The KG-UV9D Mate is basically the same exact radio, but with the orange and slightly fatter, slightly different case. They are also programmatically identical. I do take special orders the 9D Mate (mention HR 2.0 if you do), but don't regularly stock it because it's so similar and most SHTF preppers prefer the all-black radio (with a few exceptions). :)
It's not a full "matrix" style where a single channel can be a member of multiple groups. But Wouxun does support scan groups, which are just ranges of channels. I.e. group 1 can be channels 25 to 50, group 2 can be channels 200 to 300, etc. I think you can overlap groups (so group 3 could be 30 to 250, and overlap 1 and 2 in my examples), but I haven't tried it. The models I have support 10 scan groups, and you can assign an alphanumeric name to them.
Hi Wayne, Jody is correct. The UV9P has 10 scan groups (comes with all 10 programmed for the pre-programmed Ham and SHTF freqs), which you can customize as you see fit (easier with software). You can select which scan group is active on each receiver at any given time, and when you enter scan mode, it will scan that group, no matter what channel you're on at the time. So, for example, you can always jump into scanning GMRS or MMS (Marine) or the AM AIR Band (yes, this radio receives AM on the entire Rx range). You can actually scan a different scan group on each receiver at the same time - like having two radios in one. :)
The 9D(Plus) is the original version of this radio, with a standard 4-5 Watt output, and a slightly different case (although there are some versions with the same exact case), and they usually come standard with the slimmer 2000mAh battery pack. They are programmatically identical to the 9P.
Why would that radio have all the functions and can't be used why not just leave them out. Awesome can you do Park the park with that radio is it possible?
Thanks Jason...I'm looking to upgrade my TYT UV8000D to perhaps the Wouxun KG-UV9P for the big screen and multi Rx. But, I noticed your "Mate" version. From what I have seen, yeah. Check the battery type then go on Amazon and buy from a reputable brand. Cheap Chinese knockoffs could explode so buy quality.
Yes, I sell both the 2000mAh and 3200mAh. There's also a battery eliminator for running of auto cig lighter/accessory plug. I'm also working on a new alkaline battery case with Wouxun now, which for the longest time they said they couldn't do, but I think I finally convinced them, due to the popularity of the 9G GMRS version of this same radio. I'm also working on an external battery/power solution using the battery eliminator that will accept any 8-24VDC source, like a stack of 18650s or the output from your PV charger, etc. BTW, the D Mate, 9P, 9T and 9K are all the same, with exception of the 9K, which has 8.33 KHz tuning steps for the AUS market, and the slight color and case differences.

Yes I read that and it didn't sound like what you were looking for. "working band" - "limit range" - and "all 6 bands" doesn't indicate, to me, how to tell the radio to stop scanning on activity or to limit the stop and continue after a short period of time.
Yep I was reading that too and thought the same thing. But these are different menu options. “SCAN MODE” and “SCANNING MODE”. The one we are looking for is on page number 27 of the manual shown in the bottom right of the page showed as “SCAN MODE (SC-REV) MENU 20” and the other one talking about working bands etc. is listed on page 39 in the manual showed as “SCANNING MODE (SCN-MODE) MENU 50” With the physical manual you can obviously see the page numbers easier than on the pdf file but that’s where the differences are. Page 27 for 3 options of scanning stop. And page 39 describing the 3 modes of “where to scan” how to make the radio scan on the band the radio is currently monitoring (like 2 meter), make it scan on specific bands selected via programming (like 2m and 70cm), or make it scan all of the bands.
@HamRadio2 cool been out of the ht side of the hobby. Will be purchasing a 70dr. Soon. Have digital r.prs close. Down the road I'm thinking the wosoun. For Christmas
Hello. I bought one and just passed tech exam yesterday. I cannot find a way to choose bands. Save frequencies, program repeaters with offsets... do I need chirp and cable? There's no video for this device like other cheaper ones. This is my first radio. Great video
Absolutely! I've tested several of the 5/8-wave Smileys and also the tri-band Super Stick. They are quite amazing. I have them all in stock, just haven't had time to put them on the website yet (but can always do a custom order if you want one now).
