For off-roading with large groups of people, mostly with no interest in getting a ham license, we went with GMRS because of the FRS compatibility and simplicity.

@@HamRadio2 It’s March 2021 and the GMRS MURS radios are so hot you can’t find them. Their sales are sky rocketing. Now Garmin has entered the race. They’ve always sold the GMRS Rino, but now they’ve entered the MURS market with a GPS map device combined with a MURS two way radio. The device is aimed squarely at the ATV/Jeep off roading market. The radio comes with a external antenna for mounting on the roof of the vehicle. Garmin calls it the Tread Powersport Navigator. Garmin has a solution for those rugged radio fans and of course those who use hunting leases.

As a ham, I've never had a single use for the VHF or UHF ham frequencies. If I'm doing handheld comms, being able to hand a radio to anyone in my group is priority #1. Even if you unlock a ham radio for FRS/GMRS, the UIs are so clunky and confusing that I wouldn't want to hand it so someone for fear that we might have to change channels while apart, and I'm not there to screw around with the menu settings. GMRS is the only thing that makes sense given that priority. My Yaesus have been collecting dust for years.

@@HamRadio2 I'm still trying to understand why it is so important to have a license! It's communications! I'm glad there is no license required for a cell phone lol; the only reason I would want any of those radios is for safety. if I go out where there is no cell service, I would want a way to call for help if I break down or get bit by a snake etc.! I keep thinking on it and I still can't think of anything that would make a license necessary.
Oklahoma has been trying to do away with licensing for electrical, and I actually understand why you should need a license to work with electricity, especially for the public! having a license to do electric work I understand. Having a permit to carry a gun I understand. Having to be 21 to buy alcohol I understand. Having to have a license to use a mobile or handheld radio I don't understand!
They should be doing away with licensing for using any kind of radio and restrict bands used by the military. Having communications for safety in groups off grid, that can reach long distances, should be a right, not something you have to have a license for, and the courses they have for HAM radio should be encouraged and not required with a couple of exceptions for large antennas one might set up at their home and could interfere with with T.V.s and regular radio reception, but mobile and handheld radios should be a right, not a privilege!
Actually, I guess you can use any of them for an emergency situation involving life or personal property, but not sure why they don't lift some of the restrictions for people to use them in certain circumstances of group activities without a license. It's like they are trying to lay claim to something that doesn't belong to anyone. It's like a group of people talking on a certain channel and someone comes along with another group and wants to talk on the some channel; no one owns it but common curtesy prevails, so who is the person that decided that they were going to take control of it and tell people that you have to get a license to use these bands on these frequencies? It's not gun control! I don't get it! You can listen all you want, but you can't talk, and if there is an emergency, you can broadcast on these, otherwise, restricted airwaves.
Using them for communications for safety off grid is great. That's the only reason I would want to use them. The rest of it sounds like a big pile of horse manure!

I am a General and a GMRS operator/repeater owner. My primary interest in two-way radio is for emergency communications. Having a good radio service that all of my non-ham family can use is a big benefit. I can be the human link between Ham and GMRS. I am encouraging my circle of family and friends to get their ham license as well as GMRS license, but many people are scared of the test.

Great job explaining the differences, I'm a 27MHz (CB Radio) operator from the late 70's in Australia, getting back into the radio world. I think its also worth mentioning that GMRS has 8 Repeater Channels along with the 22 channels (you mentioned at the end of your video). I'm sure you'll add this and the differences into the next more detailed GMRS video. Its also worth mentioning that most lower-end GMRS Radios, especially those with fixed antennas, do not support transmitting on Repeaters.

If all you need is to talk with a group of known people traveling together (with varied skills (and passions) on comms) - GMRS sounds like a winner! However, if that same group of adventures get lost or stuck - HAM sounds like the best way to reach people outside your small group. Perhaps the ideal setup for a group might be to use GMRS, with one person having both HAM and GMRS capability... Your thoughts?

