down fires as fast as possible if it doesn’t have to go up in alarms. This fire is contained it’s not spreading there’s no exposure so there’s no need to have a sense of urgency, it’s rubbish the trash sits in one spot for the most part, people say they’re slow yet I bet the small city or town they live in their firefighters will let a whole house go up in flames before they can even get a line stretched, FDNY gets the job done no other department could match them

For example when I put on my gear first time ever I was rushing, fast as possible, I made mistakes took me over 2 minutes, second time they told me to slow down got down to 1 min and 30 seconds because less mistakes were made eventually I got under 1 minute. Well obviously not in too much of a hurry to put out the fire and save the building. Stand there and watch it. While a cluster of them can’t figure out what hose to take… this, no, this… this or nothing. And then you have a garden hose stream… guess they decided the hose from the truck was too big for the fire.

      That's probably Engine 22's 15th call of that shift, a really routine one at that, and those guys are probably tired. Plus it's a contained small space fire that can only spread upward against stone and brick. It's not going anywhere fast.

      @@ritirons2726 You're assuming it has anything within reach that can fuel it to do so. You're also assuming they'd allow the fire to get that bad. My advice? Don't make assumptions.

    • @ritirons2726
      @ritirons2726 7 місяців тому

      @@Stargazzer811 there’s not much to assume when the discussion with the can man clearly indicates to put water on the cracked window. If there wasn’t a potential for lateral spread into the building then there would be no reason to tell the can man to apply water to a specific area.

    • @Stargazzer811
      @Stargazzer811 7 місяців тому +1

      @@ritirons2726 Which falls back on my 2nd point that you'd assume they'd allow the fire to get bad enough for the window to fail. Clearly, because the can man was directed to protect the window, they had no intention of doing so. Therefore there was no risk of lateral extension.

    LA would have been packed up and on the way home by the time FDNY finally got water on the fire. No reason why they couldn't have started hitting it from above while the crew was slowly walking in with the handline. FDNY might be the biggest fire company in the country but they are NOT the best by a longshot.
