    I'm actually impressed with it crawling out of those holes, mud and over the rocks. No, it's not a hard course, but with those tires, I would have expected much more slipping. I wouldn't buy one of these for off-roading, but it would make a great truck for local work, deliveries, etc., then back home for a charge in the evening.

      It's not a ZR2 or a Raptor for sure but it'll get you to the camp site. A nice set of BFG KO2s and it would outperform any Subaru on the trail.

      @@mtang65 Ford gets their batteries from SK Innovations, which sources materials mainly from Glencore of Switzerland, which has a strict no child labor policy. Most of their cobalt does come from Congo, but also Canada and Australia.

    I'm here for the Lightning content. I think it might be my next truck (still several years down the road) so the more I learn about it, the better.

    I bet the Michelin tires that David uses on his trucks will be the best of both worlds. Aggressive enough to do stuff offroad while still being efficient.
    The 18s on the pro are the most ideal for me

    I lifted the front of my Lightning Pro. Just 2”. It looks so good. I went with 275 70 R18 tires to give it more clearance. I have not noticed much range loss at all.

    Finally a real Lightning review! I’m planning on lifting mine if possible, and slightly bigger tires. But no verbal sound effects! Rust, And def looking forward to the quiet driving off the pavement, windows down, just me and the birds and the B&O stereo …oh yeah! But needs rock guard, not steps, for even mild overlanding. Popcan body panels may not rust, but sure need protection!

      You will lose range when lifting it and more aggressive tires will also impact range if you care about that otherwise enjoy

    You could simply put a 2” space block above all four struts to lift a few inches. Maybe longer half shafts and control arms for more lift. I think mods on these electric cars and trucks will soon be like modding your R/C car some day. Motor upgrades, tires, even shell. Imagine, no fuel lines, exhaust or drive train. It’s like when the first cars resembled horse carriages until they adopted change.

    Ford needs to allow the Pro trim with extended range battery to be sold to consumers and not just as fleet vehicles. I'd be all over that.

    The lifts are easy for this. Take a look at the 3.5 inch lifts Traxda offers for independent suspension platforms. Plus, 3.5 lift on independent suspension gives immediate ground clearance and body lift, even before larger tires, whereas bof lifts lift the body clearances only until you put larger tires to raise the min clearance (the diff). Remember, your lift on solid axles does not change min clearance, only the tire size does.

      In retrospect, I should clarify.
      Basic indep. susp. lifts (i.e. spacer lifts on the strut mount with longer sway bar links) will be easy and available in short order (like the Traxda lifts mention in my original comment). Downside to those is the fact that they put strain on the axles/cv joints and pull the tires in due to the angle change on the control arms, reducing tire turn angle and therefore increasing turning radius and making tire rub more common esp with larger tires. However these are super cheap and easy to install in a garage with basic tools.
      That said, the more complex lifts for indep susp. with a full replacement of control arms with longer ones and longer axles to avoid these issues from spacer lifts, are already available for the the front suspension of pretty much every truck out there, so the same companies could be expected to produce ones for the rear suspension in fairly short order.
      Pros and cons aside, I think that one would be well served with a basic spacer lift of 1-1.5 inches on the Lightning (keeping the strain on the cv joints and other issues essentially minimal), coupled with a 2" larger than stock diameter tire. This would result in 2-2.5" of lift to the minimum ground clearance, which as discussed above is both body clearance and min clearance on a indep susp vehicle. To get the equivalent min clearance lift on a solid rear axle F150, you would need to have tires 4-5 inches larger in diameter to lift the diff clearance by the 2-2.5" and whatever size of suspension lift needed to gain clearance for tires that much larger than stock (plus the same large lift on the front ind suspension, with the downsides already mentioned above).

      Good comment. Mud terrains or at the least hybrid terrains will frequently be added, in addition to at least leveling kit style lifts. It all comes back to range range range with these EVs, in addition to refuel time and cost of battery replacement. There are very specific applications where they make a ton of sense, but these trucks are a LONG way from legitimately replacing a gas or diesel truck.

      I would suspect as big as they do gas trucks. My RAM Rebel has 33" Duratracs which are actually hybrid (MT & AT) and they sap a ton of mpg. Regular RAMs with street tires will get about 17-18 mpg real world, Rebels with their stock 33" get about 13 mpg real world.