GMRS radios rely on line of sight and handhelds will not reach more than a few miles at most. Higher powered mobiles in cars with decent antennas will reach farther. To reach full potential, "base stations", mostly that ends up being full powered mobiles set up inside, with towers and antennas must be set up. This setup can reach 10-20, even 30-40 miles and sometimes much more, all dependent on terrain. The optimal setup is a repeater, positioned someplace extremely high, enabling signals to be repeated over a wide area. With two home base stations and a repeater that is positioned well, the range doubles or triples. Hope this helps. Dave, WRDV421, KB9OKX

Your immediate family can use your license, not every aunt / uncle / cousin within a 200 mile radius. But the cost is going to go down to 35 too, so theres no reason for the others in your group to not get a license.

This channel is golden Jason! Insightful and always filled with great information. I still have a lot of catching up to do, both in watching your videos and filling in a lot of HAM data that I lack, even with my license. I'll be tuning in when I can, both online and on air. Interesting that this topic came up as I actually do a lot of listening to 462.55, it seems to be a busy channel. As much as I would have liked to focus more in depth than I have since my recent test, I've had to direct a lot of focus on computer and phone issues. Ironically, during my HAM exam, my computer screen started to flicker, never did it before, it was actually a bit embarrassing, within a couple days it was dead; glad I got that test over with when I did! My phone is old and slowly dying so I need a new one. Together they've forced me to spread my attention out to many areas, but I can tackle them all and be in a better position than ever soon. Nice to be able to show up to your channel and get some good data. I'll look into a GMRS license once the fee drops in half, it'll seem like it's on sale! Ha! Have a good night!

I’m a licensed GMRS operator. I have a little GMRS version of the Baofeng U5R with a 5 watt output. And before somebody flies off the handle about it being only a Ham Radio and is not legal to be used upon the GMRS channels and frequencies, here is a fact, My UV5R radio is the newest updated Baofeng U5R GMRS version of the Baofeng U5R complete with the factory installed red colored GMRS sticker (not the Blue Ham Radio sticker), inside the battery compartment of which “Randy” at “NotaRubicon” has posted a video about and is not the Ham Radio version of which has the factory Blue colored sticker. I also have it programmed with nothing but the GMRS Channels and frequencies as well as the GMRS Repeater Channel Frequencies. But because I live in an outlying rural area I can’t seem to hear anything upon those channels or even on the GMRS repeater frequencies so it has become nothing more than a useless brick to me as a GMRS radio. Heck, in my rural area I can’t even get any of the NOAA channels on it except for a tiny bit of garbled unintelligible sounds on only one of those NOAA frequencies. But however, to be able to just make use of it as just a listening device and offset the forty dollar cost of it, I have programmed our local State Highway Patrol frequency into it on the lower “B” section. But again before somebody flies of the handle, and because I know that it is totally illegal to talk on the Highway Patrol frequency or any other emergency service frequency, I keep the keys locked out, and keep the radio only on the upper “A” section containing the GMRS channels and only unlock the keys with it in the “A” section if I ever had a need or a desire to talk on the GMRS channels and frequencies or their GMRS repeater frequencies. I don’t even flip it over to the lower “B” section. I just listen to it on the “B” section. ut aain. Jason Thanks for another great video. As usual, I really enjoy all your Ham Radio 2.0 videos, they are all very informative and a joy to view.

Gmrs is a great place to get started.. equipment is less expensive.. the license is less expensive and easy to get.. along with the fact that it covers your whole family.. so if you were getting radios to talk to members of the family but a lot more range than FRS..GMRS is a great option..

  • @markward7088

The main reason why some people choose GMRS over Ham is because most of the people they will want to communicate with (including family) have no interest in studying for a Ham licence.
One $35 GMRS licence covers multiple people without the need for each individual to study for the test. And you can use repeaters to greatly extend your range beyond FRS.
GMRS gives you the most overall bang for your buck. Obviously you will receive more information from Ham, but you can do that without a Ham licence

Range depends on line of sight from you to the other station you want to talk to. You can use a 5w handheld to talk to satellites and the ISS, which is 227 miles above the earth, but this is only possible when the ISS is overhead and you have clear line of sight. Talking ground station to ground station, you have many more obstacles in your path, so it is impossible to say the exact range of a radio without knowing what is between you and the other station. It would be anywhere from several feet to several miles.

