Not sure if someone mentioned this or not but to eliminate the fraying I use liquid super glue on the ends. Best way is to do a line of glue across the wrap beforehand then cut it after a minute for a very clean cut. Works amazing.

For you turbo guys (and Eric may have noticed this as well), when you wrap exhaust and turbo manifolds, since it helps retain the heat, it can actually aid in spooling turbos faster since you're losing less heat. This could impact your tune, but not always.
    Great video Eric!

Aircraft safety wire is better to lock down those wrap ends and any loose areas of the wrap. Those crappy bands break over time after a multiple heat cycles. If you use safety wire, be sure to get the special tool that allows you to twist and cut the wire. looks really sharp and very pro.

Stainless Steel Hose Clamps Also work very well on wrap. I personally prefer the pre-soak wrap as it tightens up as it drys and doesn't tend to slip around with the heating and cooling cycles. Great video Eric, this will really help those who have never done wrap before.

I have found better performance and useful life of the headers by spraying them with VHT coating let it dry before installing the wrap, Then perform a second coat. Allow the second coat to tack, this will help retain the wrap to the header. If one is so inclined they can spray the exterior of the wrap too with the VHT.

When I wrapped my headers I did it with them off the motor , much easier that way. Plus I used some thin tie wire twisted together for tension (el cheapo solution) to hold the wrap tight as I went along. Then used the stainless clamps up near the exhaust ports on the head. I also kept the wrap away from the header bolts slightly so that I could still get the bolts back in once the headers went back in the car. Be ready for some smoke when you start it up the first time. Because the header gets hotter and it will burn off the paint that's on the header.

    Hi: I loved this video!
Like millions: can we get a FLIR reading of heat exchange efficiency?
Like maybe a video detailing why you wrap and it’s pros and cons? Maybe use aircraft safety wire and demonstrate that tool?
Wrapping is kind of a dark art as the few people who know a lot about it are race car and aircraft/jet engine mechanics. It’s like welding; everyone want to know about it but no one explains it.

Why is there only 1 turbo on a twin bank engine v6/v8..
i mean yeah it will give boost but be not so efficient and also cause tuning issues as 4 cylinders driving a turbo and 4 are not. different scavenging and back pressures for each bank lol..
2 x smaller turbos running from each bank be better than 1 x large turbo running from only 1 bank.
or if it must 1 large turbo running from all 8 cylinders somehow

A tip for people making big power (with actual high exhaust temps) or have aftermarket turbo setups, would be to wet the wrap before hand and make sure to pull it EXTREMELY tight after each loop. Its the difference between it unraveling after a few heat cycles vs it never unraveling after 100s of heat cycles...

    • @TheRoadhammer379
      @TheRoadhammer379 Рік тому +2

Header wrap is a good idea on any headers, doesn't have to be "big power" applications. I use it on my small power 545 stroker 460, the heat soaks into the starter and wreaks havoc on starting without a 30 minute cool down.

Hello Eric, this is just suggestion; from front to rear, tube 1) wrap from header to collector ( the metal clamps (they will loosen up and corrode and fall off) suck don't use them, use safety wire, make a double loop around tube and pig tail tight. tube 2) wrap from collector to top and safety wire with double loop tight. tube 3) from collector to top and safety wire. tube 4) start at top and work down and include lower part of tube 3 finishing at collector and again use safety wire. The small band clamps will loosen up in time plus they fray the wrap material. When starting cut the material at 45 degrees and add super glue to edge so no fraying happens. If you use .032 size wire stainless wire ( as used in aviation) it will stay tight and no corrosion. good luck hunting for a job well done. I visit your u-tube often. Thanks

Something like that. Perhaps you can do a video of proper hydraulic jack maintenance. My jack at times will start slowly coming down intermittently. Not sure why. I bought some hydraulic fluid once, but the jack appeared to be full still. Not sure what the issue is. It also creaks sometimes when it's lifting. Is that bad?

I found a trick you might try next time,
If you start at the flange and fold the first inch and a half underneath the header and begin rapping over the top of it you won't need clamps at the flange you will only need one final clamp at The Collector.
I did this on my land speed bike and never had an issue with it and the look is very clean because there's only one clamp showing at the collector.
    have a good day

I just did this for my first time ever I had the fiberglass wrap, but then I sent it back and got the titanium wrap instead because everyone was saying that you didn’t get the little fiberglass shards in your skin when using the titanium wrap. I found out that is false. My arms are covered and little Stabbys I also saw a video where the guy said you didn’t have to wear gloves if you work with titanium wrap, also false. This has been a nightmare. It’s taking me all day to do probably about a foot and a half worth of header coming off my four wheeler. The absolute hardest part is getting it started and holding it in place so you can tighten the rest of it. After that, it goes a little smoother but me being me I thought I would have no problem with it. I was wrong.

