Once upon a time, positive thinking and affirmative self-talk were considered ideas from best-selling self-help books. However, in the past 30 years, researchers have found measurable benefits for mental health and self-improvement. Positive self-talk, which grows out of self-respect, can modulate brain states and foster confidence. Conversely, negative self-talk can lower confidence.
Moving beyond our brains, positive thinking has been shown to have health benefits. It can increase lifespans, lower depression, improve immunity to sickness, and enhance heart health. It turns out that positive thinking not only helps us cope with tough times but also protects our bodies from damage caused by stress.
We’ve been discussing sacred self-care, and this week, Pastor Ray is bringing insight into how what we think and what we tell ourselves can either help or hurt us.
At the Village, we believe that learning to love ourselves is an important part of the greatest commandment. After all, if we’re supposed to love our neighbors as we love ourselves, we need to be really good at loving ourselves to ensure we’re not bad at loving our neighbors.