The UV8H is cool, but it's has a direct-conversion receiver, not the superior superheterodyne receivers that the UV9P has. Unless you really need the IP66 (still not submersible though, so it's really not that different than IP55), the UV9P is a better radio with it's 7-band receive, including AM Air band receive, IMHO.
I've been considering carrying the UV2+, but until now, it only has 5kHz tuning steps, which is a deal-breaker for a SHTF radio. However, I was actually just talking with QuanSheng tonight and they are investigating whether or not they can swap out the CPU on this unit so it can do 2.5k steps. That would be cool because this is supposedly a superhet radio, and it does have a nice extended Rx range. It's not what I would call a tri-band though, unless you consider the FM Broadcast band as one of the bands (no Tx though). :)
Money, power consumption, SAR safety, etc. Also, I believe the higher-power amps are newer when a lot of these import radios cam on the market. Now days, many more of them are showing up with newer, high-power 6-10 Watt amps, although be very skeptical of the ones that claim 12-18W or more. Also, most power ratings are based on the initial output when using a brand new, fully topped off battery back. Your real-world power on this 8-10W UV9P might typically be in the 7-9W range.
CHIRP works, but it requires a simple work-around in order to read both radio settings and channel data - see the CHIRP forums. The red Wouxun cable works well, but the K4Y cable included in the RT Systems kit is the best. You can use just about any FTDI cable with the standard Kenwood K1 jacks, or other cheaper cables with the appropriate drivers.
Wouxun offers free factory software that works about the same as with the previous UV9D(Plus). I would highly recommend the RT Systems UV9D Advanced Software & USB Cable Kit though - it pays for itself in about 5 minutes. :)
@@bettersaferadio Thanks for all you are doing here. As a newbie (testing for Tech license Saturday), I have heard that a 1/2 wave antenna would be better than a 5/8 due to not having a good ground plane when hand-held. It was implied (or said directly, I do not recall) that a 5/8 wave needs the ground plane to reach it's full potential gain. Do you sell a Diamond brand 19" (or so, still learning) whip for this radio?
@@philabernathy1868 Thanks Phil! I don't profess to be an antenna expert, but I believe a loading coil can be used for an HT antenna, for example, with the Smiley Antennas that I sell, to achieve great performance and avoid having a physical ground plane (other than the radio and your hand/body, which are all part of the antenna system on an HT). However, I think this is why you can sometimes get better performance using a Tiger Tail, but the Smiley 5/8 wave does great, as does their 1/2 wave Super Stick. I don't sell Diamond brand antennas, but I'm thinking about it (in my spare time - haha). ;)
@@Norseman2 Well, the dual-band, yes, but it may not perform any better than the Smiley and its longer, but may be a bit more portable due to the flexible whip design. Many people swear by both brands.

@@mikebrostlove13 I didn't say these bands are useful or useless, that's simply how it's advertised on the box. Also keep in mind, not every ITU region uses the same frequency allotment, so a band that might be "useless" in the US might be a purpose elsewhere in the world.
@@mikebrostlove13 Your airlines are using DMR, for normal AM AIR band comms? I seriously doubt that. I still hear all kinds of AM Air band traffic and the band hasn't changed in many decades. My local PD/FD/City GOV is still on UHF analog, as I suspect is the case in many more rural areas. Heck, the LASD is still on analog. I wouldn't call most of the other bands fluff, especially if you're a prepper and want access to as much possible intel as you can. Also keep in mind that this radio has dual superhet receivers. I'm not sure what the ABREE has, but I know the UV5R does not.
In Wouxun-land (hehe), the BAND button on the radio switches between the two receivers, the main/active one being indicated on the display by the MAIN badge.
