While I support making streets more safe for pedestrians, the state needs to paint the no parking space red. It is also pointless to have laws that are not enforced. Where I live, the intersection of Octavia/Haight, the crosswalk and intersection are constantly blocked by drivers. MTA does nothing about issuing tickets to deter this behavior.

It's a DMV law like not parking in front of a fire hydrant. It does need to be painted. Though I'm sure some smaller cities will paint the curbs. Though, on the other hand, they would get more illegal parking revenue if they don't paint it

Another reason to avoid going to San Francisco to eat. Yes, San Francisco is anti car. They are removing parking spaces, car lanes, closing off streets and adding more obstacles in the intersections. Look at all of the congestion now. They are going to kill off small businesses. Once this happens only large corporations like Walmart will be able to come in and establish themselves. This is exactly the opposite of what the people want. Thank you Mayor Greed.

How about for every intersection we built a bridge to let them cross the street safely by going above the vehicles, no need to wait for traffic lights to change. Just walk up the steps and cross the bridge, like what they have for freeway crossings. Have them in every intersection. So drivers now don't have to deal with pedestrians anymore and will save millions of lives.

Nobody can drive on Market, and now when you try to park nearby you’ll get a ticket in an unmarked spot. Then your car window will be smashed. Enjoy your day in downtown SF! If you take BART it’s super expensive and no where to park on the other side, as well as being filled with junkies muttering and threatening everyone. This is why the city is losing every business downtown, as well as crazy rent prices for retail. Then the supervisors will be shocked that there are no more retail establishments in the downtown area.

Of course people *should* pay attention when crossing the street, but the law has *always* made it clear that drivers must always be prepared to suddenly stop to prevent accident. Before this devolves into an "us vs. them" / "anti-car vs. pro-car" yelling match, let's keep in mind that the person looking down at their phone while crossing the street may well be on their way to/from their parked car. Most of us use more than one form of transportation, be it driving, walking, cycling, public transit, ride sharing... The law makes sense to me, but I agree that the city ought to paint the curbs red - and until they do so, they should be issuing warnings but not actual citations.

There's a common parking technique used in the City, especially if you drive a large work vehicle like a van or box truck.
You have another car that you can use to placehold. A car that exists for the sole purpose of parking another.
The easiest place to make that "musical chairs" maneuver is at the corners.
The result is that very large vehicles are at every corner making visibility a very real concern.
The best plan was to go through and paint a third crosswalk line. It was a great plan in theory... But they quickly learned that most drivers don't understand what the third line is.
The next best option is to go through the entire city and red zone the curbs.
Even if you put spike strips on the corners; You're going to have couriers, corner store customers, delivery drivers, "just ran up to grab something" people parking in the spot.
Lack of parking isn't fixed by less parking to "encourage" less cars. That's just not going to happen.

  • @Todd.T
    @Todd.T 7 місяців тому

Since we have snow in Canada, we just have signs that say "No parking" and an arrow. You can park on the inside of signs where there are no arrows. If there are arrows pointing both ways, you simply can't park there.
You were never allowed to park this close to a crosswalk anyway. So less people get hit. Wait! Nope people still get hit. They play with their smart phones, the light changes in their favor, they stand there not moving, the drivers are trying to make eye contact and then eventually the driver executes the turn. Ther person on the phone finally looks, sees the light and steps off the curb into moving traffic.
It's easier to blame the car because it's harder to die in one (and the government doesn't like you having one) but a rule of driving is that if you didn't see the light change in your favor, the light is considered "stale" which means you have no idea when it turned green and how long it will stay that way. The same should apply to people crossing the street but since they don't drive, they don't have to pass a test to walk.
Government should text all cell phone owners the link to existing laws and common sense every year by December to educate people ahead of the new year. Why aren't lawmakers think about this?

I hope we revisit this and get some Public Health doctors to remark upon what the impacts to health might be. Because as an old man and a pedestrian, I can tell you that my head has to be on a swivel the second I step out my front door. We never know if a car or a MUNI is going to attack. And that's not good for our health.
The reduction in pedestrian blood pressure and the downstream health effects of that, not to mention fewer injuries/deaths, are going to save our City, and our state, a ton of money. It'd be nice to have a wild guess estimate of how much that might amount to. There's really no risk in throwing a number out there, as long as we represent it correctly - and it is a social+political win.
Reducing Risk wherever we can is a huge task that will inch us closer to being able to justify Universal Single-Payer healthcare. And anything that makes this a more pleasant place to live is good for almost every aspect of state economy. Foolishness... this only protects pedestrians that cross on without waiting for green lights or a clear roadway. If there is a read light, the vehicles will be stopping anyway. If there is not a red light, the car will be traveling at speed, and the 20 feet is insufficient to stop a vehicle. Lastly, human nature dictates that pedestrians will simply start crossing 20 feet earlier and "cut the corner" because they do that anyway.