      @@JohnnyLightningV10 I doubt that, people do it all the time with gas/diesel trucks, bigger wheels and tires that don't effect the warranty. Even Rivian offers their truck with street and off-road tire packages.

    Looks like the Rivian is going to be the off roading truck of choice with its ability to increase ground clearance from the factory. When the Cybertruck comes out it won’t be as small and nimble but no scratches or dents and an incredible approach angle is going to make it a beast. It will also be the lightest EV truck.

    Lifting it shouldn’t be an issue with the irs, most off road vehicles with exception of the wrangler/gladiator have ifs and they have lifts for just about everything. Great video TFL!!!

      These weigh pretty much the same as the steel bodied F150s. They weigh less then 3/4 ton Fords. The Hummer EV is closer to 10k pounds so that will probably go through tires quicker.

    I think if you're not towing it's a great option. Gotta get the tow range up (or I have to get rid of my trailer) before I'd consider it.

      Well with current gas prices towing a trailer any where past 300km cost 280$ + in gas i would rather spend the extra houre to charge the lightning for 8 to 10$ in canada DC fast chargers cost 21 cents a minute and they claim the lightning can charge from 15% to 80% 45 minutes 10 dollars to charge opens more possibilities for traveling but if you have deep pockets and spending 1000 $ to drag your travel trailer to spend another 300 for park fees for a week end getaway just to save 3 hours.. fly at it

    They could fix the throttle mapping with something like Crawl Control. For normal driving the accelerator pedal sets the torque applied to the wheels. For off roading you want to control the wheel speed because you might need to go from almost full torque to get over an obstacle to zero the moment you're on top of it.
    Or in other words what they need is a different mode for controlling the motors. I have a cordless drill with a brushless motor. If I pull the trigger lightly so it's spinning slowly, it's not using much power if it's just free spinning. But if I try to stall it, the electronics will immediately ramp up the torque to try to maintain the speed. It's hard to stall even at a low speed. Older drills without electronic controls work more like the Lightning. The only way to get full torque is to squeeze the trigger all the way, but then if it breaks loose it spins up to full speed.

    I am a f150 ecoboost owner and we tow a 8300lb RV. I'd love to try a a Lightning. We don't go very far most trips. But it might be 95 % of every thing I could use daily.

      For mild 2 inch lift, I can see that being easily doable. But for 4 to 6 inch, probably means replacing control arms and cv shafts with longer ones.

    That front air dam and those running boards have got to go!! Maybe make an option for a ACTUAL OFF ROAD VERSION. Include the bits from the Tremor, just on the Lightning. Better approach angle up front locking dip in the rear with available Torsen upfront, and for Ford sake, 18 inch wheels with some decent Rubber.

    I was so curious about the level of off road abilities. No doubt the power is there, but can the truck handle off road? Can it handle getting a little air? How much air. I know it's not a Raptor, but just how much can it take with that weight? I'm liking it so far. I'm glad it had the tires it might come with. I was really concerned with modulation and it sounds good enough.

    I’ve seen vids on towing and all but I’ve yet to see anything that covers how you charge while hooked up. Most charge stations I’ve seen are set up like normal parking spaces so if you don’t unhook, you’ll be sitting there with your trailer blocking the parking lot which will make a long distance road trip a real pain in the ass.

    I think an easy fix to the throttle mapping and lack of 2 speed transfer case is to have multiple throttle maps selectable inside of offroad mode, you could map like 0-10% throttle over the entire pedal rangle to simulate ultra low range, then maybe a 0-25% for low range, 0-50% for normal, 0-75% for medium speed, 0-100% for high speed. The torque of the electric motor should get you out of anything in 0-10% mode, because the electric motor has the most torque at the lowest rpm, so being able to fine control it at such a low throttle input would make low speed rock crawling far more enjoyable.

    Most pickup trucks are parked in people's driveways at their homes because they don't fit in typical garages. How will I charge the truck, what if it's raining? Truck's nice but no one talks about the charging issues/location's!!

