The problem with these old structures is that they have seen numerous business changes and no telling how many renovations and remodels since being built. So you never know what you're getting into when you have an extended deep-seated fire. It really comes down to opening up (top-side) and essentially allowing the fire to come to the firefighters. It's not worth having a catastrophic instantaneous collapse with a 2 or 3 companies inside. I think once they opened up and realized they had a very hot deep-seated fire in the cockloft the commander made a wise decision to pull interior firefighters out and go defensive!
For the fire to be confined to a small one-story building, the fire sure seemed to be stubborn and hard to get at, even with handlines on both sides of the fire being played from above, a bucket tower in operation at the center front as well as an aerial tower at the rear and at least two interior attack lines all in play. Good video, thanks for the chance to see it firsthand.
The congestion and intertwined bldgs. in NYC is unreal--old bldgs. remodeled many times--a REAL nightmare for the FDNY.Extra alarms sounded as a precaution.
@@billnicholson7639its also useful for using multiple handlines.. one engine can feed all of them. or can feed multiple other apparatus.. it has tons of uses.. great peace of gear.
What are those beeper things that go "dee doo weee do" over and over again? I recall hearing tons of those in the videos of aftermath 9/11/01 wreckage.
They’re called a PASS Alarm. They’re tied into their SCBA’s. When you turn the bottle on, it arms the alarm. If you remain motionless for a period of time, they begin to alert. If you don’t move, they go into full alarm. Hope that answered your question.
I think that was a boo boo...started providing water to the bucket before they were ready. These streams are too dangerous for them to do something that extreme!
Saw a big black smoke to my north-northwest around 7:15AM as I drove east on the Belt pkwy. Saw an NYPD helo heading straight in that direction from Floyd Bennett and what looks like 3 other helos circling.
I see that there are stubborn fires that are in the cockloft of these 1 story buildings. The flames take lots of time to be extinguished that it needs more than one cherry picker to extinguish them. That is a big job for the New York Bravest.
After watching these FDNY videos, I'm spoiled. I've watched same kind of videos of other fire depts. in other states, they're all idiots compared to the FDNY. I start yelling at the videos of other fire depts. in other states.

Like always awesome coverage!
What is the device shown at 45:05 and 48:00 that the firefighters seem to be adjusting?
Bill Nicholson That’s a hose manifold. You can hookup multiple lines from it when it’s hooked up to a hydrant.
Mike Doggers Thanks!

The fireman wear them inside so you can find them should they go down

Great job FDNY
Was there a guy across the street that was smoking?
Is that why the tower ladder put the stream on that side? LOL

For all of these Firefighters, I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving. I still say, your weight in gold.
40:37 - that cop just disappeared.
K. S. What you do the video frame by frame you can see it stopped for a second watch the smoke.
It was a joke...pretty obvious there was some editing taking place.
Anthony Sampson 👍
Looks like a two alarm fire with three alarms standing around.
Too bad you weren't there to show them how it's done.
How many buildings are on fire? Camera person is all over the place..
