With all of it shortcomings, We still have to applaud Ford for coming out with this pick up and Letting everyone make the decision whether it's for them or not. We know that the infrastructure and limitations of this vehicle are still being worked out, but I think that having it out there to begin with is a step in the right direction.

When this thing first came out, I loved it, but now that the hype has worn off, it’s genuinely hard for me to get excited about a $95,000+ truck - regardless of what powers it. Same thoughts on the TRX and Raptor R. If you’re not making $250k+ you have no business owning one of these, and that’s 97% of the US population.

Unless you're like me and had a couple of vehicles to trade in on it to get the price down. I realized when I ourchased the lightning I wouldn't be driving my 2024 F150 or my 2028 prius any more. So why not get the price down to something more affordable. Also if I had to charge at public chargers, I wouldn't have purchased it. That defeats the whole purpose of saving on fuel costs.

another great and fun to watch review. As an ex-Tesla owner (for off-road reasons) I once made a 6,100 mile (9,800 km) trip in mine. Rarely did I ever charge above 80% as the charge rate drops off a cliff after 80% and it takes way to long for that last 10%. You will get to where you want to go a lot faster charging to 80% then someone charging to 90%. Another consideration is the larger the battery pack, the longer it takes to charge.
I look forward to more of your reviews.

I've currently got a Ram with a V8 Hemi which was about $55K, and I commute to work about one hour each way. It's rough on gas, but I will take that all day over a $110K price tag, and the constant uncertainty of charging stations.

I would never buy one! They’re way too expensive and they’re already having problems with them. That skid plate design is just terrible. It’s awesome how you showed us that. I’m only 37, but all that nonsense with charging it would drive me crazy. I completely agree with your dad. And the charging stations have zero amenities... no bathrooms, no squeegee, no garbage cans, no food or drinks, and no protection from the weather. I’ll stick with my Duramax, thank you. I have about 650 miles of range, takes 5 minutes to fill up, and have all the conveniences that any gas station offers.

Until technology progresses these electric vehicles are just a toy novelty and an expensive one at that. In northern Ontario where large cities are 200 to 450 miles apart you need hybrids. I have a Sierra and a Rav 4 hybrid. We only drive the Sierra occasionally when towing. I think the hybrid which we've had a few since 2014 are the answer at this time.

The initial sticker price is the hard pass for me it’s just not viable when even the xlt trim gets so close to a hundred grand with extended range. Not to mention in Canada the extended range power plant should be named the only acceptable range since once temperatures drop the smaller plant won’t keep up.
None of the EV companies seem viable at the price premiums they’re demanding except maybe the Chevy bolt which I just don’t want anyway.

As a Canadian EV owner, I get the gripes with the public charging. It really needs to mature, and all the different apps are just dumb.
That being said, my car has enough range that I only have to use public charging every few months on road trips. The huge day to day perk is having a full "tank" every morning when I get up since I'm just charging at home overnight. As you said though, it depends on your use case.
The other shocking thing is the energy consumption on that lightning. My Ioniq 5, for comparison, does about 21kwh/100km in the winter, on studded Toyo's.
The price is also off the wall crazy.

We are in the "wild west" so to speak with EVs, much like other technology we are going to see some weird stuff as inventors and engineers try our different things to see what works best. Go back to when we started putting bullets in cases in the 1800s and we had all sorts of wacky firearm designs and case designs. Everything from revolver rifles to caseless lever action pistols. Obviously those designs had huge flaws in hindsight and where outpaced by superior designs like your standard bolt action rifle, but at the time they seemed revolutionary.
At first Front trunks where a HUGE push in EVs since the lack of an engine meant reclaiming cubic feet for other uses, as EV design has evolved most crossover and car type EVs have dropped the front trunk in favor of maximizing passenger space and eliminating long hoods and front overhangs as it turns out most owners did not use the extra storage space, and the rear hatch was often sufficient enough. Only large truck type EVs have kept the Front Trunk, as Trucks are entirely about cargo capacity and the trunk offers dry controlled storage for more delicate items like groceries you might not want rolling around in a cavernous bed.
This follows true with our charging infrastructure as well, we are going to see odd things in the future as engineers and businessmen figure out what people actually need. Does a traditional gas station style charger work best or is it better to lease space in a parking lot of a commonly traveled establishment? What do we do about people who street park cars? Do we install chargers along the street and assign spaces to households or do they have to travel to a charger like you do currently with a gas station? There is no yes or no nor right or wrong, only what doesn't work, what kind of works and what really works. And we are going to see more of the first two than the last one until people figure out what does really work and it becomes standardized.
Now is not the time for everyone to get an EV, and that is okay. Sometime in the near future however, I believe it will make more sense for most of us to own an EV than an ICE vehicle, even for our trucks unless we absolutely positively need the extreme energy density that gasoline provides. EVs have already made the majority of basic 4cyl transport mobiles look unnecessary, all they have to do now is scale up production to match in price and all your Nissan Rouges, Chevy Trax, Toyota Camrys and other uninspired basic transport units will just not make sense to own from a cost and maintenance hassle perspective. Things can change and make this not true however, EVs might never be able to scale production properly, charging times may never improve, and gas might become so cheap compared to electricity that making the switch just won't make sense from a financial perspective, but I don't think thats going to happen, history shows that technology always is expensive and inconvenient at first until one day it improves enough that it's not.