    Its good for around town with light loads but pulling trailers not. I will stay with my 2021 hybrid Ford 150 with its good mileage of 24 city a 22-23 hiway as the front has been lifted and a large protection grill on the front. I do get this mileage. I dont want to sit at a charging station every 250 miles either. I

    Yep throttle mapping is key for any car but especially electric cars because they have no excuse not to get it right… Smooth predictable response from the accelerator and brake and in combination with regeneration to allow highly sensitive and gentle inputs

    I don’t foresee too much issue lifting these, at least not a problem with a few inches. Ram 1500 has had full independent suspension for several years now, they get lifted often without too high a cost. I guess with EV there might be some cables/connections that limit how far away the body/chassis can be from the wheels?

    Nice but with that big of a battery, it should be able to have a charge peak of 250 kW instead of 150 kW. Must have cheaped out on the power electronics? Hopefully they will increase it as they get experience.

    I actually just went to a class that discussed the issues with lifting modern vehicles including electric vehicles. Not only do electric vehicles have substantially more weight to deal with on the side of lifting it. You also have to worry about the sensors that these new vehicles have as well. It’s not going to be as simple as adding a block or a spacer call and is a day anymore. All the sensors are going to have to be recalibrated especially the ones that have autonomous driving. Which means not only will there probably be a disclaimer if there are lifts for these types of vehicles but it also becomes a huge liability for the company needless to say I’m interested to see what happens in the future.

    It seems to do well under Kansas controlled conditions,and it seems to have some definite built in advantages,of course the true tale of woe will be use in all kinds of weather/temps,towing in all various conditions,which now we know is not that great,and alas,,,what about snowplowing,everyone seems to be avoiding that little detail.

    Glad you explained the throttle because it appeared a bit touchy off-road. I just wish they offered it in a standard cab long bed. I really have no use for the rear seats.

      @@lesstevens2370 - Ford is producing Lightning right now , but dont have a Volume run rate, and are lacking customers , when Ford is still making outdated GAS models.
      Tesla would still be Profitable even of the Cybertruck does not get Produced.
      but they are Begining production in 2023.
      and Tesla has over 1.5+ million Reservations for Cybertruck , and Demand for 3 years just with Current orders.

    People need to know how far you go when towing and how long the battery pack will last before you need to replace it and how much to replace the battery pack.

      These first gen all electric trucks are not going to work for every situation - in the same way that not every gas powered truck will fill every need. As far as battery life and replacement cost goes, the batteries will last ~10 years and no one knows what the replacement cost will be 10 years from now. If I had to guess, in 10 years there will be significant improvements in batteries and replacements will likely add far greater range and capabilities (with less weight and cost).       Same as a gas ice truck you lose about 40-50% of the rated range when towing. People gotta keep that in mind.
      For comparison the base pro has less than 3 gallons of gas worth of total onboard energy, the er has about 4 gallons of gas in total energy.
      Which makes it damn impressive imo they can tow 120-160 miles on that small amount of energy. My f-150 gets 10-12mpg when towing. 😀
      Battery pack is covered for 8 year's or 100,000 miles minimum under the federal ev battery warranty requiredin the U.S.
      Other manufacturers have pack's over a decade in age and some with over 300k miles on them still in service today.
      There are companies working on battery additives which can directly be added to the electrolite mixture, helping to break up dendrites and restore the pack's to full or near full charge strength. Don't forget any ice loses some efficiency and range as it ages as well.
      Current pack costs vary widely from manufactuer to manufacturer. Who can say what anything will cost 8-10 year's from today?
      Something to keep in mind would be how ev battery costs have dropped by over 800% per kwh since 2010 now. 🤔

    Seen comment that adding bigger tires or suspension doesn’t effect warranty. On trucks in some cases that’s true only if approved by manufacturer. Try getting warranty work done after breaking axel or sucking in water in engine. Dealers will tell you it was misused sorrey not covered. That’s what I’m thinking about electric trucks they will say the motor wasn’t designed to turn that size tire or be put in such a strain all vehicles have limitations

    EVs have really revolutionized the automotive industry. I know for a fact that automotive engineers have looooong wanted to eliminate grills, move to all LED lighting, and all digital dashes. Thanks to EVs, that dream is a reality. No longer burdened by what has been. RIP ICE, grills, halogens, and analog gauges.