Remember, only BSR includes SHTF programming (if that's useful to you), and custom power tuning for the ham bands (otherwise they come from the factory tuned to nutty Chinese frequencies which are in the LMR band). I also test each radio to avoid any DOAs. :)

“SCAN MODE (SC-REV) MENU 20” and the other one talking about working bands etc. is listed on page 39 in the manual showed as
“SCANNING MODE (SCN-MODE) MENU 50”
With the physical manual you can obviously see the page numbers easier than on the pdf file but that’s where the differences are.
It’s stupid they both show as SCAN MODE under the “contents” table..
How good is the Spurious emission rejection. And are they f c c stamped
They are stamped, yes. I haven't tested for spurs
@HamRadio2 cool been out of the ht side of the hobby. Will be purchasing a 70dr. Soon. Have digital r.prs close. Down the road I'm thinking the wosoun. For Christmas
Hey, does this one support ”dual” PTTs? Like the ones for Baufeng UV82?
Yes there is a 2nd button for the PTT on the sub-band.
@@HamRadio2 but can it use a dual ptt on the K-Conector like the Baufeng UV82
@@JSwalas I didn't try. It has the same K-connector as a Baofeng, and it supports dual PTT, so I would guess so...but I don't know for sure.
@@HamRadio2 thx! then I have to try 😊 Its a bit of a gamble but I think it could be a good radio for me.
I would like to buy a radio for the hunt, need to reach 5 miles accross the mountains. Could you suggest me something well adapted to my use
Hello. I bought one and just passed tech exam yesterday. I cannot find a way to choose bands. Save frequencies, program repeaters with offsets... do I need chirp and cable? There's no video for this device like other cheaper ones. This is my first radio. Great video
Email me if you still need some tips Bennie.
AAR Channels are for railroads cool
Would a smily atenna work for this radio?
I don't see why not.
Absolutely! I've tested several of the 5/8-wave Smileys and also the tri-band Super Stick. They are quite amazing. I have them all in stock, just haven't had time to put them on the website yet (but can always do a custom order if you want one now).
Im american, and i speak English, and to me it looks like WO-SHUN...so thats how i pronounce it :D
Great vid. Did they update this radio in 2023?
Not yet
I have a KG-UV9T(plus)??? Whats the difference?
Nothing at all. :) Some models have a slightly different case, like the UV9D Mate.
I recorded a video about that question - ua-cam.com/video/0uazI60XEQE/v-deo.html
@@HamRadio2 perfect, thanks!
Having trouble manually programming this to hit a simple repeater. And I dont want to get out the computer every time I have to set a repeater.
Email me if you still need help. This radio is very easy to program from the keypad.
Looking at this radio or the UV8H. Have any preferences or recommendations on one over the other?
The UV8H is cool, but it's has a direct-conversion receiver, not the superior superheterodyne receivers that the UV9P has. Unless you really need the IP66 (still not submersible though, so it's really not that different than IP55), the UV9P is a better radio with it's 7-band receive, including AM Air band receive, IMHO.
@@bettersaferadio thank you for the reply and information!
Can I get a speaker mike an different aerials
Can i use this on GMRS
No
@@HamRadio2 wow almost bought this radio because i have gmrs license . So witch model i could buy for gmrs?
@@joegonzalez12jg The UV9G from the same website. The same discount coupon applies also for 7% off. I have this model and will be reviewing it soon
Can it be programmed for scanning police channels
Most likely, depending on what channels your police dept is using
Indeed, if they are non-trunking analog.
New Product : QuanSheng TG-UV2 PLUS Tri-band 10W Radio
I'll look that up. BSR carries that brand.
KC3QFI here, my question is, why are most HT's have a max output of 5 watts?