  • @alexandermckay8594
    @alexandermckay8594 Рік тому +10

I think this was a fair review. I'm not sure that the EV revolution makes a lot of sense in Canada. The infrastructure isn't there and it's taking a *long* time to see improvements. The range is a huge issue as well. We're big. Yeah, 300 km range. That could be a single days travel just around Toronto! Never mind going to the cottage or the like. As it stands right now, you can't get there from here is a huge issue and I don't see it changing soon. It's all about money. A charging network isn't cheap and the density of charging vehicles per month might not be enough to make it profitable.

You can buy a relaive cheap propane fuel cell generator and 40 lbs propane tank which DOES NOT USE pistons but rather a TOTALLY SILENT thin-membrane proton-exchange electrical power system which runs at 85%+ efficiency, so a simple 40 lbs propane tank is about 200 KW/hr which will gives you ANOTHER 700 km (460 miles) of range since the you can NOW download a "Software Hack" for the F150 Lightning which lets you charge it WHILE its driving! Sooooo.... you now get a total of 960+ km (620 miles) of driving range. That's good enough for most trips!
Cost-wise, 40 lbs of propane is $60 CDN ($45 USD) so pretty good in terms of running costs! The BEAUTY of a propane fuel cell is that it is TOTALLY QUIET and you can still use it for your BBQ if you connect a long external hose to it AND it also has extra power outlets for driving appliances and other gear!

Okay so lets take a look at the analytics. Average price on autotrader is around 98k plus hst. Lets say about 115K with all fees and charger for home. A f150 in Canada XLT/Lariat can be around 58-62k up to 80k depending on options. Lets say with HST about 75k. So right away we have a 40k difference. Average kilometres driven by a canadian is 15k but trucks are more lets say conservative 25-30k per year. Lets say a F150 gets 15L/100 km through an average year and that is 4500L of fuel. Now take a cost of around $1.55-1.7L and you are at $7-8K per year in fuel. So alone this lightning will take about 5-6 years of ownership just to be the same as a truck. That does not include charging. As you can see an average cost to charge a car at home/at work can be about 500-700 per year. So really on average your payback period on a F150 is around 5.75-6.5 years and that is right out of warranty. To me I would not touch this thing and I did not include the outliers of sitting in the car/ having lunch to wait on the charge. if you pay yourself 45-70 per hour that is time it costs to charge while on the road. In closing I drive about 35,000 km's a year with 17-18^% being towing a 4500 lb boat and trailer. I have done all my analytics through Power BI and would never buy an electric for 3 simple reasons. 1) You have a variable of charging overnight so if an area does not have good infrastructure north of barrie you are SOL 2) I do many day trips fishing and for me there is no charger at the lake and then I would have to stay in a hotel overnight just to have a full charge to drive home 3) The charging infrastructure is still in ideation in Ontario. I work for a utilities company and there is still about 4-5 years left to get charging stations north of barrie in a quality and safe rollout. We are still too far away for electric trucks to be used off grid, outside the city or on long road trips.

I completely agree about installing fast charging stands at already existing gas station convenience stores. Everything is already there and as the EV market grows the business owners there will be hedging against losing customers. Though not all stations could install pass-through charging stands (for EV trucks with trailers to be able to charge conveniently) for many it would be a smart choice. In fact, putting in a couple pass-through chargers and having several parking spot chargers would mean more people can charge but the options will still be there.
But, there needs to be uniform standards upon which everyone can rely. For one, all charging stands should be able to charge up to 350 kW at minimum standard (if the vehicle can't take all that power the charger will put out what the vehicle can tolerate). But, even better, all manufacturers should design their EVs to allow for extremely fast charging. The industry needs to work toward cutting the amount of time it takes to charge, instead of 1 hour the same charge should take maybe 15 minutes.

