    Who else out there refuses to cook breakfast in the morning on trail and would rather sleep in? Whether you bust out the stove in the morning or eat on the go, tell me in the comments below, what is your favorite thing to eat on trail for breakfast? Fun Fact: For the first 100 miles of the PCT in 2018, I ate Rice Krispy Treats for breakfast every morning.

      Sleep in?? Who does that? Floating in my nice comfy hammock I wake up with the energy to make breakfast if I choose. Though I'm consistently inconsistent in my breakfast choices.

      I could never bring myself to make a breakfast on trail. Wake up eat a honey bun, slam some instant oat meal and chug a breakfast essential was my go too. Bars for second breakfast.

    I do 1 heaping cup of Raisin Bran plus 1/3 cup NIDO in a baggie. NIDO is creamier than milk powders. Add water, shake, and eat out of the baggie. My other favorite breakfast is to take a package of RAMEN , break up into tiny pieces, and don't use seasoning pack. Instead, add 1/4 cup Pioneer Country Gravy mix. On trail, add 1 cup boiling water and maybe some bacon pieces. It is a substitute for Biscuits and Gravy.

    You can also do what I like to call “ breakfast couscous” normal couscous but you add in Raisins, dried pineapple, honey, and/or maple syrup. Something to mix it up when you want hot breakfasts but are sick of oatmeal.

    Really interesting, thank you! I remember during my year in the US getting frustrated not being able to find dried milk anywhere. Easy to find here in the uk. Standard breakfast is ‘backpackers meusli mix’. Dried milk powder mixed with your favorite meusli/granola. Just add water and stir. Use excessive milk powder for a lovely creamy version!

      I'm glad you've found what works for you. The awesome thing about backpacking is there's no one right way to do things. If it's a low mileage day, I'll take the time to cook breakfast, but when I've got 20+ miles to hike that day, all I want to do is get on trail and eat while I hike. Otherwise I'm coming into camp after dark and that's never fun.

    I always have coffee in the morning, which means that I always boil water in the morning. My favorite backpacking breakfast is instant oatmeal. The flavored instant oatmeals are too sweet for me, so I mix a regular (plain) packet with a flavored packet, add boiling water, and stir. Then I stir boiling water into the coffee (Starbucks VIA instant singles), add creamer (Mini Moo half-and-half singles), and start enjoying my coffee while I wait for the oatmeal to finish soaking.

    • @TheHungryHiker
      @TheHungryHiker  3 роки тому

      Cooking in the morning, even if it’s just to boil water is too much of a chore for me on trail. I’d rather sleep in. 😂

    • @DarinMcGrew
      @DarinMcGrew 3 роки тому

      Why not both? Sleep in, and then boil water (for coffee and oatmeal), so you have the best of both worlds?

    • @TheHungryHiker
      @TheHungryHiker  3 роки тому +1

      @@DarinMcGrew Most of the backpacking I've done has been thru-hiking, which means not a lot of time spent in camp in the morning. Instead, it's all about getting out of camp early so I can get in the miles for the day. I'd rather eat on the go and enjoy a longer lunch. I also don't drink coffee so not having a warm breakfast isn't something I miss on trail. Dinner on the otherhand...

    • @DarinMcGrew
      @DarinMcGrew 3 роки тому +2

      Most of my backpacking has been with kids from church. We've car-camped near the trailhead on Friday night, hiked in on Saturday, and hiked out on Sunday. It's definitely NOT thru-hiking. It's low mileage, low pressure, fun-for-newbies backpacking.
      Part of that is coffee and/or hot chocolate for everyone in the morning. The kids usually have 2-3 packets of flavored instant oatmeal, and the adults usually have 1-2 packets of flavored instant oatmeal mixed with 1-2 packets of regular (plain) instant oatmeal.

    I got those Lenny & Larry cookies after watching this but they really didn't agree with my stomach. I didn't believe the problem could be a cookie, so after getting better from the first one I ate more. Not long after I was really sick again.

    I'd rather get to hiking in the morning - on trail I'm not there to camp. A bar might work. I brought oats for a section and never cooked it. It ended up just taking space in my pack.

      I’m right there with you. I’d rather start hiking and warm up then sit around waiting for breakfast to cook and do dishes.

      I got the mustard colored beanie years ago from Zuilly. I tried to find it again recently because I'd love to have it in another color and couldn't find it anywhere.

      Thank you! It's one of my favorite - so comfy. I bought this one online from Zulily YEARS ago from a small, no-name brand. I tried to find them again recently and had no such luck. I wish I had bought it in all the colors at the time.

    Second breakfast. Are you a hobbit?

    • @TheHungryHiker
      @TheHungryHiker  3 роки тому +1

      Are you judging me? Last time I checked, hobbits live underground and tend to have hairy feet - none of which apply to me. The weird things people ask me on UA-cam...
      Many thru-hikers and backpackers practice the concept of having a second breakfast while out on trail. Hiking a lot of miles in one day makes people hungry because you burn so many calories doing it. I know I'm certainly not the only one who enjoys having a second breakfast when putting in the miles.

      @@TheHungryHiker Girl, you are awesome! My two little boys have second breakfast every day! They eat cereal and milk while I'm getting something hot ready, take a play break, and then eat their sausage and waffles 🤣. Growing fast or hiking miles and miles, you are lovely and fit, and definitely not hobbity 😘

    Pop Tarts is the worst from the list. It's super sweet and that sweetness is NOT even real sugar. It instead contains High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS).
    Is causes obesity and several other health issues. Too many other backpacking videos similar to this one, also recommend Pop Tarts which is really bad.

      You know what causes obesity and other health issues? Sitting in front of your computer all day typing crappy, judgey comments on UA-cam videos. No one asked for your opinion. Take a hike. 😀
