    Happy Pride Month, don't forget to keep your celebrations accessible! I hope you enjoy learning some fun signs in ASL! This resource is designed to help you support the Deaf and hard-of-hearing LGBTQ+ community and, for allies and advocates, effectively communicate about LGBTQ+ issues using ASL. Like any living language, ASL is influenced by its users' diverse experiences, perspectives, and linguistic creativity. This content is relevant in 2023, but may not be when new signs emerge, reflecting the evolving understanding and terminology of the LGBTQIA+ community.
    Disclaimer: If you are with another member of the Deaf LGBTQIA + community, PLEASE always ask and respect their preferred signs. For example, with me I prefer lesbian and gay finger spelled, bc I’m not a fan of the existing signs… As with any language, using appropriate and inclusive language ensures that conversations are respectful and affirming to all individuals. As a deaf person, these are just the signs I personally use and were advised to use by community members. This is also for signers of any fluency, so they are the most straightforward variations. If you are Deaf/LGBTQ+ please feel free to leave a comment sharing how you sign some of these words!

    Hey! I used to watch your stuff on Tiktok, but I quit the app a while back, and now UA-cam is recommending you to me again right as I start my quarter about the linguistics of signed languages! I’ve only had one class but I’m so excited to learn more. Now I just have to pick a sign language outside of ASL to be researching this quarter…..

      @@laimaravillon895 Sure! I ended up researching Japanese Sign Language. They’ve got some interesting ways to do numerical incorporation (using a hand to describe a number and signing what it is they’re counting at the same time). It was interesting cause in ASL you can really only do 1-9, but in JSL you can also do multiples of 10! So like 20, 30, 40, 50 etc.

    Thanks for sharing this, Chrissy, very helpful guide!! Curious where you learned that sign for nonbinary? I usually just spell "enby", (or sign NOT and spell "binary"), so it's great to know of other signs out there. I myself am deaf transmasc, and will share this as much as I can :)
    Happy Pride! 🌈🌈🌈

    • @MakaiZurfer
      @MakaiZurfer 11 місяців тому +3

      Some people don’t preferred to use enby and nb, which it was originally associating to word connotation/slur. If you reclaimed to use it on yourself which is totally valid, but not using it as a community term and non-binary person. Not everyone are comfortable with those term./friendly

    • @ChrissyMarshall_
      @ChrissyMarshall_  11 місяців тому +7

      @@MakaiZurfer thank you for kindly educating! With this information in mind, at one point Mother Birdie on TikTok suggested this as a parallel to trans, my friends and I picked it up. Another non-binary creator shared that it is an umbrella term for a large amount of identities and depending on how you sign it, it can look like an upside down umbrella. I like this one and know a few ppl who use it, but always recommend asking what sign a deaf person you with prefers 💜

    Im very late but she should definetely check out the thai series moonlight chicken and the story of the two characters Li Ming and Heart.
    Heart is deaf, and through an accident Li Ming starts to work at Heart's house and they gradualy get closer, and as Li Ming realises he is the only one who treats Heart as a normal person, goes out with him, learned sign language for him etc. And the absolutely beautiful scene in the end where Heart is arguing with his parents is so touching, and he finnaly shares how he's feeling to parents.

    Do both meanings of the word Sex have the same sign? Sex as in biological expression and as in intercourse?

    • @caitlinb7669
      @caitlinb7669 11 місяців тому +1

      I’ve seen a different sign for sex (intercourse) which is like the sign ‘meet’ but with ✌️but I’m sure it could also be context dependent or regional!

    • @ChrissyMarshall_
      @ChrissyMarshall_  11 місяців тому +2

      There are plenty of signs for intercourse that aren't this, this is MOSTLY for biological expression. Personally, I don't use this sign for intercourse, I use it primarily for identity and in education settings. That said, I have seen others interchanged in other slang ways, ex: "sex" -y for "sexy.' It's a super easy fun word to spell, so when in doubt spell it out 💜