Ev's are good for people who have a single family home with a garage where a 240 volt charger can be permanently installed. Think of those people who live in apartment complexes or live in older traditional style rowhomes where parking is public and you aren't guaranteed a spot directly in front of your house. Even if you did get a spot in front of your house do you want the charging cord running 40 or 50 feet from the house down to the car and being left there outside all night hoping nobody messes with it. If your child has a sports tournament that is 2 hours away and you are staying the weekend in a hotel then you have to plan for when and where you are going to charge the vehicle over the weekend. Even if there are charging stations at a gas station nearby you know its gonna take 30 minutes or more to charge so you need to incorporate that extra time into your game schedule during the weekend. They definitely have a ways to go until EV's can make up even 20-30% of all the vehicles on the road. But the government wants mandates to be set on when all cars sold should be Electric. The whole transfer is poorly planned at this point in time.

It looks like this thing is awesome... As long as you are not going very far, nor very deep, nor in much of a hurry to get there. It pulls a trailer well, but it can't do it "all day", despite Howard's use of that expression. What I want to know is have adjusted the financing structure to make these crazy prices in any way bearable. Dodge used to finance up to 96 months (longer than the expected life of the car in some cases). Can you get a20 year mortgage on one of these?

My Lightning XLT SR is due to deliver Jan 30- Feb 5. I’m not sure if I’ll try driving it to Montreal since it’s the standard range. That’ll take get used to. Adding time to our usual trip time.

Problem in this vehicle class is you're competing with ICE vehicles that have extended range tanks that will take you over 1000km. 300km of range is when I go to the gas station. If I'm going to have two vehicles, one for in town and one for trips, the EV would be a small car for in town trips. But if they get the range up I'd consider one.

I have a homestead near Algonquin Park and hills and arctic temps forever. I wud like to see U do some climbs n descents on say a 15* (degree incline) with that lightening. My Big Horn with K02s can do the job in 8 inches of snow but can the lightening; which in my opinion is a non-starter here in frigid Kanadistan where it is now -25 degrees F. and it may have the power density but not energy density at these ambients with lugged tires and say 1500 # payload from Home Hardware. BTW: Ur ole man needs to get a real sno blower n not that back up toy blower that is obsolete n dangerous. If 2 shear pins break it is something more serious then heavy sno.

I can only imagine the pain one must feel when driving home from work, plugging in at 20% and then 5 mins later having to rush out for some emergency. Electric cars have a place, but it won't be in my driveway for another 2 decades. Trucks make even less sense, imagine trying to tow an RV to a provincial park and looking for a charger ... in your firepit?? Nearest tree?? And what about the trip there, do you disconnect your WDH/trailer all the time just to fit the station and plug in every other hour on a four to five hour trip? Heaven save us from the morons forcing all this legislation down our throat. Let them eat crickets.

There'd be no such pain for a lot of people. If you have an EV with 400KM range, and then give yourself a worst case scenario of 25% loss in the winter (It isn't typically that bad), you're left with 300km. Even if you were driving 100KM/day, you have a huge buffer when you get home.
We're a one-car family. It's an EV. I stress less about "fueling up" on a day to day or week to week basis then I did with my gas car. Every morning, it's got a full tank so to speak. There's never a last minute rush to get gas when I'm already running late because it came home empty the day before.

We traded our Powerboost in on a Lightning I used the powerboost to tow a racecar on a uhaul trailer to Nebraska from Texas and back(probably 6000lbs-ish(. The Powerboost got 11-12 mpg for the trip. It normally gets 20-24mpg when not towing. No surprise the Electric can't tow long distances without charging every 100-150 miles in good conditions. Definitely not a solution for long distance heavy towing in it's present form. Works for us, where our farm is about 35 miles away. Out and back towing a Gator on a trailer, it does fine. When battery energy densities go up, and Voltage of charge, to allow quicker charging, and there are more DC fast chargers on the highway, the differences will close, just like they did with wind and solar generation. Solid State batteries will likely start hitting vehicles in 2025 (BMW/Toyota).

Actually, one has gone 1 million miles on the same battery, but several new motors. The warranty is 150,000 miles, but many Model S Tesla have over 300,000 and some over 400,000 miles. Model Y, you can expect 22-25 years of use on the same battery if you drive 13,000-15,000 miles a year. It costs less than $300 year for Maintenace.
My Tesla only depreciated 9% after 1.5 yrs and 25,000 miles. My jeep depreciated 26% in 1 year and 21,000 miles.

Look at deprecation. 5 years in and you will have lost 30% range. With astronomical replacement costs. $28k for a new battery. What a deal!