I've heard that these wraps will cause damage to the headers. Water will get trapped in between the headers and the wrap and rust will be intensified. In a few years you'll need new headers. Think that's true? I just built a custom heat shield to put on my header. Because with my dual core radiator the ac fan is right on my header.

Quick question, I have an air intake for my suv, and it gets hot as hell under the hood, would those help if I wrapped the air intake tube with it, or would it be a waste of time/ money?

If you want to cut to l wrap to length.
The math is Pi is roughly 3.142 multiplied by the radius squared, times the length of the pipe.
Trust me it’s not as painful as it looks.
So, if you’re wrapping a 2 inch OUTSIDE DIAMETER pipe you will divide that number in half and your radius will be 1”.
Write down 3.142 multiply by 1 inch radius = 3.142
Now multiply 3.142 by 3.142 you get or 9.872 inches. For each pass.
Now you measure the length of each pipe. Each pipe is 12 inches long.
So If you are using a 1 inch wide wrap, you have a 2 inch diameter by 12 inch long pipe, and you require a 1/4 inch overlap you will multiply the following.
    3.412 x 3.412 = 9.872 in
    9.872 x 12.25 = 120.93 in
10.07 ft add 10% for waste you have roughly 11 feet for each pipe
You will divide the total number by the width of the product for wider and multiply it for smaller product.
    You see, it’s easy.

    60$ per 100ft....jet coat spray $???
I dont know. This wrap is so popular doesnt look long lasting
...looks like a good temp bandaid
At best.....how many times will this need to be done with heat cycles and vibration....just thinking out loud......if they can come up with a spray can of this stuff......like spray. Truck bed liner meets, spray max 2k spray cans...some chemical guy would be a dollar richer....

    Hi
What is the outside temperature of the exhaust with the wrap?
I ask because I am building an inboard marine engine and maybe I want to use not water cooled headers if temperature stays enough lowt

Wondering if your headers are stainless or not. I've read elsewhere that wraps can hold moisture and lead to premature failure of the header by promoting rust. The wrapping looks good.

Very informative. I have an SVT header I wanna wrap before I put it on my first gen ford focus and this gives me at least an idea how to do it when the wrap kit and gaskets come in. It's a really funky looking header and will probably be a pain to wrap, but the plus side is only have one to do since it's only a 4 banger. Lol

Reason why I love HPC ceramic coatings.....the wraps can look cool though. I have used a high temp epoxy in the past to keep the fraying pieces down.

It looks, oh so easy, BUT, what about if you want to wrap your headers with the engine bay in your way...Good luck with that!! And, what says all that stuff won't just unravel with vibration from, you know, THE ENGINE???

  • @Mystickneon

Wrap the end in tape of some species to prevent that fraying.... Masking, electrical, duct.... whatever.
Just avoid the BS and use a regular hose clamp.... just put the screw where it's kinda out of sight, but still accessible.

dip or spray the frayed ends with some HI-TEMP paint to stop the fray from propagating! DEI even sells HI-TEMP siliconized paint you can use on the whole system.

I know this will make me look like a internet expert..BUT, I have wrapped the exhaust of every motorcycle I have owned (which is a lot). So, a few pointers... wrap towards to the collector, not away. wrap multiple headers together when they are closer than a 1/4 inch to one another. Loose wrap the amount of loops you need to make wrapping MUCH easier. I soak even Ti wrap to keep the dust/particles down.

Imagine trying that when the engine is already in the car!!! Not being facetious though, but is it really worth all that effort? How many degrees lower will your underbonnet temperatures be compared to non-wrapped? Kept waiting for Boris Karl off to put in an appearance. Thanks for making the videos.

I saw a suggestion from someone to Superglue the ends after you cut them, rather than tape. . Glad I watched this before doing it though! Now I know what a PITA those metal ties are. I'm just doing a part of exhaust pipe so I'll probably just try hose clamps.

little off topic but are you going with those breathers on dark matter pikachu or are you goin with a caych can system? i would think for a turbo car that breathers would just get soaked in oil after going on a drive. with the blowby from a turbo, but i can always be wrong lol
