I'm so glad to have found this today. I'm getting ready to make banner letters with a shadow and didn't know I'd need to know this. Thank you for the clear instructions. I'll give it a try.
Thank you very very much about this video . you have been a great help . with the ink scape . i will be watching more of your video's .. just got to remember how you did it in inkscape lol i followed along and everything worked out just great. once again thank you .
Thank You Troy!!! This works for me. But your end result is two cut layers. What if I only want to cut the shadow layer. What step would I change? I am filling the letters with pictures in Design Space after I upload the letters with the shadow layer. You are so organized!!! I appreciate these tutorials!
This video was so helpful, I hadn't figured out Inkscape before. But what if you need two colors in your text? For example, if you have two lines and want them to print different colors.
Hi Troy,, I was visiting your store site to get some vinyl and do the project that you just teach us on your video for my nephew's party but I was unsure which vinyl to buy because on your site you have the Oracal 631 and Oracal 651. In the video above you do not specify what kind/number of vinyl to use. I just want to make sure that I am getting the right vinyl material for the project and I want to make sure I am using the best for bottles. Thank you.
I'm habing trouble. After unioning and then doing the linked offset and selecting a new color, the new layer is created but i cannot get it to go larger than the original...they're both the same size. I'm not sure where i went wrong!
Hi Troy! Love your videos. shortly after 5:00 into this video, you explain how to fill the 'holes' in the a. I followed where your selected the node tool and drew the box around the hole. Then what?? Your holes disappeared, but mine are not. Thanks for all you do!
Thanks! I am having trouble doing an offset on text that is stacked. I am wanting the offset all the way around both lines of text for stickers. Any help you could provide would be GREAT! :)
Hey Troy! Love this video and I am super exicited to be able to do this but... when I try to import my simple SVG i get an error in DS that says "Unsupported SVG items will be dropped -- text elements --import anyway?" When I import it anyway all i get is the shadow. What did I miss or do wrong?
When you do the link offset then click the node and drag, is there a box you can put in an exact measurement of how "big" you want the shadow? Like if i was doing several words one at a time but wanted them to all match.
Hi Troy, If i wanted to shadow layer 2 words but with the shadow as one, how would i do that? e.g. i want to make stickers with 2 words like 'love you' how do i connect the shadow?
When I follow everything and get to the part where you click on red to drag it out mine doesn't work and snapping is off. I have 8 arrows around my word and all it does is change the size of my word no second layer
Is there a way to have each letter different colors and do a linked path to offest and have shadow letter or once you union they will be all the same color?
I am new to Inkscape and am following along with the video and doing my file at the same time. I'm having issues, may be my computer, but when I grab the node to change the size, it jumps around.
Hello, thanks for doing this, it is great!! One question. I tried to do this with font and it worked correctly. Then I put an image of a cactus in there and tried to do the same process with it. It did not work at all. Can I do this only with font? I would like to outline an image so I can lay the outline over the image when I cut them. Hope that makes sense. I want to be able to have the outline cover the image by barely overlapping it. thanks!!
When I open it in DS, there are the little dots that were around each letter saved in the shadow. How do I make sure this doesn't happen. They aren't showing when I save it in Inkscape, but when I open in DS, there they are
If you aren't good at eyeballing items so that they lay straight, what's the best method to use to make sure the imate/words lay straight with no bubbles?
+Maliya P Some people use dry erase markers to apply straight but you have to be careful not to get it under the vinyl. Here's how I apply without bubbles. ua-cam.com/video/ny9vs78aFEE/v-deo.html
At 4:18 when you grab the node and drag it out to create the shadow, both layers of my text move like it does for you at 4:40. I cannot get the back layer to separate. What am I missing? I did the link offset.
***** I went step by step threw your instructions at least a dozen times and linked offset never worked. In fact, I noticed that when watching you your linked offset option in the pull down had a shortcut (ctl+alt+j). Mine did not.
Is it normal when you upload the project from Inkscape to DS that the message" Unsupported SVG Items Will Be Dropped! -- Auto flow text. -- Import Anyway?" to come up? It does every time for me, and I really don't know what it means. TIA
On the shadow part you were getting rid of some holes but you don't say how you are getting rid of them? If I hit cut or delete it deletes the whole shadow. Thanks
Help please ! So the videos are terrific I just can't figure out when you have the shadow layer and you high light the center of the a to get rid of the space.... okay I highlight it then what ? please and thank you :)
this is super helpful thank you so much! I am not familiar with inkscape at all but ws able to figure out how to do this. I have a problem though, not sure if you can help, maybe you can direct me. I am on a Mac using inkscape, I get through all the steps and on the drag the node on the shadow layer to increase its size, it will drag for a second and then the shadow goes back to original, unless i make the shadow huge then it stays. it is quite frustrating. its acts like a glitch, as if i was letting go of the mouse constantly. any help to offer?
I followed all the steps & it seemed to work.....until i pulled it up in design space & now its one big black word?? Did i do something wrong in the save or download?? I figured it out.........I had to actually save as an inkscape svg file.
I cant figure out how to highlight the spots and remove them. I hit the node and i will put a little square around it but the square wont stay. im on a laptop
Hi Troy , I dont seem to be able to create the shadow layer after i select Path- Linked offset. It just create my current layer as a shadow layer. Can you tell me what I might be doing wrong ?
+Ranjeetha Wakeling Hi these are the few things i figured out as i tried this. One, be sure to change the color. I dragged the node and it made my image wider in the same color so i thought it was changing my original image when it really was making the shadow. If you click on your image after dragging the node there should be a red line showing the smaller orginal image, and i got interrupted from family so forgot the other one. i hope you get it to work as i just downloaded and tried it and am sooooo excited to work more with this program!
Yes but you have to make sure it can be layered, most things like glitter and metallic types of HTV cannot be layered so you'd have to cut it out so all the HTV is attached to the garment instead of layering.

the first half of the vid was useful for screen printing purposes. i had no idea how to create a shadow text. knowing is half the battle. thank you.
Thank God I found this video. It seriously saved my sanity!! Thank YOU!!
Thanks for the excellent video! This helped me immensely.
Thank you so much you make it easy to use for somebody just starting
Len (England)
Thanks Troy! This is so much easier than the other way. You are awesome.
Thank you Troy! Carl NY
Great video, Troy! I always get the best little tips from your "lessons"....thank you!
Thank you so much for the tutorials! You are an amazing teacher and person.
Great technique. Thanks for sharing. I hope Cricut add the shadow option soon.

