The CM-64 map is the SC-88 Pro's hidden gem. Even though most of the sounds use SC-55 samples it's still an acceptable emulation but some of the organs, basses, celesta, warm bell and a few woodwinds use lofi LA samples. I don't know why so many people poo poo the CM-64 map as MT-32's are a bit on the pricey side.
Very nice. Great quality. I have the Roland Sound Canvas SC55 Mark I and the Roland Sound Canvas SC88 but i have tested the game only with my Roland MT32.
Thanks for uploading this! I just got an 88Pro and was looking for video of it in CM-64 mode, though a quick correction: the 88Pro doesn't emulate the CM-64. It has samples of the original instruments in it, which are mapped to the CM-64 map when you initialize that. Games that use SysEx data to modify how the CM64 synthesizes instruments (Space Quest 3, Akumajou Densetsu, etc) will sound completely wrong since the 88Pro doesn't do any synthesis emulation. Still though, games that use the default map like Monkey Island sounds really nice :D
Speedy While that is true that it has samples the original Synths are LA Based Synths, and they used their samples differently to any standard PCM Synth, so the SC-88 Pro is still Emulating the sounds even with samples :) good thing is the SC-88 Pro contains samples of the 33 Sound effects that the CM-32L and CM-64 contained for games like GODS and Elite Plus. You can hear a reasonable difference in The Secret of Monkey Island even though I still think it sounds awesome, I also have Videos of the MT-32 and the CM-500 that actually contains a Real CM-64 for The Secret of Monkey Island. You are correct about the Sysex data unfortunately some games don't work properly, thanks for the comment :) Check out how LA synths work in Wiki etc as they take to much to write in a comment :)
Wish i understood more what you guys are talking about :D I'm a midi noob, but just bought a mint sc-d70 and trying to get into it. I just use midi plugin for winamp or vanBasco's player. Most stuff sounds amazing, but some files sounds completely wrong... Is playing through dosbox the best option for midi files, and what player do you guys use?
Jens Robot I use dosbox for midi in dos games and Vanbasco for playing MIDI files, songs will sound different on most synth and some songs require GS or XG samples and a compatible software or hardware midi device to play correctly :)
The game originally supported the Roland MT-32 (which was not General MIDI) but for sure the SC-88 can "pretend" to be an MT-32 for the mappings but use its newer instruments?
Also, if you run the game in ScummVM, it can remap the MT-32 soundtrack to General MIDI on-the-fly for you and you can use any soundfont. Most non-Sierra games did not use many custom samples and work pretty well.
In DOS you need to select the General MIDI or in some games sound canvas option in the games setup, in the CM-64 mode you need to select MT-32 or CM-64 in the games setup.
Oh, this sounds more realistic than the MT-32 one.
OMG I just got an SC-88 Pro, can't wait to fire this baby up! 😆

How this compare to the mt32?
@@johndee759 It sounds pretty good but not the same, check out my MT-32 video to compare :)
good work im glad this model works like a charm.
Hi, I'm about to buy this roland. To play midi and video games. How did you connected it to a modern pc? Should I buy some specific interface?
@Eru Clusivus video games sounds
I use a USB to MIDI cable to connect it under modern Windows with dosbox, in dos I use a 15-Pin MIDI/Joystick port to MIDI cable.
Danke
do you have the midi file, I want to try this on my alesis keyboard and my alesis midiverb, it has some amasing sounds
I dont sorry I run the game for the music :(
sounds really good^^
but I just have to be honest, it's not as good as the MT-32 ver
Kue57 I like both but it’s hard to compete with the original sounds :)
Honestly MT-32 always wins against the Sound Canvases to me. I dunno, it just sounds fuller and crispier.
love it, but can't help myself... MI has to be on MT32
Yeah it sure sounds the best on the MT32 :)
How do you get this to work ? I have a Roland SC-88VL. It will play .mid files, but games wont pick up the midi signal

In DOS you need to select the General MIDI or in some games sound canvas option in the games setup, in the CM-64 mode you need to select MT-32 or CM-64 in the games setup.
Also depending on the sound card it may have DOS drivers/TSRs for the MIDI port to work.
Can you do Ultima VI?
I can look into that at a later date :)
BEXY'S PC ok, thanks :)
