Hey Trader Joe's Fans! Tell me in the comments below, what’s your favorite food item to pick up at Trader Joe’s OR even if you don't shop at Trader Joe's, what’s your favorite hiking/backpacking snack to bring with you out on trail?
I was literally talking to Michelle tonight about what foods we are going to take on our 4-day hike in August, when I told her, "I'm gonna check Kathleen's channel to see if she has any recommendations." I log into UA-cam tonight and you graciously uploaded a video for me. Thank you so much.
I don't believe there is a Natural Grocers near me, but I do hear that Winco has an amazing (and cheap) bulk foods section. I want to check it out one of these days!!
Love Trader Joe's for hiking snacks! On a recent trip they didn't have some of my tried & true faves so I had to branch out. The new (?) olives & herbs nuts and "bazaar" mix trail mix are both pretty good. I also like the chocolate covered honey squares for if I am not sure if it will be too hot for chocolate. Oh, and mini stroopwaffles & pink & white cookies are also faves in our house. They used to have the best oatmeal cups which are great for car-camping (and not bad for one night backpacking) but they don't have them anymore. :(
I get sad when Trader Joe's is to of my favorites too, but this store is a good one to branch out in. They always have fun, new, unique items to taste test. I love it! Thanks for all of the recommendations!!
In my trail-mix, I like including little Cadbury Eggs Milk Chocolate Candy (the Christmas colored ones). I don't know why but the Christmas colors bring me a little extra joy. I sometimes also like adding the Christmas mint M&Ms. I buy extras during the holidays just for this purpose. I'm not a crazy Christmas person I just like the candy it provides. Also, you should really try dehydrating your own watermelon :).
I'm a BIG FAN of always packing things (especially food) that bring you extra joy out on trail. Mint M&Ms sound delicious! I really wish they'd make the mini Hershey's Kisses again. Those were divine! I'm a huge sucker for the Reeses Peanut Butter Cup Eggs that come out around Easter time. Yum!!
Thanks for sharing! The only problem I see with this video and advice is that my average "serving" is about double than the recommended. LOL!! I love snacking! Like why stop at 8 dark-chocolate covered almonds??!?! :P
I have that same problem too. Depending on how many miles I’m out hiking and how much time I spend out on trail, my serving sizes will increase. This is why I often resort to “double breakfasts”, “double lunches”, etc. 😂
I typically repackage all of my trail food as a way of saving weight and space and it helps to portion out my snacks. Otherwise I end up eating the whole dang bag!!
I understand that it is easier to carry dried food like you show here, but doesn't all the salt and spice make you crave even more water (that you also carry around) ?
That came fast! In December, I had just barely made it to 1,000 subscribers. This is amazing!! It's so fun to watch my channel grow. Thank you for being a part of it. :)
Great idea! I actually had the idea to try dehydrating watermelon. Then my fired introduced me to the watermelon jerky at Trader Joe's. Guess I better pull out the dehydrator again soon.
@@TheHungryHiker have you ever seen a recipe for dehydrated watermelon? I just can't see putting the pulp in a blender and dehydrating it and getting anything out of it. It would be too thin.
True! And the few times I do leave town with any type of fresh, heavy, water laden foods, they are usually the first foods I eat and are such a treat!!
Thumbs up, but boy did you go fast through your selection of favorites under $2 per serving! I didn’t have enough time to see the information on each product!
You can always go back and pause the sections you’re interested in. I purposely keep the pace up on my videos because I know most of us (myself included) don’t have very long attention spans.
Under settings, there's an option to play videos at a slower speed. It's super helpful for getting all the info you want from a video and for those UA-camrs who talk really fast.

Another great video! Thanks Kathleen! Hope to see you on trail soon 😊
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed this one!
Great info, I LOVE shopping Trader Joe's, and haven't tried many of these ~ now I'm going to ~ thanks for the recommendations!
You are so welcome!
Do you have the Natural Grocers store in WA? They have the best bulk options in my opinion, especially dried mangos and even dried refried beans.

Love that mashed potatoes and beef jerky meal 😋
It's soooo good, even when it's not Thanksgiving time!
@@TheHungryHiker nice combo, I use real taters though, and Uncle bucks brand beef jerky 😋
@@TheHungryHiker double delicious

Great video. I should really go to the States Just for shopping food 😅
I hear that a lot!
When in the states, get you some of that 'cheese in a can'. Amazing stuff.
@@bryrye4545 Cheez Whiz!!! :)
@@bryrye4545 I don't think that it will happen, but I keep it in mind 😉
Love Channel! STAY AWESOME!
Thank you! You stay awesome as well. :)
they have a chocolate covered orange slices that are so good 😛.
P.S. Happy Belated Birthday 🥳!! (saw your ig post)
Those sound amazing! And thank you for the birthday wishes!!

I love the cowboy caviar salsa from Trader Joe’s. Black bean and corn, pretty chunky. 🔥 🔥 🔥
Glass jar doesn’t work for backpacking though..
That sounds super yummy! I'll have to add that one to my list. The glass might not work for backpacking, but it would work perfectly for car camping!!
Maybe some things can be re-,packaged if they don't need refrigeration after opening.

Why not try making your own watermelon jerky?
Great idea! I actually had the idea to try dehydrating watermelon. Then my fired introduced me to the watermelon jerky at Trader Joe's. Guess I better pull out the dehydrator again soon.

@@paultruzzi911 you don't blend it. Put it on the tray directly as slices. VW Family Farms has a UA-cam video on it.
Haven’t tried dehydrating watermelon yet.
Update: I’m in the process of trying to dehydrate my first batch of watermelon slices!!
Foods that have more water allow you to temporarily carry less water. I do this with apples a lot