Worked like a charm! Thank You
You are so helpful!! Thank you for sharing with us!!
What am I doing wrong? When I click and try to stretch the node, it takes the letter and stretches it, it doesn't add an outline.. :(

wait.... delete! Yay!
After finding out what on earth snapping was I turned it off. I still can't get the text to move as one and create a shadow. Any suggestions?
Lifesaver!!! Thank you so much!
Thanks for this video!

Hi! I am having the same problem! Wyou able to figure out what to fix?
When you do the link offset then click the node and drag, is there a box you can put in an exact measurement of how "big" you want the shadow? Like if i was doing several words one at a time but wanted them to all match.
This was great!! I hope I can do what you did :-)
Once you get the font with shadow in design space can you still edit it, like move the letters together to weld? Or is it best to do that in inkscape?
OMG! You are my hero!!

beth oconnell the image has to be a path. I'd recommend doing my Learning Inkscape playlist to learn the foundations.
thanks!
Interesting thank you.
Will this work the same for script fonts that you connect together?
Thank you so much!!!!!
What brand/kind of transfer tape are you using? It looks like it's really sticky. It takes me forever to get anything to stick to mine.
Cricut brand is SUPER sticky. I use contact paper from the dollar store

I have a mac and it's not letting me download inkscape. Do you have any suggestions or tips?
Great Job Thanks
I can get my shadow layer but when I go to upload it into Design Space; the black part of the text won't come with it. Am I doing something wrong?

this is where i got lost too. everything else seemed to work. Help please Troy!!
Thank you!!
Thanks for video Troy. For some reason my linked offset isn't working. Do you think there's a problem with my software?
No, I think you're missing a step somewhere.
***** I went step by step threw your instructions at least a dozen times and linked offset never worked. In fact, I noticed that when watching you your linked offset option in the pull down had a shortcut (ctl+alt+j). Mine did not.
Did you change the text to a path, ungroup and union it together so it's one object?
Troy...how do you get it so when you click the node it pulls the shadow and doesnt make the letter look all sharp and pointy??
@@mindykallsnick3545 I'm having same problem :-(

+Tina Eldridge You have something in the file that is not a path.

On the shadow part you were getting rid of some holes but you don't say how you are getting rid of them? If I hit cut or delete it deletes the whole shadow. Thanks
I was wondering about this also
he clicked on the node tab on the left side
Help please ! So the videos are terrific I just can't figure out when you have the shadow layer and you high light the center of the a to get rid of the space.... okay I highlight it then what ? please and thank you :)
After you highlight it, you delete it. I right click and hit "cut".

Turn off snapping
Thanks I actually just figured that out. All I can say is IT MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE
What if I want the word to be different colors for each letter of the word?
I followed all the steps & it seemed to work.....until i pulled it up in design space & now its one big black word?? Did i do something wrong in the save or download??
I figured it out.........I had to actually save as an inkscape svg file.
I have tried and tried to get this to work but I keep getting an error message when trying to upload it to design space. please help :(
when I click on the diamond to adjust the offset it keeps flashing and won't let me be very precise. can I fix this somehow?
Turn off snapping
I want to a use an athletic font with a shadow layer but want to turn it into a knock out layer so I can make glitter htv outline plain easy weed htv
is inkscape a program I have to find and pay for? where can I find that program?
+Lynnessa Johnson *only* download from inkscape.org
Troy, I have downloaded 64 bit from .org and get trojans every time. The 32 bit downloaded no problem. Will this work in a 64 bit system?
I cant figure out how to highlight the spots and remove them. I hit the node and i will put a little square around it but the square wont stay. im on a laptop
same here Kim...since it was a month ago, did you ever figure it out and would you mind sharing it with me? email is annettemiller154@gmail.com
highlight it with the square (like he did) and hit delete on the keyboard!
I tried this 3 times and I don't get the little red box at the upper left corner. :(
+Bonnie Merritt you probably aren't ungrouping and unioning the letters
bonnie, my little red box was in the middle not the corner, worked the same.
Hi Troy ,

What cricket model u have thank u
what does it mean when you go to size the node and it keeps flashing?
+Nikki Wright not sure, I've never seen this. Check your steps and make sure you didn't miss anything.
Can you shadow iron on?
Yes but you have to make sure it can be layered, most things like glitter and metallic types of HTV cannot be layered so you'd have to cut it out so all the HTV is attached to the garment instead of layering.
can you use scal 4 w cricut expression
No, it's my understanding that Expression machines with a certain firmware rev or lower can work with SCAL2, which is not made any longer.
Design Space isn't allowing me to upload my .svg. It tries to make me upload as a pattern. Please help.
This is an old video and they changed the software, you need to use the other image upload button.
Could you direct me to a video on attaching two layers
In Inkscape you do Path --> Combine
I can’t grab the red thing either
why can't I see this
not sure, must be an issue with your computer?