      Yes mud terrains will effect milage , but yoko Tires are great if you know how to use off roading features, Most Folks DO NOT, they get mud tires and still cant get out! Pro Off Roader Here

    Take a 3/4 ton diesel truck four-door long bed and Ford Dodge and Chevy and enter them into a mud bog and see how they do but put mud grip tires on them all the same brand name BF Goodrich mood terrain . Also run them on a dirt track that is challenging and aggressive.

    On Ford's website all of the lightning models have dual motors so I'm guessing that 4 wheel drive is standard across all trim levels.

    One thing I wish you touched on and maybe I missed it. How much battery was eaten up off road? We saw it with the Jeep 4xE where they claim 9 miles, and then you drove it off road and the battery was drained after about 2 miles. Curious what the lightening's battery efficiency is off road as well.

    For a electric truck the design for the frame is simple and rigid and looks a hell of alot better than gm rivian or any ev I've seen because of a frame you can drop the battery back and work on it easily plus its more protected from the sides

      Active suspension is not Standard and Requires an Upgrade.

    A bit harsh on the score. Wheels and tires are easily upgradable. Ride height will be a bit more challenging. The throttle mapping is just over the air updates with fine tunes.

    I wonder if lift brackets could be fabricated for separating the motor from the frame a bit paired with coil spring spacers might potentially allow for a 4” lift. Throw some AT/MT 305s or 315s, some off road bumpers, and some nice wheels on it, and it would look great. I know all this affects range, but keep in mind, truck drivers like me have been negatively impacting our fuel ranges for years with a trade off of not getting stuck. In the mall parking lot. 😆

    No one yet discusses the service life of the battery pack nor the replacement cost. If I paid $50k+ for a truck, I'd keep it for much longer than the OEM battery is going to last. Still enjoying my 2012 F-150 FX4 I bought new in 2012.

    that lightning is like wheeling the power wagon. it's so heavy it stays planted. that is a very interesting truck indeed. i could see having one for around town/around front range driving. but the long trips with my trailer, it's just not there yet.

    Kind of incredible that they had an opportunity to make visibility way better without cameras by taking the hood line down since there's no engine under the hood, but the appearance would have scared off F-150 buyers.

    Any issues with water wading? Maybe it will be like celphones with water ingress protection but only for a year and after that the seals and adhesives give in and water easily penetrates.

    Ford Engineering says its drivetrain components are NOT strong enough for lifting! I had one of our OWN engineers have a look at the frame that was shown at various autoshows and he says all we have to do is replace the motor and drive shaft casings and the wheel mount points with all-Titanium using a high-corrosion resistant, high tensile/shear strength Aerospace-grade of said Titanium.
    Once I take it apart, I can do a 3D scan and just thicken the drive tubes and motor casings and put on some Fox Shocks 3.1 Active Suspension mount points and we are done and the six inch lift is apple-pie easy! We just cut the wheel wells and add a 1/8th thick 16 inch wide strengthening strip in that area and our 37 inch Nitto EXO Grapplers can easily go in! The truck is already CAPABLE of being lifted in terms of available room BUT the tensile and shear strength of the current wheel and shock mount points are just not there!
    You need to replace the drive shaft, motor casings and wheel mount points PERIOD! 3rd parties already have designs on the books for the replacements with the added strengthened Fox or Bilstein shock mount points CAD/CAM/FEA'ed into the new designs. Many of those designs are using various 6061 or 8000 series aluminum but you can use stainless steel or like what we do: Aerospace-grade TITANIUM!
    All Ford has to do is use a different grade of metal or a thicker version of the current shaft, motor case and wheel mount designs. That's a measly four-week job for the CAD/CAM/FEA guys to do!

    My question would be how fast does the battery drain while you’re off roading. It would seem like it would drain relatively quickly and there’s no chargers when you’re offroading. Seems like this vehicle is for the city slicker not an actual truck enthusiast.

      EV’s apparently shine in stop and go style traffic compared to gas engines. Throw a portable generator in the bed and you’re fine.

      Are you sure about that? I would assume the opposite. EV's only use energy when they are working. In other words, if you stop on a rock and let go of the accelerator to think things through, you are using zero energy. On an ice vehicle, you are constantly idling and revving, using a lot of energy even when you are not actually moving. Not to say the lightning is great off roader, that's not what it was designed for, but if they created a raptor type EV and put the time in to really tune it for that, I think it would out do the ice raptor no problem.
