    Thanks - good refresher. One thing that makes things difficult is you can't lock your shutter speed but leave your ISO on auto. The other pieces of the picture not covered here are 8 vs 10 bit and the use of Vlog. I'll poke through your other videos to see if it's covered elsewhere.

    Really clear explanations, and you speak clearly and slowly, unlike some UA-camrs who speak at too many Words Per Second! Particularly useful re the shutter speed since I am more experienced with still photography than video. I will try the Filmic Pro app, but there have been many negative reviews about it recently, but it seems straightforward to get a refund if it crashes on my phone like others are saying it does on theirs.

    Thanks so much for your video series. I've learned so much. With the Filmic Pro update, there are new choices under the stabilization settings for Cinematic stabilization. I'm using iPhone 11 Pro. I know Filmic Pro always says to turn off the stabilization when using a gimbal. Why is that? My guess is the two systems -- iPhone and Filmic Pro stabilization -- would then be competing, and you'd drain your phone and gimbal battery faster. But I've tried this out, turning on Cinematic in stabilization while using my Osmo gimbal and it gives incredibly smooth shots. Do you think I can go ahead and use it? Perhaps just for short clips.

    • @SiHorrocks
      @SiHorrocks  2 роки тому

      I nearly always use iPhone stabilisation with a gimbal. If it looks good, then it's good.
      I think in the past there were more issues. And some phones have bad inbuilt stabilisation. But I think newer top range phones are work ok. If there's a problem, you might see it kind of sticking when you are panning

    I am new to this channel and Filmic Pro. Enjoying both. I am super happy with Filmic pro, but I found it hard to keep it on the right shutter speed when i was moving from shot to shot, changing lenses, Frame rate etc. It looks like in auto, it defaults to the double rule if it can, but if it can’t it adjusts the Shutter Speed away from the double rule to get the right exposure. Then the process of doing it manually is fiddly. A more detailed video in this area would be helpful. I think that I have just talked myself into buying an ND filter :-)

  • @harpenfluit
    @harpenfluit 2 роки тому

    What is the best shutter speed? It's good to realise that broadcast television is 25fps (US) or 30fps (Europe). It's not more cinematic to use 24fps. You will not see a difference, but it can cause problems since many devices are not able to output natively 24fps. The reason the cinematographic industry used lower fps, was to save money. Film stock is expensive and shooting at a lower fps saved a lot of money. So most shot at 18-24 fps. At a later time and because of the need of sound synchronization, 24fps became the norm. Therefore, I recommend setting the shutter speed at 25 or 30fps. Higher if you need slow-mo action or for specific needs.

    Hello Simon, love the video and content, I learned a lot from you, I recently acquired a Samsung galaxy note 10+,mostly for the camera, so far I'm loving the phone, still learning it. My last name is Horrocks as well and my father was born in Scotland then came to America while he was young. I'm very curious if we maybe related especially since Horrocks isn't that common of a name, at least here in the USA. Love to hear back from you and your thoughts on it. Take care.

      hi Jim! Good to hear from another Horrocks. I think it's not too uncommon a name in the UK. It comes from around the Manchester area, I believe. My Grandad worked for Rolls Royce in the city of Derby, other than that I don't know too much about the family history on the Horrocks side. I know of 3 other Simon Horrocks so I guess not too rare a name. One is in New Zealand...

    For a Samsung s21 what is your recommendation maximum iso before noise comes in?

    • @SiHorrocks
      @SiHorrocks  2 роки тому

      keep it as low as possible. I usually stick to 200 max, but that doesn't mean there won't be any noise. It just means it's probably low enough for me

    So, here a question. What smartphone in 2021 under $500/£500/€500 (apart from an iPhone or an old Pixel) has the most accurate front and selfie camera photo quality in terms of skin tones and dynamic range? I will wait. Cheers.

    I am having sound problems with my Samsung s20+ After recording video with an external mic on playback the audio is weak and breaks up. If I use pro mode the sound is ok but I lose the super stabilization. Any ideas please

    Physics of optical is fascinating, though most smartphones and now even professional digital cameras are using computational photography to simulate that essential physic. Why shorter lens have deep depth of field and why the widest the aperture the shallower the depth of field? There are optical physic answers to that. In smartphones, the aperture, which is fixed, and focal length are given in equivalent 35mm full frame equivalent. BUT, these are NOT equivalent for the actual depth of field. As the sensor is much smaller and the actual focal length much smaller too, the depth of field is much deeper than the equivalent full frame. This is why smartphone manufacturers introduce artificial bokeh (aka depth shallow depth of field) to simulate shallow depth of field, with mixed results.

    I did not quite get the Dynamic Tone Mapping segment. How do you set it on Filmic Pro?

    • @SiHorrocks
      @SiHorrocks  3 роки тому +1

      there's no way to set it but with Samsung devices, using manual control disables it. With an iPhone Filmic pro can't disable it, which means it will override your locked settings in certain situations
