  • CHERRY AUDIO DREAMSYNTH - BUY OR PASS?
Composer Daniel Willett take you on a walkthrough of Cherry Audio's Dreamsynth.
This video shows you Cherry Audio's Dream Synth, the sound engine, and composition.
Cherry Audio's Dreamsynth is a tribute to the celebrated hybrid analog/digital synthesizers of the mid-to-late 1980s. The innovative design blends flexible dual-wave morphing oscillators, stereo filters, fully polyphonic analog strings, extensive and easy-to-use modulation, studio-quality effects, and MPE support, all in an elegant vintage-style synth interface.
Dreamsynth draws its inspiration from renowned synths including the Ensoniq ESQ-1, the Kawai "K" series, and the Sequential Prophet VS. In the second half of the '80s, music production was rapidly transitioning from analog to digital. These "hybrid" synthesizers bridged the gap, combining the precision and flexibility of sampled digital oscillators with the warmth of analog filters. The combination of digital and analog sound produced instruments with character and a unique sonic fingerprint that still resonates today.
With the magic of these vintage classics in mind, we set out to design Dreamsynth. Dreamsynth is a "What if...?" synthesizer incorporating the distinctive qualities of this remarkable era with the best features of modern software instruments to create a uniquely 21st-century hybrid. Here's a look at the highlights:
Three dual-waveform oscillators amount to six simultaneous virtual analog or PCM sample-based oscillators with up to 16 voices of polyphony. When modulation is applied, the unique A/B wave mix controls can create a myriad of evolving or rhythmic vector tones.
Combines authentic analog waveforms with sampled PCM waveforms for incredible new timbres. Includes a massive library of 430 looping, one-shot, and single-cycle PCM waveforms.
Dreamsynth also includes a beautiful-sounding classic string synthesizer that, unlike traditional paraphonic string synths, is fully polyphonic. It operates independently of the oscillator-based synthesizer, and both can be layered and split across the keyboard, with separate assignments for the arpeggiator and effects.
The OB-style 12 dB/octave multimode stereo filters enable breathtaking timbres from subtle to extreme.
Dreamsynth features exceptional modulation capabilities with 20 mod sources and over 40 destinations. Routings are immediately accessible through our innovative interface with individual pop-up menus and invertible knobs.
The effects section includes multiple distortion and sample-crushing options, a 12-stage phaser, chorus, flanger, and rotary speaker effects. Also available are numerous delay (including our acclaimed tape delay) and reverb effects, including our fabulous new "Galactic" algorithm.
Supports MIDI Polyphonic Expression (MPE), making Dreamsynth capable of more organic and expressive performances.

I hope you guys are working on a patch that will solve the unreal CPU usage. Even at no oversampling some of the presets take my CPU to 80% with only one instance of dreamsynth. And i have a pretty decent mid their new Intel unit. Still love the synth but can barely use it

@@INeedsMoneys Some of the presets are CPU intensive, but we test on a wide variety of systems. You may have to simply turn off some of the effects to see if that's where the bottleneck is on your system.

Great demo song and review. I’m a big fan of their stuff. For some reason, I thought this might be more of a 90s era take on VAs like the Virus, Nord etc. Maybe that’s on the way…

I have several of their synths. This is actually one of the best! It does a better job of the Blade Runner sound than the GX-80, and recreates the Oberheim sound too. I have created a generative patch on with Voltage Modular, and it sounds really nice with the Dreamsynth...and also the Sines synth.

Thank you for this very enjoyable well crafted demo of the Dreamsynth. Back in the mid-1980s, I discovered the synths of the era and saved up my money for a Sequential Circuits Six-Trak. I dabbled with it for a few years - mostly trying to recreate the lead lines of the songs coming out at that time. Oh what fun! After watching your video a few times, I am going to place my order.

Just installed DS a couple of weeks ago, an impressive array of tools and effects to work with, which can be recombined in seemingly endless ways. The presets that came with it are more than enough to get started, but of course, more would be even better. My only complaint might be that in a few instances, the sound came out scratchy sounding, some sort of unintended noise, and also a very high pitched "hum" that would sometimes occur, but in general, it is an impressive synth engine.
For $40, not at all a bad deal. I've been a Voltage Modular user for many months . . . now I have an even more elaborate virtual synth lab to work with.

SOLD!!! Loved the detailed and to the point presentation but hearing the very professional and modern sounding composition is what really sold me. What did you use for the drums though? That's another sound I'm always struggling to get right in my music and I wish Cherry Audio would consider creating a drum VST to go with the rest of their incredible synth products. Whatever you were using sounded perfect. Also, what DAW was that you were using? Thanks again for the very professional demo!

Trying it out now. The sounds are amazing, but the CPU load is a little concerning. That's the only thing im on the fence with. Outside of that... Beautiful synth!

I ran into that on some of the patches too. I run into that on most Cherry audio releases but its usually only a few of the patches i have this problem with. Turn off the effects because they’re usually the worst offenders. Im running an ancient upgraded mac and i have a lot of cherry audio synths but don’t get to use them that often because they use so much processing power. When i do though i just render/ print the track. It sounds like a lot of the retro Cherry Audio synths so if you have others you probably don’t need this one. The sound is pretty nice and it does have a lot of flexibility (I would have liked a 24db filter slope though) so ill play with it a bit more before i commit.

I don't have Dreamsynth as of yet...but I do have the Arp Quadra and it has variable oversampling settings. I have a quad core PC with 16GB of Ram & the CPU usage is fine of the 3X setting. Experiment with the different settings & you should not have any issues.

It’s a shame that some (all) of the one-shot samples have a buzzy sustain to them when held - some worse than others.
I’m not fond of the envelope release shape and I feel the looping of some of the sampled waves could be better.
I’m surprised these flaws weren’t picked up during beta testing.
There’s something odd about the reverb too - it seems to add a low level digital hash to everything (like quantisation noise).
I wanted to like this but, as it is, it’s not for me. Maybe after some bug fixes.

I made the mistake of buying this synth, its crap. Lots of glitches and CPU spikes. Totally unreliable. Save your dough and get Surge.