Traditionally the cost of a 10-year Ham Radio license has been free. But the FCC, our gov't agency in charge of those licenses, is changing that to a $35 fee for the 10-year license. They've not yet announced a date when those changes will take place.

I have looked this up and these are the modes you can use on GMRS. right from title 47 part 95 rules. A3E is AM telephone F3E is FM telephone G3E is PM telephone. and there are many more. just wanted to put out that you are not stuck with FM by law on GMRS. Now the first part shows that FM or PM must be included in a transmitter but others are allowed. Here they follow copied right from the rules:
    § 95.1771 GMRS emission types.
Each GMRS transmitter type must be designed to satisfy the emission capability rules in this section. Operation of GMRS stations must also be in compliance with these rules.
    (a) Each GMRS transmitter type must have the capability to transmit F3E or G3E emissions.
    (b) Only emission types A1D, F1D, G1D, H1D, J1D, R1D, A3E, F3E, G3E, H3E, J3E, R3E, F2D, and G2D are authorized for use in the GMRS. Equipment for which certification is sought under this subpart may have capabilities to transmit other emission types intended for use in other services, provided that these emission types can be deactivated when the equipment is used in the GMRS.

Running a SxS in larger groups, ham licenses are impractical because not enough people are interested in putting in the work to get licensed. But, GMRS is quick and easy, no bands to learn, just which channel the group is on and go from there. But, we live and play in very mountainous country, with very few GMRS repeaters, and few useful for where we ride. There are, however, a good number of amateur repeaters around, so that may motivate me to renew my amateur license.

The RDM-DB is a dual band radio for licensed business band frequencies (part 90.) It will operate analog frequency modulation (FM) or digital mobile radio (DMR). It would be suitable if say for instance a group you are a member of has obtained a business band license. Jason, I have a pretty straight-forward question. You mentioned in this video, that it's not legal use a GMRS Radio on the 73cm Band. I understand why the reverse is not legal, but I'm confused as what would be the problem to operate a GMRS Radio on the 440 MHz Band, so long as the operator holds both a Ham & GMRS License. As hams, we can build our own transmitters/receivers, for the ham bands. What would be the problem with having a commercial radio on a ham band? I know hams that have done this for years, with no issue or problem.

I have both GMRS/HAM licenses, I use GMRS for family comes and have a repeater setup, outside of family there is one other user of the Repeater.
I like the Ham infrastructure, linked repeaters, but my family won't study hard enough to pass a Ham test, So they're limited to GMRS system.
We find GMRS great for Jeep groups, etc, Really hate the Line of Sight of GMRS, terrain makes it really tough to get more than 10 miles here, Need a taller tower, at 50' now, needs to be 75+ to get over the ridge to the south.
But wife, and sons love using GMRS.

This is a pretty good explanation for beginners. I'm going to get my feet wet with GMRS. I expect to move to the lowest ham license soon after. Any idea when the fees are going to drop?

They dropped in April, 2022. Get your FRN, then get your license. Easy as pie.

Im a ham operator and have recently gotten into gmrs. I like all the bands available in the ham world, but if i just want to use simplex walkies to my wife and daughter i been using gmrs radios almost exclusivly in that respect. They simply want to communicate, they have no interest in how radio works.

Update. 2021 summer both GMRS and HAM will be charging 35.00 for 10 years now. (still have to take the test on Ham radio)

OK, So GMRS is channelized. I am assuming that those radios are then preset and not tunable between the channels. But Ham equipment can certainly tune in between to listen. Hmmm, wonder what is in those voids. CIA? NSA?

@@HamRadio2 Somebody alluded to sending encrypted/coded messages on GMRS. I know that is prohibited for Ham, but is it legal to do on GMRS and/or FRS, MURS? If so, it might be an incentive to get the extra license. Also, how far can I expect a 50-watt GMRS to reach?