Money, power consumption, SAR safety, etc. Also, I believe the higher-power amps are newer when a lot of these import radios cam on the market. Now days, many more of them are showing up with newer, high-power 6-10 Watt amps, although be very skeptical of the ones that claim 12-18W or more. Also, most power ratings are based on the initial output when using a brand new, fully topped off battery back. Your real-world power on this 8-10W UV9P might typically be in the 7-9W range.
Is this a true Duplex radio for UV/vu For satellite work?
Yes
What cable do you use for programming and will chrip work
CHIRP works, but it requires a simple work-around in order to read both radio settings and channel data - see the CHIRP forums. The red Wouxun cable works well, but the K4Y cable included in the RT Systems kit is the best. You can use just about any FTDI cable with the standard Kenwood K1 jacks, or other cheaper cables with the appropriate drivers.
@@bettersaferadiowould my Baofeng programming cable work?
@@Norseman2 Most likely, yes.
Is the software used to program these models from Wouxun the same software?
Wouxun offers free factory software that works about the same as with the previous UV9D(Plus). I would highly recommend the RT Systems UV9D Advanced Software & USB Cable Kit though - it pays for itself in about 5 minutes. :)
Can this be used as a police scanner?
It depends on what frequencies your police dept uses, but it is possible, yes.
Is this radio superheterodyne?
WHO WOULD I TALK TO ON ONE OF THESE? I PLAN TO LEARN TO USE ONE.
If it's not running on 3-phase 4160 VAC, it's only QRP... 73 DE W3XWT...
Military Auxiliary Radio System (MARS)
What is the real watts for uhf Au ?
It’s typically about 8.35 to 9 W.
CAN IT SCAN AIR BAND
If one were to upgrade the stock antenna on this radio, what would be a good antenna choice..T.I.A.
Smiley 5/8 Wave duck or Tri-Band tele-whip.
I don't sell Diamond brand antennas, but I'm thinking about it (in my spare time - haha). ;)
@@bettersaferadioso like a tri-band signal stick would work?
@@Norseman2 Well, the dual-band, yes, but it may not perform any better than the Smiley and its longer, but may be a bit more portable due to the flexible whip design. Many people swear by both brands.
How can I mod this?
Mod it, how?
I think he means is there a way to mod it so there's transmitting capability outside of the authorized bands
I have this radio. Really like everything except hard to manually program. Easy to program with the RT programming. Maybe in the future you can do a how to manually program On your show? 73 KI5POB
It's really not hard at all to program this radio, and it's basically the same as any other Wouxun. IF you need any tips or are stuck on something, just give a shout!
Thanks I will call you
The claim of seven receive bands means:
76 - 108MHz ( Broadcast FM )
108 - 136MHz ( Civil Airband AM )
136 - 180MHz ( FM Voice )
230 - 250MHz ( FM Voice )
350 - 400MHz ( FM Voice )
400 - 512MHz ( FM Voice )
700 - 985MHz ( FM Voice )
Uhf 400 think 430 vhf 146 to 175 the rest is fluff bands where I live our airline use dmr and military air is p25 800 and public safety police fire all on p25 800 so pretty useless if you ask me check out radio reference before you buy not to mention pretty restrictions I have my abree for bug out bag and 2 uv5r mfg 2015 before all the restrictions in 18 lots of people doing sails pitch
"Band" might be things like WX, GMRS, CAP...
In Wouxun-land (hehe), the BAND button on the radio switches between the two receivers, the main/active one being indicated on the display by the MAIN badge.
just order this ht on buy two radio 149.00
Remember, only BSR includes SHTF programming (if that's useful to you), and custom power tuning for the ham bands (otherwise they come from the factory tuned to nutty Chinese frequencies which are in the LMR band). I also test each radio to avoid any DOAs. :)
A 200 dollars radio with a lousy screen that is nearly impossible to see in sunlight, and of course, only about two reviews that I have seen talk about it. The rest don’t. Makes me question their knowledge and testing practices.
lol it’s pronounced woo-sheen
It’s whoa-shun
